• OSX - User home directories shared via NFS

  Hi, I've run into some problems with how I've got user home directories set up on our system here. Our server is an XServe, using Open Directory to manage the user accounts. The majority of our workstations are OSX, but there are a few running Linux (Centos 5.3), and, as time goes on, we expect the proportion of Linux workstations to increase (at some point, we expect to move the server side over to Linux too, but for now we're running with what we've already got) To ensure that the Linux and OSX workstations both see user's home directories in the same place, I shared the home directories using NFS. On the server end, the home directories are stored in: /Volumes/data/company_users This is mounted on the workstations to: /mount/company_users This work fine on the Linux workstations, but there is some weirdness under OSX. For the user who is logged in through the GUI, it all works just fine. However, if a user tries to SSH into a machine that they are not the primary user on, they often have no access to their own home directory. It looks as though OSX is trying to do something else to the user home directories mount point when you log in through the GUI.... For example, on this machine (nv001), I (hugh) am logged into the GUI. Last login: Mon Mar 8 18:17:52 on ttys011 [nv001:~] hugh% ls -al /mount/company_users total 40 drwxrwxrwx 26 hugh wheel 840 27 Jan 19:09 . drwxr-xr-x 6 admin admin 204 19 Dec 18:36 .. drwx------+ 128 hugh staff 4308 27 Feb 23:36 hugh drwx------+ 26 matt staff 840 4 Dec 14:14 matt [nv001:~] hugh% So Matt's home directory is accessible to him. However, if I try to switch to him: [nv001:~] hugh% su - matt Password: su: no directory [nv001:~] hugh% Or: [nv001:~] hugh% su matt Password: tcsh: Permission denied tcsh: Trying to start from "/mount/company_users/matt" tcsh: Trying to start from "/" [nv001:/] matt% Does anyone have any idea why it might be doing this? It's causing me all sorts of problems at the moment... The only machine that I can successfully switch users at the moment is the server that the user directories are stored on, where /mount/company_users is actually just a symlink to /Volumes/data/company_users Thanks

• New user profile creation error - Windows cannot open *.exe

  I have a windows 7 laptop with the user "mydomain\boy" that cannot log in to the laptop. the error message is something like "User profile service cannot log in the user boy". I then logged in with the domain admin account "mydomain\admin" and then went to delete the "mydomain\boy" from my computer system properties advance system settings user profiles settings. I also ensure that the user is deleted from control panel user accounts. I then also deleted the user folder c:\users\boy I also checked that the registry at this location HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\profilelist\ and ensure that there is no entry for boy. I followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215 using the method 3 "fix it for me" but does not seem to do anything. (or i don't know how to use it). AFTER EVERYTHING DONE ABOVE... Everytime i log in with a new user, be it boy, girl or anything other domain account (other than the admin account already created when I first logged in to begin the fix/break), it takes a long time, and when the "preparing desktop" goes away, it starts to exe cannot open error e.g. regsvr.exe etc.. file association problem with exe QUESTION (phew finally..): Please tell me how to fix it? • Ubuntu, User Accounts messed up

  I need to fix Ubuntu Accounts some how but don't really see how it could be done. The problem is: files /etc/passwd and /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts where changed. /etc/passwd After John:x:1000:1000:John,,,:/home/serg:/bin/bash Befoure serg:x:1000:1000:John,,,:/home/serg:/bin/bash /etc/hosts After 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 John-The-Rippe Befoure 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 serg-Protege /etc/hostname After John-The-Ripper Befoure serg-PORTEGE-Z835 I was trying to simply changed this files but can not do this because permission denied. When I'm trying to login as a root I got this message: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ sudo -s [sudo] password for John: John is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported The file sudoers is empty: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ vi /etc/sudoers When I type users in cp: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ users John John When I type id, I got this: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ id uid=1000(John) gid=1000(serg) groups=1000(serg) This doesn't work eather: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ usermod -l John serg usermod: user 'serg' does not exist John@John-The-Ripper:~$ adduser serg adduser: Only root may add a user or group to the system. ater. Then I tried to go to the GRUB menu and from there log in as a root. I did this, but however When I tryed to create user serg, It gave me an error that group already exist. When I tried to change /etc/passwd it said 'permission denied' And this doens't do the trick: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ visudo visudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied visudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied Also The last thing I tried to do is to create a bootable USB and reinstall ubuntu, however I can not open USB-Creator because it asked me a root passwd. • Google Chrome proxy settings?

  When I try to set Google Chrome's proxy settings (on chrome://linux-proxy-config/), I get the following message: When running Google Chrome under a supported desktop environment, the system proxy settings will be used. However, either your system is not supported or there was a problem launching your system configuration. But you can still configure via the command line. Please see man google-chrome-stable for more information on flags and environment variables. I need to set proxy settings to use Chrome, but I don't want to be setting them in the command line every time I use Chrome. Is there a way to set these settings permanently? Also, is there an option in Chrome so that it doesn't use proxy for specific domains (analogous to the No proxy for setting in Firefox)?

• Managing User & Role Security with Oracle SQL Developer

  With the advent of SQL Developer v3.0, users have had access to some powerful database administration features. Version 3.1 introduced more powerful features such as an interface to Data Pump and RMAN. Today I want to talk about some very simple but frequently ran tasks that SQL Developer can assist with, like: identifying privs granted to users managing role privs assigning new roles and privs to users & roles Before getting started, you’ll need a connection to the database with the proper privileges. The common ROLE used to accomplish this is the ‘DBA‘ role. Curious as to what the DBA role is actually comprised of? Let’s find out! Open the DBA Console First make sure you’re connected to the database you want to manage security on with a privileged administrator account. Then open the View menu and select ‘DBA.’ Accessing the DBA panel ‘Create’ a Connection Click on the green ‘+’ button in the DBA panel. It will ask you to choose a previously defined SQL Developer connection. Defining a DBA connection in Oracle SQL Developer Once connected you will see a tree list of DBA features you can start interacting with. Expand the ‘Security’ Tree Node As you click on an object in the DBA panel, the ‘viewer’ will open on the right-hand-side, just like you are accustomed to seeing when clicking on a table or stored procedure. Accessing the DBA role If I’m a newly hired Oracle DBA, the first thing I might want to do is become very familiar with the DBA role. People will be asking you to grant them this role or a subset of its privileges. Once you see what the role can do, you will become VERY protective of it. My favorite 3-letter 4-letter word is ‘ANY’ and the DBA role is littered with privileges like this: ANY TABLE privs granted to DBA role So if this doesn’t freak you out, then maybe you should re-consider your career path. Or in other words, don’t be granting this role to ANYONE you don’t completely trust to take care of your database. If I’m just assigned a new database to manage, the first thing I might want to look at is just WHO has been assigned the DBA role. SQL Developer makes this easy to ascertain, just click on the ‘User Grantees’ panel. Who has the keys to your car? Making Changes to Roles and Users If you mouse-right-click on a user in the Tree, you can do individual tasks like grant a sys priv or expire an account. But, you can also use the ‘Edit User’ dialog to do a lot of work in one pass. As you click through options in these dialogs, it will build the ‘ALTER USER’ script in the SQL panel, which can then be executed or copied to the worksheet or to your .SQL file to be ran at your discretion. A Few Clicks vs a Lot of Typing These dialogs won’t make you a DBA, but if you’re pressed for time and you’re already in SQL Developer, they can sure help you make up for lost time in just a few clicks!

Andy MacMillan presented some great information on the webcast and answered quite a few of your questions in the Q&A session as well. For your reading pleasure we have captured a number of the questions and answers and they are summarized below: Question: Can you tell me what should our Portal strategy be for integrating and extending our Oracle enterprise applications? Answer: We recommend that you look at this in two steps, the first would be to ensure that you have a good understanding of our common user experience architecture. Internally our product teams at Oracle are already investing in this quite heavily today for Fusion Applications and this is driving natural convergence from a UX strategy standpoint. The second step would be to look at how best to componentize the back office applications so that the business users across your organization can take advantage of these -- don't make it just about putting a new skin on top of what you already have from an application standpoint, instead look at how best to embed the social computing capabilities as part of the solution for your business users. Question: We are currently using the BEA WebLogic Portal now, should we stay on WLP or should we be looking at moving to WebCenter or when should we move to WebCenter? Answer: Our strategy has been called "Continue & Converge", this theme means that you can continue to use WebLogic or Plumtree portals until your organization is ready to move to WebCenter and in the mean time you can continue to deploy what you need to in your organization of WLP or WCI Portals with the full support of Oracle. In addition WebCenter Services can be leveraged for social computing to complement what you are already doing today and enable your organization to take advantage of some of the latest and greatest social computing capabilities. We have migration scripts and conversion capabilities available as well as programs where Oracle can help you evaluate your options to decide how best to move forward. WebCenter provides the best of the best capabilities and will enable you to take advantage of new capabilities that may not exist in your current portal today. In the end though it's up to you as a customer as to when you want to make the transition to Oracle WebCenter Suite. Question: Can you tell me how is Oracle leveraging WebCenter internally and for its Application and Middleware product UX strategies? Answer: Internally, Oracle is leveraging WebCenter for our employees and thus far we are seeing significant updates with our users taking advantage of the business activity streams, team spaces and collaboration capabilities. From a product strategy standpoint, our product teams are taking advantage of the common user experience architecture and leveraging WebCenter to provide social and collaborative capabilities to the Oracle Applications and providing new types of composite applications with what is coming with Fusion Applications. WebCenter also provides a common user experience across all the products in the Oracle Fusion Middleware family as well. Question: Our organization is currently using SharePoint, but we are also an Oracle Applications customer, how should we be thinking about WebCenter as we move forward? Answer: Great question. Typically, we are seeing organizations using SharePoint for its core use cases of small team collaboration and file server replacement. WebCenter can connect to SharePoint as a content source to feed into WebCenter quite easily and it leverages the robust Oracle ECM product under WebCenter as well. In addition, SharePoint team sites can be connected to WebCenter utilizing our SharePoint connector. With Oracle WebCenter though, we are really targeting business users and enterprise applications, thus affecting positive change on the processes that drive the business to improve productivity across your organization. Question: Are organizations today using WebCenter as a Web platform for externally facing public websites? Answer: Yes, we are seeing a convergence around web content management and portal types of websites with customers converting them from just broadcasting content to making it a much richer personalized experience and also exposing back-office applications as well. • How to refresh Google Reader cache for a specific domain

  Brief history domain.com was associated with a blogspot. domain.com changed to an institutional site and features a small code instructing which file should be retrieved by RSS readers. <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://domain.tumblr.com/rss" /> Google Reader didn't update the RSS to the new blog. domain.com/blog retrieves the posts correctly because it was never used for that purpose in the older blog. How is it possible to force Google Reader to update the cached information? I tried using another RSS reader and it worked perfectly with the new domain. However, when I tried to follow domain.com in another Google Reader account, it still showed the posts from the older blog. It's been almost a month that the aforementioned changes were made.

  Start with definitions: Yellow: Satisfactory. You could make some further improvements to this item. I have few sites using Google AdSense to make cents (yes, cents only). On recent update of Google AdSense, a new module called Scorecard displayed on my dashboard. In item Revenue optimization Text and image ads enabled , it is marked as Yellow. But I have already enabled Text and Image ads in all my sites. Why does it still having Yellow instead of Green? Is it a bug of Google AdSense Scorecard ?

• Google De-Index many pages at once?

  On one of our websites, Google has been indexing something it wasn't supposed to. We fixed the problem so it shouldn't happen anymore, but are interested in requesting that Google de-index these pages. The problem is that there are about 10,000 pages. They all look similar to this: http://www.mysite.com/file.php?o=34995 http://www.mysite.com/file.php?o=4566 http://www.mysite.com/file.php?o=223af http://www.mysite.com/file.php?o=6ga3h http://www.mysite.com/file.php?o=sfh45a etc... All the pages are file.php with get parameters like above. Is it possible to put in a de-index request like: http://www.mysite.com/file.php* so that Google removes all 10,000 pages?

• Thoughts of Cloud Development/Google App Engine

  I use mainly PHP for web development, but recently, I started thinking about using Google App Engine. It doesn't use PHP which I am already familiar with, so there will be a steeper learning curve. Probably using Python/Django. But I think it maybe worthwhile. Some advantages I see: Focus on App/Development. No need to setup/maintain server ... no more server configs Scales automatically Pay for what you use. Free for low usage Reliable, it's Google after all Some concerns though: Does database with no joins pose a problem for those who used App Engine before? Do I have to upload to Google just to test? Will it be slow compared to testing locally? What are your thoughts and opinions? Why would you use or not use App Engine?

• Google Webmaster Tools, DNS Errors & HostPapa

  Received a message from Google Webmaster Tools: Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 40.0%. You can see more details about these errors in Webmaster Tools. Recommended action Contacted HostPapa and they deny that there is any issue with the site / server!!! Support in terms of what I can do to actually resolve this issue is non-existent!!!! The site is currently online. And I don't know much about DNS... so any advice about what I can do to resolve this problem would be much appreciated. Basically, the message from Google says that it is my webhosts fault, the message from my webhost (HostPapa) is... "Just tell google to crawl your site as there are no errors."

• Tracking click conversions with Google Analytics

  Is there anyway I can use Google Analytics to track click conversions on a link? For example, if I have a link to www.a.com , is it possible for google to track the number of times that particular link was shown on my page and then track how many times it was really clicked? The problem is that I do not show the link to www.a.com every time the page loads. I am using a random function (server side) to generate a different link everytime. I would like Google Analytics to provide me with the click conversion for each of the links I choose to show the user. Thanks, Joel

• Google Webmaster Tools Data Highlighter says "Failed to load data, please try again later"

  I seem to be unable to access the data highlighter in Google Webmaster Tools since I attempted to start a new highlight on a page. Clicking the red Start Highlighting button to open the tagger did nothing, so I refreshed. Now, the page loads without the middle content section, then a few seconds later shows the following error: Failed to load data, please try again later. I can't get any of the middle section to load, even the list of current pages/page sets that have been highlighted—this error shows. I thought it may be a Google service outage, but other sites' data highlighters work fine. It also seems coincidental that it stopped working after I attempted to start highlighting—I was able to list the existing pages and page sets fine before that, and still am able to access the service on other sites. I've tried clearing browser data and have tried Google Chrome as well—same problem. What's happened?

• Nginx and Google Appengine Reverse Proxy Security

  The scenario is that I have a Google compute node running Nginx as a reverse proxy to the google appengine. The appengine is used to service REST calls from an single page application (SPA). HTTPS is used to the Nginx front end from the Internet. Do I also need to make the traffic from the Nginx reverse proxy to the appengine secure by turning on HTTPS on the appengine? I would like to avoid the overhead of HTTPS between the proxy and the backend. My thinking was that once the traffic has arrived at Nginx encrypted, decrypted in Nginx, and then sent via the reverse proxy inside of Google's infrastructure it would be secure. Is it safe in this case to not use HTTPS?

Contents are categorized (each content belongs to one category) and tagged (1 or more tags for each article). • Google detects Malware on my website

  Recently Google has been blocking my website after detecting Malware on it. I have checked through the files and can't spot any Malware that might have been inserted anywhere and no additional files have been added from what I can see. In the diagnostics Malware section og googles webmaster tools for the site it says "Malware Google has not detected any malware on this site." Also on stopbadware.org the website is not on their clearing house. The site is melfordschoolofmotoring.co.uk. So why is google detecting malware?

• Removing date from Google SERP

  We are going through our site analysing the SEO. I find that sometimes on a google results page, some results show a date, others don't. Example (from same query): I prefer the result not to have the date in it, as 20 Oct 2009 probably has an adverse effect on the clickability of the result. Is this Google putting it in? Or the page itself? Or a combination of both (IE, if over a certain age, it includes date). The two URLs are: http://www.scirra.com/forum/perlin-noise-plugin_topic38498.html http://www.scirra.com/forum/dungeon-maze-generator_topic40611.html Any way to remove the dates? I'm thinking, if the age of the thread is 4 months don't display the date on the page, then Google might not find a date reference for it?

Reading about language related meta-tags for Google, I have placed such a meta tag on the main page of main site: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://en.aroundnails.com/" /> By this way I have tried to say Google, that my site on en.aroundnails.com is the english version of main site, not a duplicate. After a fortnight I have lost a huge part of traffic from Google, more than a half. At the beginning of September I have moved this meta-tag, but traffic remained at the same level. Hope somebody can help me to solve this issue.

• sync korganizer with google calendar

  You know that calendar that pops up when you click on the time in the panel? I like it but I tend to keep all my events in google calendar. korganizer version is 4.4.11 Is there a way that I can get my google calendar to sync with this panel-clock calendar? thanks EDIT:1 It looks like what I need to do is sync google calendar with korganizer and that should do the trick, from what I understand. EDIT:2 some answers here suggest I need this plug-in sudo apt-get install akonadi-kde-resource-googledata but they give no explanation on how to configure it once installed.
