  • subversion: how to manage tweaked files

    Our group is considering moving to SVN. But, I can't seem to find a way to do the following: I need to make minor tweaks locally to about 20 files in the repository w/o having SVN consider them "changed" and included in the commit. (Changes like communication time-outs and logging levels.) Ideally I would want to merge the tweaked files to newer versions in the repository. (Keeping the tweaked local file up-to-date with committed changes form other users.) I can't imagine we're unique in wanting/needing this. Are there best practices around this type of use case? One thing I'm considering is putting all the tweaked files into a branched "tweaked" working copy. Then merging my tweaked files into my "official" working copy. Then using a script, which compares the "tweaked" and "official" working copies, to update my ignore list. The script would also un-ignore and alert me to any files that had tweaks and other changes that, presumably, needed to be committed to the repository. This seems kinda hacky and I can't imagine there's not a better way.

    I have 32 bit 14.04 installed as the only OS on a older Toshiba Laptop. Unfortunately, when I installed it I did not set up a \home partition, which I had intended to do. What I want to do is to set up a \home partition and to transfer the files in my current \home directory to it. I have a 14.04 Live CD, so I could reinstall 14.04. I also have GParted on a Live CD. If I use GParted, I need precise instructions about how to proceed. I have plenty of disk space (200 GB) for either alternative and know how to decide space allocation for Linux partitions.   • Is it okay to just add a page or two PHP page to add some functionality to a Drupal site?

    I'm not familiar with Drupal, really. I can dig around the admin interface and navigate the directories and find the files that I need to just fine as well. What I'm really not familiar with is adding modules or extending modules. The site currently takes an order and sets up recurring payments through Ubercart and uses Authorize.net as a gateway. Right now, when a payment fails, a single e-mail gets sent out to the admin. We'd like to extend it to send an e-mail to the user and let them change their payment information through another page on the site. Authorize has a service called Silent Post URL that basically just posts a carbon copy in XML to whatever URL you give it. We'd like to accept that XML, deserialize it, parse the data, send a notice to the user and give them the page for updating their information. So, I guess it'll be two PHP pages. One for the XML API call from Authorize.net, and then one for the page for the users' to update their payment information. Could I just create two simple pages each handling their own tasks, or should I check out properly extending a module? If it's appropriate for me to write up the pages and not have to hook them into the module, what would be the best way to handle setting up what needs to get done? (The most experience I've had with extending a PHP site has been hacking away at someone else' poorly constructed, custom framework, so if anyone has any good resources perhaps on PHP best practices that they could share through a PM or a comment, I'd appreciate It) (Also, I'm still getting the hang of Stack Exchange, so if this isn't appropriate please let me know. I'll delete it.)

    Hi! I'm writing a WPF application that uses one document at a time. Is there any standard way to implement the management of the current document? What I mean are the following functions: New document: if there are not saved changes in the current document, a dialog box opens ('Do you want to save changes to {0}?') with Yes/No/Cancel buttons. If Cancel is hit, the operation stops. Open document: same dialog box as at new document, and an Open dialog opens after Save document: if the current document hasn't been saved, a Save dialog opens Save as: you can imagine... So, is there anything standard in the .NET framework like this or do I have to manually implement it?

  • How to use git to manage one codebase but have different environments

    I'm using git for a personal project at the moment and have run into a problem of having one codebase for two different environments and was wondering what the cleanest way to use git would be. Main Desktop I Use this machine for most of my development. I have a git repository here that I cloned off of an empty repository that I use on my internal server. I do most of my work here and push back to the internal server so I can use that as a master of truth and to ease making backups. Laptop I sometimes want to code on the road, so I did a clone from the internal server and created a new branch called "laptop-branch". Unfortunately some directories MSVC++ version are different than from the Main Desktop environment. I just modified the files in the "laptop-branch" and committed them there. Now I did a lot of changes while on vacation with my laptop, and want to push them to origin, but don't want the changes I made that were related to directories and compiler versions to be pushed back to origin. What would be the best way to get this done?

  • Best way to manage the persistence of a form state, to and from a database

    In a JSP/Servlet webapp, I have to implement a functionality that allows a user to save or restore a form state, that latter containing for instance some search criteria. In other words, the user must be able to save or restore field values of a form, at any time. On the same page that contains that form, there's also another little form that allows him to name his form state before saving it. Then, later he'll be able to recall that state, via a combobox, and refill dynamically the form with the state he selected. I know how to implement that by hand but I would prefer not to reinvent the wheel then I'd like to know if there are some frameworks managing that kind of functionality ? A mix between JSP taglib, filter class, jQuery or other JavaScript frameworks... My research has not give anything yet. Thank you in advance.

    In brief, my question is about member variables as pointers in unmanaged C++. In java or c#, we have "advanced pointer". In fact, we can't aware the "pointer" in them. We usually initialize the member of a class like this: member = new Member(); or member = null; But in c++, it becomes more confusing. I have seen many styles: using new, or leave the member variable in stack. In my point of view, using boost::shared_ptr seems friendly, but in boost itself source code there are news everywhere. It's the matter of efficiency,isn't it? Is there a guildline like "try your best to avoid new" or something?

  • C#, Manage concurrency in database access

    Hi there, I have written a while ago an application used by multiple users to handle trades creation. I haven't done development for some time now and can't remember how I managed the concurrency between the users and so would have liked your advices in term of design. The application was as follow: - One heavy client per user - A single database - Access to the database for each user to insert/update/delete trades - A grid in the application reflecting the trades table. That grid being updated each time someone changes a deal. My questions: 1- Do you confirm I shouldn't care about the connection to the database for each application. Considering that there is a singleton in each, I would expect on connexion per client with no issue. 2- How preventing the concurrency of the accesses? I guess I should lock when modifying the data, however don't remember how to. 3- How to have the grid automatically updated whenever the database is (by another user for example)?   • Exchange 2010 add mailbox server to DAG error

    Hello, i'm having some problems when adding a second mailbox server to my DAG in Exchange 2010. The test setup goes like this: 1x windows server 2008 (DC/DNS) 2x windows server 2008 (Exchange 2010) I have made sure all services are up and running and that the "Exchange Trusted Subsystem" account is set as a local admin. When i create a DAG i can add the first mailbox server (A) without any problems, but when i go to add the second (B) it gives me an error saying "Unable to contact the Cluster service on 1 other members (member) of the Database availability group. It does the same if i add (B) first and then try to add (A).     Salvete! I want to add the Powershell Console for Sharepoint to the tablist in Console2. I already have plain Powershell, but I want the Sharepoint Powershell snapin added automatically.   • How to add "create a new python file" to the registry

    I have Python 3.2 on a windows 7 operating system. The other day I thought that it would be convenient to add a link to create a new .py file in the right hand click "new" menu. I had worked with the registry before and looked up how to add an item to the "new" menu, but when I got to the registry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT the .py extension key was not there. I only know how to add something to the "new" menu using the extension key. I searched the web, but could not come up with any other ways. Python works perfectly fine, and I don't want to mess anything up by adding the extension key. So here are my questions: Will I mess up python or something else by adding a .py key?( I know it is dangerous to work with the registry, that is why I am looking for a safe solution) If not how can I go about doing this? OR Is there a different way to add "create a new python file" to the "new" menu? If so how can I do it? OR If the only way is very complicated should I forget about it? Thank you in advance.   • Cannot Add Particular Word to Dictionary

    I am trying to add a particular word to my custom dictionary using Word 2007. (The word happens to be "deserialized".) When I right-click on the word and click Add to Dictionary, the red underline does not go away. When I use the Spelling & Grammar tool from the Review tab on the ribbon, it will stop on that word; clicking the Add to Dictionary button has no effect. Oddly, I am able to add other words to the custom dictionary without a problem. I recently added "deserializes", for instance. I have only encountered this problem with that one particular word. Does anyone know what might be wrong and how I might fix it? Clarifications My document and all its content is set to English (United States). My custom dictionary is set to apply to All Languages, which is the default value. "Serialize" is in the US English default dictionary, but "deserialize" and its various forms is not.

    I'm having some trouble understanding Outlook terms (CommandBarPopup, CommandBarButton etc) like what is what in Outlook so please be patient. I would like to create couple of things: I would like to create new group (or just button but i read it's not possible to add a button to an existing group in ribbon) on new mail next to Signature/Add attachment in Message Ribbon. It would have to work the same way Signature works so when you press it it display couple of options. How can i create it? I would like to override a button "NEW" (where you can choose that you want to send new mail, make appointment or do other things) so that when you are in Main Window when you press the down arrow next to new button you could choose one of options i will add? Is this possible? How do I do it?
