    I started learning Java recently. I started learning it using books that I picked up from the library, some that I bought, and here and there from Java documentation. The book that I use for Java was published in the year 2011. In 2012, Java8 will be released followed by Java9 in the year 2013. The questions are: How do I keep myself updated about developments in Java without having to buy a tome for Java8 and/or Java9 Is a book published in 2008 an outdated book for studying JSP and Servelets?   • Creating an Interface To a Language's Standard Library?

    In the process of learning test-driven development, I've been introduced to dependency injection and the use of interfaces, and have started using these concepts in my own PHP code in order to make it more testable. There have been times when I've needed to test code that was doing things like calling the PHP time() function. In order to make these tests predictable, it seemed logical to create an interface to the standard PHP functions I use so that I can mock them out in my tests. Is this good software design? What are the pros and cons of doing this? I've found myself groaning at how quickly my PHP interface can stick its fingers into everything I do. Is there a better way to make code that relies on PHP-accessed state and functions more testable?

  • Using git (or any version control) regarding migration from one language to another [on hold]

    I'm polishing an old project that i released some years ago, and the main purpose on that, is to arrange some folder structures and port the entire code from actionscript to haxe. All the game features, assets and design will remain the same. I have some doubts regarding versioning the project in this circumstance. Assuming that the only thing that will be drastically changed is the code migration, is it correct maintaining the new project changes on the same repository ? I was thinking in tagging it something like V1.1 or Branch the entire project. But i'm afraid that i'm gonna deviate from the versioning patterns. How can i use this version control issue in the best practice way ? Thanks.

  • How can i compare Audio, what programming language should i use

    I have 2 audio files that are from almost the same source. But at some points there shifted a bit. Also the codecs does not match. I would like to make a program that takes a sample 2 - 4 seconds. And looks for it in the other file. (Most of the time it's not shifted more than 30 seconds). Than take the time and store it, Go ahead for a few seconds take a sample and find it again. This way i want to create a file where i can see on what points the file is shifted. For people who are more interested in what i want. I have a audio/video file speech and subtitles. But i have same speech from different sources with differs a bit in time. And i like to make a program that can correct the subtitle time for me. Enough about the problem I looked on the Internet for ways to compare audio files. Based on what i read comparing 2 audio files isn't that easy as i had hoped.   • Programming Language Family Tree?

    As a man interested in programming, I must ask if there is a cataloged hierarchy of languages. I'd like to learn to actually understand what's happening- that is to say, I don't want to use a compiler until I understand what a compiler does and how to make my own. I really do want to start from total scratch. I'm told that means "machine code"? I don't know. What I do know is that "C++" is not the start. I'm not interested in learning that until I can actually break software down to its very base and see how the pieces go together.

  • UISegmentedControl is hidden under the titleBar

    I've a table view that has a custom table view cell in it. My problem is that when i try and assign a value to a variable in the custom table view cell I get the stated error. Now, I think its because the said variable is not initialised, but its got me completely stumped.   • Recommended programming language for linux server management and web ui integration

    I am interested in making an in house web ui to ease some of the management tasks I face with administrating many servers; think Canonical's Landscape. This means doing things like, applying package updates simultaneously across servers, perhaps installing a custom .deb (I use ubuntu/debian.) Reviewing server logs, executing custom scripts, viewing status information for all my servers. I hope to be able to reuse existing command line tools instead of rewriting the exact same operations in a different language myself. I really want to develop something that allows me to continue managing on the ssh level but offers the power of a web interface for easily applying the same infrastructure wide changes. They should not be mutually exclusive. What are some recommended programming languages to use for doing this kind of development and tying it into a web ui? Why do you recommend the language(s) you do? I am not an experienced programmer, but view this as an opportunity to scratch some of my own itches as well as become a better programmer. I do not care specifically if one language is harder than another, but am more interested in picking the best tools for the job from the beginning. Feel free to recommend any existing projects that already integrate management of many systems into a single cohesive web ui, except Landscape (not free,) Ebox (ebox control center not free) and webmin (I don't like it, feels clunky and does not integrate well with the "debian way" of maintaining a server, imo. Also, only manages one system.) Thanks for any ideas! Update: I am not looking to reinvent the wheel of systems management, I just want to "glue" many preexisting and excellent tools together where possible and appropriate; this is why I wonder about what languages can interact well with pre-existing command line tools, while making them manageable with a web ui.

  • How to stop windows from adding additional keyboards to languages

    I have the English language setup with the normal en-us layout, and only this layout. I have the Spanish language setup with united states - international layout. When I switch to English it gives me the option to select the regular keyboard or the international version. Only the regular version is listed under EN in my language settings. How do I get it to remove the international keyboard from English? Sometimes it switches to international while I'm on English mode and screws up my typing, which is a pain in the ass.

The qualities I want are: You should be able to develop non-trivial software in it, but it mustn't be a great language for that as: I want to learn the language so I can try out a new paradigm (that is, not because I (think) that I will have great use of it). The reason I want to learn another paradigm is that I want to broaden my views on different approaches (learn to think in new ways, different from OOP, functional and structured). The language should let me do that (learn to think differently). The language should have available and good resources to learn from. The resources should also approach stack-oriented programming in a way that you understand the paradigm (after all, I do this for the paradigm).

From my understanding, a verbose language is easy to read and understand, while a terse language is concise and neat, but more difficult to read. Should there be other things to consider in the definitions? It seems much of the popular programming languages of today are verbose, and these terms two terms are only used to describe a language as being more or less, relative to than another language. Another programmer discovers it's actually much better for some different category of problems. By virtue of this new application, the language then becomes popular for that application primarily. Are there any instances of this actually occurring? Put another way, does the intended purpose of a language have any bearing on how it's actually used, or whether it becomes popular? How can I decided a language when taking in consideration its community, rather than the popularity? Any recommendations?   • Debug an Eclipse plugin in a different language?

    I'm trying to debug an Eclipse plug-in when it is running in another language (japanese). The problem I'm encountering is: I can't get the Eclipse debugger to run another Eclipse instance in another language. I've got all my strings externalized to resource bundles ... and, when the plug-in is installed in Eclipse on a machine that has it's default language set to Japanese, it runs OK ... but there are a few problems that I need to resolve. I've tried setting the Eclipse -nl parameter to ja_JP along with '-Duser.language=ja -Duser.country=JP' on the VM arguments, but every time Eclipse is launched, everything is in English. Any suggestions on how I can get the debugger to launch the Eclipse instance in Japanese?
