  • PHP application variable... maybe?

    I went to a PHP job interview, I was asked to implement a piece of code to detect visitors are bots to crawl thru the website and steal content. So I implemented a few lines of code to detect if the site is being refreshed/visited too quickly/often by using a session variable to store last visit timestamp. I got told that session varaibles can be manupilated by cookies etc, so I am wondering if there is a application variable that I can use to store the timestamp information against visitor IPs eg $_SERVER[REMOTE_ADDR]? I know that I can write the data to a file but it's not very good for a high traffic website. Regards James

This does not work, it seems that the literal :v_s_time is passed to the script, instead of what I want: "2010-04-14 05:50:01 PM". To execute this manually, I could enter: @"test report script.sql" "2010-04-14 05:50:01 PM" "2010-04-14 05:57:34 PM" I found that what does work is this: define v_s_time = "2010-04-14 05:50:01 PM" --Lots of unrelated code here define v_e_time = "2010-04-14 05:57:34 PM" @"test report script.sql" "&&v_s_time" "&&v_e_time"; But it is unrealistic to hardcode the datetimes. Anyone know how to handle this? (Oracle 10g)

I am not clear of where to put single quotes or double quotes to make it work. At the end of the day, I will be using the variable for a javascript alert box.

    I was thinking about creating making AIM pluggin that checks pandora one (desktop) or pandora website periodically to see what is currently playing and update a user's status. I suppose the main question is there a clever way to access a "public" variable from some open Adobe Air process? I KNOW this sounds like some crazy security flaw, but it may also be a feature. I am pretty sure javascript can potentially handle it. Thanks!

    In C++, what is the "order of precedence" for shadowed variable names? I can't seem to find a concise answer online.   • Is it more efficient (Performance) to store the CFC in application variables OR instance the CFC on the page call?

    Hello, I'm working on a ColdFusion dynamic website. For this website, there are a lot of CFCs and a lot of functions within each CFC. Would it be more efficient to store an instance of the CFC in an application variable, then to instance each CFC separately on each page load. For each page, at most 2 separate CFCs get called. I'm also interested in how performance will be effected when requests increase (Stress). Thanks!

To clear things up, I am not trying to send raw PHP code to clientside as that would be silly and won't be evaluated as it is a server side script. I am just looking for a fast way to put everything into a variable without manually re-doing the whole page stripping out the php open and close tags and echos...etc

    I'm doing some unit testing, and some of the code is checking to see if files exist based on the relative path of the currently-executing script by using the FILE variable. I'm doing something like this: if File.directory?(File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__),'..','..','directory')) blah blah blah ... else raise "Can't find directory" end I'm trying to find a way to make it fail in the unit tests without doing anything drastic. Being able to overwrite the __ FILE __ variable would be easiest, but as far as I can tell, it's impossible. Any tips?

    I have a static library libStatic that defines a global variable like this Header file libStatic/globals.h: extern int globvar; Code file libStatic/globals.cpp: int globvar = 42; The DLL libDynamic and the executable runner are using this global variable. Furtheron, libDynamic is linked at run-time into runner (via LoadLibrary(), GetProcAddress(), and the works...) I understand this will lead to globvar being created twice, once in the heap of runner and once in the heap of libDynamic, which is of course very undesirable. Is there a good away around this? How can I ensure that libDynamic and runner are using the same globvar?

  • Can you get the previous value of a variable in Java?

    Say way have a variable (let's say String Str) and the value of Str starts of as " " then as some code is running it is set to "test" then somewhere else in the code it is changed again to say "tester". Now in the program I want to find out what the previous value of Str was. Is this possible in Java? So I am saying that the variable gets changed twice, and you want to find out what Str was before it got changed for the second time. So in the example above the latest value of Str would be "tester" but I wanted to find out what Str was before this (assuming you had no idea what it was before it was changed to tester) in this case I would want to be able to find out that Str was "test". Is it at all possible to do this in Java?

System.exit(1); } FILE_NAME = tempName; Is this indeed bad practice? Should one avoid initializing variables to dummy values that will never actually be used? (EDIT - And what about initializing a String variable to "" before a loop that will concatenate values to the String...? Or is this in a separate category? e.g. String whatever = ""; for(String str : someCollection){ whatever += str; } )

    I use the same constant in all my php files. I do not want to assign the value of this variable in all my files. So, I wanted to create one "parameters.php" file and to the assignment there. Then in all other files I include the "parameters.php" and use variables defined in the "parameters.php". It was the idea but it does not work. I also tried to make the variable global. It also does not work. Is there a way to do what I want? Or may be there some alternative approach?

    This is what I'm doing right now. var foo = function() { var x = someComplicatedComputationThatMayTakeMoreTime(); this.foo = function() { return x; }; return x; } It works but only if foo is called as a function like so foo(); But what if I want to call it as a normal variable with a value? I could modify the code to be var foo = function() { var x = someComplicatedComputationThatMayTakeMoreTime(); this.foo = x; return x; } That would allow me to only call it once as a function and after that as a regular variable. But it's still not what I want. Plus it gets complicated if it accidentally gets called as a function again, returning an error. Is this even possible in Javascript?

    Whenever you want to know something about SQL Server’s configuration, whether that’s the Instance itself or a database, you have a few options. If you want to know “dynamic” data, such as how much memory or CPU is consumed or what a particular query is doing, you should be using the Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) that you can read about here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188754.aspx  But if you’re looking for how much memory is installed on the server, the version of the Instance, the drive letters of the backups and so on, you have other choices. The first of these are system variables. You access these with a SELECT statement, and they are useful when you need a discrete value for use, say in another query or to put into a table. You can read more about those here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173823.aspx You also have a few stored procedures you can use. These often bring back a lot more data, pre-formatted for the screen. You access these with the EXECUTE syntax. It is a bit more difficult to take the data they return and get a single value or place the results in another table, but it is possible. You can read more about those here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187961.aspx Yet another option is to use a system function, which you access with a SELECT statement, which also brings back a discrete value that you can use in a test or to place in another table. But others overlap – you can use one or the other, they both come back with the same data. So, like many Microsoft products, you have multiple ways to do the same thing. And that’s OK – just research what each is used for and how it’s intended to be used, and you’ll be able to select (pun intended) the right choice.   • Squid: caching *.swf with variables

    I'd recently upgraded my Ubuntu 11.10 x64 server to 12.04. In this process Squid was updated from 2.7 to 3.1. Squid 3.1 has many different options witch broke my setup. So I completely removed squid 2.7 and 3.1 and started from scratch. Everything is now working as before except for 1 thing: caching of .swf files with ?/variables. Squid 3 sees a ? as dynamic content and does not cache it. For example, Squid 2.7 was caching the .swf file at http://ninjakiwi.com/Games/Tower-Defense/Play/Bloons-Tower-Defense-5.html and 3.1 is not. <object id="mov" name="movn" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="800" height="620"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.ninjakiwifiles.com/Games/gameswfs/btd5.swf?v=160512-2"> <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"> <param name="flashvars" value="file=http://www.ninjakiwifiles.com/Games/gameswfs/btd5-dat.swf?v=280512"> <p>Get Flash play Ninja Kiwi games.</p> </object> It is because of the "?v=160512-2" and "?v=280512" part.
