Mapping tables from an existing database to an object -- is Hibernate suited?

Hello! I've got some tables in an existing database and I want to map them to a Java object. Actually it's one table that contains the main information an some other tables that reference to such a table entry with a foreign key. I don't want to store objects in the database, I only want to read from it. The program should not be allowed to apply any changes to the underlying database. Currently I read from the database with 5 JDBC sql queries and set the results then on an object. I'm now looking for a less code intensive way. Another goal is the learning aspect. Is Hibernate suitable for this task, or is there another ORM framework that better fits my requirement?

How to show raw_id value of a ManyToMany relation in the Django admin?

Hello, I have an app using raw_id on both ForeignKeyField and ManyToManyField. The admin displays the value of the foreign key on the right of the edit box. Unfortunatey, it doesn't work with ManyToMany. I've checked the code and I think that it is the normal behavior. However I would like to know if someone has an easy tip to change this behavior? Thanks in advance Update: I've tried to subclass the ManyToManyRawIdWidget but I don't know how to say that the raw_id_fields should use my custom widget. formfield_overrides doesn't seem to work with raw_id fields

I have a Django application with users. I have a model called "Course" with a foreign key called "teacher" to the default User model that Django provides: class Course(models.Model): ... teacher = models.ForeignKey(User, related_name='courses_taught') When I create a model form to edit information for individual courses, the possible users for the teacher field appear in this long select menu of user names. These users are ordered by ID, which is of meager use to me. How can I order these users by their last names? change the string representation of the User class to be "Firstname Lastname (username)" instead of "username"?

Hi, I have an Organisation entity and a Region entity. An object of type Organisation can have one or more Region objects connected to it, thus I have a foreign key in my Region entity to the Organisation Entity. The Organisation and Region objects are pulled from my database using WCF RIA and entity framework. I want to put the Organisation objects in one ComboBox and the Region objects in another ComboBox, and when selecting an organsation having the ComboBox for Region objects automatically only showing regions that are connected to the selected organisation. Should be pretty basic, but the way I've designed it right now it doesnt work at all. So, any hint to how I can achive this? A simple simple codeexample is much appreciated! (I'm using SL4,WCF RIA MVVM)

Hi, I am working with a generic data structure, say MyGeneric<Type>. There is a case where I have to iterate over all the values it holds The code I am trying to do. for ( all the keys in myGeneric ) { // do lot of stuff here } Now the generic can hold base type as double and string and it can hold some user-defined type also. There is a particular situation where I have to some specific work depending upon the type of the generic. so the final code block looks something like this for( all the keys in myGeneric ) { if key is type foo then //do foo foo else if key is of type bar //do bar bar } Now, as complexity sensitive as I am I do not like to have an if condition in the for loop. So the next solution I did was if myGeneric is of type foo call fooIterator(myGeneric) if myGenric is of type bar call barItetrator(myGeneric) function FooIterator() { // ..... // foo work //...... } function BarItetrator() { // ..... // bar work //...... } Then again when somebody sees my code then I am quite sure that they will shout where is the "refactoring". Suppose I have a value for which I have a default, which can be overridden if System.getProperty("foo") is set. I have one module for which I have bindConstant().annotatedWith(Names.named("Default foo")).to(defaultValue); I'm wondering what the best way of implementing a module for which I want to bind something annotated with "foo" to System.getProperty("foo"), or, if it does not exist, the "Default foo" binding. Sorry since this question is specific to my problem. While learning reflections i did a mini SQL ORM in a week then minor tweaks while using it for another week. Since it has very little work put into it, its really only compatibility with sqlite. I havent had problems with the code so far but i would like to port it to something that supports TSQL or MySql. The example code is here which is outdated but has the most used functions in my class. What library can i port that code over too with the smallest about of pain. Note that it must support foreign keys.

I want to prevent ASP.NET GridView from reacting to the enter button

I have an ASP.NET page with a gridview control on it with a CommandButton column with delete and select commands active. Pressing the enter key causes the first command button in the gridview to fire, which deletes a row. I don't want this to happen. Can I change the gridview control in a way that it does not react anymore to pressing the enter key? There is a textbox and button on the screen as well. They don't need to be responsive to hitting enter, but you must be able to fill in the textbox. Currently we popup a confirmation dialog to prevent accidental deletes, but we need something better than this. MySQL left outer join is slow

I've added indexes on dates.date, visits.start, visits.account_id and visits.start+visits.account_id and can't get it to run any faster. Send string from java (or other platform) to application

I want to send a barcode, read with my cellphone, to my computer. My computer has a simple server running, which listens to barcodes. When a barcode arrives, the server app should be able to input the value of the received barcode into the active application (I don't really care which application is going to get the input, the user should be able to select gedit, a terminal window or the browser if they choose to). My language at the moment is Java on GNU/Linux (Ubuntu), so I know about the Robot class. But the Robot class emulates a keyboard, which means: when you send VK_1 on a US keyboard layout, the output is '1' indeed, but when you send VK_1 on another layout (like belgian, which I use), which requires shift for the '1' key, the output is '&' (this is the character on the '1' key, when you don't hold shift). I also found xsendkeys, but this application too requires you to specify whether you need to hold shift. So it will be able to send an 'a' but for an 'A' (thus capital) you need to specify you want to hold shift with your 'a'. Isn't there an easy way to do this, for GNU/Linux and Windows, just using strings. I want to be able to send "12a68dd" to the active application. And I also would like to be able to send UTF-8 characters to the active application. I have been looking for a solution, but most require the breakdown in multiple keystrokes, which are often dependent on the keyboard layout.

Can this line of code really throw an IndexOutOfRange exception?

I am getting an IndexOutOfRange exception on the following line of code: var searchLastCriteria = (SearchCriteria)Session.GetSafely(WebConstants.KeyNames.SEARCH_LAST_CRITERIA); I'll explain the above here: SearchCriteria is an Enum with only two values Session is the HttpSessionState GetSafely is an extension method that looks like this: public static object GetSafely(this HttpSessionState source, string key) { try { return source[key]; } catch (Exception exc) { log.Info(exc); return null; } } WebConstants.KeyNames.SEARCH_LAST_CRITERIA is simply a constant I've tried everything to replicate this error, but I cannot reproduce it. I am beginning to think the stack trace is wrong. I thought perhaps the exception was actually coming from the GetSafely call, but it is swallowing the exceptions, so that can't be the case, and even if it was, it should show up in the stack trace. Is there anything in the line of code above that could possible throw an IndexOutOfRange exception? I know the line will throw an NullReferenceException if GetSafely returns null, and it will also throw an InvalidCastException if it returns anything that cannot be cast to SearchCriteria, but an IndexOutOfRange exception? There is a typical situation being faced where different tables are scattered through different schemas in Oracle database and they are related to each other (encompassing all different types of relations). How can they be represented in Hibernate using annotations as when a sessionfactory handle is created for one schema, tables in that schema can't access other related tables (foreign key relation to tables in other schema)? For a query like following, exception is thrown - "from table1 as model where model.table2Name.table2column = "+foo Exception comes as - org.hibernate.QueryException: could not resolve property: table2column of: com.test.table1 [from com.test.table1 as model where model.table2Name.table2column = 1] Here table1 and table2 are present in different schemas.

How do I delete in Django? (mysql transactions)

If you are familiar with Django, you know that they have a Authentication system with User model. Of course, I have many other tables that have a Foreign Key to this User model. If I want to delete this user, how do I architect a script (or through mysql itself) to delete every table that is related to this user? My only worry is that I can do this manually...but if I add a table , but I forget to add that table to my DELETE operation...then I have a row that links to a deleted, non-existing User.

Hi all, I am planning on doing a database deployment script for sql server 2005. Currently we have a tool that will run all of the tables, foreign keys, indexes and then data, each of which is located in a separate file with a certain extension (eg. tab, .kci, .fky) and the tool just runs *.tab, *.kci, *.fky into the db etc. Could I possibly combine all of thse into one file and have them run ignoring referential integrity until they are all complete, I would turn it on before we started inserting test data. It is just unmanageable having to maintain 4 or 5 different types of scripts for one table. Are there any issues I should be aware of? Cheers

saveall not saving associated data

I'm having a problem trying to save (update) some associated data. I've read about a million google returns, but nothing seems to be the solution. I'm at my wit's end and hope some kind soul here can help. I'm using 1.3.0-RC4, my database is in InnoDB. Course has many course_tees CourseTee belongs to course My controller function is pretty simple (I've made it as simple as possible): if(!empty($this-data)) $this-Course-saveAll($this-data); I've tried a lot of different variations of that $this-data['Course'], save($this-data), etc without luck. It saves the Course info, but not the CourseTee stuff. I don't get an error message. Suitable data structures for saving files in localStorage (HTML5) ?

It is nice when there isn't a DB to maintain and users to authenticate. My professor has asked me to convert a recent research project of his that uses Bespin and calculates errors made by users in a code editor as part of his research. The goal is to convert from MySQL to using HTML5 localStorage completely. Doesn't seem so hard to do, even though digging in his code might take some time. Question: I need to store files and state (last placement of cursor and active file). I have already done so by implementing the recommendations in another stackoverflow thread. But would like your input considering how to structure the content to use. My current solution Hashmap like solution with javascript objects: files = {}; // later, saving files[fileName] = data; And then storing in localStorage using some recommendations localStorage.setObject("files", files); // Note that setObject(key, data) does not exist but is added // using Storage.prototype.setObject = function() {... Currently I'm also considering using some type of numeric id. So that names can be changed without any hassle renaming the key in the hashmap. What is your opinion on the way it is solved and would you do it any differently?

Hello, I was going through the source of google guice, and found an unfamiliar piece of code. It would be great learning if someone can clarify it. I have very basic understanding of inner classes, as they keep the implementation details close to the public interface. Otherwise the inner class may pollute the namespace. Now, I see the below lines at public static final Scope SINGLETON = new Scope() { public <T> Provider<T> scope(final Key<T> key, final Provider<T> creator) { return new Provider<T>() { ......... } It assign an inner class instance to the static variable, but Scope is an interface defined as (at) public interface Scope Is it possible to instantiate the interface?? or is it a succinct syntax for an anonymous implementation of an interface?? If anyone can explain what the author is intended by multiple nested classes above (Scope and Provider), and why it make sense to implement this way, it would help me to understand. thanks.
