  • Answer programming for "What are your interests?" interview questions?

    - by Morgan Herlocker
For interview questions that ask for personal hobbies, should you mention a bunch of tech activities you enjoy, like how "I love building java applets in my free time" or should you focus on non-programming activities to show you are well rounded? Does it show passion to say programming is a hobby, or does it sound disingenuous? I could see it going either way, so please back up your answer with some sound reasoning.

  • When not to use Google Web Toolkit?

    - by Jas
I'm considering use of GWT on a major in-house web app development project, namely it's major advantage in my eyes is the cross-compilation to Javascript which would (at least theoretically) help my team reduce the size of tech stack by one. However, having been burnt before (like most devs), I would like to hear from programmers who did actually use it on any problems with GWT which would hamper, or limit, it's use within a certain problem domain. When do you not recommend using GWT, and why?

  • Is the difference between BDD and TDD nothing more than a vocabulary shift?

    - by Desolate Planet
Hello, I recently made a start on learning BDD (Behaviour Driven Development) after watching a Google tech talk presented by David Astels. He made a very interesting case for using BDD and some of the literature I've read seem to highlight that it's easier to sell BDD to management. Admittedly, I'm a little skeptical about BDD after watching the above video. So, I'm interested to understand if BDD is indeed nothing more than a change in vocabulary or if it offers other benefits.

  • How to deal with WYSIWYG editors?

    - by Pino
There are now lots of WYSIWYG editors, however whenever we use one on a CMS-based website we consistently have issues. The biggest being users pasting content from Word or other online sources and all the various formatting rules being added in "behind the scenes". How do you deal with these editors on a live production website? I love Markdown, however its target market is most definitely the tech industry.

<b>Tech Republic:</b> "If you spend any length of time in the shell, chances are you&#8217;ve typed the same commands over and over. It&#8217;s usually not anything you can necessarily script as the commands may vary slightly on each invocation, but there are certain commands that can be used often with a little variation on each call."

  • The old "do as I say, not as I do" problem

    - by AaronBertrand
Microsoft is often considered a leader, an innovator, a trend-setter. The same could be said for Apple, Google, and a host of other tech companies. And each of those has its set of critics as well, who think that the company is the opposite - or worse. Some people think it is a good idea to model their own code, architecture or applications after things that these companies have done, but this is not always the best approach. Humans work at these companies too, and everyone is prone to mistakes,...(read more)

  • "Half of everything you know will be obsolete in 18-24 months" = ( True, or False? )

    - by blunders
Just ran across this, and wondering if anyone has a way to prove or disprove this statement: Something to keep in mind ... what's the half-life of knowledge in high tech? It tracks with Moore's Law: half of everything you know will be obsolete in 18-24 months. SOURCE: Within answer by Craig Trader to this question "What is the single most effective thing you did to improve your programming skills?"

  • SEO effects of intermix of WP blog, custom PHP site and FB app game

    - by melbournetechlover
We're a melbourne tech company in the process of building a custom site in PHP. We plan to launch a "pre-launch" page which is also custom coded (CSS3 on twitter bootstrap framework + HTML5 front end and PHP back end). On that site will be a link to a blog - the idea behind this is to build up ranking for a variety of relevant keywords prior to the full site going live (given the majority of the site is a member only community anyway so the blog is really the main way we'll be able to execute on-site SEO. Ideally, we would like to install wordpress in a subdirectory on our servers and just customise the header to look the same as the landing page of the website. But some questions and concerns... Is there any detrimental effect on SEO efforts in having two separate systems (one custom PHP, the other an installation of wordpress) to manage the blog vs the rest of the site? Are there any benefits or detriments to installing on a sub domain such as blog.sitename.com vs. sitename.com/blog. My preference would be sitename.com/blog as it feels neater - but open to suggestions based on knowledge of Google preferences. Separately, we are building a Facebook app which is under another site name. Again because we are launching this app first, from an SEO perspective, would it actually be better to run it from a sub domain on the main site - e.g. gamename.mainsitename.com instead of on app.gamename.com? Currently we have it on app.gamename.com, but if there are SEO benefits to moving it to the other domain and server then we'll do it. Basically we don't want to have our SEO efforts divided - will Google algorithms prefer two sites heavily referring traffic, or is it better to focus our efforts on one. I guess that's the crux of the issue. But the other one is - does Google care about traffic accessing a page built for the Facebook app iFrame - does that count toward rankings? Sorry I hope these questions aren't too complex - but we're in the tech world every day and still can't seem to find a good answer to these ones...hence I'm taking to the forums!! Free beer for whoever can give me a solid answer!

  • What is a good way to test demand for a new game platform?

    - by user15256
I'm working on a game platform that turns your iPhone, android or iPad into a steering wheel, for racing games (like need for speed and dirt 3) and flight simulators for example. I'd love to figure out smart ways to figure out whether gamers would like something like this. I originally asked this question over on the gaming SE and it was for getflypad.com. A lot of the tech is built and most of it is doable - the question here is how to test demand and know whether gamers actually want this.
