  • laptop motherboard "shorts" when connected to adapter

    Disclaimer: I'm sort of a noob, and this is a long post. Thank you all in advance! summary: completely dead laptop with no signs of life whatsoever (suddenly, for no apparent reason) Here's the deal: Lenovo Y470 (only a few months old with no water or shock damage). It stopped working suddenly (no lights, no sound, even when connecting adapter with or without battery). I tried a different adapter (same electrical rating), but no luck. I disassembled the thing completely, and tried plugging in the adapter and looking for signs of life with all different combinations of components installed (tried all combinations of RAM, CPU, USB power cords, screen, etc plugged in). no luck. Then, I noticed (as I was plugging in the adapter to try for the millionth time) that there was a "spark" for an instant when I first connect the adapter to the power jack. The adapter's LED would then flash (indicating it isn't working or charging). So, I thought the power jack has a short of some sort (due to bad soldering or something). Scanned virtually every single component on the motherboard, and tested the power jack connections with a multimeter. No shorts or damage to anything on the entire motherboard. Now I'm thinking I need to replace the motherboard. But, my actual question: What does this "shorting" when connecting the adapter signify? (btw, the voltage across the power connections and current through it drop to virtually zero when the adapter is connected and "sparks", and they stay that way). The bewildering thing is that there are no damaged components, and the voltage across adapter terminals returns to normal after I disconnect it (so it's not damaged). Please take a look at the pictures (of the motherboard's power connection and nearby components) and see if I'm missing something completely obvious...   • Audio card with built-in ground isolator?

    What audio cards would you recommend that eliminate hum, and hard-drive & mouse movement signal interference? Hardware components: Motherboard. Asus P5Q SE Audio. Realtek ALC 1200, 8-Channel High-Definition Audio CODEC (on board) Harddrive. WD Caviar 320 GB Mouse. Logitech Marbleman USB Mixer. Mackie d.4 Pro Amplifier. Sonance Sonamp 260 All components are plugged into the same Monster Power HDP 910 powerbar (does not help eliminate noise). I have no other components plugged in. The computer uses a Monster iCable 1000 to go from mini (on board audio) to RCA (mixer). I have moved the cable as far from other cables as possible. A ground loop isolator between the mixer and on board audio eliminates all noise. I would rather not use a ground loop isolator; an internal audio card that is Linux-compatible (Kubuntu) would be ideal. Suggestions?

  • Tridion 2011 SP1 Core Service - expose to live server within PROD env

    We have a requirement to allow our users to submit information about their "projects" - a small piece of text and single image they upload. Ultimately we'll have a listing page of user contributed projects that others can comment on and rate. We've decided to user Tridion's UGC for rating & comments site-wide for this first phase which has got me thinking - UGC is tied to Tridion published pages & components, if we want UGC on our user-submitted projects, they'll have to be created within Tridion as components themselves, not be sat in some custom db table? Is this where the Core Service could come in? My understanding is that the CD Web Service is for retrieval, not for interacting with the Content Manager. Is it OK (!) architecturally to expose the Core Service only to our live application servers so our backend .NET code can create "project components" that can be then be published by editors allowing them to be commented on? Everything sounds pretty neat and tidy apart from the "exposing Core Service to live servers" bit. Without this though I'd have to write a custom way to "transfer" it back over to the Content Manager - maybe like Audience Manager Sync works? Anyone done this before?

  • Standards for documenting/designing infrastructure

    We have a moderately complex solution for which we need to construct a production environment. There are around a dozen components (and here I'm using a definition of "component" which means "can fail independently of other components" - e.g. an Apache server, a Weblogic web app, an ftp server, an ejabberd server, etc). There are a number of weblogic web apps - and one thing we need to decide is how many weblogic containers to run these web apps in. The system needs to be highly available, and communications in and out of the system are typically secured by SSL Our datacentre team will handle things like VLAN design, racking, server specification and build. So the kinds of decisions we still need to make are: How to map components to physical servers (and weblogic containers) Identify all communication paths, ensure all are either resilient or there's an "upstream" comms path that is resilient, and failover of that depends on all single-points of failure "downstream". Decide where to terminate SSL (on load balancers, or on Apache servers, for instance). My question isn't really about how to make the decisions, but whether there are any standards for documenting (especially in diagrams) the design questions and the design decisions. It seems odd, for instance, that Visio doesn't have a template for something like this - it has templates for more physical layout, and for more logical /software architecture diagrams. So right now I'm using a basic Visio diagram to represent each component, the commms between them with plans to augment this with hostnames, ports, whether each comms link is resilient etc, etc. This all feels like something that must been done many times before. Are there standards for documenting this?

  • At what point does the performance gap between GPU & CPU become so great that the CPU is holding back a system?

    I know that generally speaking for gaming performance the GPU is the primary factor which holds back performance, with everything else such as RAM/motherboard/PSU/CPU being secondary in importance to the graphics card. But at some point the other components ARE going to be significant in holding back the whole system! For instance nobody would be silly enough to play modern games with 512MB RAM and the very latest graphics cards (such as an HD7970) as I bet the performance increase over such a system with only 512MB but a mid range card would be non-existent! Thus it would be a "waste" for such a person to buy any high end graphics card without resolving first the system's other problems. The same point applies to other components, such as if it only had a Pentium II a current high end graphics card would be wasted on it! So my core question is how do you determine at what point for your system is spending on extra GPU power be completely "wasted"? (also, a slightly more nuanced question is trying work out at what point might the extra graphics power not be "wasted" but would be "sub optimal" value for money, when the expenditure should then be split around graphics card and other components. As obviously a gamer shouldn't always just spend on upgrading the graphics card! But needs to balance it out)

I want all requests destined to /components/ /css/ /img/ To check to see if their appropriate destinations exist on disk. However, I don't want requests to other directories to even run an IO operation, /foo/asdf /bar /baz/index.html None of those should result in the disk being touched. I have a stansa that does the proxy to node.js, location @proxy { internal; proxy_set_header Host $http_host; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header X-NginX-Proxy true; proxy_pass http://localhost:3030; proxy_redirect off; } I just would like to know how to arrange this. My problem would be easily solved if try_files took a single argument, but it always wants a file first. location /components/ { try_files $uri, @proxy } location /css/ { try_files $uri, @proxy } location /img/ { try_files $uri, @proxy } However, there is nothing that I can find that will give me, location / { try_files @proxy } How do I get the effect I want?

  • How to get a collection of UIComponents based on a stylename in Adobe Flex

    Does anyone know an Actionscript equivalent of the javascript getElementsByClassName. What I would like to do is add a custom 'stylename' to various components which I can then use to get a collection of these objects and therefore process their visibility property. The idea is I want to hide various components based on what roles a logged in user has - I just want to make this flexible by adding an array of rolenames to a custom property or use the stylename property on a Canvas or Panel etc. Thanks

They do not have to comply to any formal standard and should look alike the diagrams attached.     I'd like to write a service that periodically checks a POP3 account for new messages and based on custom business logic forwards the messages to an appropriate "To", and possibly changes the "From" as well. I might need to keep some messages on the server until certain conditions are ready for them to be forwarded. I have PDF components (Dynamic PDF, ABCpdf), but they don't know how to parse the MathML, of course. Is there a library that can help me translate the MathML to an image or something that I can feed to the PDF components on the fly in the web application?

  • TTCPServer limited to 10 connections?

    I've created a TCP server NT-Service in Delphi 6, I've tried Indy components, Ararat Synapse components, and am now trying just plain old TTcpServer to see which would perform best while using the least resources. I'm surprised to see that the live instance of the service (running on Windows Server) is still limited to 10 connections! Any new connections are forcibly disconnected. Have I missed something? Do I need to set a property or override a method of TCustomTcpServer?
