    History of the problem This is continuation of my previous question How to start a thread to keep GUI refreshed? but since Jon shed new light on the problem, I would have to completely rewrite original question, which would make that topic unreadable. So, new, very specific question. The problem Two pieces: CPU hungry heavy-weight processing as a library (back-end) WPF GUI with databinding which serves as monitor for the processing (front-end) Current situation -- library sends so many notifications about data changes that despite it works within its own thread it completely jams WPF data binding mechanism, and in result not only monitoring the data does not work (it is not refreshed) but entire GUI is frozen while processing the data. The aim -- well-designed, polished way to keep GUI up to date -- I am not saying it should display the data immediately (it can skip some changes even), but it cannot freeze while doing computation. Example This is simplified example, but it shows the problem. I am all ears for real solutions, not some tricks.

I am unable to figure out all the bit manipulation happening in those three functions. Please help.

  • 8bpp Bitmap format on the Compact Framework

    Hi friends. I am messing around with Conway's Game of Life - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life I started out coding algorithmns for winforms and now want to port my work onto windows mobile 6.1 (compact framework). I came across an article by Jon Skeet where he compared several different algorithmns for calculating next generations in the game. He used an array of bytes to store a cells state (alive or dead) and then he would copy this array to an 8bpp bitmap. For each new generation, he works out the state of each byte, then copies the array to a bitmap, then draws that bitmap to a picturebox. void CreateInitialImage() { bitmap = new Bitmap(Width, Height, PixelFormat.Format8bppIndexed); ColorPalette palette = bitmap.Palette; palette.Entries[0] = Color.Black; palette.Entries[1] = Color.White; bitmap.Palette = palette; } public Image Render() { Rectangle rect = new Rectangle(0, 0, Width, Height); BitmapData bmpData = bitmap.LockBits(rect, ImageLockMode.ReadWrite, bitmap.PixelFormat); Marshal.Copy(Data, 0, bmpData.Scan0, Data.Length); bitmap.UnlockBits(bmpData); return bitmap; } His code above is beautifully simple and very fast to render. Jon is using Windows Forms but now I want to port my own version of this onto Windows Mobile 6.1 (Compact Framework) but . . . .there is no way to format a bitmap to 8bpp in the cf. Can anyone suggest a way of rendering an array of bytes to a drawable image in the CF. This array is created in code on the fly (it is NOT loaded from an image file on disk). I basically need to store an array of cells represented by bytes, they are either alive or dead and I then need to draw that array as an image. The game is particularly slow on the CF so I need to implement clever optimised algoritmns but also need to render as fast as possible and the above solution would be pretty dam perfect if only it was available on the compact framework. Many thanks for any help Any suggestions?

  • Silverlight 4 missing from VS 2010

    Hello, When I start a new Visual C# Silverlight project in the official release version (not the beta or the release candidate--the official release version) of Visual Studio 2010, I get only Silverlight 3 as an option in the Silverlight Version dropdown at the New Silverlight Application dialog box. I have installed SL 4, the SL4 tools for VS 2010, to no avail. I am running Windows XP SP3. Any ideas??? Thank you, Jon

  • Full-time programmer or software development consultant?

    In your opinion and experience, what's best - working full-time and long-term for one company, or part-time short-term on many smaller projects or parts of projects? What do you think are the pros and cons of both? I heard that being a consultant is more profitable and one would pick up more experience. Does that beat an 8 hours by 5 days (thanks to Jon Limjap for correction :)) job of coding in a cubicle?

    I know that trying to convert string "0" to boolean will fail, I also know how to fix this, thanks to Jon Skeets answers on other questions. What I would like to know is WHY does C# not recognise "0" as a valid input for a boolean conversion, surely you could look at it like 0 = false, 1 = true, or even -1 = false and 0 = true, anyways, my logic tells me that it could be a valid input, so is there a very good reason why its not? My bet is old vb6 would be able to recognize the string input "0" as valid.

  • AdventureWorks 2014 Sample Databases Are Now Available

      Where in the World is AdventureWorks? Recently, SQL Community feedback from twitter prompted me to look in vain for SQL Server 2014 versions of the AdventureWorks sample databases we’ve all grown to know & love. I searched Codeplex, then used the bing & even the google in an effort to locate them, yet all I could find were samples on different sites highlighting specific technologies, an incomplete collection inconsistent with the experience we users had learned to expect.  I began pinging internally & learned that an update to AdventureWorks wasn’t even on the road map.  Fortunately, SQL Marketing manager Luis Daniel Soto Maldonado (t) lent a sympathetic ear & got the update ball rolling; his direct report Darmodi Komo recently announced the release of the shiny new sample databases for OLTP, DW, Tabular, and Multidimensional models to supplement the extant In-Memory OLTP sample DB.  What Success Looks Like In my correspondence with the team, here’s how I defined success: 1. Sample AdventureWorks DBs hosted on Codeplex showcasing SQL Server 2014’s latest-&-greatest features, including:  In-Memory OLTP (aka Hekaton) Clustered Columnstore Online Operations Resource Governor IO 2. Where it makes sense to do so, consolidate the DBs (e.g., showcasing Columnstore likely involves a separate DW DB) 3. Documentation to support experimenting with these features As Microsoft Senior SDE Bonnie Feinberg (b) stated, “I think it would be great to see an AdventureWorks for SQL 2014.  It would be super helpful for third-party book authors and trainers.  It also provides a common way to share examples in blog posts and forum discussions, for example.”  Exactly.  We’ve established a rich & robust tradition of sample databases on Codeplex.  This is what our community & our customers expect.  The prompt response achieves what we all aim to do, i.e., manifests the Service Design Engineering mantra of “delighting the customer”.  Kudos to Luis’s team in SQL Server Marketing & Kevin Liu’s team in SQL Server Engineering for doing so.   • Upgrading only certain packages via the getdeb repo

    I'm a bit confused about how getdeb.net works now. The last time I got a package from there was a while ago; at that point the procedure was that you would just download a .deb for each package that you wanted to install/upgrade and then install it using dpkg -i. However the inexorable march of progress has lent its trumpets to this system as well, and getdeb installs are now done via their repo, which is registered with apt in /etc/apt/sources.list.d, after you install a single package that makes the changes to the apt database. I've installed that package, and I've discovered that aptitude dist-upgrade now wants to upgrade a lot of packages on my system that weren't ready for upgrades prior to the installation of the getdeb package. If I rename the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list to something with a different extension, then do aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade, it stops wanting to upgrade packages. So I gather that the default behaviour is now to upgrade all packages to the version available at getdeb. This is not particularly appropriate, since these packages are not as well tested as the officially released versions. Is there a config setting somewhere that will prevent upgrading packages to versions from the getdeb repo unless this action is specifically selected? I'd like to be able to pick and choose what packages are upgraded via getdeb.

  • HP Laptop recognizes hard drive just long enough to install windows

    I have an HP laptop, DV6500 (CTO). It refused to boot one day, so I ran some diagnostics (a friend lent me "Hirens Boot Disk", "UBCD" and "PC DR 6"). Everything passed, except for the hdd. I replaced the HDD with a used drive of unknown condition. Installed windows with no problems. Installed the wireless driver, tried to reboot ... no luck. So I went to Best Buy, bought a brand new Western Digital 320gb HDD. Put it in the machine, installed windows (vista home premium). Installed the wired networking driver. Tried to reboot. No luck. Put the first hdd back in the machine, reinstalled windows. Started to install some drivers, went to reboot, and the machine won't come back to life. Put the second hdd in the machine, rinse wash and repeat. I've replaced the memory, even though it passed diagnostics. Problem exists with both brand new memory, and old memory. The BIOS recognizes the hard drive. The computer freezes directly after the bios splash screen, and there is no hard drive activity light. I've tried two linux live distros (gentoo and ubuntu). Neither would run on this laptop, but will on a different HP laptop. UBCD and Hirens Boot Disk both ran, as did PC Doctor 6 which refuses to test anything (gets stuck at "enumerating hard disks"). Is there anything else I can try?

  • Switch Before Firewall / Router - Multiple public IPs

    I currently Have a 10Mbit Full duplex circuit connected to a small unmanaged switch which then connects to a Sonicwall Firewall / Router. I have several public IP addresses (/28) that are assigned to several devices in my setup. Now the problem is the small switch I have was lent to me and needs to be returned, I have replaced this switch with several other switches but for some reason any other switch I use causes the network to become extremely slow. I believe this is a problem with the autonegotiation of theses hubs, so I am thinking of purchasing a small managed switch (cisco 300 series) and making the receiving port on the swith Explicitly 10Mbit Full Duplex and see if this works. My question is, being that this is a managed switch and needs an IP, will I still be able to run my public ips through it? Say the circuit has 70.80.4.1 - 7 will I still be able to assign 70.80.4.2 to my firewall and 70.80.4.3 to my router connected to some other port in the switch? Will I have to assign the switch a public IP address in this range as well for it to "route" to those other devices or does the switch does not care what IPs goes through it while operating as a Layer 2 Switch? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced!

    Mac OS X Snow Leopard Windows Server 2003 Windows Folder "Videos" Share Permissions on Videos - Everyone NTFS Permissions on Videos - System (Full Control) - Domain Users (Modify) - Domain Admins (Full Control) Mac user Michael is a part of the Domain Users group. He connects to Videos using cifs://server/Videos and authenticates with his username Michael. Michael copies over a file "dance dance baby.avi". User Jon opens the Videos folder but cannot see the dance dance baby.avi file. Checking the dance dance baby.avi file permissions here is what I see: Everyone - Read, Write Domain Admins - Full Control Michael - Read, Write Owner of File - Michael So here's my question, how come when Michael copies a file over from a Mac, the permissions on the file get changed even though Michael has no rights to change permissions? If the same file is copied over from a Windows machine, it just inherits the proper permissions from the parent Video folder. Am I missing something? Are my permissions wrong? Thanks. Michael

  • Apache, modifying response codes from 404 to 301

    Hi, I'm running a magento installation on an apache server. There are many pages indexed in both google and linked to from external sites. I can't use 301 redirects in a .htaccess file as I can't be sure I will catch all the links. At the moment all requests are rewritten through magento and if a request isn't found magento returns a 404 File not Found. Is there a way of using one of the apache modules to filter the response* from magento and if a 404 Not Found is being sent back then replace the response with a standard 301 Redirect to the home page? E.g. Request to Magento -- Apache -- Rewrite to Magento index.php page -- page processed. Response if request exists -- return results (200) if request doesn't exist -- return 404 -- apache filter change response -- return 301 redirect to / I appreciate any help. Thanks, Jon as far as I am aware mod_rewrite is only used to rewrite requests and doesn't allow the modification of responses.

  • How to connect to IIS and SQL Server Express on Windows 7 host from XP Mode

    Hello, I am running IIS and SQL Server 2008 Express on my Windows 7 host, and I'd like to be able to connect to them in XP Mode. My host machine is not a part of a domain, only a workgroup. So far, I've tried these instructions on connecting to SQL Server, but I'm not able to telnet to port 1433 on the host from XP Mode. I'm also not able to connect using a SQL client. I'm not able to connect to IIS on the host from XP Mode. Advice from those who have had success doing this would be appreciated. Thanks, Jon.
