• What resources are there for creating a dedicated NES emulator box?

  Where do I start, and what communities should I get involved in, in order to achieve the following? Ideally, I'd like to have a box that does the following (doesn't have to do this out of the box, I'm just looking to be able to achieve these goals through configs and necessary dependencies): Either bypasses login, or auto login Auto-start FCEUX with options that will (a) automatically start a ROM of my choosing, and (b) go into full-screen mode. You can assume that before I get that far, I've already configured the input devices and video options. I'd like to create (or install, if it exists) a full-screen app that takes a list of ROMs, allows me to select one with a gamepad/arcade stick, and press a button to open that game Be able to map a button on a gamepad/arcade stick to the "Power off" or exit function of the emulator, such that it will take me back to the ROM selection screen. I've already successfully installed FCEUX and tested it with an arcade stick I own, so I'm not looking for an emulator installer guide. I don't know if the ROM selector app exists already, but I'm a Java developer, and could probably create one (so long as it's not too difficult to support controllers - I was thinking of using Slick2D for this - a gaming library that I'm already pretty familiar with). The goal would be a dedicated box that I have connected to my TV. I power it on. It boots up and starts the ROM selection app, which passes the proper parameters to FCEUX (or another emulator that I might switch to at a later time), and I'm ready to go. Basically an NES emulator as a real, living room console. Also, as far as mapping a controller button to functions in the app, well, I've also played around with hardware, and it would be pretty trivial for me to modify a gamepad to trigger key presses. I just don't want to go to that length if it's not necessary.

• Designing Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). I've been able to create [console] applications in C# that work pretty well, and they're usually structured something like this: static void Main() { // Load parameters from app.config. // Get documents from queue. var files = someInterface.GetFiles(someFilterOrRegexPattern); foreach (var file in files) { // Extract metadata from the file. // Validate some attributes of the file; add any validation errors to an in-memory // structure (e.g. List<ValidationErrors>). if (isValid) { // Upload using some wrapper for an ORM an someInterface.Upload(meta.Param1, meta.Param2, ...); } else { // Bounce the file } } // Report any validation errors (via message bus or SMTP or some such). } And that's pretty much it. Most of the time I wrap all these operations in a "Worker" class that takes the needed interfaces as constructor parameters. This approach has worked reasonably well, but I just get this feeling in my gut that there's something awful about it and would love some feedback. Is writing an ETL process as a C# Console app a bad idea? I'm also wondering if there are some design patterns that would be useful in this scenario that I'm clearly overlooking. Thanks in advance!

• Connection timed out exception, why?

  I am developing an application which uses embedded tomcat server 7, and deploys a web application on embedded server. My application accesses the embedded webapp through Rest APIs, but my clients are getting Connection Timed Out exceptions and port is also not blocked. I never gets this exception when I install this application on my local machine. Some points: IP address is used in the host name part (They are able to access this IP address on other port) Port is not blocked We are using Apache HttpClient library to access the URL Timeout interval seems not to be an issue. What are the possible reasons for this exception Connection Timed Out? or How can I simulate this problem on my local machine? Any pointers would be helpful.

  Asp.net ha sido una de las tecnologías creadas por Microsoft de mas rápido crecimiento por la facilidad para los desarrolladores de crear sitios web. Una de las partes de mayor importancia que tiene asp.net es el contar con el Membership Provider o proveedor de Membrecía, que permite la creación, manejo y mantenimiento de un sistema completo de control y autenticación de usuarios. Para dar inicio a la serie de post que escribiré sobre que es Membeship y cuáles son las funcionalidades principales daremos unas definiciones. Tal como se menciono anteriormente con el membership provider podemos crear un sistema de control de usuarios completos, entre las funcionalidades principales podemos encontrar: * Creación de usuarios * Almacenamiento de información en base de datos * Autenticación, bloqueos y seguimiento Otras de las ventajas que cabe resaltar, es que, algunos de los controles de asp.net ya traen "naturalmente" en sus funciones la implementación del membership provider, tal como el control "Login" o los controles de estado de usuario, lo cual nos permite que con solo arrastrarlos al diseñador estén funcionando. Membership provider es poderoso, pero su funcionalidad y seguridad se ven aumentadas cuando se integra con otros proveedores de asp.net como lo son RoleProvider y Profile Provider (estos los discutiremos en otros post). En la siguiente figura, podemos ver como se distribuyen algunoS provider creados por Microsoft Antes de iniciar con la implementación de membership debes conocer cosas básicas como el espacio de nombres al que pertenece, el cual es: System.Web.Security que se encuentra dentro del ensamblado System.Web. Algo que debe tomarse en cuenta, es que, para poder utilizar cualquiera de los miembros de la clase, debemos hacer la referencia respectiva. Por defecto, el membership provider está diseñado para trabajar directamente con SQL Server, de ahí que su nombre completo seria SQL Membership Provider. Sin embargo, debido a su gran flexibilidad podemos extenderlo a cualquier base de datos o bien modificarlo para adapatarlo a nuestras necesidades. • Winamp question: I want to search through my songs by which playlists they're sorted into

  I'm trying to think of a way to do this. I sort my songs into a variety of playlists corresponding to different 'moods' I might have, but some songs fit for more than one kind of mood (e.g. a techno song might be 'stylish' and 'surreal', or something to that effect). I also give them different star ratings for a general sort of opinion about them. I want to be able to filter my media library by moods I want or don't want, as well as by star rating. Anyone have a good way to do something like this? Alternatively, is there a way to 'tag' my songs by mood and then search up by those tags? because then I could just dump the queried results into playlists as needed. Thanks in advance.

• How do I draw a single Triangle with XNA and fill it with a Texture?

• Rhythmbox - put a playlist on my iPod

  I have an old iPod nano and currently use iTunes in Windows to management. However, I'm trying to switch to Ubuntu. So far, iPod management is one major holdup. Besides being unable to easily manage podcasts, I also don't see a way to create a playlist and put it on my iPod. I can create a playlist on the computer in Rhythmbox, but I can't drag and drop it onto the iPod. I can create a playlist on the iPod itself, put I can't drag and drop songs from my library into it. If I right-click the songs, I can add them to playlists on the computer, but not on the iPod. How can I create a playlist of music in Rhythmbox and sync it to my iPod?

  I have been googeling for days! I have a cert from rapidssl. I read up that the problem with num=20, is that indicates it doesn't know the issuer, or doesn't know the ROOT Cert, right? I run this command: openssl s_client -showcerts -connect smtp.server.com:465 I get this error: verify error:num=19:self signed certificate in certificate chain Here is what i have in my postfix main.cf, and what i have done: smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtp.server.com.rsa.key (this is the private key) smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtp.server.com.PUBLIC.key (this is the public key given to me by rapidssl) smtpd_tls_CAfile = /etc/postfix/ssl/combo.csr.key This key has both the intermediate keys ON TOP, and the ROOT KEY on the bottom. So here it is again, reformulated. On the lxml site they suggest that it is possible to have both lxml2 and the newest version of lxml on ubuntu: Using lxml with python-libxml2 If you want to use lxml together with the official libxml2 Python bindings (maybe because one of your dependencies uses it), you must build lxml statically. Otherwise, the two packages will interfere in places where the libxml2 library requires global configuration, which can have any kind of effect from disappearing functionality to crashes in either of the two. To get a static build, either pass the --static-deps option to the setup.py script, or run pip with the STATIC_DEPS or STATICBUILD environment variable set to true, i.e. STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml The STATICBUILD environment variable is handled equivalently to the STATIC_DEPS variable, but is used by some other extension packages, too. I am generally confused about how pip packages and ubuntu packages get along, so I hesitate to run STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml. Will it damage/confuse my installed lxml2 package? The suggestion on SO was to install the new lxml in a virtualenv. That looks like the best way to go, but the lxml site is suggesting that a dual installation will work also. In general: what happens if I use pip (to get a newer install) for a package that is already installed by apt-get?

• Java Applet or Unity3D for Cross-Platform 3D Surveying App

  Do you think a Java Applet or Unity3D Application is the best option to make a cross-browser 3d web-app? I intend to make a web application that displays 3d environments that can be navigated by dragging(with a finger or mouse depending on the platform). The web app will render 3d environments of development sites including contours, water pipeline locations, buildings etc. The application must work on Windows Desktop, Android, iOS and Windows Phone. So this is why I am tending towards a web-app as opposed to cross-platform smart phone library(like Mosync or Marmalade). The 3d environments will be navigable(by dragging around) and contain simple(not detailed) 3d objects like buildings, mountains, pipelines, etc. One thing I know is that WebGL is out because it doesn't work on IE and has limited support on Smart Phones(am I correct to completely disregard WebGL?). Will future Smart Phone browsers continue to support Java Applets? Also is it really true I can write ONE Application/Game in Unity3D and simply compile it to run on Windows Windows, Mac, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, iPad, iPhone and Android? Would you suggest the Unity3D application path or the Unity3D Web Player path? Concerning Unity3D, there's one thing I am unsure about: do all Unity3D features work on iOS and Android?

My sqlserver is running on port:1433 I am using port forwarding , I can access service of other ports, My Connetion String Is: Data Source=190.190.200.100,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;User ID=myUsername;Password=myPassword; But it gives following error when i am trying to connect sql server through internet: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)

• Turn-based JRPG battle system architecture resources

  The past months I've been busy programming a 2D JRPG (Japanese-style RPG) in C++ using the SDL library. The exploration mode is more or less done. Now I'm tackling the battle mode. I have been unable to find any resources about how a classic turn-based JRPG battle system is structured. All I find are discussions about damage formula. I've tried googling, searching gamedev.net's message board, and crawling through C++-related questions here on Stack Exchange. I've also tried reading source code of existing open source RPGs, but without a guide of some sort it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I'm not looking for a set of rules like D&D or anything similar. I'm talking purely about code and object structure design. A battle system asks the player for input using menus. Next the battle turn is executed as the heroes and the enemies execute their actions. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

At the moment the DLR supports languages such as Iron Ruby and Iron Python, together with dynamic extensions for C# and VB.NET. Where DLR will also score is the ability to write your own Dot Net language for specialist areas. So how does this book fare in introducing the DLR? It is a book that will require careful study and perhaps reading several times before fully understanding the subject. You will need to spend time trying out the sample code. So who would I recommend this book to? I recommend it to C# development teams for their library. I recommend it to individuals who not only know C# but have a good history of learning other computer languages. It is not a book that can just be "dipped into", but will require one or more reads from start to finish. This is no reflection on the skill of the author but of the newness of the material.

• Code &amp; Slides &ndash; SDE &ndash; What&rsquo;s new in Silverlight 4

  Last Tuesday the Software Developers Network – SDN organized another SDE. I’ve had the opportunity to present a session about Silverlight 4. I talked about lots of new features in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4, focused on the Out-Of-Browser features.     The slides of my presentation can be downloaded here.   In my presentation I demonstrated a couple of features from my new pet project “SilverAmp”. This project is based on the legendary WinAmp, but made entirely in Silverlight. I use it to try out many new Silverlight 4 features. It’s not finished yet, but useful already. It runs outside the browser with elevated trust. It reads your local MyMusic folder and uses the TagLib library to read the ID3 tags of the mp3s it finds. SilverAmp is using MEF for extensibility. It uses a custom Window Chrome, designed in Expression Design. And it shows a notification window when a new song starts to play.   In the future it is going to get song information from Last.FM, will be able to show YouTube videos inside itself and it will tweet about what you are playing. My presentation "SQL: The Best Development Language for Big Data?" is available for download from the OOW Content Catalog, see here: https://oracleus.activeevents.com/2013/connect/sessionDetail.ww?SESSION_ID=9101 For the hands-on lab ("Pattern Matching at the Speed of Thought with Oracle Database 12c") we used the Oracle-By-Example content. The OOW hands-on lab uses Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1) and uses the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause to perform some basic pattern matching examples in SQL. This lab is broken down into four main steps: Logically partition and order the data that is used in the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause with its PARTITION BY and ORDER BY clauses. Define patterns of rows to seek using the PATTERN clause of the MATCH_RECOGNIZE clause. These patterns use regular expressions syntax, a powerful and expressive feature, applied to the pattern variables you define. Specify the logical conditions required to map a row to a row pattern variable in the DEFINE clause. Define measures, which are expressions usable in the MEASURES clause of the SQL query. • Cannot mount USB drive -- FSTAB error

  Recently, one of my desktops seems to have developed a problem with the fstab and mounting USB drives. The specific error I receive is... Unable to mount TRAVELDRIVE Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root.
