• What Windows licenses are required to run additional terminal service sessions

  We need to build out a server running Windows 2008 R2 Standard that can allow up to 10 simultaneous RDP/Terminal Services connections and I'm a little confused about how the CAL licenses work. From one source I was told I needed 10 "server CALs" and an additional 10 "RDP CALs" (total of 20 CALs). From another, I was told I just needed the 10 "RDP CALs", which implicitly came with the server CAL. The Microsoft licensing website (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-rds.aspx) seems to support scenario #1, but it is still not real clear what those server CALs are needed for. Also, can we use the 2 "built-in" RDP clients, meaning we only need to purchase 8 CALs to reach a total of 10?

• How do I disable the calendar events section in GNOME Shell's clock applet?

  I'm running gnome-shell 3.2.0 and when I click the clock applet in the middle of the top panel, the following shows up: I have no need for the entire right part, right of the dotted line, which is dedicated to the "Online Accounts" integration with evolution's calendar. Is there a way to remove/disable it, so I can just have the date part of the calendar applet (left of the dotted vertical line)? I just like to browse the dates to see how many days are left in the month and stuff like that. I use Google's web interface for my "Calendaring".

• SQL Server 2008 - Error starting service - model.mdf not found?!

  my SQL server 2008 was running fine. About an hour ago, it suddenly stopped - the MSSQLSERVER service had stopped I right clicked, clicked start, and it said the service had started, and stopped I looked in the event log and saw these two errors: 17207 : udopen: Operating system error 3(error not found) during the creation/opening of physical device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf. 17204 : FCB::Open failed: Could not open device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf for virtual device number (VDN) 1. The model.mdf db has NEVER been in that location - i specified drive F: to use for data / log during install. I checked the SQL Configuration Manager, to try and set startup params, but SQL Server is not listed as one of the services..... EDIT: I've now moved the db to where it was looking for: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\ directory. Now if I start the service, it still does not work - i get this error message in the log: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 3, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes. Interestingly, i checked the error log - around the time users reported problems, there is this: 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 Configuration option 'show advanced options' changed from 0 to 1. • Any good web frameworks for asynchronous multiplayer games?

  I'm trying to craft a site for web-based (original) board games, and my client (currently written in Actionscript, but that's highly fungible) works fine - I can play solitaire games in the client - but it has nothing to connect to. What I'm looking for is a server framework for handling accounts/authentication and game tracking: something that would let players log in, show them a list of their current games, let them invite friends to new games, let them make moves in the games they have open, etc. I'm flexible on language; obviously I'm going to have to write a lot of server code to handle the actual game logic, but that should be straightforward enough. I'm more concerned with how to handle the user (and game) DBs, though suggestions for a good server framework for communicating with the DBs (and serving up, most likely, JSON for client communications) are also welcome. Right now my leaning is towards Ruby (probably with Rails) but as far as I can determine it would be a pretty good chunk of effort to set up the necessary databases, so having something even higher-level would be really useful to me.

• Internet Explorer 9 is coming Monday to a web near you

  Internet Explorer 9 is finally here...well almost.  Microsoft is releasing their new browser on March 14, 2011. IE9 has a number of improvements, including: Faster, Faster, Faster.  Did I mention it is faster?   With the new browsers coming out from Mozilla, Google, and Microsoft, there have been a flood of speed test coverage.  Chrome has long held the javascript speed crown.  But according to Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over at ZDNET..."for the moment at least IE9 is actually the fastest browser I’ve tested to date."  He came to this revelation after figuring out that the 32-bit version of IE9 has the new Chakra JIT (the 64-bit version doesn't).  It also has a DirectX-based rendering engine so it can do cool tricks once reserved for desktop applications. Windows 7 Desktop Integration.  Read my post for more details.  Unfortantely, they didn't integrate my ideas...at least not yet :) Hot new UI.  Ok, they "borrowed" some ideas from Chrome...but that is the best form of flattery. Standards Compliance.  A real focus on HTML5 and CSS3.  Definite goodness for developers. So, go get yourself some IE9 on Monday and enjoy!

• Possible automated Bing Ads fraud?

  I run a website that generates life insurance leads. The site is very simple a) there is a form for capturing the user's details, life insurance requirements etc b) A quote comparison feature We drive traffic to our site using conventional Google Adwords and Bing Ads campaigns. Since the 6th January we have received 30-40 dodgy leads which have the following in common: All created between 2 and 8 AM Phone number always in the format "123 1234 1234' Name, Date Of Birth, Policy details, Address all seem valid and are unique across the leads Email addresses from "disposable" email accounts including dodgit.com, mailinator.com, trashymail.com, pookmail.com Some leads come from the customer form, some via the quote comparison feature All come from different IP addresses We get the keyword information passed through from the URLs All look to be coming from Bing Ads All come from Internet Explorer v7 and v8 The consistency of the data and the random IP addresses seem to suggest an automated approach but I'm not sure of the intent. We can handle identifying these leads within our database but is there anyway of stopping this at the Ad level i.e. before the click through.

  Hi, I have a phone landline connection and I DO NOT have a phone instrument. I connect the cable into my laptop, and want to make calls using my laptop. I have an HDA CX20561 modem. I seem to be able to dial number using dialer.exe, though nothing seems to happen. From Microsoft kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958143, it looks like dialer.exe alone is not enough for the call. Can somebody tell me how to make and receive phone call with whatever hardware I have, i.e. what software will I need. Thanks.

  I use ubuntu server 10.04 on a fairly good machine, with 2.40 duel-core processor and 2GB RAM. My users login with ssh or samba. I have setup LDAP with PAM to sync user accounts between unix and samba. When I allowed about 90 users to login over ssh at once the server refused login for many users. I am using dropbear as ssh server. Even samba logins failed for many users. I need to allow at least 100 users to login at once. Is there anyway to do this?

  It's a bit subjective but helpful and on-topic IMO, mayebe should be made community wiki I've been in contact with some guest bloggers lately which are interested in publishing posts on my website's blog, so far I've done a regular weekly blog and had a guy marketing it, but he's too busy to do more work right now. Now I need someone to market these blog posts on social media, the last guy I just got by recommendation from a friend, but now I need to find one myself. What criteria should I check when it comes to social media marketers? Do the number of followers and fans on their accounts and/or the number of votes they get for articles they market mean anything, or is impossible to know if it's spam? That's about the only criterion I could think of so far... Thanx to anyone who helps

I am more interested in any accounts related to languages that are used commonly today, but I would like to hear about any cases in general. • "Turn Windows Features on or off" when installing .NET 3.5 SP1?

  I am trying to install a program on my Win7 machine and it says that I need to have .NET 2.0 or later installed. Since Win7 comes with .NET pre-installed, I called support and they told me to just re-install .NET since my .NET install is probably corrupted. The program I am trying to install is SNGWiz (http://www.sngwiz.com/). I do not think its installer is borked. However, when I install .NET 3.5 SP1 using the download from the Microsoft .NET web site, I get the following error: "You must use 'Turn Windows features on or off' in the Control Panel to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1." I have gone to the Windows Features on/off panel and have turned 3.5 both on and off and have tried to re-install .NET 3.5 SP1 under both situations. But it has failed with the same error. What to do?

• Are you ready to take a walk in the clouds?

  Cloud computing is here, whether we want it or not.  When I say "a walk in the clouds” I am not talking about a pleasant romantic comedy, but a real alternative to hosting applications on-premise.  For years we have had the power to host our web sites on remote systems.  Sure, challenges existed.  Mostly web sites.  I could, with a few clicks, create a account at a myriad of web host sites, put my site in the hands of a remote hosting company, and boom, I was a site on the internet.  But choices, power, and management was limited. Now, we have a set of services to let us approach and power and control we love, but with scalability of the data center.  My personal web site is hosted on a laptop running hyperV in my basement.  I have to manage the machine, patch it, make sure it is powered up.  This is fine for the “hello, this is my dog skippy site” that I maintain. If the football pool I run has an issue, one of the 10 users I have calls or emails me and I go check it out.  All is well. But this falls well below the needs of even the simplest of enterprises.  A business needs a stronger datacenter, a better pipe to the world.  Do I really want to base my business on a dynamic dns and a dsl line from the local phone company? Cloud computing gives us most of what I value (control, a db of my own, updating my site from Visual Studio). • I don't have permission to access other drives

  After messing with the user accounts & names, I found I can't access my external drives without using sudo. So when I access one normally with cd "/media/john/FreeAgent Drive" I receive bash: cd: /media/john/FreeAgent Drive: Permission denied However, using sudo: sudo cd /media/john sudo ls -l It gives: drwx------ 1 john john 20480 Sep 24 10:45 FreeAgent Drive/ And id returns uid=1003(john) gid=1003(john) groups=1003(john), ... So I'm interpreting this is as "you are john, only john can access this drive, however, you cannot access this drive." I have tried sudo chown john:john "FreeAgent Drive" and sudo chmod o+rw "john/FreeAgent Drive"but I still can't access it.

• Sound works for only one user at a time

  I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

• How do you troubleshoot Family Safety reports

  I have set up Microsoft Family Safety in Windows 8 for my daughter's account. At first I got meaningful reports via e-mail each week. But then the e-mails started reporting no activity, even though my daughter still uses the computer. The e-mails are still sent to me, but indicate that she is not using the computer at all. Family Safety is definitely still active on the computer. It limits how long she can use the computer. So only the e-mail reports are buggy. I don't know how to troubleshoot this since the e-mails are generated by Microsoft. Any ideas?
