  • How should I configure nginx caching headers for a "baked" static file blog? (Octopress)

    - by Doug Stephen
I recently deployed an Octopress blog (which is a blogging platform built around Jekyll). It's a static-site blog generator, with no dynamic content or databases to muck about with. It's being served up by nginx. My question is, what is the appropriate expires directive or Cache-Control header that I should set to make sure that visitors get the most up-to-date version of the site when they visit without having to manually refresh? Since the site is just .html files it seems to get cached pretty aggressively. I've tried a million different combinations of expires modified + xxxx and even straight up expires off but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. I'm very new to dealing with caching like this, specifically, on static files that change frequently, and obviously if the site hasn't been changed then I'd like for it to be served up out of the cache. Update (still not solved though): I found open_file_cache, tweaked that. Still no dice. It seems like what I might want to do is use nginx as a proxy cache and use Apache with ETags? Is there really no convenient way to make nginx play nicer with conditional requests from the client? TL;DR: I'm running a static-file blog and I'd like to set up nginx to only serve from the cache if the blog hasn't been updated recently, but I'm too stupid to figure it out myself because I'm relatively new to web servers.

  • Can't get PHP to work with my Nginx virtual host. Keeps returning "No input file specified"

    - by steve
    I'm trying to get phpmyadmin up and running on my server. Here's the nginx vhost for it: server { listen 80; server_name server.mydomain.net; location /phpmyadmin/ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /usr/share/phpmyadmin$fastcgi_script_name; include /opt/nginx/conf/fastcgi_params; alias /usr/share/phpmyadmin/; } root /opt/nginx/html/; } Here's my fastcgi_params file fastcgi_param GATEWAY_INTERFACE CGI/1.1; fastcgi_param SERVER_SOFTWARE nginx; fastcgi_param QUERY_STRING $query_string; fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method; fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type; fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length; fastcgi_param REQUEST_URI $request_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_URI $document_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT $document_root; fastcgi_param SERVER_PROTOCOL $server_protocol; fastcgi_param REMOTE_ADDR $remote_addr; fastcgi_param REMOTE_PORT $remote_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_ADDR $server_addr; fastcgi_param SERVER_PORT $server_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_NAME $server_name; I compiled lighthttpd so I could pull out spawn-fcgi. That is now sitting in /usr/local/bin and is accompanied by my php5-cgi launcher which looks like: #!/bin/sh /usr/local/bin/spawn-fcgi -a 127.0.0.1 -p 9000 -u www-data -C 2 -f /usr/bin/php5-cgi I run this and can see that it's successfully launched by doing a ps aux | grep php. However, whenever I try to open phpmyadmin, I get the error "No input file specified" What am I doing wrong? :/

  • nginx - redirect a certain path to another domain

    - by Eli
Hey there. I am very unfamiliar with nginx, as a forewarning, and also can't find any actual references on the regex system they use. So right now it's a black box to me. All I want to do is redirect a user trying to go to www.mydomain.com/mydirectory/X to www.myotherdomain.com/X . Seems like I should be using the rewrite command but the syntax of the regex is eluding me. Thanks in advance.

  • Redirect to a web server depending on location with nginx

    - by fceruti
Im working on a web site that has to be reachable from many countries under the same domain. Id like to know how can I receive a request with nginx (or any other static file server), and send it to different web servers depending on IP's location. I mean, what is the point on having multiple db machines on country A and B, if the server that serves you the page is chosen by round robin. Maybe theres another solution to my problem, and I would be very happy if someone can explain it to me.

  • nginx and trailing slashes on $document_root?

    - by shadowhand
I use the following configuration for nginx: http://gist.github.com/340956 However, this configuration causes a No input file specified error with PHP. The only way I have been able to solve it is by altering this line: fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root/$fastcgi_script_name; Note the "/" between $document_root and $fastcgi_script_name. I was informed that this is the wrong configuration but no one has been able to tell me exactly why my configuration requires this extra slash. How can I get rid of that extra slash?

  • nginx subdomain rewrite

    - by ivan73
I need a nginx rewrite rule to rewrite from: http://some-keyword.example.com to www. example.com/keyword.php?keyword=$some-keyword while domain without www in front still rewrites to www.example.com and 'www' isn't taken as a keyword. Please could you help me to solve this problem, how to write these two rules?

  • How do I enable PHP’s flush() with nginx+PHP-FPM?

    - by abrahamvegh
I’m using nginx with PHP-FPM (APC is installed). I need PHP’s flush() to work. Is this possible? Things I’ve tried so far: Disabling all output buffering in php.ini, as well as output compression. Disabling gzip in nginx’s configuration. Setting nginx’s fastcgi_* buffering settings and fastcgi_max_temp_file_size to zero. I’m sure I must be missing something, since I’ve run across many posts here and elsewhere where people claimed they’ve got it working, but I’m having no luck, it would seem.

  • Why does using nginx as a reverse proxy break local links?

    - by tsvallender
I've just set up nginx as a reverse proxy, so some sites served from the box are served directly by it and others are forwarded to a Node.js server. The site being served by Node.js, however, is displayed with no CSS or images, so I assume the links are somehow being broken, but don't know why. The following is the only file in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled: server { listen 80; ## listen for ipv4 listen [::]:80 default ipv6only=on; ## listen for ipv6 server_name dev.my.site; access_log /var/log/nginx/localhost.access.log; location / { root /var/www; index index.html index.htm; } location /myNodeSite { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080/; proxy_redirect off; proxy_set_header Host $host; } } I had thought perhaps it was trying to find them in /var/www due to the first entry, but removing that doesn't seem to help.

  • Can I use nginx to start EC2 instances on demand?

    - by Gabe Hollombe
TL;DR - Is there a way to make nginx act as an elastic load balancer that will spin up EC2 instances on demand, allowing for the case when periods of no demand mean no instances will be running? Longer explanation - I have an nginx server that proxy_pass'es requests to a server on EC2. This server doesn't get many requests, so I'd like to keep the server spun down during periods of inactivity (I already have a script to do this). Then, when the instance is spun down and nginx gets a request for that instance, it will time out when trying to get a response from it. At this point, can I somehow trigger a shell command on the server to use EC2's command line tools to spin up the instance, then re-try the user's request after it has started?

  • How do I get nginx to issue 301 requests to HTTPS location, when SSL handled by a load-balancer?

    - by growse
I've noticed that there's functionality enabled in nginx by default, whereby a url request without a trailing slash for a directory which exists in the filesystem automatically has a slash added through a 301 redirect. E.g. if the directory css exists within my root, then requesting http://example.com/css will result in a 301 to http://example.com/css/. However, I have another site where the SSL is offloaded by a load-balancer. In this case, when I request https://example.com/css, nginx issues a 301 redirect to http://example.com/css/, despite the fact that the HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO header is set to https by the load balancer. Is this an nginx bug? Or a config setting I've missed somewhere?

  • how to run apache2 or nginx + php on iPhone? [closed]

    - by Rubytastic
Is there a way to run Apache2 or Nginx with PHP on the iPhone? Im surprised so little info is available on this topic, as it seems quite interesting to host websites on an iPhone. Consider slow 3G connections or no 3G at all, and you want to demonstrate some webapplication you wrote... hosting them on the iphone would be an awsome way to fix the speed issues with the mobile network speeds. For the Ipad there are several addoptions available, nothing much usable on iphone / nginx apache2 search terms anywhere :( I want to host some websites on my iphone for demonstration purposes. So when im "out the office" Ill be able to very fast browse some websites that I host on the Iphone. there is no decent information out there, does anyone have a lead on how to do this? My question is specific to if nginx or apache2 can be run on the iphone, it would be nice if PHP would run on it too

  • In Nginx, can I handle both a location:url or a content-type: text/html response from memcached?

    - by Sean Foo
I'm setting up an nginx - apache reverse proxy where nginx handles the static files and apache the dynamic. I have a search engine and depending on search parameter I either directly forward the user to the page they are looking for or provide a set of search results. I cache these results in memcached as key:/search.cgi?q=foo value: LOCATION:http://www.example.com/foo.html and key:/search.cgi?q=bar value: CONTENT-TYPE: text/html <html> .... .... </html> I can pull the "Content-type...." values out of memcached using nginx and send them to the user, but I can't quite figure out how to handle a returned value like "Location..." Can I?

  • Why is Nginx ignoring the access_log directive when post_action is specified?

    - by Chris
    Hi, in the location below nginx writes a custom download log. Everything works fine except when there is a post_action directive. I seems that nginx skips the access_log directive. Here is the config: location /download_intern/ { internal; if ($uri ~* ^/download_intern/([0-9]+)/) { set $transferID $1; set $server $arg_ip; set $url $arg_url; proxy_pass http://$server:80/$url; break; } log_format download '$remote_addr [$time_local] $upstream_cache_status "$scheme://$host$request_uri" $status [$transferID] $body_bytes_sent'; access_log /opt/nginx/logs/server.download_log download; # without this line the download log file is being written post_action /done; } location /done { internal; # log the transfer on the main server proxy_pass http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80/download_end/?tid=$transferID; }

  • When to use Nginx PHP Fast CGI with a TCP socket instead of a UNIX socket?

    - by user64204
I've followed this guide to setup PHP in FastCGI mode with Nginx. This guide describes 2 ways of doing it: TCP socket and UNIX socket. I've ran some Apache Benchmark on my locale machine and here are the results: Below tests ran multiple times to get better average statistics: $ ab -c 200 -n 100000 http://.... APACHE: 1800 req/sec NGINX (TCP socket): 2500 req/sec NGINX (UNIX socket): 15000 req/sec As far as I understand, there is overhead with using a TCP socket rather than a UNIX socket, hence the better performance with the latter. However I was not expecting such a performance difference given that the TCP socket is on the localhost, and therefore would like to ask the following question: Q: Given the huge performance gain with using a UNIX socket, what are the configuration scenarios where it would make sense to use a TCP socket instead?

  • How to rewrite the domain part of Set-Cookie in a nginx reverse proxy?

    - by Tobia
I have a simple nginx reverse proxy: server { server_name external.domain.com; location / { proxy_pass http://backend.int/; } } The problem is that Set-Cookie response headers contain ;Domain=backend.int, because the backend does not know it is being reverse proxied. How can I make nginx rewrite the content of the Set-Cookie response headers, replacing ;Domain=backend.int with ;Domain=external.domain.com? Passing the Host header unchanged is not an option in this case. Apache httpd has had this feature for a while, see ProxyPassReverseCookieDomain, but I cannot seem to find a way to do the same in nginx.

  • How to configure Nginx to serve a variety of back-ends via multiple FCGI processes?

    - by Ben Horton
I've seen a lot of tutorials showing one how to set up PHP/Python/Perl/RoR on nginx via various FCGI processes. None of the tutorials that I found show one how to serve multiple FCGI services off one server. How would one configure the stable nginx (nginx-0.7.64) to serve multiple FCGI processes (one for each of the above languages)? Example addresses for each FCGI process are as follows: 127.0.0.1:8080 - PHP 127.0.0.1:8081 - Python 127.0.0.1:8082 - Perl 127.0.0.1:8083 - Ruby on Rails An example configuration file that shows one how to implement multiple FCGI's off one server is really what I need. Perhaps others will benefit as well.

  • How to make nginx only respond to one domain?

    - by larryzhao
I am pretty new to nginx, I host my rails application on nginx+passenger. I want my website to be accessible to only one domain. So I set my nginx conf like the following: server { listen 80; server_name mydomain.com www.mydomain.com; root /var/deploy/myapp/current/public; passenger_enabled on; location ~* \.(js|css|png|jpg|jpeg|gif|ico)$ { expires 1y; add_header Cache-Control public; } } I specify the server_name directive, but still, it answers anything which points to this IP and I could see that in the access.log that it answers to other domain names. Is there anything I am doing wrong?

  • How to allow Hudson build URL through Nginx auth_basic?

    - by rodreegez
Hi, I have Hudson running and made available to the world via nginx. I have protected Hudson with nginx's auth_basic and that works great. The trouble is, I want to allow unauthenticated requests to the build URL, i.e. /job/<job_name>/build. Currently I have this in my nginx conf: upstream hudson { server 127.0.0.1:8888; } server { server_name ci.myurl.com; root /var/lib/hudson; location / { proxy_pass http://hudson/; auth_basic "Super secret stuff"; auth_basic_user_file /var/opt/hudson/htpasswd; } location ~ \/build { auth_basic off; } } I can't get that second location to allow unauthenticated requests. I have tried various combinations of location ~ /job/(.*)/biuld { } location ^~ \/build { } location ~ \/job\/(.*)\/build { } etc... Maddening! Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Ad.

  • gallery2 and nginx with rewrite return file not found for file name with space (or + sign in url)

    - by Vangel
I have setup nginx with gallery2 on an internal server. Everything works fine under apache2 which I checked first, it used to be on apache2 Problem is: gallery2 seems to generate url with + sign in it for file names/ images which had spaces in it so a file like "may report.jpg" becomes "may+report.jpg" The URL rewrite works but gallery2 throws an error for file not found. THis does not happen under apache2. Here is my nginx rewrite rule: location / { index main.php index.html; default_type text/html; # If the file exists as a static file serve it # directly without running all # the other rewite tests on it if (-f $request_filename) { break; } } location /v/ { # if ($request_uri !~ /main.php) # { rewrite ^/v/(.*)$ /main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_path=$1 last; # } } location /d/ { if ($request_uri !~ /main.php) { rewrite ^/d/([0-9]+)-([0-9]+)/(.*)$ /main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=$1&g2_serialNumber=$2&g2_fileName=$3 last; } } location ~ \.php$ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:8889; fastcgi_index main.php; fastcgi_intercept_errors on; # to support 404s for PHP files not found fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; include fastcgi_params; fastcgi_param SERVER_NAME $host; fastcgi_read_timeout 300; } the sit on its own works fine. only the images with spaces in file name do not display in album view and also when clicking the the image for full page view will throw this error Error (ERROR_MISSING_OBJECT) : Parent 103759 path report+april+456.flv in modules/core/classes/helpers/GalleryFileSystemEntityHelper_simple.class at line 98 (GalleryCoreApi::error) in modules/core/classes/GalleryCoreApi.class at line 1853 (GalleryFileSystemEntityHelper_simple::fetchChildIdByPathComponent) in modules/core/classes/helpers/GalleryFileSystemEntityHelper_simple.class at line 53 (GalleryCoreApi::fetchChildIdByPathComponent) in modules/core/classes/GalleryCoreApi.class at line 1804 (GalleryFileSystemEntityHelper_simple::fetchItemIdByPath) in modules/rewrite/classes/RewriteSimpleHelper.class at line 45 (GalleryCoreApi::fetchItemIdByPath) in ??? at line 0 (RewriteSimpleHelper::loadItemIdFromPath) in modules/rewrite/classes/RewriteUrlGenerator.class at line 103 in modules/rewrite/classes/parsers/modrewrite/ModRewriteUrlGenerator.class at line 37 (RewriteUrlGenerator::_onLoad) in init.inc at line 147 (ModRewriteUrlGenerator::initNavigation) in main.php at line 180 in main.php at line 94 in main.php at line 83 System Information Gallery version 2.2.4 PHP version 5.3.6 fpm-fcgi Webserver nginx/0.8.55 Database mysqli 5.0.95 Toolkits ImageMagick, Thumbnail, Gd Operating system Linux CentOS-55-64-minimal 2.6.18-274.18.1.el5 #1 SMP Thu Feb 9 12:45:44 EST 2012 x86_64 Browser Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/536.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/19.0.1084.52 Safari/536.5 In the report above there is usable system information if that helps. I know the nginx is old but it comes as default in centos repo and I am not sure if upgrading will fix the problem or break something else it seems gallery2 must map the + to space internally but why it's not doing so with nginx I can't tell. EDIT: I just verified that if I change the '+' sign to %20 then gallery2 works. but gallery2 is generating URL as +. I found a (maybe) related problem here for IIS7 and Gallery2 http://forums.asp.net/t/1431951.aspx EDIT2: Accessing the URL without rewrite and having the + sign works. Must be something to do with rewrite. Here is the relevant apache2 rule that might be of help RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} /d/([0-9]+)-([0-9]+)/([^/?]+)(\?.|\ .) RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/main\.php$ RewriteRule . /main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=%1&g2_serialNumber=%2&g2_fileName=%3 [QSA,L] RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} /v/([^?]+)(\?.|\ .) • nginx: how do I track down a random 500 from nginx (not my application). Potentially has something to do with load?

    - by kaleidomedallion
We recently had some 500's from nginx itself that somehow were not logged (we have screenshots, but nothing in the logs). That is weird in itself, because usually errors show up there. Regardless, I am wondering if there is something like a connection pool size that if maxed out would result in a 500? We have correlated it potentially to a recent spike in traffic, but it is not conclusive. Anyone have any ideas of how to begin to approach such an issue?
