  • Internet connection sharing between Windows XP and Windows 7

    - by Dave
I bought my lil sister's netbooks for Christmas and I've been having a heck of a time trying to get Internet Connection Sharing to work. The host computer is a Windows XP box and it uses a US Cellular 3G modem dongle thingy to set it's Internet access. Additionally I have a hard wire plugged into the LAN1 port of the router described below. (I tried the WAN port out of desperation but things didn't seem happy that way.) Additionally they have a linksys router (can't remember specific model number, I will find this out) that I was using to take advantage of it's wireless capabilities. Originally thought about updating the router to use dd-wrt, but after reading the instructions it looked like to much of a pita (had to downgrade firmware, then install dd-wrt) to set up, eventually I caved, out of desperation, and ended up successfully installing dd-wrt on the router. I have DHCP turned off on the router, actually all I could select was DHCP forwarder. The netbooks both have windows 7 starter installed on them. Initially, I had the networks joined to a homegroup but I dropped that and everyone is able to see everyone in their respective network explorers. When I turn on Internet Connection Sharing on the host, its IP on the LAN changed to 192.168.0.1, so I arbitrarily decided to assign the router to port 192.168.0.100. When I connect the netbooks they get IPs dynamically. As I stated before, everyone can see everyone in the network explorer, and shares can be accessed. The weird thing is that everyone can ping the router but they cannot ping each others IPs. The status on the netbooks says that there is no Internet Connectivity. Another thing I tried was manually setting the DNS servers on the netbooks to the DNS servers that the host computer has. The funny thing is when I ping an outside domain such as google.com the IP address resolves, however I get no responses from the pings. When I tried plugging the host into the WAN port I could ping the router, nor could I access the router's web access admin. Another thing I tried was turning off the firewall on the netbooks and the firewall off on the host computer for the LAN connection, and they still could not ping each other. Also I thought I should be able to start a remote desktop connection but I couldn't do that either, I also checked to make sure that computers would in fact accept a request for remote desktop connections.

  • Could a HomePlug be used to connect 2 routers?

    - by tigermain
I have 2 routers that I would like to connect together (they are wireless but dont have an AP mode) could I simply buy a pair of homeplugs and connect them in order for all machines to have complete visibility of each other?! The DHCP will only be enabled on one, so the other will simply be acting as a switch

  • Router/Security question: Am I hacked?

    - by IVR Avenger
Hi, all. I've noticed that my home broadband speed seems to be a bit slow in recent days. I noticed, last night, that my Wireless Router had given a DHCP lease to a public IP address with an odd formation; something like 111.10.11.110. Should I consider these warning sings of my ZyXEL router being compromised in some way? Thanks, IVR Avenger

How can I change fedora 12 hostname using gui tools (network connections) only, without editing config files? All I can see right now if I select "Manual" in IPv4 settings is "DNS servers" or DHCP client ID, neither of which sounds like "domain/hostname" combination. Tips?

  • 6TO4 Windows 2003 DNS

    - by OptimAdam
This is puzzling me a bit. We are running server 2003 DNS/DHCP and normally we disable IPV6 on the client end. But I have just noticed with windows 7 and server 2008 R2 if I disable IPv6 then it registers an 6TO4 address in DNS not its Standard IP address. If I enable IPv6 it registers its ip. Can anyone explain why this is? Regards Adam

  • Changing IP on Domain Controller?

    - by Beuy
I'm considering changing the IP on a 2008 Domain Controller, anything that I should be aware of to look out for? Will be doing this on a Saturday night to, leases renew every 24 hours so by Monday morning all the machines will have valid DHCP leases with correct DNS servers. Have a list of all machines on static IP so I know to update them while I'm at it.

  • What resources are best for staying current about information security?

    - by dr.pooter
What types of sites do you visit, on a regular basis, to stay current on information security issues? Some examples from my list include: http://isc.sans.org/ http://www.kaspersky.com/viruswatch3 http://www.schneier.com/blog/ http://blog.fireeye.com/research/ As well as following the security heavyweights on twitter. I'm curious to hear what resources you recommend for daily monitoring. Anything specific to particular operating systems or other software. Are mailing lists still considered valuable. My goal would be to trim the cruft of all the things I'm currently subscribed to and focus on the essentials.

  • Can Linux report IP conflicts?

    - by James
If a Red Hat or other Linux host has a conflict with an IP address, is there a way to have it display a warning message on the console or in a log, like Windows and MacOS do? i.e. my computer has an IP address configured (or received from a DHCP server) but finds another device on the network using the assigned address. Will it log the conflict?

  • Vmware - How do i config a host-only network

    - by nXqd
The understanding about Host-only: I use VMware 7, Vmnet1 is the host-only adapter for host and it's IP is 192.168.209.1 . I'm really confused about this , does it connect to Vmnet 1 switch and Vmnet has DHCP also, it provieds IP range: Why it has virtual host adapter ( Vmnet 1) has IP which isn't in range while it's just an adapter in virtual network, it connects through switch Vmnet like the guest adapter Waiting for your answers , thanks in advance :)

  • Reverse lookup SERVFAIL

    - by Quan Tran
    I just set up a DNS server and a web server using Virtualbox. The IP address of the DNS server is 192.168.56.101 and the web server 192.168.56.102. Here are my configuration files for the DNS server: named.conf: // // named.conf // // Provided by Red Hat bind package to configure the ISC BIND named(8) DNS // server as a caching only nameserver (as a localhost DNS resolver only). // // See /usr/share/doc/bind*/sample/ for example named configuration files. // options { directory "/var/named"; dump-file "/var/named/data/cache_dump.db"; statistics-file "/var/named/data/named_stats.txt"; memstatistics-file "/var/named/data/named_mem_stats.txt"; //query-source address * port 53; //forward first; forwarders { 8.8.8.8; 8.8.4.4; }; listen-on port 53 { 127.0.0.1; 192.168.56.0/24; }; allow-query { localhost; 192.168.56.0/24; }; recursion yes; dnssec-enable yes; dnssec-validation yes; dnssec-lookaside auto; /* Path to ISC DLV key */ bindkeys-file "/etc/named.iscdlv.key"; managed-keys-directory "/var/named/dynamic"; }; logging { channel default_debug { file "data/named.run"; severity debug 10; print-category yes; print-time yes; print-severity yes; }; }; zone "quantran.com" in { type master; file "named.quantran.com"; }; zone "56.168.192.in-addr.arpa" in { type master; file "named.192.168.56"; allow-update { none; }; }; include "/etc/named.rfc1912.zones"; include "/etc/named.root.key"; named.quantran.com: $TTL 86400 quantran.com. • Windows 2008 running as KVM guest networking issue

    - by Evolver
I have a strange networking problem with Windows 2008 server R2, running as guest under KVM-Qemu host. Host is CentOS 6.3 x86_64. It's network settings: # cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-br0 DEVICE=br0 BOOTPROTO=static BROADCAST=xx.xx.xx.63 IPADDR=xx.xx.xx.4 NETMASK=255.255.255.192 NETWORK=xx.xx.xx.0 ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Bridge # cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 DEVICE=eth0 HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ONBOOT=yes BRIDGE=br0 IPV6INIT=yes IPV6_AUTOCONF=yes # cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=no HOSTNAME=my.hostname GATEWAY=xx.xx.xx.1 # cat /etc/sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 # tried to set it to 0 without any changes net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1 # tried to set it to 0 without any changes net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_source_route = 0 # tried to set it to 1 without any changes kernel.sysrq = 0 kernel.core_uses_pid = 1 net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables = 0 kernel.msgmnb = 65536 kernel.msgmax = 65536 kernel.shmmax = 68719476736 kernel.shmall = 4294967296 # route -n Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface xx.xx.xx.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.192 U 0 0 0 br0 169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 1004 0 0 br0 0.0.0.0 xx.xx.xx.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 br0 Node IP is xx.xx.xx.4, guest IP is xx.xx.xx.24, both host and guest is in the same network (/26). There are several linux guest running fine on the node (centos, debian, ubuntu, arch), and even Windows 2003 x86 also running fine. But Win2008 does not. I wonder, what's the difference. From Win2008 guest I can ping nothing: neither gateway, nor any other IP, even they are in the same subnet. From outside I also cannot ping guest. Almost. If I ping it from another server in same subnet, it's barely pinging, losing more than 90% packets. Firewall on the guest is completely off. Tried to set up network manually as well as via DHCP without success (BTW, DHCP set up network settings correctly). I suspect that is a kind of routing problem, but I spent whole day and still cannot figure it out. I would be appreciate for any help.

  • Macintosh computers cannot connect to router unless we re-start the modem and router

    - by dwwilson66
We have a small office network with DSL and a Netgear WNR-2000 wireless router acting as a DHCP server. There are nine devices connected to the router, wirelessly and wired. Whenever a Mac computer tries to connect, it's unsuccessful until we restart the router. Each of the possible devices that can connect to the network is listed in a table to assign certain IP addresses to certain MAC addresses. I am running WPA-PSK security. I can view the router status and see that the Mac's MAC address is visible to the router, but with a 169.* IP address, even though I'm assigning its MAC address to an IP address within my subnet. All non-Mac devices attached to the network connect properly, and can access the network properly even AFTER the Mac has not successfully connected. The network includes Windows devices, Roku boxes, printers and internet ready TVs. This to me, would point to a DHCP issue with how Mac communicates with my network. One interesting thing to note is that if a Mac connects and is prevented from sleeping, it will stay connected indefinitely; reissuing the security cert from the router works fine. I'm not sure if that's supposed to sever & re-establish a connection with the updated credentials or not, but I do stay connected. If the Mac sleeps and is awakened while the security cert is still valid, it connects fine. If the security certificate expires while the Mac is asleep, we need to restart the router. Restarting the router will ALWAYS assigns the proper IP addresses to the Mac equipment. I have heard anecdotally that Mac doesn't play well with 802.11n; I have not tested any other Wireless protocols. There's a couple issues here: First, I found this on Stack, Mac laptop crashing wireless router, but it's not rally applicable since the router isn't crashing. But, it does give some clues about Mac's accessing the network. I did change my encryption from WEP to WPA-PSK, but after about a week, we're still experiencing the issue. I'm not really sure if there's anything else useful in that question. Second, I'm considering getting a 802.11c router and hooking it up to the wireless N router. the 802.11c router would handle all the Mac traffic, and would be set up as a Mac-only subnet. Everything else would remain as is. However, I'm not sure if this is doable on a technology level...do I need a bridge or is this some way to do this with regular consumer gear?

  • Windows XP "automatic" services not starting

    - by Mala
Hi I have a fresh install of WinXP. The main problem is that every time I start it up, I have to go into Administrative Tools and start the needed services, such as DCOM, RTP, DHCP, etc etc. The only services that start automatically are: plug and play remote procedure server windows audio workstation All of the rest have to be started manually, in spite of the fact that they're listed as "automatic". Why won't they start on their own like they should? Thanks, Mala

  • pfSense gateway rules by IP ranges

    - by lpfavreau
Hello, I have pfSense (1.2.3) with a WAN (gateway 10.10.20.1/24) and an OPT1 (gateway 10.10.21.1/24). I also have a LAN (static 10.10.12.1/24, DHCP 10.10.12.128-199/24). I want to create rules so that traffic coming from LAN go through WAN if the source IP address is below 10.10.12.128/24 and through OPT1 otherwise. I would I go and make that happen? Thanks!

  • How to have your DNS servers forward queries for internet names

    - by Xavier Hutchinson
I have 2 Domain Controllers / DNS servers on Windows 2012, their IPs are 10.0.1.10 and 10.0.1.11 Another server acts as the DHCP server for clients, and sets their primary and secondary DNS to the IP addresses of the previously mentioned domain controllers / DNS servers. However I cannot resolve internet domain names, presumably as they are not hosted on the DNS servers. So my question is what do I have to do on my setup to resolve external domains? Thank you! Xavier.

  • LXC container can only access host via bridge

    - by vitaut
I have an LXC container with i686 Ubuntu 12.04 running on a x86_64 Ubuntu 12.04 host. I've set up a bridge using instructions here. However the ping from the container only goes through to the host and not to other machines on the local network. Similarly only the host and not the other machines see the container OS. The host's /etc/network/interfaces file looks as follows: auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet manual auto br0 iface br0 inet dhcp bridge_ports eth0 bridge_fd 0 bridge_maxwait 0 The container's /etc/network/interfaces file looks as follows: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp And here's the relevant part of the container's config: lxc.network.type=veth lxc.network.link=br0 lxc.network.flags=up Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? • How to configure 2 LAN Cards

    - by PatDiazJr
How do we configure two (2) LAN cards on one computer. One LAN card is connected to the internet via the DSL through a router, configured as DHCP. The other LAN card is to be connected via our office's IP/VPN (for email and other office online processes). I know it could be done, but I do not know how. By the way, the operating system is Windows XP.

  • TTL for PTR records on Windows 2003 Server DNS

    - by Kyle Brandt
When I look at the TTL (Time to Live) for PTR records (Reverse Lookup Zone) on one of our Windows 2003 DNS servers I see some are at 15 minutes, others are at 20. They have "Delete this record when it becomes stale" checked. These PTR records are for workstations that get IPs from Windows DHCP, so I think that creates the PTR records dynamically? How is TTL for these records set?

  • Microsoft VirtualPC Networking Issue

    - by Joda Maki
I am using Microsoft VPC running the supplied microsoft images to test IE6/7. The ip addresses that get assigned to these images are via dhcp and get valid ip addresses in my subnet. They can access the external internet just fine. However, they cannot ping my host machine, nor can my host machine ping them (using internal ip addresses). Thus, they can't access my webserver to test with. How is this possible and how do I fix it?

  • Disable WLan if Wired/Cable Network is available

    - by ifischer
The question says it all. All i want is that my W-Lan connection should be disabled whenever a wired connection is available. What would be the easiest way to do that in Ubuntu/Gnome? In all guides (for instance some about guessnet) i found i had to configure my whole network configuration (WPA keys, DHCP, ...), but i find that a bit too complicated for such a simple use case. I just want to disable wlan0 when eth0 is connected.

  • Command-line connect to wired network for Ubuntu

    - by Tim
    I like to know how to use command-line to connect to a wired network in general for Ubuntu 8.10? In my case, I connect a cable to my laptop but it doesn't work with my WICD. So I like to try command-line method. Here is the ifconfig of my network adapters: $ ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:c0:9f:8d:23:74 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) Interrupt:19 Base address:0x1800 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:4457 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:4457 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:493002 (493.0 KB) TX bytes:493002 (493.0 KB) wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0e:9b:ab:56:19 UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS PROMISC ALLMULTI MTU:576 Metric:1 RX packets:1508929 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:768144 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:806027375 (806.0 MB) TX bytes:78834873 (78.8 MB) wlan0:avahi Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0e:9b:ab:56:19 inet addr:169.254.5.92 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0 UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS PROMISC ALLMULTI MTU:576 Metric:1 wmaster0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-0E-9B-AB-56-19-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) Thanks and regards!
