• Copying Chinese Characters from PDF

  I am on a Windows 7 laptop, which I believe comes pre installed with all the language packs to my knowledge. I can see Chinese characters with no issues and normally can copy them fine. (From browser to Microsoft Office works great). I have many PDFs with chinese characters in them, whenever I try to copy them and paste them into another program such as a browser, Microsoft Office, ect I just get strange foreign characters such as: This is copying a line. It is in this order: Chinese characters, pinyin (chinese in roman letters), and then the Englis translation. ,ô t¯ing w?o shu¯o listen to me The pinyin is also getting messed up, as the tonal marks (accents) about each letter are moving to a space of their own. Any ideas on to how to fix this? Thank you very much!

• Common mistakes which lead to corrupted invariants

  My main source of income is web development and through this I have come to enjoy the wonders of programming as my knowledge of different languages has increased over the years through work and personal play. At some point I reached a decision that my college education was not enough and that I wanted to go back to school to get a university degree in either computer science or software engineering. I have tried a number of things in my life and it took me a while before I found something that I feel is a passion and this is it. There is one aspect of this area of study that I find throws me off though. I find the formal methods of proving program correctness a challenge. It is not that I have trouble writing code correctly, I can look at an algorithm and see how it is correct or flawed but I struggle sometimes to translate this into formal definitions. I have gotten perfect or near perfect marks on every programming assignment I have done at the college level but I recently got a swath of textbooks from a guy from univeristy of waterloo and found that I have had trouble when it comes to a few of the formalisms. Well at this point its really just one thing specifically, It would really help me if some of you could provide to me some good examples of common mistakes which lead to corrupted invariants, especially in loops. I have a few software engineering and computer science textbooks but they only show how things should be. I would like to know how things go wrong so that it is easier to recognize when it happens. Its almost embarrassing to broach this subject because formalisms are really basic foundations upon which matters of substance are built. I want to overcome this now so that it does not hinder me later.

• Upgrade MySQL on Plesk on Windows

  I just got a nasty surprise when I installed a website in Unicode Hindi (Indian language) on a server, all freshly entered unicode data is turning into question marks on the server. On my dev machine it works perfectly. I found that I have MySQL version 5.0.45 (installed in default by Plesk I guess). On my dev machine i have version 5.1.33. I believe the problem could be due to the version difference. The new version of MySQL apparently has better support for Unicode than the older one. I want to upgrade MySQL on my Windows Server machine with Plesk installed on it I am reluctant to just install the new version using the mysql installer because Plesk maintains some custom settings for mysql and I am afraid the new version could change those settings and break my db. Can anyone tell me do I have to do anything special to install MySQL on plesk on windows or can I just use the new version installer?

• Godaddy hosting with dynamic ip?

  I bought a domain name on godaddy.com let's call it www.website.com, but my server has a dynamic ip, how do I resolve this issue? What I've tried: get a dns account at dyndns.com let's call it dns.dyndns.com, so I set up godaddy to forward the domain to dns.dyndns.com. problem: When the user goes to www.website.com, they see dns.dyndns.com in the url bar. Bad So then I set up the forwarding on godaddy to forward with domain masking, but then the problem is now that users can't even see url paths/get queries/ or hash marks anymore! `www.website.com/folder/search?id=4#ajax=4` becomes just www.website.com in the url bar. bad! What do I do?

• Application Lifecycle Management Tools

  Leading a team comprised of three former teams means that we have three of everything.  Three places to gather requirements, three (actually eight or nine) places for customers to submit support requests, three places to plan and track work. We’ve been looking into tools that combine these features into a single product.  Not just Agile planning tools, but those that allow us to look in a single place for requirements, work items, and reports. One of the interesting choices is Software Planner by Automated QA (the makers of Test Complete).  It's a lovely tool with real end-to-end process support.  We’re probably not going to use it for one reason – cost.  I’m sure our company could get a discount, but it’s on a concurrent user license that isn’t cheap for a large number of users.  Some initial guesswork had us paying over $6,000 for 3 concurrent users just to get started with the Enterprise version.  Still, it’s intuitive, has great Agile capabilities, and has a reputation for excellent customer support. At the moment we’re digging deeper into Rational Team Concert by IBM.  Reading the docs on this product makes me want to submit my resume to Big Blue.  Not only does RTC integrate everything we need, but it’s free for up to 10 developers.  It has beautiful support for all phases of Scrum.  We’re going to bring the sales representative in for a demo. This marks one of the few times that we’re trying to resist the temptation to write our own tool.  And I think this is the first time that something so complex may actually be capably provided by an external source.   Hooray for less work!   I'm looking to develop a website and all the work will be done remotely (no local dev server). The reason for this is that my shared hosting company a2hosting has a specific configuration (symfony,mysql,git) that I don't want to spend time duplicating when I can just ssh and develop remotely or through netbeans remote editing features. My question is how can I use git to separate my site into three areas: live, staging and dev. Here's my initial thought: public_html (live site and git repo) testing: a mirror of the site used for visual tests (full git repo) dev/ticket# : git branches of public_html used for features and bug fixes (full git repo) Version Control with git: Initial setup: cd public_html git init git add * git commit -m ‘initial commit of the site’ cd .. git clone public_html testing mkdir dev Development: cd /dev git clone ../testing ticket# all work is done in ./dev/ticket#, then visit www.domain.com/dev/ticket# to visually test make granular commits as necessary until dev is done git push origin master:ticket# if the above fails: merge latest testing state into current dev work: git merge origin/master then try the push again mark ticket# as ready for integration integration and deployment process: cd ../../testing git merge ticket# -m "integration test for ticket# --no-ff (check for conflicts ) run hudson tests visit www.domain.com/testing for visual test if all tests pass: if this ticket marks the end of a big dev sprint: make a snapshot with git tag git push --tags origin else git push origin cd ../public_html git checkout -f (live site should have the latest dev from ticket#) else: revert the merge: git checkout master~1; git commit -m "reverting ticket#" update ticket# that testing failed with the failure details Snapshots: Each major deployment sprint should have a standard name and should be tracked. • Microsoft Word Document Recovery seems unresolvable

  We work on a server (Windows Server 2003 Enterprise) that a bunch of us developers remote in using Remote Desktop Connection, and now every "other" time I open up word I get this Document Recovery pane: As you can see, "Delete" and "Show Repairs" are disabled (I don't think this is my document). "Open" or "Save As" works, but it never marks this document recovered, it just keeps coming up every "other" time I open up word. I don't even care about this document. How can I remove this document from the list so that it doesn't come up anymore? Update: As per Moab's comment, I had the user delete the file. But the Document Recovery still shows up with that item every other time Word is opened. The only difference now is that clicking on "Open" produces this (obvious) message: How can I clear this list? BTW, the user that owned this document was never getting the Document Recovery pane.

EDIT: To clarify: In one sheet are presented for example student exam marks on first year: John 10 8 10 7 Nick 8 9 8 9 Maria 7 8 8 7 On 2nd sheet there are student informations on the second year: John 9 9 10 8 Nick 8 8 9 7 Maria 7 6 8 8 I want to have give some kind of final certificate for student so summary information should be presented on the third sheet. I doesn't need to be on click. There could be drop down list on the third sheet.

• dell u2410 3dMark Benchmark distortion problems

  Ive been doing burn in testing for a new system I have put together and I am running into some video distortion problems with running the 3DMark benchmark tools (Both 06 and Vantage). The graphics will be fine, then sometimes during a test switch the screen will light up with thin horizontal ranibow lines (Something that looks very "glitchy") If i turn the monitor off and back on it clears up. All the tests "pass" and my system gets good marks but it concerns me if I might have problems with games (The screen returns to normal if I dont resest monitor and just let tests pass). I want to return a problem component now before its too late if it is something with the new hardware. Also, I am monitoring temp with thermal laser gun and the card itself is not going above 65c. Any ideas? System: Asrock x58 Xtreme - Last BIOS (1.80) EVGA Geforce GTX 285 w/ latest nvidia drivers (Connect via DVI1) Dell U2410(Set to 59hz refresh 1900x1202 -although I believe benchmarks run 1200x1024) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 12Gb DDR3 1600 RAM

• General questions regarding open-source licensing

  I'm looking to release an open-source iOS software project but I'm very new to the licensing side of the things. While I'm aware that the majority of answers here will not lawyers, I'd appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction. With the exception of the following requirements I'm happy for developers to largely do whatever they want with the projects source code. I'm not interested in any copyleft licensing schemes, and while I'd like to encourage attribution in derivative works it is not required. As such, my requirements are as follows: Original source can be distributed and re-distributed (verbatim) both commercially and non-commercially as long as the original copyright information, website link and license is maintained. I wish to retain rights to any of the multi-media distributed as part of the project (sound effects, graphics, logo marks, etc). Such assets will be included to allow other developers to easily execute the project, but cannot be re-distributed in any manner. I wish to retain rights to the applications name and branding. Futher to selecting an applicable license, I have the following questions: The project makes use of a number of third-party libraries (all licensed under variants of the MIT license). I've included individual licenses within the source (and application) and believe I've met all requirements expressed in these licenses, but is there anything else that needs to be done before distributing them as part of my open-source project? Also included in my project is a single proprietary, close-sourced library that's used to power a small part of the application. I'm obviously unable to include this in the source release, but what's the best way of handling this? Should I simply weak-link the project and exclude it entirely from the Git project?

• Different background color for multiple filetypes in vim

  Is it possible to have different background colors in vim (ie. one light, one dark) when dealing with files with multiple filetypes (ie. :set ft=html.php)? In PHP code with HTML embedded, it can be difficult to see one single PHP statement amongst dozens of HTML lines, see below. I'll settle for anything, be it different bg color, a marker in the margin, a second left margin (one vim plugin does this for marks), maybe highlighting the <?php tag for example (although that's less than ideal) EDIT: I don't think this is possible at the syntax level as the syntax appears to use a limited number of elements (String, Function, Identifier...). This is no doubt to allow for the easy integration with colorschemes. SyntaxAttr is a good plugin to demonstrate this. Put it over any part of the code and it will tell you what syntax group it belongs to.

C-c C-s (mail-send) sends the message and marks the mail buffer unmodified, but leaves that buffer selected so that you can modify the message (perhaps with new recipients) and send it again. C-c C-c (mail-send-and-exit) sends and then deletes the window or switches to another buffer But both ( ctrl+c ctrl+s ) and (ctrl-c crtl+c) are not working ps:Thought it's not programming related. it's programmer environment related question-hoping it won't be closed :)

  Background Using LaTeX to write a book. When a user purchases the book, the PDF will be generated automatically. Problem The PDF should have a watermark that includes the person's name and contact information. Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, invisible watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution).   I read the manual page of the "mount" command, at it reads as below: All files accessible in a Unix system are arranged in one big tree, the file hierarchy, rooted at /. These files can be spread out over several devices. The mount command serves to attach the file system found on some device to the big file tree. My questions are: Where is this "big tree" located? Suppose I have 2 disks, if I mount them onto some point in the "big tree", does linux place some "special marks" in the mount point to indicate that these 2 "mount directories" are indeed seperate disks?

• Is my HD broken? Can i use it for anything?

  Someone suggested formatting my HD so i wont try to read bad data. From what i understand the OS marks which clusters are bad and skips them. So after copying all my data i did a quick format to NTFS. I copied files with an error then i right clicked and tried to create a new folder. I was greeted by this message. I have 926 of 931gb free. Is my external HD broken?

  Background Using LaTeX to write a book. When a user purchases the book, the PDF will be generated automatically. Problem The PDF should have a watermark that includes the person's name and contact information. Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, undetectable watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution). • Boot failure randomly. Can someone help?

  I often get stuck at the boot on battery. I can suspend and hibernate without any trouble (even on battery). If I plug the energy cable everything goes right most of the time (edited June 13). Adding "acpi=off" doesn't solve the issue. Disabling power save from LAN at BIOS doesn't solve this too. Memory test seems to be ok: I can even compile a kernel without a problem: Has someone a tip for this? (I have the same questions marks in my mind as the image shows if not more :-/ ) obs.: this is an upgraded installation from Natty alpha. edited I (May 22): I've installed a brand new final 11.04 and got the bug again. edited II (June 13): I thought it was solved but it is not. After spending eight days off, the same problem happened even with the power cable connected. I had to reboot about 6 times until success. edited III (June 14): I can boot (even with battery) if I disconnect the cable and take off the battery for a few seconds. This lead me to conclude that maybe something is kept into memory of some hardware. Maybe or maybe not related but I also have touchpad issues (jumps) with this machine. edited IV (June 25): I opened gconf-editor and went to apps gnome-power-manager and disabled everything possibly related to suspend or hibernate. No help. Also I grabbed a Fedora live usb pendrive and got the same problem: So I think it is a hardware problem related issue.

• Un-table a cell range in Excel 2007

  In Excel 2007, if you highlight a block of cells and then "Format as Table", it doesn't just apply colors and formatting, it somehow marks those cells as being a table. Now I want to get rid of the table, but keep all the cells (i.e. keep the data). So I tried clearing the table style and formatting, but Excel still recognizes those cells as being a table. I can tell because: When I select a cell that was in the table, Excel still displays the "Table Tools / Design" tab I cannot merge cells that were in the table <- this is what's annoying me So, how do I un-table those cells? I want to keep all the cell data and formatting, but have Excel not recognize them as a table.
