• Windows unrecoverable error wouldn't come out of Hibernate

  Out of curiosity... I was in a rush: I put my laptop into Hibernate (I don't keep a battery in it btw) Leaned it against a box in the laundry room Smooth tile floor means bottom of laptop slide out and laptop feel flat against floor, not super hard, but it wasn't carpeting so.. Next time I booted my laptop, I received this error for the first time ever: (not an exact quote) Windows experienced an unrecoverable error and cannot come out of Hibernate. Windows is restarting now After that, my laptop seemed to operate flawlessly. What do you think happened? Jared the electronics? I'm guessing an error like this would result of some sort of hard drive trauma, but fortunately, I have discovered none so far. I scheduled Error-checking for next restart.

Having Time Machine running on Leopard is like a warm, fuzzy blanket of comfort that I never got with RAID, rsync, or SyncToy on Windows. I'm not asking the community what the "best" backup software for Windows is, but instead: Is there any true Time Machine clone for Windows, one that includes as many of the following as possible: Completely transparent, "set-it-and-forget-it" backup Incremental backups (changes only) for every hour for a day, every day for a month, and every week until the backup disk is full Ability to rebuild from this backup disk in case of main drive meltdown (the backup doesn't have to be bootable; neither are Time Machine disks) Extremely easy to use UI (target user == wife). • Convert a colored PDF into a white/black

  On Debian Sid, I have a PDF with a blue background and yellow font. I've searched a lot on Super User but i haven't found anything useful for me. I have tried to convert the PDF into a grayscale one with: gs -o grayscale.pdf -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sColorConversionStrategy=Gray -sProcessColorModel=DeviceGray -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 colored.pdf The problem is that I obtain a PDF whit white fonts and dark grey background so I cannot print it. After that I tried: convert -density 96x96 gs2.pdf -density 96x96 -negate -compress zip inv.pdf I got a PDF with black fonts (and this is okay) and grey background (and this is not okay). What can I do to obtain a PDF with white background and black fonts?

• How do I install and use Windows Virtual PC in Windows 8?

  I really like the integrated Virtual Machine that Windows had built-in with Windows 7 with Windows Virtual PC. I'm looking to install that again. I'd like to be able to install multiple machines as I did before (XP, Ubuntu, Etc,.) but I can't seem to find Windows Virtual PC for Windows 8 any more. Is it still available?, and if not was there something setup in place to replace it? How do I use it? • How to Label / Tag Items in a Spreadsheet

  I'm a novice at spreadsheets, so I hope you'll forgive me if I'm asking a super obvious question. Is it possible to use tags in Excel/Google Spreadsheet? I'm creating a spreadsheet to log all the articles and books I'm reading. Say I'm reading "I, Claudius". I want to give it these tags: history, fiction, biography, disability, politics, drama. Then, if I want to display all the articles/books tagged with "politics", I can maybe search/display/pivot with that tag. Maybe preferably, the tags should all be in one cell with each word separated by a comma. If each word were in a cell of its own, it would make the table really messy, I think. I am open to other labelling solutions too. Thanks!

• Help imorting video from old Sony Digital Tape handycam

  Friend gave me their OLD handycam and a bunch of tapes asking me to put them on a DVD. The model is Sony DCR-TVR103 and it records onto Hi8 Digital tapes. It has a firewire port also. I am trying to use import function in iMovie on OS X 10.6. Every import though the video is super fast, like playing in fast forward. Ever seen anything like this? How can I import this video? • Software for formatting / web-publishing tutorial-type, technical articles

  I want to put some of my own technical writing on the web: tutorials, how-to's, conceptual articles about programming etc. I write mostly for myself yet, but think others can benefit from it so I want to put it online, and I also have plans of making everything more coherent and turning it into a book. My articles are not meant as a blog, they're just meant as a collection of tutorials and how-to's, but I think a blog-type software would probably be the most appropriate mode of formatting that kind of stuff. Right now I am using the blog feature of cite u like, which is very low tech and I really need something better. On my wish list is, among other things: code snippets in scrollable boxes syntax highlighting for source code snippets tagging articles with graphical icons according to topic, like in slashdot of course users (i.e. readers) should be able to comment on articles Also, just more options than a super-simple blog should look slick! should not look wikipedia-like Is there any software you can recommend for this purpose?

• WINEHQ - wine_gecko won't init - HTML Rendering disabled

  Hello Super Users, I'm currently trying to get a windows compiled program to work through Wine to run on Linux and MacOSX. When I run the program through wine, it prompts me to install Gecko which I do. Later on in the program, it attempts to use MSHTML to render HTML but I get these error messages on my console instead. err:mshtml:init_xpcom NS_InitXPCOM2 failed: 80004005 err:mshtml:HTMLDocument_Create Failed to init Gecko, returning CLASS_E_CLASSNOTAVAILABLE fixme:ole:CoCreateInstance no instance created for interface {00000000-0000-0000-c000-000000000046} of class {25336920-03f9-11cf-8fd0-00aa00686f13}, hres is 0x80040111 I'm using Wine 1.1.34 and a similar bug was supposedly fixed in 1.1.33 http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12578 I've been at this all afternoon, is there anything I'm missing? • Transfer nearly an entire file system to a fresh install as smoothly as possible

  I've got a friend who needs his computer working in just a few hours. His files are safe, however, he managed to corrupt his main install of Windows 7. My plan is to go in with a Linux disk, copy his C:\ do a backup drive I've got and then reinstall. Restoring many of his files will be pretty simple (such as documents and such), however, things such as applications won't transfer as easily. Is there any easy way to transfer applications such as MS Office (which he needs in the morning) or other commercial software packages without having to go through the hassle of locating the keys and reinstalling them completely? I don't think just moving them over will work just because of the fact that I'm sure much of that is stored in the registry (validation stuff and such). Anyways, quick responses would be super nice! Also, additional help would be great!

• PDF rendering of images seems to vary from viewer to viewer with blurring?

  I'm generating PDF figures in Adobe Illustrator CS5 that include embedded images. I've noticed that the images look dramatically different when I display the same PDF in Preview, Skim or Adobe Reader (I'm on OS X). See screenshots. Adobe Reader displays them "correctly" while Skim and Preview blurs the image out each in a different way. Is there a setting I can set when saving my PDF from Illustrator so that the images are displayed correctly in Skim and Preview? The PDF was generated in Illustrator and saved without any compression or downsampling. • Facebook unresponsive in Chrome, pepper flash disabled

  Facebook becomes unresponsive after a second or two when I open Chrome. This problem happens every few weeks or so, and it's incredibly annoying. I've disabled Chrome's internal pepper flash: http://imgur.com/8hlqvaX I've also tried disabling all extensions, and even tried it in incognito mode. Facebook works just fine in Firefox, but it's totally unusable in Chrome. The problem goes away eventually, but it returns every now and then and it's super annoying. • Ultra-lightweight web browser?

  Are there any good super-lightweight graphical web browsers out there? I'd like to be able to browse the web on an old PC, but the mainstream crop of browsers is just too heavy, and I don't want to resort to something like Lynx. There must be something decent out there that'll fit in 16 or 32MB of RAM comfortably. 100% standards compliance isn't necessary, but I'd like something that supports the most widely used parts of CSS and JavaScript. The goal is to get 98% of sites usable in a nice, graphical format.

• language input is changed by itself, not only by keystroke of alt+shift

  I'm using 2 and sometimes more input methods in windows I use ALT + left Shift for switching between languages. Sometimes, every once in a while, another action(s) trigger the language switch. It happens in the same application, (i.e. the input language changes for the same app without my request) or, while switching tasks with Alt-Tab, which causes language input to change in an arbitrary application's context. I realized that some of these actions could be the use of the scroll wheel button. It's super annoying How do I disable any other language switching, and stay only with alt+shift? Why does this happen? It happened to my in the past in these and more occasions: middle mouse click pressing Windows key pression Alt Tab (unknown)

• Microsoft Outlook tips and tricks for improving user experience?

  I'm one of those heavy Microsoft Outlook users, currently working on the 2007 version. God knows this tool is heavy and may impose problems. I wondered what the Super User crowd has to suggest in order to improve the usage experience. Several suggestions of my own: Always work in cached mode (Tools--Account Settings--Change--Use Cached Exchange Mode) Use Outlook's local archiving capabilities Use Outlook's RSS reader - it's simple and allows offline access to your feeds If you have e-mail subscriptions to magazines, blogs, etc. - create a subdirectory to keep them, and a rule to automatically move them there when they arrive (one rule per subscription, based on the sender e-mail.) You can also share suggestions that require configuration of Exchange Server, for those of us who can make bring them to their IT managers. What are your suggestions? PS: "Use Gmail" is not an accepted answer, some of us don't control what email system we use...

• ssh-agent is broken after running Meerkat - can connect to git in terminal but not in Tower - no keychain access

  My mac running Snow leopard 10.6.8 is having trouble handling it's ssh keys. I could previously access all my git repo's via Tower without an issue. The other day I ran Meerkat to see what it was about and it looks like it has broken the way ssh works. Terminal doesn't seem to have a problem and can still connect to Git, but it can't access the keychain. Tower doesn't seem to be able to access anything. The Tower support crew have been super helpful, but I wanted to float this here and see if anyone has any ideas on how to fix my problem. The only hints I have are: $ which ssh returns: /usr/bin/ssh and echo $SSH_AUTH_SOCK returns: /tmp/ssh-nBhRYVEg8t/agent.199 (This one seems to be wrong as I think it's supposed to point to a Listener, but no idea how to fix it) additional: Keychain first-aid finds no problems. The problem seems to be that ssh-agent is not being run properly... but that's just a guess.

• How can I take browser screenshots at a higher resolution than my browser supports?

  I need to take a screenshot of a website as it would appear on a very high resolution monitor... say 4000x3000 pixels. My laptop's screen has a native resolution of 1400x768. Basically, I need to simulate having a monitor resolution much higher than my monitor and video card actually supports. I want the screenshot of the site to look pretty much how it does when you hit CTRL MINUS (zoom out) in Firefox repeatedly, but without any loss of pixels due to scaling. How can I do this? Is there some way to use virtual machine software to simulate a super-high-res display? If not, is there some way to open a browser window bigger than the screen, and then capture its contents as a PNG somehow? Anything else that might work?

• Reliability of S.M.A.R.T.?

  I've been using ActiveSmart to monitor my hard-drives health for a few weeks now, and its telling me my brand new 1.5 TB hard-drive is half-dead already. About on-par with one of my hard-drives which I know is at least half dead because I've been having some read errors and heard ticking noises. Now I haven't actually noticed any problems with my 1.5 TB drive; should I be concerned that it's going to crap out on me too? Or could ActiveSmart be giving a mis-diagnosis because I use it a lot or something (I've used up 795 GB in the 2 and a half weeks I've had it). The events that ActiveSmart has been catching is "Hardware ECC recovered". Maybe these new fangled super big hard-drives somehow rely on ECCs to squeeze out the extra space, but this isn't actually a cause for concern?

• Mac Terminal: changed my shell, now can't start it

  I installed bash 4.0 via MacPorts, then used sudo chsh -s /opt/local/bin/bash my_user to change my shell. Before that I tried just running plain chsh without sudo, but it wouldn't allow me to change my shell to that path. Now when I try to start Terminal I'm getting a message that my shell has an illegal value, so Terminal won't start. I click Quit, and, unsurprisingly but annoyingly, it quits immediately. How do I reset my shell so I can start Terminal again? How do I set my shell to bash installed via MacPorts in a way that it'll work? Why does Terminal think my shell is illegal anyway? Is it siding with the neo-prohibitionists? Mac OS X 10.5.8. Everything super mega up-to-date.

• Cannot open an external hard drive in Windows

  In Windows 7, I was installing wubi ubuntu to an external hard drive when suddenly it disconnected from the PC. After I connected it back to PC, and double clicked the drive's icon, Windows didn't show the content of the disk but asked me whether I wanted to format it. The hard drive has only one partition. Its format is NTFS. I also connected the disk to Windows XP. It makes the Windows Explorer super slow and I cannot open the disk as well. I can open the disk on Ubuntu and Mac. Is it possible to restore the disk and make it run in Windows? Thanks

• Can admins monitor my activity locally even when I use a VPN?

  My school has one of those super overreacting web blockers (specifically Fortisnet) that blocks things that should be accessible by a high-school senior trying to research projects. Despite many students' complaints the administration's hands are tied due to parents' complaints. I have setup a VPN account from http://www.vpnreactor.com. With this I am able to bypass the blocker. I know this service hides my IP from websites and servers on the web. I also know that the school pays an IT guy just to monitor sites and network traffic that the students are using. Basically, will he be able to see my network traffic? More importantly, will he be able to trace it to my computer or its MAC address? I am connecting over Wi-Fi, not ethernet.

• Browser/addon which shows what's been downloaded so far regardless of formatting and layout ?

  Every now and then a website becomes super-slow (but not broken) because there are too many people looking at it at the same time. When I try and view such a site, say with Firefox, I can see that it is downloading all sorts of components of the site because of the progress information printed at the bottom of the window and I'm sitting there thinking "If only the browser would show me what it's got so far. I don't care if its a jumbled mess, I just want to see what you've got". Does any browser offer such an option?
