• The resulting .iso doesn't work - MultiCD

  Burning a separate CD for each distribution (Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc.) is cumbersome. I found MultiCD which promises me to have a single DVD which can hold several distributions. It is very great tool. Main Problem : The resulting .iso created from multicd doesn't work in a USB pen drive through I haven't tested it in a DVD. Running the .iso through pen drive (I mean booting from pen drive) doesn't work. I cannot even run it in live mode or can install it. Concern : I think if I burn the .iso to a DVD then might it will work. But considering it doesn't work in the pen drive, Will it work on the DVD? So how to fix it? If you know other method to make a multi CD/DVD then please tell me.

  I has a very simple task. I need to block access to removable media (CD, DVD, floppy, USB drives etc.) on a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server for users and allow it for admins. I tried to enable the following policy in GPO: User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Removable Storage Access All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access = Enabled But it did not work. I tried different physical and virtual 2008 servers with the same result. It works on Windows 7 but not on Windows 2008. Has anyone had success with this parameter on Windows 2008? Thank you

• Install Windows 7 x64 from a separate partition on same hard drive (no DVD/USB)?

  I'm currently running Windows XP 32-bit, and want to install Windows 7 64-bit. However, my DVD drive is broken, and the only USB sticks I have lying around are USB 1.1 only (SLOW!). So I tried (as suggested would work for a USB stick by several online guides): Created new primary partition (formatted NTFS) Set that partition as active Copied contents of Win7 x64 ISO Downloaded the 32-bit bootsect.exe Ran bootsect /nt60 F: However, when I boot into the new partition, I only see a blinking cursor on a blank screen; nothing happens. Any ideas?

All files contained in the checkpolicy, libselinux, policycoreutils, selinux-policy and selinux-policy-targeted rpms have also been copied into the ramdisk tree.   I'm currently looking into (U)EFI for the first time and am already really confused. I insert the Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise disc into the DVD-ROM and boot into the EFI shell. The shell will automatically list all detected devices, which are: blk0 :CDRom - Alias (null) Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F|2)/Ata(Primary,Master)/CDROM(Entry0) blk1 :BlockDevice - Alias (null) Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F|2)/Ata(Primary,Master) To my understanding, it should have already detected the filesystem on blk0 and should have mounted it as fs0. Why is that not happening? If I insert a USB drive, it gets mounted just fine. The board is an Intel S5520HC in case that makes a difference.

Windows Explorer Copy (default) TeraCopy Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier Unstoppable Copier stops copying as a whole, it keeps continuing the same file after 20 minutes, despite any settings. I have spent much time Googling, but the one program ("Unstoppable Copier") that people recommended, did not to the trick as it keeps choking on the same file despite a setting of "Fasteset Data Recovery", "Maximum Retries 0" and "Undamaged Files First". The back side of the DVD has some scratches. What options do I have? I have access to both Ubuntu and Windows 7.

• Too big a difference between Loud and Quiet when watching DVD's... constantly have to adjust volume.

  It is hard for me to find the right volume for my computer to watch my dvd's on because it seems like most reasonable volumes become overwhelming at the loudest parts of a movie and it is hard to even make out the dialog at the quietest parts. I find I'm constantly adjusting the volume during the course of a movie. Are there ways to make the difference between the louds and the quiets not so extreme? (both computer related solutions and non-computer related solutions welcome). Like moving my speakers across the room and increasing the volume? or the opposite? Or would would the extremes be less noticeable if I used headphones? Are there movie players that might have more complex sound adjustment features? If there is a software solution out there for linux that would be great too. Thanks, Dan

• How do I replace a harddrive that is in a two-way mirror storage space on Windows 8?

  I have a storage space in Windows 8 doing a two-way mirror on three harddrives. The sizes are 297GB, 189GB, and 70GB. I would like to replace the 70GB HD with a larger one. My thought was to remove that drive from the space via the Storage Space control panel, shutdown, replace HD with bigger drive, reboot, add new HD to the storage space. I can't find any options to remove a HD from a storage space in the control panel. Should I just shutdown and swap out the small drive or is there another process for safely replacing the old HD? (By the way, the old HD is still operational.)

I entered the MSDN "Disk 5000: Developer Tools" DVD, opened default.htm, clicked on the "Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010" link. The VSTFS2010 folder open. I click autorun.exe. And then I get "Microsoft Visual Studio Agents 2010 Setup". I don't get it. Why "agents"? I wanted to instal a server!

• Windows 8 Secureboot: How do you bootup from another device such as cd/dvd drive or usb flash etc.?

  On PC's and laptops running an older OS, this is just a simple matter of going into the BIOS and setting the boot sequence and putting the boot cd/dvd in the drive. In many cases you can even just hit one of the F* function keys to bring up the boot sequence menu on-the-fly during POST. The main problem I'm running into is that other devices besides the primary HD is disabled when SecureBoot is enabled. So far the only way I've gotten it to work is to disable SecureBoot and enable something called legacy mode. Needless to say this make it difficult to boot things like OS recovery tools, PartitionHD backups, Linux LiveCD's and a bunch of others. Is there another procedure for doing this since it seems to mess up the Windows 8 install? By mess up I mean that after re-enabling SecureBoot and starting Windows 8 normally, the OS goes into a 'preping repair phase' for some reason that takes forever to complete before getting into a usable desktop.

I know I can boot from a USB stick but I don't have one available, what are my options given the following hardware at hand? Netgear ReadyNAS Duo NAS (NIC or USB only, no Firewire) USB HDD (no Firewire) I've ripped an ISO of the installation disk, can I somehow get the Mini to boot from this image using one of the above? If I decide not to re-pave but just upgrade, can the Mac be upgraded just using an OSX 10.6 ISO image on its disk?

• My new hard drive won't automount on boot

  I installed a new hard drive right before installing the new Ubuntu 11.10 by reformatting, not upgrading. I was able to mount my drive, and partition it. It's a 1TB, and I was able to transfer all of my music, and videos to it. For some reason, it won't mount on boot, and I can't figure out how to manually mount it afterwards either.   Dell PowerEdge 1600SC Server won't boot from Fedora 12 DVD in the drive because it only supports CDs as I found out after the fact. I'm a complete novice @ servers, so if you need more detail, let me know, and I'll try to provide it. This server is around 4-6 years old. it has "PXE" boot, not sure what that means? This particular server has 3 RAID hard drives. As far as I know, they have all been wiped. I looked up the service tag on Dell, and it has: Compact Disk Drive, 650M, I Internal, Half Height, 48X, BlackHitachi LG Data Storage as its CD drive. Thus, the CD drive does not support DVDs, so installation will have to be via a live CD. However, I'm trying to put Amahi Home Server (http://www.amahi.org/), and Live CD/USB stick installs are not recommended unless one is an expert Linux user. any suggestions as to how to get around this?   I have just repaired a friends computer (replaced motherboard) and now I am trying to repair the Windows (Windows Vista) partitions. Unfortunately, probably due to the fact that he tried to start it several times after the old motherboard had stopped working (no signal on video) now the partition table or the file systems (or both?) appear to be damaged. I managed to boot Windows a couple of times but could not complete the boot. I tried to repair the partition table and file systems using Linux RIP (booting from USB stick) but the Linux utilities say that the file system is damaged and I should run chkdsk /f from Windows. So I now need a Windows boot CD from which I can boot and run chkdsk or any other Windows utilities that can repair the file system. Is there an easy way to create such a CD? Or can I download it for free somewhere? All the links to Windows Vista boot / repair CD's I have found on the internet refer to non-free stuff. Any hint? EDIT I have a working laptop with Windows Vista installed. So one solution would be to make a bootable CD or USB from it so that I can boot the desktop and run the repair utilities. However, I do not have the Windows Vista installation DVD, because both computers were bought with Windows pre-installed.

  Which Windows 8 tool should I use to "read", "upload", my Windows 7 latest backup DVD (is it possible?). I've just installed W8 and haven't made any changes to my new ecosystem and, what happened was that, as I was managing my new drivers, some mess* occurred, I confess, and now what I have left is every single backup tool I made use of W7, like system images, restore dvds, backup up to date monthly and so on, and would like to keep in touch with W8. I'm one of those with problems managing the amd switchable gpu drivers. Now I want to stay with W8 (download version - didn't clean install) but with my old personal files. I don't care to programs updates. I got everything original on dvds, of my interest. Yesterday I tried refreshing W8 once but didn't work. Maybe trying again tonight. What would you guys do in my place, please? *the mess I am talking about is to have disabled my intel (the only driver left) gpu in device manager tool in W8. I got black screen on system boot.   (Surprised I didn't already find an answer here to this!) I've got a computer on which I'd like to back up the iTunes library – music, movies, apps, everything. We're talking multiple gigabytes. Unfortunately, it seems that iTunes' own built-in "Back Up to Disc" feature (the only backup feature I can find in iTunes) only functions with a CD or DVD writer/burner. The computer in question does not have a DVD burner. While it has a CD burner, attempting to back up to CDs would require dozens of discs plus more time than I'm willing to spend swapping them. So: What is the recommended way to back up an entire iTunes library on a Windows computer, to a non-CD/DVD location such as an external hard drive or a network shared folder? Then, once such a backup has been performed, what is the process for restoring the library – e.g. after the computer has been repaved with a new version of Windows – so that iTunes is resurrected whole and recognizes devices it syncs with? • The RTL8111/8168B NIC under Linux and the r8168 driver

  So I've got one of the infamous R8168 Realtek ethernet NIC, which have some problems under Linux. After some research, I found out I had to use the r8168 driver for this card (and not the r8169 which still loads when nothing else is available), which I did. So now everything works fine... Sort of. My download and upload rates are more than halved compared to what I should get. When I test (with eg. speedtest) I get something like 20M (often 15M) in download and 30M in upload, but if I test under Windows (everything is otherwise identical: same ethernet cable, same connection, at the same time of the day (well 5 min apart)...), I get 50M upload/download (which is what I expect). • Possible to host CentOS netinstall files on a local HTTP/FTP?

  I'm running XenServer on an Dell R610 and am running into a catch-22. During install from DVD, CentOS can't find the DVD package catalogue. It's a reported error for some, XenServer + CentOS6 + DVD install in some hardware configurations = failed install. Yes, I checked the MD5 and let the disc test pass. In every reported case, the netinstall was the solution. The issue is my net access is required to go through a web proxy that prompts before you can download a file. This naturally breaks any download automation. I've been waiting on our IT to put in an exception rule to allow my lab to bypass the prompt, but it's been over 3 weeks now and they don't seem responsive. (I've been working on this a day or two a week) I want to try and host the netinstall files local in my Xen network. Right now I only have a bunch of Windows based VMs, CentOS won't install so I don't have any Linux tools. I had tried simply hosting all the DVD contents off one of the Windows servers using Mongoose. (I didn't want to setup IIS) I copied them to a hosted sub-directory similar to all the mirrors out there (e.g. http:///centos/6.2/os/i386/) with no auth or anything. Then in the netinstall I correctly pointed to it. I now realize just copying the DVD files over won't work. The repodata will point to a local device, not the site I'm hosting. (e.g. the DVD repodata includes xml that points to where the packages are) Clearly I'm hosting them over HTTP, not from a DVD. Is there an easy way to sort this out? I'm just trying to install CentOS6 on Xen. If there's a turnkey downloadable Xen image with CentOS 6.2 on it, or a downloadable repo image, I'll take that too! Thank you in advance!
