  • Should I switch to Linux for development?

    Is there any advantage to use a Linux machine to develop instead of Windows? Everyone at work tells me to switch to Linux, since I'm developing hard-core on linux anyway. I manage 40 servers, and do everything from DB to data-backend to developing web services. I don't find anything wrong with Putty. I"m just too lazy to install another OS... What do you guys think?

So I was quite surprised to learn that there was a significant amount of overlap in service references, in addition to being unable to discern which of the two was intended to be the primary service framework. Why does there seem to be a fair amount of redundancy in individual service handling between init.d and upstart? Is something else at play here that I'm missing? What is preventing upstart from completely taking over for init.d? Is there some functionality that certain daemons require which upstart does not yet have, which are preventing some services from converting? Or is it something else entirely?

  • How to connect to memcached from another machine

    I'm trying to use memcached from a different machine (which has access to my server), but I can't figure out how. on the memcached machine I can test the connection by running telnet 127.0.0.1 port And it works, but on the other machine it just keeps trying to connect telnet machine_address port Trying machine_address... I'm not sure if I should set up something else to get it working. I know the port is working and accessible because if I try to run other services on it, they works. Os is ubuntu

  • Fill a table from a RAND based formula in Excel 2010

    I am trying to do a Monte Carlo simulation using Excel, but a lot of the tutorials I have found are either for older versions of the product, or are not quite what I am after. A simple example of the kind of think I am after is: Cell A1 contains the formula to simulate (for example int(6*rand())+1 to simulate rolling a dice). I have 10 rows of "Trials". What I want is to somehow point each row at a different calculation of the formula in A1. So I would end up with something like Trial Value 1 2 2 5 3 6 4 2 5 1 6 3 7 2 8 4 9 2 10 1 I have tried playing with some of the "What-if Analysis" tools, but I am a bit lost.

  • Can't connect to FTP sites

    This started happening when I installed Windows 7. I've tried with Filezilla and with the FireFTP Firefox plugin, and I could never connect. Filezilla gave the error message "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server". I tried disabling the Windows Firewall, but no luck. Any ideas on what might be causing this? I just discovered that I can connect with web services like net2ftp, but not with FTP clients.

    Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? In an old version of what's up gold, it was a nice dashboard with different rectangular shape being red, yellow or green depending on the status of the service and could be display easily on a screen.   • How to integrate a mirror WS without client reconfiguration?

    I have a web service hosted by IIS server 1 and another web service hosted by IIS server 2. Is there a way to have the WS on server 2 automatically pick up when the WS on server 1 is unavailable, without having to reconfigure the clients (which are desktop applications in this case).   • Windows Server not installing audio drivers properly

    I am trying to install a dummy sound card on a Windows Server machine (in Amazon EC2 cloud) in order for one of my application to work. I'm trying to accomplish that with Virtual Audio Cable and REAUDIO3. Both tools managed to install a new device on my Windows XP machine, but on Windows Server, no new devices appear. Windows Audio and Plug and Play services are Started and Automatic. ANY ideas are greatly appreciated.

  • Need Help Debugging BSOD

    For the last few days I've been getting a BSOD at least once a day. Apparently the crash has been caused by ntkrpamp.exe and searching on google has revealed that the issue seems to be related to bad RAM. I have run memtest and my RAM modules have no errors on them. I'm pretty sure the issue is related to drivers, but I can't figure out which one. I'm not an expert in interpreting the output of windbg so any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Here is my analysis with WinDbg. It was too long to paste it here. One strange thing i noticed is that my Windows XP is in Spanish (SP3) and ntkrpamp.exe copyright info seems to be in portuguese. Not sure if that could be an issue, perhaps i have the wrong ntkrpamp.exe... Thanks a lot in advance

  • Faster zlib alternatives

    I wonder, if there are any faster builds of zlib around with more advanced optimizations? If it's possible to optimize it using SSE instructions or Intel C++ compiller, or some trick which were patented earlier (I know patents were a serious limitation during gzip/zlib development), have anyone bothered to implement that? I am especially interested in compression speed, which have a direct impact on high-performance web-services serving static & dynamic content.
