• Sending mail to local address crashes web server (sendmail)

  When trying to send mail automatically from a script at example.com via PHP's mail() to [email protected], the Apache server throws an Internal Error. I believe internally it is configured to use sendmail. The message gets dropped into ~/dead.letter and the general error log reads: [Wed May 12 11:26:45 2010] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] malformed header from script. Bad header=/home/example/dead.letter... S: /home/example/www/test.php Trying any other address, not @example.com, works just fine. I have googled and serverfaulted for solutions, but they all require to edit configuration files in /etc/mail and similar system places, which is not an option, since this problem occurs on a shared host in which I only have access to ~/. Does anyone have a suggestion?

• apache2 mod_rewrite enable, but not working

  I have enabled mod_rewrite on my server and confirmed it using phpinfo() and it shows as enabled. I have the following in my httpd.conf file: ServerName 172.16.1.114 RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^/test$ /index.php I've tried the rewrite rule on another server and it works as expected. No errors are thrown to my apache error log and it restarts cleanly. When I try the page it 404s and doesn't load index.php I'm sure this must be a simple problem, but I am at a loss on how to figure it out. Any help is appreciated.

• TLS-SRP ciphersuites support in browsers

  i'm doing some research on how browsers support TLS-SRP (RFC5054). I know that TLS-SRP is implemented in GnuTLS, OpenSSL as of release 1.0.1, Apache mod_gnutls, cURL, TLS Lite and SecureBlackbox. I don't find any fresh source of information, only this from 2011: http://sim.ivi.co/2011/07/compare-tls-cipher-suites-for-web.html I'm testing them manually at the moment, but as far as i know nobody seems to support it. My interest is then in understanding if browsers are planning to support these ciphersuites in the future, apart from the current state. • PHP shell_exec times out, but not when executed manually

  I have a Windows 2008 server with PHP and msys installed. I also have a simple php script that calls shell_exec and tars a few files. When I run the script on my development machine (Windows 7), it works fine. However, when I run it on the Windows 2k8 server, it times out. When I copy and paste exactly what's being run on the cmd line and run it, it executes w/out error in less than a second. One more important detail: when I shell_exec 'dir' or 'netstat', the script runs without any problems. When I shell_exec 'ls' it hangs. When I run ls on the command line, it returns immediately. Other details that might be useful: The Windows 2k8 server is a VPS hosted by Rackspace. I did vanilla installs of Apache, PHP, and msys, but I haven't installed anything else. When I run whoami, I see the php script is executing as the user "nt authority\system".

• shared web hosting architecture in a university setting

  We're in the process of creating a shared webhosting infrastructure for our university. Departments within the university can host their sites on this infrastructure. We're thinking of setting up multiple, load balanced web servers attached to shared storage (for web content and Apache config files). There will also be database servers behind these web servers. Does anyone have any other suggestions about this? Any recommendations for an alternative setup? Would having cPanel/WHM/Plesk be a good idea to automate account creation/maintenance?

  After days of trying all sorts of tutorials I finally found a simple solution (not necessary the best) for a functional ubuntu mail server: sudo aptitude install postfix next type sudo dpkg-reconfigure postfix and configure like this: Internet Site yourdomain.com john (type your ubuntu user) yourdomain.com, localhost.localdomain, localhost No 127.0.0.0/8 [::ffff:127.0.0.0]/104 [::1]/192.168.0.1/24 (192.198.0.1 replace with your server ip address) 0 + all next install mail-stack-delivery sudo aptitude install mail-stack-delivery At this point you have a working mail server. Next, I configured SquirrelMail and start sending and receaving mail. This configuration worked with both Apache and Nginx.

I started working with eclipse i want to import the project to eclipse ide. using eclipse 3.6.1. when i create a new project using : File - New - Other - Java - Java Project from Existing Ant Buildfile and i provide the build file location i get the following error: Specified buildfile does not contain a javac task I have a red5 project that i used the same method and it worked. what am i missing? do i need to add something to the ant build file to make it work? what exactly ? where can i find more information regarding this specific subject ? thanks!

• How to configure bind9 to route to host's IP

  I'm running apache and bind9 on the same server. I would like to set a master zone to route back to this very machine's IP address without explicitly specifying it. Is this possible? If I use 127.0.0.1 for the A record, then when another computer on the network does an nslookup for mydomain.local, bind of course just returns the loopback ip (127.0.0.1) -- not the IP of the server. Is there to way to tell it to just return the network IP address for the server itself, as defined in /etc/network/interfaces?

• Improving server security [closed]

  I've been developing webapps for a while ... and I always had a sysadmin which made the environment perfect to run my apps with no worries. But now I am starting a project on myself, and I need to set up a server, knowing near to nothing about it. All I need to do is just have a Linux, with a webserver (I usually used Apache), PHP and MySQL. I'll also need SSH, SSL to run https:// and FTP to transfer files. I know how to install almost everything (need advice about SSL) with Ubuntu Server, but I am concerned about the security topic ... say: firewall, open/closed ports, php security, etc ... Where can I found a good guide covering this topics? Everything else in the server... I don't need it, and I wanna know how to remove it, to avoid resources consumption. Final note: I'll be running the webapp at amazon-ec2 or rackspace cloud servers. Thanks in advance!!

Name Based - typical tomcat virtual hosting, one HOME instance with many contexts, each as an individual host IP based / port based - multiple instances of tomcat ( how is it with performance and memory consuption?) running on IP aliases (virtual IPs) for one network adapter, usually behind http apache server that can run name based virtual hostings. Otherwise I can't figure out how would I forward requests in iptables/firewall based on IP address, which is just one. How is IP based virtual hosting done as to Tomcat and multiple instances ? I'd like to hear some usage scenarios from your experience. How are you running your applications. Cause there are applications having it's own modified classloader and they are developed in a way to run alone withing a tomcat instance.   I would like to add some type of tracking / alerting on some linux webservers running PHP and Apache. In doing searches I have come across a lot of info from 2006-2009. Would like to revisit things and see what others are doing now. The main purpose here is to track when any files are changed and if so alert me somehow. The same goes for IDS and hopefully something that can reside on same server? Since some of these are small scale projects I would prefer opensource/free solutions that are really effective. Although I would still like to hear of other alternatives if someone has the experience and the cost can be justified.

Splunk sort of fits perfectly but wondering if there are any open source alternative . i have looked at logstash and graylog2, but to my knowledge they are more of a log analysis tools. Piwik is sort of interesting except that i cannot put any javascript on the webpages. All i have access to is apache web log. Any recommendations please..

  I have created a platform that i want users to sign up and a new site is created for them instantly. Users will register and afterwards they will receive a username and password for their personal site. The system will work like ecommerce platforms such as www.shopify.com, www.bigcommerce.com, etc.. where users sign up and a new web-shop is created for them instantly.   I'm looking to replace my 5 year old laptop. I want my next laptop to endure at least this long. I typically have Thunderbird, Firefox, Eclipse Java IDE, Skype, a ssh session, and Apache Tomcat running. I'm currently running Karmic Ubuntu, but am agnostic about operating system and would move to Win 7 or OS X. I frequently travel with this computer. I also value battery longevity and power conservation (if possible). Above all I'm looking to minimize cost. I think the hardware that best meets my needs is an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 100GB @7200 rpm or SSD hardrive, and about 15 inch monitor. These specs are met by most brands. Does anyone know specific pros/cons and build quality for Macbook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad (W510 or T510), Sony's VPC-F1190, and ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 NoteBook? Are all i7 processors created equal? Do you have other suggestion that meet my needs?

  I would love figuring out how much time I actually have spent in shell performing administrative duties. For billing of course, this information is not sufficient, but it would be helpful to figure out how much time I have actually spent in shell. My question is: How anyone got tips on how to calculate time spent in shell (in hours + minutes), let's say per user account? Could anyone recommend a software that could be used to analyze this time? Optionally I would like to know about ways how to categorise time spent (e.g. 1 hour for Apache, 2 hours for Samba, etc.) Also, your takes on how you monitor your admin time, are also much appreciated! • How do I identify which rewrite rule is being trigger on IIS 7.5?

  I have a set of rewrite rules (offhand, I would say around 40-50) for a given server. It's basically to handle and reroute mangled URLs so that bad links still go to where they're supposed to go. I've come across an URL that is redirecting and I can't figure out which rewrite rule it is applying. My background is Apache and in that case I'd simply enable a rewrite log and look at the logged output to figure out what was happening. Is there an equivalent way to do this in IIS? bonus round Any way for me to view & edit the rewrite rules in a text file rather than the GUI interface?

• *nix OS that is easy to update to latest software

  I need to configure a server (*nix) that runs our (bespoke) CMS and Applications. In the past I have defaulted to using Cent OS 5, but I find this outdated difficult to upgrade the software to the versions we require. For example, we need PHP 5.3, but CentOS 5 has 5.2. Updating is fine but breaks something else (normally MySQL support in PHP). Eventually it will get to a situation where I can't upgrade because of missing dependancies and incompatible versions. Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 is needed by package httpd-devel-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3.i386 (updates) Is there a better alternative OS for hassle free updates, I need: Apache 2.2.17 (the development version for apxs) MySQL 5.5.8 PHP 5.3.5

• Running a defect php file cause error 500

  When I address a PHP file, I always get an error 500. I've looked up the logs of my Apache server, and this displays that some includes etc. in the PHP file address files which don't exist on the server. They don't exist because I'm just testing my PHP file. But could it be achieved that the server runs the php file in every case, even when something is wrong? Every 30 seconds an entry is made in the error_log file which says [Sat Jun 09 17:55:07 2012] [error] [client 10.224.55.160] File does not exist: /var/www/html/index.html ... but there IS an index.html?!

• (Open Source) Cloud-Filesystem to run a Database on Top?

  Hello, what are current "technologies and implementations" to get a filesystem with unlimited capacity by using single servers with their harddisk to form a "grid/cloud filesystem"? I need to have unlimited space (by adding further servers) but it must be a filesysem that is capable of running a database on top. I know of Apache Hadoop but that seems not be be Ideal for running a DB on top of it (or am I wrong??) And iSCSI seems to be "remote/networked" but I do not know how and if this is clusterable? thank you very much!! jens
