• Vizio costar mediatomb video loads but does not play

  I setup MediaTomb on 12.04 to stream videos using these inst The Vizio costar I am using as the player sees the server, and starts to load the MP4 video. The video however does not play, the player just exits after a few seconds. There is no mention of errors in the media tomb log. Update- I installed VLC to test the server and it works fine. Perhaps I need a different video server for the costar. I also tested the video by playing it via usb thumbdrive.

• Is there a expected set of button mappings games commonly use?

  I am making a game that will support a XBox 360 controller but I would like to try and keep the default button mappings to be what is expected from a user's past history from playing other games. Is there a set of guidelines from Microsoft on what should map to what (Do you use A for fire or left trigger?), or has the gaming community picked up a common set of controls that is just not written anywhere, everyone just "knows" it (like WASD for movement). The hardest thing for me is I have walking movement, vehicle movement, and airplane movement. I plan on allowing custom configuration of each, but I don't know what to set as the defaults.

• Ubuntu no longer prompts for root privilege (but doesn't give it either)

  So on 14.04 LTS I was playing around with some settings to solve another problem, and somehow managed to screw things up and now Ubuntu no longer asks for root privileges before trying to perform administrative actions. The catch is that my user does NOT have them by default, which means those actions ALL fail. I can still run "sudo " from terminal and it'll ask for my password and work fine, but any GUI that requires root just fails without asking anything. Any ideas what I did wrong and how to solve it? • ubuntu login speed varies

  I have a weird problem with my Ubuntu right now. My login speed is never consistent for months, sometimes it changes within weeks. What I mean is, for example, within 2 weeks, boot time is really fast and speedy but then say after that, boot time becomes noticeably slower. Usually, right after the ubuntu login sound plays, my desktop would've finished loading already but sometimes, the ubuntu login sound is already done playing and I'm still in this stage of the login -- image, exactly like that. Any reasons for this? Sometimes it slows down after updates (which I think is kind of normal?) After a few reboots, it becomes fast then randomly it becomes slow again.

• Shader effect similar to Metro 2033 gasmask

  I was thinking about effects in games the other day and I was reminded of the Gasmask effect from Metro 2033. Once you put the gasmask on it blurred a bit in the corners and could ice up and even get cracked. I assume that something like that is done using a shader. I have been experimenting a bit with game development, so far mostly playing with existing rendering engines and adding physics support etc. I would like to learn more about this sort of effect. Can someone give me a simple example of a shader that would alter the entire scene like this. Or if not a shader then an idea on how it would be done. Thanks. • Weekend reading: Microsoft/Oracle and SkyDrive based code-editor

  A couple of news item caught my eye this weekend that I think are worthy of comment. Microsoft/Oracle partnership to be announced tomorrow (24/06/2013) According to many news site Microsoft and Oracle are about to announce a partnership (Oracle set for major Microsoft, Salesforce, Netsuite partnerships) and they all seem to be assuming that it will be something to do with “the cloud”. I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment, Microsoft are heavily pushing Azure and Oracle seem (to me anyway) to be rather lagging behind in the cloud game. More specifically folks seem to be assuming that Oracle’s forthcoming 12c database release will be offered on Azure. I did a bit of reading about Oracle 12c and one of its key pillars appears to be that it supports multi-tenant topologies and multi-tenancy is a common usage scenario for databases in the cloud. I’m left wondering then, if Microsoft are willing to push a rival’s multi-tenant solution what is happening to its own cloud-based multi-tenant offering – SQL Azure Federations. We haven’t heard anything about federations for what now seems to be a long time and moreover the main Program Manager behind the technology, Cihan Biyikoglu, recently left Microsoft to join Twitter. Furthermore, a Principle Architect for SQL Server, Conor Cunningham, recently presented the opening keynote at SQLBits 11 where he talked about multi-tenant solutions on SQL Azure and not once did he mention federations. All in all I don’t have a warm fuzzy feeling about the future of SQL Azure Federations so I hope that that question gets asked at some point following the Microsoft/Oracle announcement. Text Editor on SkyDrive with coding-specific features Liveside.net got a bit of a scoop this weekend with the news (Exclusive: SkyDrive.com to get web-based text file editing features) that Microsoft’s consumer-facing file storage service is going to get a new feature – a web-based code editor. Here’s Liveside’s screenshot: I’ve long had a passing interest in online code editors, indeed back in December 2009 I wondered out loud on this blog site: I started to wonder when the development tools that we use would also become cloud-based. After all, if we’re using cloud-based services does it not make sense to have cloud-based tools that work with them? I think it does. Project Houston Since then the world has moved on. Cloud 9 IDE (https://c9.io/) have blazed a trail in the fledgling world of online code editors and I have been wondering when Microsoft were going to start playing catch-up. I had no doubt that an online code editor was in Microsoft’s future; its an obvious future direction, why would I want to have to download and install a bloated text editor (which, arguably, is exactly what Visual Studio amounts to) and have to continually update it when I can simply open a web browser and have ready access to all of my code from wherever I am. There are signs that Microsoft is already making moves in this direction, after all the URL for their new offering Team Foundation Service doesn’t mention TFS at all – my own personalised URL for Team Foundation Service is http://jamiet.visualstudio.com – using “Visual Studio” as the domain name for a service that isn’t strictly speaking part of Visual Studio leads me to think that there’s a much bigger play here and that one day http://visualstudio.com will house an online code editor. With that in mind then I find Liveside’s revelation rather intriguing, why would a code editing tool show up in Skydrive? Perhaps SkyDrive is going to get integrated more tightly into TFS, I’m very interested to see where this goes. The larger question playing on my mind though is whether an online code editor from Microsoft will support SQL Server developers. I have opined before (see The SQL developer gap) about the shoddy treatment that SQL Server developers have to experience from Microsoft and I haven’t seen any change in Microsoft’s attitude in the three and a half years since I wrote that post. I’m constantly bewildered by the lack of investment in SQL Server developer productivity compared to the riches that are lavished upon our appdev brethren. When you consider that SQL Server is Microsoft’s third biggest revenue stream it is, frankly, rather insulting. SSDT was a step in the right direction but the hushed noises I hear coming out of Microsoft of late in regard to SSDT don’t bode fantastically well for its future. So, will an online code editor from Microsoft support T-SQL development? I have to assume not given the paucity of investment on us lowly SQL Server developers over the last few years, but I live in hope! Your thoughts in the comments section please. • Upgrading to latest stable Mono

  Mono 2.8 was recently released boasting a couple of large performance improvements. It's far too late for it to make it into Maverick and I'm fairly inpatient. I don't use Mono for anything mission-critical (just playing music and sorting photos) and if it breaks everything related to Mono, I can probably either live with it or fix it. I'm aware of how much I stand to lose if I mess things up. So with that acknowledged, does anybody here know how to build Mono in a way where it could be dropped in to replace the current Mono (2.6.7)? By this I mean ideally mirroring the packages that Ubuntu uses so that if the worse does happen, I can just downgrade the packages. Or is there a PPA that does all this for me?

• Songs bought from the Ubuntu One Music store showing Unknown Album/Artist in streaming app

  I've been using Ubuntu one for several years and have purchased several albums from the Ubuntu One music store. All was well while I was playing them from Rhythmbox or Banshee. However, I recently started using the U.O. streaming android app and streaming section of the one.ubuntu.com website and most of my music appears to be untagged. What is going on? Before this question is dismissed as a duplicate, let me reiterate the crucial differences: ALL of the music in my U.O. account was bought in the Ubuntu One music store. This is NOT music that I ripped or bought elsewhere The mp3s that end up on my hard drive DO appear to be tagged correctly The issue affects the U.O. Streaming Music Android app AND the website (viewed in Chrome on my Win7 work PC) Is this some problem with the streaming service? Is there anything I can do?

• overheating when using flash

  I am having overheating issues when watching flash videos. Here is all the relevant information that I could think of. Please help. --Often when playing flash videos it operates at 95 degrees C. --Only gets that hot when on full screen (but still in the 80s otherwise) --Sometimes reaches 100 degrees and shuts down. --fan runs at around 4500 RPM when hot (not to mention I can here it speed up) --Happens under Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 (did not use Ubuntu before then) --Overheating happens on more than one site (for example youtube and Comedy Central) --My computer does not overheat otherwise. --Usually runs around 50-60 degrees C. --Maybe if compiling or doing updates can it get to 70 or 75 degree C. --Have a dual boot, and under Windows I do not have this issue. --I use firefox, but have the same issue if using Chrome --I have a Lenovo T410, currently running Ubuntu 12.10 --Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 540 @ 2.53GHz × 4 --4 GB of memory, 64 bit OS --Graphics: NVS 3100M/PCIe/SSE2 Thanks and let me know if you need more info, Ben

• P2P synchronization: can a player update fields of other players?

  I know that synchronization is a huge topic, so I have minimized the problem to this example case. Let's say, Alice and Bob are playing a P2P game, fighting against each other. If Alice hits Bob, how should I do the network component to make Bob's HP decrease? I can think of two approaches: Alice perform a Bob.HP--, then send Bob's reduced HP to Bob. Alice send a "I just hit Bob" signal to Bob. Bob checks it, and reduce its own HP, then send his new HP to everyone including Alice. I think the second approach is better because I don't think a player in a P2P game should be able to modify other players' private fields. Otherwise cheating would be too easy, right? My philosophy is that in a P2P game especially, a player's attributes and all attributes of its belonging objects should only be updated by the player himself. However, I can't prove that this is right. Could someone give me some evidence? Thanks :)

  During playing with Entity Framework I got the error: “Error while trying to run project: Unable to start program ‘'…’. The endpoint was not reachable.   By running the project in Visual Studio. Outside VS were no problems. A similar project runs fine. So I compared both project files. Indeed the first project file contains the line: <Prefer32bit>false</Prefer32bit> in some property groups. After deleting this line everything runs fine.

• cannot play VTC video file (.mov) using VLC player

  I have a training course contains .mov files which have video codec as apple graphics smc. I have googled and found out to add these options to play them link from where I got help But they are playing fine only in SMplayer. I want to configure similarly and play those files in VLC player. • Keyboard shortcuts are not working when unity plugin in ccsm is disabled?

  I am using ubuntu 11.10 with unity 2d , I dont like the unity launcher and use Docky . So , i have created a new seeion and using some tweaking and playing around i have been successful to get rid of the unity launcher and make a perfect interface that i like , but there are two problems .. Keyboard shortcuts not working I had to disable the ubuntu unity plugin in ccsm to get rid of the unity laucher..when it is enabled , i can use the keyboard shortcuts such as alt+tab etc .. But when i disable it , I am unable to use some shortcuts , I can still use some shortcuts like alt+F4 ect. When I maximise a window , it used to show two window (close , maximise , minimize )buttons and title bars So , i set the window decoration in ccsm to !maxvert from any , and it is working fine for most of the time until i try to snsp the window to a side then the title bar just disappears , leaving space between the panel and the window , I cant close this window until i use the alt+mouse to drag it out , because no buttons would be displayed ..

The moment we walked into the big entrance hall and saw all those unfamiliar faces, we had no idea that we all had such diverse personalities, and still we all had a great time together. • Is traditional JavaScript image pre-loading taboo

  I remember the good-old-days (not really) back when I was still sucking the teet of Dreamweaver to build websites and the lure of playing copypasta with fancy built-in scripts (ex, image-swap) was like black magic. I'm pretty far removed from that now days but I was adapting a small site from it's original FrontPage (::cringe::) format to a standard HTML/CSS implementation and couldn't help wondering... should I should re-implement the JavaScript image pre-loading into the current version? Or, is there a better way? I don't want to block the page from loading by requiring the user to request all the assets withing the page by using the traditional JavaScript pre-loader method. I value giving the user something to look at ASAP, and there's some potential harm to my Google mojo by doing so. Is there a cleaner solution to prevent unnecessary page-reflows during loading? Such as, setting the static width/height dimensions through a CSS style attribute on the image element.

• Which hosted ecommerce solutions allow customization?

  Following my previous question, I'm now evaluating the possibility of using a hosted platform for the ecommerce project I have to implement. Before I start "playing" with each one of them, I'd like ask if anybody knows which ones allow a good degree of customization. At the moment I'm looking at BigCommerce, but it seems that customization is limited to templates, while I need additional features which require PHP Coding. Also, I'd need to be able to import additional product data into the system, and I'd need to do this via code; I had a look at some integrations, but they gave me the impression that they all run on the rendered page via JavaScript. For example, if I want to show Facebook Reviews on a product, I'll have to add some JS that will fetch it and show it on the page. This is not optimal, as I must cater for people with JS disabled, therefore I'd need to run my own PHP code. Thanks again for all the opinions.

• What rules of etiquette should be followed at software conferences?

  Whether as an attendee, a speaker, or a vendor I wanted to know what the unspoken rules of etiquette are at software conferences. Other than the blindingly obvious ones (like don't assault the winner of the iPad raffle because you didn't win). What are some of the rules that should be followed, even if you feel they don't need to be said? i.e. what t-shirts are acceptable (like from competing technologies or conferences), playing Wii at vendor booths at Microsoft sponsored conferences, cancelling sessions due to low (one hand) attendance, showering, 'Attendees of Size' spilling over into your seat, talking and eating during sessions or keynotes, etc. Please, one rule per answer, with the summary in bold leading the answer. Post multiple answers if you have multiple rules.
