  I don't understand the difference between break and last (flags of rewrite). The documentation is rather abstruse. I've tried to switch between the two in some of my configs, but I couldn't spot any difference in behavior. Can someone please explain these flags in more detail? Preferably with an example that shows different behavior when flipping one flag to another.

• Nginx multiple upstream servers on the same domain via diferent url

  Hello. I am trying to rout trafic to different upstream servers (that serve different applications and not for load balancing). The incoming trafic has the same domain name but different URL. Here is an example of my configuration: http { upstream backend1 { server 127.0.0.1:8080 fail_timeout=0; server 127.0.0.1:8081 fail_timeout=0; } upstream backend2 { server 127.0.0.1:8090 fail_timeout=0; server 127.0.0.1:8091 fail_timeout=0; } server { listen 80; server_name my_server.com; root /home/my_server; location /serve_me { fastcgi_pass backend1; include fastcgi_params; } location / { fastcgi_pass backend2; include fastcgi_params; } } } It seems that whatever trafic comes in (including "my_server.com/serve_me") goes to backend2. • Dealing with multiple parameters in Nginx rewrite

  I have a rewrite that nginx calls like so: location ~* (css)$ { rewrite ^(.*),(.*)$ /min/index.php?f=$1,/min/$2 last; } And it's used on pages like this: http://domain.com/min/framework.css,dropdown.css Works all fine and dandy, but it's not scalable. Adding another element to the URL means I have to directly edit the nginx config. Ideally, I'd like to have nginx rewrite according to how many comma-delimited parameters are passed through the URL, rather than setting a fixed amount in the config. Is this possible?

  I need some help in settingup/installing and configuring nginx LEMP stack on a fresh new VPS i have. The specs of the CentOS 5.7 VPS are 2GB DDR3 ECC RAM(4GB burst), 1 core 1.5Ghz(3Ghz burst) and 100GB RAID 10 storage, unmetered bandwidth @ 100Mpbs all for a whopping $25/month(unbeatable, yeah i know :) Anyways i have followed this LEMP(will also need MySQL and PHP) stack guide on linode http://library.linode.com/lemp-guides/centos-5 but basically what i want is to be able to host multiple website on this webserver after everything is setup. I am used to using DirectAdmin control panel on other server and want to have things setup so i can host multiple websites...mostly wordpress and drupal themes. Lets say 10 websites on this nginx web server. So can someone please help me on what i need to do to take "full" advantage of nginx power and performance, while been able to easily manage these multiple websites (wordpress and drupal themes)?   2010/09/19 14:52:07 [error] 1419#0: *10220 recv() failed (104: Connection reset by peer) while reading response header from upstream, client: [...], server: [...], request: "POST /[...] HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/server/php-fpm.sock:", host: "[...]", referrer: "[...]" This is the error I'm receiving randomly. 95% of the time my setup works perfectly, but once in a while I'm getting 502 for 3-4 subsequent requests. I'm using Unix socket between the server and the PHP process as you can see, also have set up FastCGI params (SCRIPT_FILENAME), etc. correctly. What can I do about it to strengthen the connection between these services? Thank you very much in advance.

  We are using nginx-tornado-django to provide web services. That is, no web page frontend. The nginx server serves as a load-balancer. The server has 8 cores, so we launched 8 tornado-django processes on every server. Memcached is also deployed to gain better performance. The requests per day is about 1 million per server. We use MySQL as backend DB. The code is tested and correct. Our profiling shows that normally every request are processed within 100ms. The problem is, we find that about 10 percent of the requests suffers from time-out issue. Many requests didn't even reach tornado. I really don't have much experience on tuning of nginx/tornado/MySQL. Right now I don't have a clue on what is going wrong. Any advise is appreiciated.

  Is it possible to use the current status code as a parameter in try_files? For example, we try to provide a host specific 503 static response, or a server-wide fallback if it wasn't found: error_page 503 @error503; location @error503 { root /path_to_static_root/; try_files /$host/503.html /503.html =503; } There are a number of these directives, so it would be convenient to do something like: error_page 404 @error error_page 500 @error error_page 503 @error location @error { root /path_to_static_root/; try_files /$host/$status.html /$status.html =$status; } But the Variables documentation doesn't list anything that we could use to do this. Is it possible, or is there an alternative way to do this?

• NGINX rewrite for vanity URLs when file doesn't exist (try_files and rewrite together)

  I'm trying to get vanity URLs on my server. If the file path from the URL doesn't exist, I want to rewrite the URL to profile.php, but if my users have periods in their usernames, their vanity URL doesn't work. I can get either one to work successfully on their own, but can't sort out the configuration that would let me coexist. • Nginx : Proper use of limit_req_zone and limit_req

  I have 2 website running on VPS. Their purpose is sharing music files and publishing news. Both of them use wordpress. What I am trying is that I want to prevent little hackers from flooding the webserver and putting stress on the server to make it crash. The problem is that after using limit_req_zone and limit_req my website became very slow. Browsing Wordpress control panel takes a long long time. I tried changing values but it didn't improve much. I guess the problem is Wordpress because it's the only script I am using on both front and back end. Here is the last setting which seems to be more responsive than others : limit_req_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=flood:5m rate=10r/m; location ~ \.php$ { limit_req zone=flood burst=100 nodelay; } What are the optimal values that should be used in my case (wp) ? I want the website have it's normal behavior, On the other hand stopping lifeless people from flooding. Another question, Is it safe and enough to use limit_req only on php files ?

This setup works great. I would like to add another webserver for image serving, but it will not be part of the load-balanced pool. Is it possible to proxy pass from the load-balanced web servers to the image server and have the response redirected to the client? Client--external LB--internal web server--internal image server I've gotten proxy pass working when I remove the LB from the equation, but no luck when trying to use it.

• Restart nginx without sudo?

  So I want to be able to cap:deploy without having to type any passwords. I have setup all private keys so I can get to the remote servers fine, and am now using svn over ssh, so no passwords there. I have one last problem, I need to be able to restart nginx. Right now I have sudo /etc/init.d/nginx reload. That is a problem b/c it uses the capistrano password, the one I just removed b/c I am using keys. Any ideas on how to restart nginx w\out a password?

  Here are the two rewrite rules: This one works rewrite ^/knowledgebase/([0-9]+)/[a-z0-9_-]+.html$ /./knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&id=$1 last; This one doesn't rewrite ^/announcements/([0-9]+)/[a-z0-9_-]+.html$ /./announcements.php?id=$1 last; There is no difference between the two as far as I can see. The url to be rewritten for announcements is: /announcements/2/New-Site-Design.html And should be rewritten to: /announcements.php?id=2 I really can't see how the announcements one doesn't work compared to the knowledgebase one. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

• Reverse proxy for a subdirectory in nginx
