  • junit assert in thread throws exception

    - by antony.trupe
    What am I doing wrong that an exception is thrown instead of showing a failure, or should I not have assertions inside threads? @Test public void testComplex() throws InterruptedException { int loops = 10; for (int i = 0; i < loops; i++) { final int j = i; new Thread() { @Override public void run() { ApiProxy.setEnvironmentForCurrentThread(env);//ignore this new CounterFactory().getCounter("test").increment();//ignore this too int count2 = new CounterFactory().getCounter("test").getCount();//ignore assertEquals(j, count2);//here be exceptions thrown. this is line 75 } }.start(); } Thread.sleep(5 * 1000); assertEquals(loops, new CounterFactory().getCounter("test").getCount()); } StackTrace Exception in thread "Thread-26" junit.framework.AssertionFailedError: expected:<5> but was:<6> at junit.framework.Assert.fail(Assert.java:47) at junit.framework.Assert.failNotEquals(Assert.java:277) at junit.framework.Assert.assertEquals(Assert.java:64) at junit.framework.Assert.assertEquals(Assert.java:195) at junit.framework.Assert.assertEquals(Assert.java:201) at com.bitdual.server.dao.ShardedCounterTest$3.run(ShardedCounterTest.java:77)

  • Thread to receive the messages from serial port is not working using c#

    - by karthik
    I am using Serial port to receive the messages. The below function is running in a thread. When i debug i find that the thread is running properly. But "if (sp.IsOpen)" is always false, due to which the code is not executing inside the IF condition at all. It says the Port is closed. I will be having multiple serial ports in my system and i will not know, which port will receive the message. So i need to listen to all the ports in one Thread. How can i solve my problem here ? private void ListenerPorts() { log.Info("Listening Thread Started"); while (true) { //foreach (SerialPort sp in storeport) foreach (SerialPort sp in comPortsList) { if (sp.IsOpen) { sp.ReadTimeout = readTimeoutInMs; sp.WriteTimeout = writeTimeoutInMs; try { string msg = sp.ReadLine(); this.GetMessageRichTextBox("Message : " + msg + "\n"); sp.WriteLine(sp.PortName); if (msg.Contains("COM")) { // is AutoScan receiverPortName = sp.ReadLine(); this.updateLblStatusRichTextBox(sp.PortName + " is connected to " + msg + "\n"); } else { //standalone is uppercase ReceiverPortName = sp.ReadLine(); this.updateLblStatusRichTextBox(sp.PortName + " is connected to " + ReceiverPortName + "\n"); } } catch (Exception ex) { // no data System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine(sp.PortName + " : " + ex.Message); } } } } }

  • Is Stream.Write thread-safe?

    - by Mike Spross
    I'm working on a client/server library for a legacy RPC implementation and was running into issues where the client would sometimes hang when waiting to a receive a response message to an RPC request message. It turns out the real problem was in my message framing code (I wasn't handling message boundaries correctly when reading data off the underlying NetworkStream), but it also made me suspicious of the code I was using to send data across the network, specifically in the case where the RPC server sends a large amount of data to a client as the result of a client RPC request. My send code uses a BinaryWriter to write a complete "message" to the underlying NetworkStream. The RPC protocol also implements a heartbeat algorithm, where the RPC server sends out PING messages every 15 seconds. The pings are sent out by a separate thread, so, at least in theory, a ping can be sent while the server is in the middle of streaming a large response back to a client. Suppose I have a Send method as follows, where stream is a NetworkStream: public void Send(Message message) { //Write the message to a temporary stream so we can send it all-at-once MemoryStream tempStream = new MemoryStream(); message.WriteToStream(tempStream); //Write the serialized message to the stream. //The BinaryWriter is a little redundant in this //simplified example, but here because //the production code uses it. byte[] data = tempStream.ToArray(); BinaryWriter bw = new BinaryWriter(stream); bw.Write(data, 0, data.Length); bw.Flush(); } So the question I have is, is the call to bw.Write (and by implication the call to the underlying Stream's Write method) atomic? That is, if a lengthy Write is still in progress on the sending thread, and the heartbeat thread kicks in and sends a PING message, will that thread block until the original Write call finishes, or do I have to add explicit synchronization to the Send method to prevent the two Send calls from clobbering the stream?

  • cancelPreviousPerformRequestWithTarget is not canceling my previously delayed thread started with pe

    - by jmurphy
    Hello, I've launched a delayed thread using performSelector but the user still has the ability to hit the back button on the current view causing dealloc to be called. When this happens my thread still seems to be called which causes my app to crash because the properties that thread is trying to write to have been released. To solve this I am trying to call cancelPreviousPerformRequestsWithTarget to cancel the previous request but it doesn't seem to be working. Below are some code snippets. - (void) viewDidLoad { [self performSelector:@selector(myStopUpdatingLocation) withObject:nil afterDelay:6]; } (void)viewWillDisappear:(BOOL)animated { [NSObject cancelPreviousPerformRequestsWithTarget:self selector:@selector(myStopUpdatingLocation) object:nil]; } Am I doing something incorrect here? The method myStopUpdatingLocation is defined in the same class that I'm calling the perform requests. A little more background. The function that I'm trying to implement is to find a users location, search google for some locations around that location and display several annotations on the map. On viewDidLoad I start updating the location with CLLocationManager. I've build in a timeout after 6 seconds if I don't get my desired accuracy within the timeout and I'm using a performSelector to do this. What can happen is the user clicks the back button in the view and this thread will still execute even though all my properties have been released causing a crash. Thanks in advance! James

  • different thread accessing MemoryStream

    - by Wayne
    There's a bit of code which writes data to a MemoryStream object directly into it's data buffer by calling GetBuffer(). It also uses and updates the Position and SetLength() properties appropriately. This code works purposes 99.9999% of the time. Literally. Only every so many 100,000's of iterations it will barf. The specific problem is that the memory.Position property suddenly returns zero instead of the appropriate value. However, code was added that checks for the 0 and throws an exception which include log of the MemoryStream properties like Position and Length in a separate method. Those return the correct value. Further addition shows that when this rare condition occurs, the memory.Position only has zero inside this particular method. Okay. Obviously, this must be a threading issue. But this code is well locked. However, the nature of this software is that it's organized by "tasks" with a scheduler and so any one of several actual O/S thread may run this code at any give time--but never more than one at a time. So it's my guess that ordinarily it so happens that the same thread keeps getting used for this method and then on a rare occasion a different thread get used. Then due to compiler optimizations, the different thread never gets the correct value. It gets a "stale" value. Ordinarily in a situation like this I would apply a "volatile" keyword to the variable in question. But that (those) variables are inside the MemoryStream object. Does anyone have any other idea? Or does this mean we have to implement our own MemoryStream object? (Just like we end up having to do with practically every collection in .NET?) It's a shame to have such an awesome platform as .NET and have virtually the entire system useless as-is for seriously parallelized applications. If I'm wrong or you have other ideas, please advise. Sincerely, Wayne

  • Terminal-based snake game: input thread manipulates output

    - by enlightened
    I'm writing a snake game for the terminal, i.e. output via print. The following works just fine: while status[snake_monad] do print to_string draw canvas, compose_all([ frame, specs, snake_to_hash(snake[snake_monad]) ]) turn! snake_monad, get_dir move! snake_monad, specs sleep 0.25 end But I don't want the turn!ing to block, of course. So I put it into a new Thread and let it loop: Thread.new do loop do turn! snake_monad, get_dir end end while status[snake_monad] do ... # no turn! here ... end Which also works logically (the snake is turning), but the output is somehow interspersed with newlines. As soon as I kill the input thread (^C) it looks normal again. So why and how does the thread have any effect on my output? And how do I work around this issue? (I don't know much about threads, even less about them in ruby. Input and output concurrently on the same terminal make the matter worse, I guess...) Also (not really important): Wanting my program as pure as possible, would it be somewhat easily possible to get the input non-blockingly while passing everything around? Thank you!

  • Thread mutex behaviour

    - by Alberteddu
    Hi there, I'm learning C. I'm writing an application with multiple threads; I know that when a variable is shared between two or more threads, it is better to lock/unlock using a mutex to avoid deadlock and inconsistency of variables. This is very clear when I want to change or view one variable. int i = 0; /** Global */ static pthread_mutex_t mutex = PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALIZER; /** Thread 1. */ pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex); i++; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex); /** Thread 2. */ pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex); i++; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex); This is correct, I think. The variable i, at the end of the executions, contains the integer 2. Anyway, there are some situations in which I don't know exactly where to put the two function calls. For example, suppose you have a function obtain(), which returns a global variable. I need to call that function from within the two threads. I have also two other threads that call the function set(), defined with a few arguments; this function will set the same global variable. The two functions are necessary when you need to do something before getting/setting the var. /** (0) */ /** Thread 1, or 2, or 3... */ if(obtain() == something) { if(obtain() == somethingElse) { // Do this, sometimes obtain() and sometimes set(random number) (1) } else { // Do that, just obtain(). (2) } } else { // Do this and do that (3) // If # of thread * 3 > 10, then set(3*10) For example. (4) } /** (5) */ Where I have to lock, and where I have to unlock? The situation can be, I think, even more complex. I will appreciate an exhaustive answer. Thank you in advance. —Alberto

  • Strange thread behavior in Perl

    - by Zaid
    Tom Christiansen's example code (à la perlthrtut) is a recursive, threaded implementation of finding and printing all prime numbers between 3 and 1000. Below is a mildly adapted version of the script #!/usr/bin/perl # adapted from prime-pthread, courtesy of Tom Christiansen use strict; use warnings; use threads; use Thread::Queue; sub check_prime { my ($upstream,$cur_prime) = @_; my $child; my $downstream = Thread::Queue->new; while (my $num = $upstream->dequeue) { next unless ($num % $cur_prime); if ($child) { $downstream->enqueue($num); } else { $child = threads->create(\&check_prime, $downstream, $num); if ($child) { print "This is thread ",$child->tid,". Found prime: $num\n"; } else { warn "Sorry. Ran out of threads.\n"; last; } } } if ($child) { $downstream->enqueue(undef); $child->join; } } my $stream = Thread::Queue->new(3..shift,undef); check_prime($stream,2); When run on my machine (under ActiveState & Win32), the code was capable of spawning only 118 threads (last prime number found: 653) before terminating with a 'Sorry. Ran out of threads' warning. In trying to figure out why I was limited to the number of threads I could create, I replaced the use threads; line with use threads (stack_size => 1);. The resultant code happily dealt with churning out 2000+ threads. Can anyone explain this behavior?

  • Mixed-mode C++/CLI crashing: heap corruption in atexit (static destructor registration)

    - by thaimin
    I am working on deploying a program and the codebase is a mixture of C++/CLI and C#. The C++/CLI comes in all flavors: native, mixed (/clr), and safe (/clr:safe). In my development environment I create a DLL of all the C++/CLI code and reference that from the C# code (EXE). This method works flawlessly. For my releases that I want to release a single executable (simply stating that "why not just have a DLL and EXE separate?" is not acceptable). So far I have succeeded in compiling the EXE with all the different sources. However, when I run it I get the "XXXX has stopped working" dialog with options to Check online, Close and Debug. The problem details are as follows: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Fault Module Name: StackHash_8d25 Fault Module Version: 6.1.7600.16559 Fault Module Timestamp: 4ba9b29c Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: 000cdc9b OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Information 1: 8d25 Additional Information 2: 8d25552d834e8c143c43cf1d7f83abb8 Additional Information 3: 7450 Additional Information 4: 74509ce510cd821216ce477edd86119c If I debug and send it to Visual Studio, it reports: Unhandled exception at 0x77d2dc9b in XXX.exe: A heap has been corrupted Choosing break results in it stopping at ntdll.dll!77d2dc9b() with no additional information. If I tell Visual Studio to continue, the program starts up fine and seems to work without incident, probably since a debugger is now attached. What do you make of this? How do I avoid this heap corruption? The program seems to work fine except for this. Fix As Ben Voigt pointed out the use of any CRT functions (including native static initializers) requires proper initialization of the CRT (which happens in mainCRTStartup, WinMainCRTStartup, or _DllMainCRTStartup). I have added a mixed C++/CLI file that has a C++ main or WinMain: using namespace System; [STAThread] // required if using an STA COM objects (such as drag-n-drop or file dialogs) int main() { // or "int __stdcall WinMain(void*, void*, wchar_t**, int)" for GUI applications array<String^> ^args_orig = Environment::GetCommandLineArgs(); int l = args_orig->Length - 1; // required to remove first argument (program name) array<String^> ^args = gcnew array<String^>(l); if (l > 0) Array::Copy(args_orig, 1, args, 0, l); return XXX::CUI::Program::Main(args); // return XXX::GUI::Program::Main(args); } After doing this, the program now gets a little further, but still has issues (which will be addressed elsewhere): When the program is solely in C# it works fine, along with whenever it is just calling C++/CLI methods, getting C++/CLI properties, and creating managed C++/CLI objects Events added by C# into the C++/CLI code never fire (even though they should) One other weird error is that an exception happens is a InvalidCastException saying can't cast from X to X (where X is the same as X...) However since the heap corruption is fixed (by getting the CRT initialized) the question is done.

  • Accessing Instance Attributes from Secondary Thread (iPhone-SDK)

    - by Travis
    I have a class with an NSDictionary attribute. Inside this class I dispatch another thread to handle NSXMLParser handling. Inside my -didStartElement, I access the dictionary in the class (to compare an element found in the XML to one in the dictionary). At this point I get undefined results. Using NSLog (I'm not advanced in XCode debugging), I see that it bombs around access of the NSDictionary. I tried just iterating the dictionary and dumping the key/values inside the didStartElement and this bombs at different keys each time. The only thing I can conclude is that something is not kosher that I'm doing with regards to accessing main thread attributes from the secondary thread. I'm somewhat new to multithreading and am not sure what the best protocol is safely access attributes from additional threads. Thanks all.

  • wxWidgets: How to initialize wxApp without using macros and without entering the main application l

    - by m_pGladiator
    We need to write unit tests for a wxWidgets application using Google Test Framework. The problem is that wxWidgets uses the macro IMPLEMENT_APP(MyApp) to initialize and enter the application main loop. This macro creates several functions including int main(). The google test framework also uses macro definitions for each test. One of the problems is that it is not possible to call the wxWidgets macro from within the test macro, because the first one creates functions.. So, we found that we could replace the macro with the following code: wxApp* pApp = new MyApp(); wxApp::SetInstance(pApp); wxEntry(argc, argv); That's a good replacement, but wxEntry() call enters the original application loop. If we don't call wxEntry() there are still some parts of the application not initialized. The question is how to initialize everything required for a wxApp to run, without actually running it, so we are able to unit test portions of it?

  • How do I let main thread wait for the Timer.timer

    - by Kelvin
    Hi I am using System.Timer.Timer I always get NULL after running my programme and it only works if I add this.sleep(6000). Suppose the reason is the main thread ends but the timer hasn't finished ... Here is the class and I call the class from my main form. Class class1 { string finalResult = ""; public string getNumber() { RunTimer(); return finalResult; } pubic void RunTimer () { timer = new System.Timers.Timer(6000); timer.Interval = 1000; timer.Elapsed += new System.Timers.ElapsedEventHandler(cal); timer.Start(); } private void cal(object sender,System.Timers.ElapsedEventArgs e) { finalResult = READFROMCOMPORT; } }

  • How to get "all" (or the MAIN/LAUNCHER) android intent

    - by Christoph Jerolimov
    Hey, i want receive all start app intents (i think MAIN/LAUNCHER, see below) to log how often i used the application. So i do not want create an activity... I tried several receiver blocks, but for now nothing works: with, without priority, only the action, both, only the category and so on.. <receiver android:name=".Receiver" android:enabled="true" android:process=".e"> <intent-filter priority="100000" android:priority="100000"> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </receiver> Have anyone an idea? Thanks

  • Algorithm to determine thread "hotness"

    - by nickf
    I'm trying to come up with a way to determine how "hot" certain threads are in a forum. What criteria would you use and why? How would these come together to give a hotness score? The criteria I'm thinking of include: how many replies how long since the last reply average time between replies The problems this algorithm must solve: A thread which has 500 replies is clearly hot, unless the last reply was over a year ago. A thread with 500 replies that was replied to a second ago is clearly hot, unless it's taken 4 years to reach 500 replies. A thread with 15 replies in the last 4 minutes is really hot! Any ideas, thoughts or complete solutions out there?

  • Creating an independent draw thread using pthreads (C++)

    - by sagekilla
    Hi all, I'm working on a graphical application which looks something like this: while (Simulator.simulating) { Simulator.update(); InputManager.processInput(); VideoManager.draw(); } I do this several times a second, and in the vast majority of cases my computation will be taking up 90 - 99% of my processing time. What I would like to do is take out the processInput and draw functions and have each one run independently. That way, I can have the input thread always checking for input (at a reasonable rate), and the draw thread attempting to redraw at a given frame rate. My issue is I'm not sure how I can properly do this. How would I properly initialize my pthread_t and associated pthread_attr_t so that the thread runs without blocking what I'm doing? Any help or even a link is appreciated, thanks!

  • Why Does Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture Change between Page Rendering and HttpModule.PostReques

    - by Chad
    I'm creating an HttpModule that needs to know the value of Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture as set in an MVC application. That value is currently being set by the BaseController, but when my HttpModule.PostRequestHandlerExecute() method fires, it reverts to what the Culture was prior to page rendering. I have duplicated this by creating a simple web app with these steps: Module.PreRequestHandlerExecute: Set culture to A Page_Load: Culture is currently A. Set culture to B Module.PostRequestHandlerExecute: Current thread culture is A. I expected it to be B but it was changed between page rendering and PostRequestHandlerExecute Any idea why .Net changes this value or how I could get around it? The thread is the same, so something in .Net must be explicitly reverting the culture.

  • How to simulate different CPU frequency and limit RAM

    - by user351103
    Hi I have to build a simulator with C#. This simulator should be able to run a second thread with configureable CPU speed and limited RAM size, e.g. 144MHz and 50 MB. Of course I know that a simulator can never be as accurate as the real hardware. But I try to get almost similar performance. At the moment I'm thinking about creating a thread which I will stop/sleep from time to time. Depending on the desired CPU speed the simulator should adjust the sleep time of this thread and therefore simulate different cpu frequency. To measure the achieved speed I though about using PerformanceCounters. But with this approach I have the problem that I don't know how to limit the RAM size the thread could use. Do you have any ideas how to realize such a simulator? Thanks in advance!!
