• How to install rgdal on Ubuntu 12.10?

  I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. Try typing gdal-config at a shell prompt and see if it runs. If not, use: --configure-args='--with-gdal-config=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config' with appropriate values for your installation. ERROR: configuration failed for package ‘rgdal’ * removing ‘/home/rdk/R/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-library/2.15/rgdal’ Warning in install.packages : installation of package ‘rgdal’ had non-zero exit status R-sig-Geo, this two SE questions and other websites pointed me to the requirements of libgdal1-dev. • Collision Detection for a 2D RPG

  First of all, I have done some research on this topic before asking, and I'm asking this question as a mean to get some opinions on this topic, so I don't make a decision only on my own, but taking into account other people's experience as well. I'm starting a 2D online RPG project. I am using SFML for graphics and input and I'm creating a basic game structure and all for the game, creating modules for each part of the game. Well, let me get to the point I just wanted to give you guys some context. I want to decide on how I'm going to work with collision detection. Well I'm kinda going to work on maps with a tile map divided in layers (as usual) and add an extra 2 layers - not exactly in the map - for objects. So I'll have collisions between objects and agents (players - npcs - monsters - spells etc) and agents and tiles. The seconds one can be easily solved the first one need a little bit of work. I considered both creating a basic collision test engine using polygons and a quadtree to diminish tests since I'm going to be working with big maps with lots of objects - creating both a physical and graphical world representation. And I also considered using a physics engine like Box2D for collision tests. I think the first approach would take more work on my part but the second one would have the overhead of using a whole physics engine for just collision detection and no physics. What do you guys think ?

• Time between AWS Notifying of Scale Down and Terminating instance

  Here is the scenario, there are multiple EC2 instances behind a load balancer. When traffic dies down, the SCALE_DOWN policy is triggered from a CloudWatch alarm. What I would like, is for the instance that is going to be terminated, or a separate server altogether, to be able to run a quick script that will execute a few commands to ensure all data has been transferred. My initial question was going to be how can I send a notification when an instance is going to be terminated by an auto scale, SCALE_DOWN policy. But then I saw this question Amazon EC2 notifying the instance when the autoscale service terminates it. If the notification is sent, how much time is there before the instance actually gets terminated? Are there any parameters to specify this time? Would it be a better idea to notify an instance that it is no longer needed, and get the instance to terminate itself once it has finished running the final script? Or, am I making this into a bigger problem than it actually is, and theres a far simpler solution?

  I've setup paypal on Configuration Sales Paypal a thousand times, but still not getting the Paypal option listed in the Payment methods on the Checkout process. And yes, I have filled out all the required info like the API credentials and such. Also, I'm not getting any errors from Magento at all. This is driving me crazy and it seems that no one (as far as I see) has gone throught this situation. Thanks in advance.

  TL;DR: sudo apt-get install ... saying "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." The problem I was trying to get the WebApps feature for PP and QQ following this blog post. I ran the sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webapps/preview command to add the repository, but i got a connection error. Since I know my current ISP gives a shaky connection, I tried again and sure enough, it worked. Then I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview, but I realized we had to update apt-get first, so I hit Ctrl + C to stop it. Then I ran sudo apt-get update which worked w/o a fuss, but when I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview again later, it showed an error message. Here's the dump: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: unity-webapps-preview : Depends: xul-ext-unity but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-websites-integration but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-webaccounts but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I think this might be because of me interrupting the earlier command. It hadn't got a chance to output anything, though — I stopped it pretty fast. What I tried I have tried running a number of commands:- sudo apt-get install --fix-broken sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get -f install sudoapt-get install ppa-purgeandsudo ppa-purge ppa:webapps/preview` Even after running sudo apt-get upgrade after every try, none of them worked. • What are the mandatory Linux kernel modules to run inside of ESXi

  I'm used to rolling my own kernels for servers, as it nicely minimizes the number of exploits (and the resulting patches) to take care of. In a traditional (bare metal) world, the whole process is about knowing what you have (hardware), and what you need (Ethernet, IPv4, iptables, etc.) In a virtualized environment, some things stay the same (still need Ethernet and IPv4), some things go away (power management), and then there are some new needs (vxnet3, or vmware-tools, even though that's compiled outside of the kernel). So my question mostly concerns itself with the last two categories: what can I remove completely, and what new stuff do I want? For example, what IO scheduler do I want, if all my disk operations are going through another filesystem/scheduler/cache to get to the virtual disk? Do I need hyper-threading enabled, or is the VM going to show them to me anyway as a CPU anyway? Do I need Large Receive Offload turned on, or is that something that the hypervisor's network drivers are going to do for me?

• Overwhelmed by complex C#/ASP.NET project in Visual Studio 2008

  I have been hired as a junior programmer to work on projects that extend existing functionality in a very large, complex solution. The code base consists of C#, ASP.NET, jQuery, javascript, html and xml. I have some knowledge of all these in addition to fair knowledge of object-oriented programming and its fundamental concepts of inheritance, abstraction, polymorphism and encapsulation. I can follow code up through its base classes, interfaces, abstract classes and understand a large part of the code that I read while doing this. However, this solution is so humongous and so many things get tied together whenever I navigate through the code that I feel absolutely overwhelmed. I often find myself unable to fully follow everything that is going on with objects being serialized, large amounts of C# and javascript operating on the same pages and methods being called from template files that consist mainly of markup. I love learning about code, but trying to deal with this really stresses me out. Additionally, I do know that a significant amount of unit testing has been done but I know nothing about unit testing or how to utilize it. Any advice anyone could offer me regarding dealing with a large code base while using Visual Studio 2008 would be greatly appreciated. Are there tools that I can use to help get a handle on what is going on? Perhaps there are things even in Visual Studio that I am not aware of. How can I follow the code to low level functionality in order to get a better grasp of what is going on at a high level?

• Erlang node acts like it connects, but doesn't [migrated]

  I'm trying to setup a distributed network of nodes across a few firewalls and it's not going so well. My application is structured like this: there is a central server that always running a node ([email protected]) and my co-worker's laptops connect to it on startup. This works if we're all in the office, but if someone is at home, they can connect to the masternode, but they fail to connect to the other nodes in the swarm. I.E., erlang fails to gossip correctly. To correct this, I've change epmd's port number and changed the inet_dist_listen ports to a known open port (1755 and 7070 respectively). However, something fishy is going on. I can run net_adm:world() and it reports that it connects to master node, but when I run nodes() I get an empty array. Same with net_adm:ping('[email protected]').   i recently tried installed java 7 on ubuntu 12.04 and i think i screwed something up I followed the instructions given here. First you need to remove openjdk for this run the following command from your terminal sudo apt-get purge openjdk* Now you can install Java7 by adding the following repository: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eugenesan/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer Now everytime i install a new program i get the following error: Download done. sha256sum mismatch jdk-7u3-linux-x64.tar.gz Oracle JDK 7 is NOT installed. dpkg: error processing oracle-java7-installer (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Setting up python-central (0.6.17ubuntu1) ... Setting up python-eggtrayicon (2.25.3-11) ... Setting up gmail-notify (1.6.1.1-1ubuntu1) ... Processing triggers for python-central ... • Screen blink twice every 10 seconds on ubuntu 12.04

  On 12.04 64-bit, about every 5 seconds my screen blinks twice. Even during installation of Ubuntu from CD, this happens during the complete process. I had no problems with earlier Ubuntu versions (earlier version was 10.04LTS 64-bit) System specs: I7-2600K MSI 7681 Motherboard 16 GB RAM 2 x Nvidia 560 card SLI (only 1 screen on 1 card active during install process) This flickering is driving me crazy, please help.

  (I'm not advertising nor promoting this game, as it's just an example of my experience and I would like to have your opinion about the matter if possible) I've been started researching "things" about games and I've decided to begin to play IMVU as a friend of mine said it's cool. At first it seemed just another 3d social game, not so cool.. But I've "tried to like" and after 1 day I can say I'm addicted to it! Yes; I will explain better: About the game: You can go in chat-rooms, move to positions. Some positions are like sitting in a sofa, floor, dancing alone or with a partner, kissing and more in this way. In the free version of the game there is no nudity. You can even listen to music, view youtube... The 3d graphics are quite low end, so it's not as real as the paid PC games of today. About my experience: At first I was going with my friend in chat-rooms, they seemed very nice. There were people talking about general stuff, quite like in a real life. Well, I begin to know some girls (yes, virtual girls commanded by a real girl, I hope!). Things happened: Some girls are just crazy, not like in real life, they make out in before even talking; Other girls you can speak a little bit, then they add you to their friend-list. Sometimes they invite to their virtual places. Some girls have really IMVU boyfriends only (but not in reality) and most of them don't even make up in the game, so it's really a level of commitment involved here! But from what my friend told they last for him, at least, about 3 days... Some others have real and IMVU boyfriends that are the same. Until now I haven't find a girl with different boyfriend in the IMVU and reality. Nor multiple boyfriends. There are rooms where the same people find each selves every day and speak about general stuff, relationships and so on... They are nice with you, they "feel" you and show careness. This is what amazes me, they treat you like a real human being and as being their friend in the real world. (of course it's not always like this) There are jealous girls too and competitiveness between females lol, I know you loled! This is kind of social. So today I closed my door in my room and I've played it all day long and guess what, I didn't feel a need to stay with a real person at all. Normally, If I would stay a full day alone I would get quite crazy... So the question is: It's just me that seemed to be able to fulfill my social needs or there is something more? thanks for your precious time for reading my full question,

• Running Android emulator inside a Virtualbox Vm

  I'm trying to setup a VM with a complete android development stack (SDK, Platforms, Eclipse etc) for a Hackathon. I'm having real trouble getting the emulator to start in the VM. I realize that the emulator is essentially a VM itself inside the Vbox VM and so is going to be slow, but it just hangs at the Android splash screen and never gets any further. Might there be something going on with the VM that is causing it to run so very slowly? Is there anything I can do to give the VM more CPU? I've tried setting the execution cap to 100% but it didn't help any. Anyone know what might be going on here, or have any ideas about how I might speed it up? Thanks Steve.

• BizTalk 2009 - How do I do t"HAT"?

  In my previous life working with BizTalk Server 2004, I came to view HAT (the Health and Activity Tracking tool) as one of my first ports of call in the case of problems with any of our BizTalk solutions.  When you move to BizTalk Server 2009 it is quickly apparent that HAT is no longer with us. HAT was useful in BizTalk 2004 mainly as it provided developers and administrators with a number of useful queries and views of what was going on inside BizTalk at runtime; when and what type of messages were received and sent, what messages had been suspended, what orchestration were running or suspended, you could even follow the process flow of a message or orchestration to see what was going on. With BizTalk Server 2009 much of the functionality of HAT can now be found in the BizTalk Administration console.  Select a BizTalk Group and you will be shown the Group Hub Overview page.  This provides a number of default queries that replicate some of those found in the old HAT. You can also use the Group Hub page to create new queries.  These can then be saved and loaded in other Group Hub instances - useful for creating queries in development for later use in Test, Psuedo-Live and Live environments. In the next few posts I am going to look at some of the common queries that we might miss from HAT and recreate them (or something close) using the new query option. Messages - last 100 received Messages - last 100 sent Messages - last 50 suspended Service instances - last 100 I have yet to try the updated Admin-HAT-Console in anger, and after using old-HAT for so long it may take some getting uesd to, but so far I would say that moving the HAT functionality into the BizTalk Administration console was probably the correct way to go.  Having one tool as the place to look for the combined functionality on offer certainly seems to be the sensible option.

• can't get a good install:11.10 server

  I screwed up my partitioning aparently tring to get lvm and raid1 going. the machine is an intel dual core dt with 2 gig of ram and 2 sata drives, one 250g and the other 500g. This a build for my school in n.e. Thailand. we have 20+ clients now, a website, email. Our old server is dying fast and we are going to add another 12 stations next week. I really need some help here! 1. have onboard gigabit ethernet that aparently uses same driver as realtek 811c. I installed a pcie gigabit card also 811c. At several points the eth0 has accessed the internet fine, but the eth1 will not communicate. 2. I saw a "fix" for this online which from root: rmmod r8169. this imediately killed the working onboard card. 3.I tried to re-install 11.10 figuring that would re-install r8169. However I messed something up in my partitioning and can't get a clean boot now. 6. so I think after 12 re-installs or so and 2 days. I can get through it right if I can start over with clean drives, but I can't figure out how to empty them out what with soft raid and lvm partitions. seems like i've had it going well and then trying to fix that one little problem, i go backwards.Please help! please send email.-thanks

• Java - Using Linear Coordinates to Check Against AI [closed]

  I'm working on some artificial intelligence, and I want my AI not to run into given coordinates as these are references of a wall/boundary. To begin with, every time my AI hits a wall, it makes a reference to that position (x,y). When it hits the same wall three times, it uses linear check points to 'imagine' there is a wall going through these coordinates. I want to now prevent my AI from going into that wall again. To detect if my coordinates make a straight line, i use: private boolean collinear(double x1, double y1, double x2, double y2, double x3, double y3) { return (y1 - y2) * (x1 - x3) == (y1 - y3) * (x1 - x2); } This returns true is the given points are linear to one another. So my problems are: How do I determine whether my robot is approaching the wall from its current trajectory? Instead of Java 'imagining' theres a line from 1, to 3. But to 'imagine' a line all the way through these linear coordinantes, until infinity (or close). I have a feeling this is going to require some confusing trigonometry?   This post is my daily summary of activities that I am going to take to reduce my overall weight by 15 lbs. I am not an overweight person as per my height of 5.11 I have decent weight of 178.4 and good body build. But from a long time(approx 3 month) I am thinking of getting 2-3 abs (note not 6 abs) and reducing my weight to below 170 ( which I was 2 years ago). This post will work as my daily diary of what I ate, what exercises I did, what apps/software I used to monitor my weight loss. Sometime it will not contain much information but some time when I will research will contain information for people who really want to reduce weight. My current target for next few week is to run 2.5 miles everyday under 30 minutes. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetable. No burger or tacos. No meat either fat or lean. And checking body weight after every four hour. Here are reading for today10:00 AM  - 178.22:00 PM    - 178.4I have already ran for 2 miles in 25 minutes, did a little bit of shoulder exercise and had eaten small bowl of vegetable biryani and two bread.I hope this post and all coming post will give the reader the first hand experience of a person who had read every blog and articles related to reducing weight and now trying to do it by implementing all of them by self. My approach will be a healthy way of reducing weight, I am not going to starve my self or going to eat only fruits all day. I will enjoy all the food item that I like to eat and will work hard on my body. This way I will / reduce the weight naturally and will increase the flexibility, durability and immunity of my system /body.

• Make the Windows 8 Mail app sync and notify Gmail labels

  My Windows 8 Mail app is connected with Gmail, and is set to sync emails and download emails on arrival. Most of my mail isn't going to the inbox, but is going straight to different labels. Say, all work related mail is going straight to the label Work. The problem is that when I have unread email in Work, the Mail app will not tell me. It will only display a label, Work, I can click on, not Work (1) indicating unread mails. When clicking the label, I will need to wait for some time for it to actually download and sync the mail before anything shows. Even if I tried force syncing just before. So: The Mail app is not syncing my labels, and will not give any visuals that a label contains unread mail. Is there any way to achieve this? Without it, the Mail app is unfortunately pretty useless to me.

I am not sure what/how/where to change my installation attempts which appear below. Please note that I am using ubuntu-12.04.1-server-i386. • 12.10 install overwrote my windows partition

  Recently decided to switch back to Ubuntu. I have a 3TB drive which was running win7. I had 3 partitions. c: for windows d: data e: data Have installed ubuntu before so 'thought' I knew what I was doing. I using netbootin I installed from a usb stick. I didn't choose the default options but I didn't choose the 'manual install' either. I can't remember what option I took but I figured at some stage it would tell me how it was going to partition the disk and at that stage I would see if it had recognised the NTFS partitions and I would be able to abort if it didn't. Unfortunately, it didn't and just went ahead and installed Ubuntu and made up it's own mind on how it was going to partition the disk. Usual story, the two NTFS data partitions weren't backed up. Is there anything I can do to retrieve the ntfs data? I'm currently trying out testdisk and I know I can use photodisk to retrieve certain file types but all the filenames will be lost and it's going to take a hell of a lot of time to rename them all. Any help or assistance would be more than gratefully accepted. Thanks in advance, Niall

I was really tired of trying without success, until I found this post: 45° Slopes in a Tile based 2D platformer, and I solved part of the problem with the bummzack answer. Now I'm dealing with 2 more problems: 1) Inverted slopes: The post says: If you're only dealing with 45 degree angles, then it gets even simpler: y1 = y + (x1 - x) If the slope is the other way round, it's: y1 = y + (v - (x1 - x)) My question is, what if I'm dealing with slopes with less than 45 degree angles? Does y1 = y + (v - (x1 - x)) work? 2) Going down the slope: I can't find a better way to handle the "going down through the slope" situation, considering that my player can accelerate its velocity. Edit: I was about to post a image but I guess I need to have more reputation he he he... What I'm trying to say with "going down" is like walking towards the opposite direction, assuming that if you are walking to the right, you are incrementing your Y position because you are climbing the slope, but if you are walking to the left, you are decrementing your Y position.

• My Kids and Ear Infection

  My Kids and Ear Infection is becoming a weekly issue.  That is why I wanted to start this blog to talk about my experience and more important hear from other parents opinions and experience. Well, I will start with my twins, they are about 3yrs old.  started to go to day care about three months ago.  since they started with the daycare, they started getting exposed to germs and viruses and the ear infection started too.  every few weeks they have ear infection.  They take turns or some times they both get ear infection at the same time.  To be more accurate, one of them is more suseptive to the ear infection.  We ended up going through the specialest that suggested an ear tube operation and also remove the adenoid tissue.  His opinion was that will stop the fluid from staying in his inner ear and will eleminate the ear infedction.  To make the long story short for now.  the ear infection never stoped.  in addtion to the ear infection, now the tube is stuck and stoped working, the tube is moved and going to fall, as the doctor said.  the problems do not stop.  they keep adding up.  and now my second son is going to need ear tube if he gets ear infection again.  what should I do?

• Is learning C# as a first language a mistake?

  I know there are similar questions on here, which I've read, but I recently read this post by Joel Spolsky: How can I teach a bright person, with no programming experience, how to program? And it got me thinking about my way of learning and whether it might actually be harmful in the long run. I've dabbled with various languages but C# is my first serious one, I've read "Head First C#" and created a few projects. But after reading the post above I've found it a bit disheartening that I may be going about it all wrong, obviously I respect Joel's opinion which is what has thrown me a bit. I've started reading "Code" as recommended in the reading list and I'm finding it pretty hard going, although enjoyable. I feel like it's taken the shine off of my "noobish hacking about" in Visual Studio. So now I'm unsure as to what path I should take? Should I take a step back and follow Joel's advice and start reading? I guess my main aim is just to become a good programmer, like everyone else, but I don't want to be going into bad practice by learning a .NET language when someone who's opinion I respect thinks that it is harmful. Thoughts?
