• Accessing SQL Server data from iOS apps

  Almost all mobile apps need access to external data to be valuable. With a huge amount of existing business data residing in Microsoft SQL Server databases, and an ever-increasing drive to make more and more available to mobile users, how do you marry the rather separate worlds of Microsoft's SQL Server and Apple's iOS devices? The classic answer: write a web service layer Look at any of the questions on this topic asked in Internet discussion forums, and you'll inevitably see the answer, "just write a web service and use that!". But what does this process gain? For a well-designed database with a solid security model, and business logic in the database, writing a custom web service on top of this just to access some of the data from a different platform seems inefficient and unnecessary. Desktop applications interact with the SQL Server directly - why should mobile apps be any different? The better answer: the iSql SDK Working along the lines of "if you do something more than once, make it shared," we set about coming up with a better solution for the general case. And so the iSql SDK was born: sitting between SQL Server and your iOS apps, it provides the simple API you're used to if you've been developing desktop apps using the Microsoft SQL Native Client. It turns out a web service remained a sensible idea: HTTP is much more suited to the Big Bad Internet than SQL Server's native TDS protocol, removing the need for complex configuration, firewall configuration, and the like. However, rather than writing a web service for every app that needs data access, we made the web service generic, serving only as a proxy between the SQL Server and a client library integrated into the iPhone or iPad app. This client library handles all the network communication, and provides a clean API. OSQL in 25 lines of code As an example of how to use the API, I put together a very simple app that allowed the user to enter one or more SQL statements, and displayed the results in a rather primitively formatted text field. The total amount of Objective-C code responsible for doing the work? About 25 lines. You can see this in action in the demo video. Beta out now - your chance to give us your suggestions! • Best Practices for High Volume CPA Import Operations with ebXML in B2B 11g

  Background B2B 11g supports ebXML messaging protocol, where multiple CPAs can be imported via command-line utilities.  This note highlights one aspect of the best practices for import of CPA, when large numbers of CPAs in the excess of several hundreds are required to be maintained within the B2B repository. Symptoms The import of CPA usually is a 2-step process, namely creating a soa.zip file using b2bcpaimport utility based on a CPA properties file and then using b2bimport to import the b2b repository.  The commands are provided below: ant -f ant-b2b-util.xml b2bcpaimport -Dpropfile="<Path to cpp_cpa.properties>" -Dstandard=true ant -f ant-b2b-util.xml b2bimport -Dlocalfile=true -Dexportfile="<Path to soa.zip>" -Doverwrite=true Usually the first command completes fairly quickly regardless of the number of CPAs in the repository. However, as the number of trading partners within the repository goes up, the time to complete the second command could go up to ~30 secs per operation. So, this could add up to a significant amount, if there is a need to import hundreds of CPA in a production system within a limited downtime, maintenance window.  Remedy In situations, where there is a large number of entries to be imported, it is best to setup a staging environment and go through the import operation of each individual CPA in an empty repository. Since, this will be done in an empty repository, the time taken for completion should be reasonable.  After all the partner profiles have been imported, a full repository export can be taken to capture the metadata for all the entries in one file.  If this single file with all the partner entries is imported in a loaded repository, the total time taken for import of all the CPAs should see a dramatic reduction. Results Let us take a look at the numbers to see the benefit of this approach. With a pre-loaded repository of ~400 partners, the individual import time for each entry takes ~30 secs. So, if we had to import another 100 partners, the individual entries will take ~50 minutes (100 times ~30 secs). On the other hand, if we prepare the repository export file of the same 100 partners from a staging environment earlier, the import takes about ~5 mins. The total processing time for the loading of metadata, specially in a production environment, can thus be shortened by almost a factor of 10. • JavaOne Session Report - Java ME SDK 3.2

  Oracle Product Manager for Java ME SDK, Sungmoon Cho, presented a session, "Developing Java Mobile and Embedded Applications with Java ME SDK 3.2,” wherein he covered the basic new features of the Java ME Platform SDK 3.2, a state-of-the-art toolbox for developing mobile and embedded applications. The session began with a summary of the four main components of Java ME SDK. A device emulator allows developers to quickly run and test applications before commercialization. It supports CLDC/MIDP CLDC/IMP.NG and CLC/AGUI. A development environment assists writing, running debugging and deploying and enables on-device debugging. Samples provide developers with useful codes and frameworks. IDE Plugins – NetBeans and Eclipse – equip developers with CPU Profiler, Memory Monitor, Network Monitor, and Device Selector. This means that manual integration is no longer necessary. Cho then talked about the Java ME SDK’s on-device tooling architecture: * Java ME SDK provides an architecture ideal for on-device-debugging.* Device Manager plays the central role by managing different devices whether it is the emulator or a device that Oracle provides or recommends or a third party device as long as the devices have a Java Runtime that supports the protocol that is designated.* The Emulator provides an accurate emulation, since it uses the same code base used in Oracle’s Java ME runtime.* The Universal Emulator Interface (UEI) makes it easy for IDEs to detect the platform.He then focused on the Java ME SDK release highlights, which include: * Implementation and support for the new Oracle® Java Wireless Client 3.2 runtime and the Oracle® Java ME Embedded runtime. A full emulation for the runtime is provided.* Support for JSR 228, the Information Module Profile-Next Generation API (IMP-NG). This is a new profile for embedded devices. * A new Custom Device Skin Creator.* An Eclipse plugin for CLDC/MIDP.* Profiling, Network monitoring, and Memory monitoring are now integrated with the NetBeans profiling tools.* Java ME SDK Update CenterCho summarized the main features: IDE Integration (NetBeans and Eclipse) enables developers to write, run, profile, and debug their applications on their favorite IDE. CPU ProfilerThis enables developers to more quickly detect the hot spot and where CPU time is being used. • Cloud Infrastructure has a new standard

  I have been working for more than two years now in the DMTF working group tasked with creating a Cloud Management standard. That work has culminated in the release today of the Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface (CIMI) version 1.0 by the DMTF. CIMI is a single interface that a cloud consumer can use to manage their cloud infrastructure in multiple clouds. As CIMI is adopted by the cloud vendors, no more will you need to adapt client code to each of the proprietary interfaces from these multiple vendors. Unlike a de facto standard where typically one vendor has change control over the interface, and everyone else has to reverse engineer the inner workings of it, CIMI is a de jure standard that is under change control of a standards body. One reason the standard took two years to create is that we factored in use cases, requirements and contributed APIs from multiple vendors. These vendors have products shipping today and as a result CIMI has a strong foundation in real world experience. What does CIMI allow? CIMI is both a model for the resources (computing, storage networking) in the cloud as well as a RESTful protocol binding to HTTP. This means that to create a Machine (guest VM) for example, the client creates a “document” that represents the Machine resource and sends it to the server using HTTP. CIMI allows the resources to be encoded in either JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) or the eXentsible Markup Language (XML). CIMI provides a model for the resources that can be mapped to any existing cloud infrastructure offering on the market. There are some features in CIMI that may not be supported by every cloud, but CIMI also supports the discovery of which features are implemented. This means that you can still have a client that works across multiple clouds and is able to take full advantage of the features in each of them. Isn’t it too early for a standard? A key feature of a successful standard is that it allows for compatible extensions to occur within the core framework of the interface itself. CIMI’s feature discovery (through metadata) is used to convey to the client that additional features that may be vendor specific have been implemented. As multiple vendors implement such features, they become candidates to add the future versions of CIMI. Thus innovation can continue in the cloud space without being slowed down by a lowest common denominator type of specification. Since CIMI was developed in the open by dozens of stakeholders who are already implementing infrastructure clouds, I expect to CIMI being adopted by these same companies and others over the next year or two. • Data Source Use of Oracle Edition Based Redefinition (EBR)

  Edition-based redefinition is a new feature in the 11gR2 release of the Oracle database. It enables you to upgrade the database component of an application while it is in use, thereby minimizing or eliminating down time. It works by allowing for a pre-upgrade and post-upgrade view of the data to exist at the same time, providing a hot upgrade capability. You can then specify which view you want for a particular session.  See the Oracle Database Advanced Application Developer's Guide for further information. There is also a good white paper at Edition Based Definition. Using this feature of the Oracle database does not require any new WebLogic Server functionality. It is set for each connection in the pool automatically by simply specifying SQL ALTER SESSION SET EDITION = edition_name in the Init SQL parameter in the data source configuration. This can be configured either via the console or via WLST (setInitSQL on the JDBCConnectionPoolParams). This SQL statement is executed for each newly created physical database connection.Note that we are assuming that a data source references only one edition of the database. To make use of this feature, you would have an earlier version of the application with a data source that references the earlier EDITION and a later version of the application with a data source that references the later EDITION.   Once you start talking about multiple versions of a WLS application, you should be using the WLS "side-by-side" or "versioned" deployment feature.  See Developing Applications for Production Redeployment for more information.  By combining Oracle database EBR and WLS versioned deployment, the application can be failed over with no downtime, making the combination of features more powerful than either independently. There is a catch - you need to be running with a versioned database and a versioned application initially so then you can switch versions.  The recommended way to version a WLS application is to simply add the "Weblogic-Application-Version" property in the MANIFEST.MF file(you can also specify it at deployment time). The recommended way to configure the data source is to use a packaged data source descriptor that's stored in the ear or war so that everything is self-contained.  There are some restrictions.  You can't use a packaged data source with Logging Last Resource (LLR) - you need to use a system resource.  You can't use an application-scoped packaged data source with EmulateTwoPhaseCommit for the global-transactions-protocol with a versioned application - use a global scope.  See Configuring JDBC Application Modules for Deployment for more details. There's one known problem - it doesn't work correctly with an XA data source (patch available with bug 14075837).

• Adding JavaScript to your code dependent upon conditions

  You might be in an environment where you code is source controlled and where you might have build options to different environments.  I recently encountered this where the same code, built on different configurations, would have the website at a different URL.  If you are working with ASP.NET as I am you will have to do something a bit crazy but worth while.  If someone has a more efficient solution please share. Here is what I came up with to make sure the client side script was placed into the HEAD element for the Google Analytics script.  GA wants to be the last in the HEAD element so if you are doing others in the Page_Load then you should do theirs last. If you have larger function to declare, you can use a StringBuilder to separate the lines. This is the most compact I wished to go and manage readability.

• What are different ways to reduce latency between a server and a web application? [closed]

  this is a question about a web application that provides SOAP web services. For the sake of this question, this web app is hosted on a server SERVER B which is located in California. We have an automated, scheduled, process running on a server SERVER A, located in New York. This scheduled process is supposed to send SOAP messages to SERVER B every so often, but this process typically dies soon after starting. We have now been told by the vendor that reason why the process dies is because of the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. The data traffic is routed through many diffent public networks. There is no dedicated line between SERVER A and SERVER B. As a result I have been asked to look into ways to reduce the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. So I wanted to ask, what are the different ways to reduce latency in a situation like this? For example, would it help to switch from HTTPS to some other secure protocol? (the thought here is that perhaps some other alternative would require fewer handshakes than HTTPS). Or would a VPN help? If a VPN would reduce the latency, how would it do that? NOTE: I am not looking for an explicit answer that would work in my specific situation. I am more like looking just for a simple list of what technologies could be used for this. I will still have to evaluate the technologies and discuss them internally with others, so the list would just be a starting point. Here I am assuming that there exists very few ways to reduce latency between two servers that communicate across public networks using HTTPS. Feel free to correct me if this assumption is wrong and please ask if there is a need for specific information. NOTE 2: A list of technologies is a specific answer to the question I stated in the title. NOTE 3: Its rather dumb to close this question when it is after all about me looking for information and furthermore this information can clearly be useful for others. • Let&rsquo;s keep informed with &ldquo;Data Explorer&rdquo;

  At Pass Summit 2011 a new project was announced. It’s a Microsoft SQL Azure Lab and its codename is Microsoft “Data Explorer”. According to the official blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dataexplorer/), this new tool provides an innovative way to acquire new knowledge from the data that interest you. In a nutshell, Data Explorer allows you to combine data from multiple sources, to publish and share the result. In addition, you can generate data streams in the RESTful open format (Open Data Protocol), and they can then be used by other applications. Nonetheless we can still use Excel or PowerPivot to analyze the results. Sources can be varied: Excel spreadsheets, text files, databases, Windows Azure Marketplace, etc.. For those who are not familiar with this resource, I strongly suggest you to keep an eye on the data services available to the Marketplace: https://datamarket.azure.com/browse/Data To tell the truth, as I read the above blog post, I was tempted to think of the Data Explorer as a "SSIS on Azure" addressed to the Power User. In fact, reading the response from Tim Mallalieu (Group Program Manager of Data Explorer) to the comment made to his post, I had a positive response to my first impression: “…we originally thinking of ourselves as Self-Service ETL. As we talked to more folks and started partnering with other teams we realized that would be an area that we can add value but that there were more opportunities emerging.” The typical operations of the ETL phase ( processing and organization of data in different formats) can be obtained thanks to Data Explorer Mashup. • Automatically change resolution when not in dock

  I have Ubuntu 11.04 (yep, I know it's old news) on my Lenovo W520. At home, I have a dock with dual monitors. I have a pretty decent setup - things work almost perfectly (hence the reason I'm reluctant to upgrade... that and I'm not 100% sold on Unity). Anyway, the only annoyance I have is that when I'm on travel, I use the laptop screen. When I un-dock the laptop, I need to manually go into nvidia x-server settings and change the resolution from 'Auto' to 1920x1200, or it will think I have two screens, and my mouse pointer will be able to go way off the left side of the screen. This isn't a big deal, but I need to do it every time I restart the x-server (so if I reboot, or have to kill it, etc...) What would be really nice is if there was a way for it to automatically detect whether or not there is external monitors (which it seems to do already), and switch into the mode I select, depending on which monitors are connected. Is there any way to accomplish this? • Protobuf design patterns

  I am evaluating Google Protocol Buffers for a Java based service (but am expecting language agnostic patterns). I have two questions: The first is a broad general question: What patterns are we seeing people use? Said patterns being related to class organization (e.g., messages per .proto file, packaging, and distribution) and message definition (e.g., repeated fields vs. repeated encapsulated fields*) etc. There is very little information of this sort on the Google Protobuf Help pages and public blogs while there is a ton of information for established protocols such as XML. I also have specific questions over the following two different patterns: Represent messages in .proto files, package them as a separate jar, and ship it to target consumers of the service --which is basically the default approach I guess. Do the same but also include hand crafted wrappers (not sub-classes!) around each message that implement a contract supporting at least these two methods (T is the wrapper class, V is the message class (using generics but simplified syntax for brevity): public V toProtobufMessage() { V.Builder builder = V.newBuilder(); for (Item item : getItemList()) { builder.addItem(item); } return builder.setAmountPayable(getAmountPayable()). setShippingAddress(getShippingAddress()). build(); } public static T fromProtobufMessage(V message_) { return new T(message_.getShippingAddress(), message_.getItemList(), message_.getAmountPayable()); } One advantage I see with (2) is that I can hide away the complexities introduced by V.newBuilder().addField().build() and add some meaningful methods such as isOpenForTrade() or isAddressInFreeDeliveryZone() etc. in my wrappers. The second advantage I see with (2) is that my clients deal with immutable objects (something I can enforce in the wrapper class). One disadvantage I see with (2) is that I duplicate code and have to sync up my wrapper classes with .proto files. Does anyone have better techniques or further critiques on any of the two approaches? *By encapsulating a repeated field I mean messages such as this one: message ItemList { repeated item = 1; } message CustomerInvoice { required ShippingAddress address = 1; required ItemList = 2; required double amountPayable = 3; } instead of messages such as this one: message CustomerInvoice { required ShippingAddress address = 1; repeated Item item = 2; required double amountPayable = 3; } I like the latter but am happy to hear arguments against it.

• LSI 9285-8e and Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 duplicate enclosure ID and slot numbers

  I am working with 2 x Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 chassis connected to a single LSI 9285-8e card in a Supermicro 1U host. There are 28 drives in each chassis for a total of 56 drives in 28 RAID1 mirrors. The problem I am running in to is that there are duplicate slots for the 2 chassis (the slots list twice and only go from 0 to 27). All the drives also show the same enclosure ID (ID 36). However, MegaCLI -encinfo lists the 2 enclosures correctly (ID 36 and ID 65). My question is, why would this happen? Is there an option I am missing to use 2 enclosures effectively? This is blocking me rebuilding a drive that failed in slot 11 since I can only specify enclosure and slot as parameters to replace a drive. When I do this, it picks the wrong slot 11 (device ID 46 instead of device ID 19). Adapter #1 is the LSI 9285-8e, adapter #0 (which I removed due to space limitations) is the onboard LSI. After getting in contact with a very knowledgeable Supermicro tech, they provided us with a tool called Xflash (doesn't appear to be readily available on their FTP). The first 2 enclosures logical ID is partially masked out where the 3rd one (which has a correct unique enclosure ID) is not. We pointed this out to Supermicro and were able to confirm that this address is supposed to be set during manufacturing and there was a problem with a certain batch of these enclosures where the logical ID was not set. We believe that the RAID controller is determining the ID based on the logical ID and since our first 2 enclosures have the same logical ID, they get the same enclosure ID. We also confirmed that 0000007F is the default which comes from LSI as an ID. The next pointer that helps confirm this could be a manufacturing problem with a run of JBODs is the fact that all 6 of the enclosures that have this problem begin with 00E. I believe that between 00E8 and 00EE Supermicro forgot to program the logical IDs correctly and neglected to recall or fix the problem post production. Fortunately for us, there is a tool to manage the WWN and logical ID of the devices from Supermicro: ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/utility/ExpanderXtools_Lite/. Our next step is to schedule a shutdown of these JBODs (after data migration) and reprogram the logical ID and see if it solves the problem.   I have a very simple MVC 4 application I'm trying to deploy to a Windows 2012 server. Inconsistently, when navigating to the root of the web application (http://localhost/app), it returns a 403.14-Forbidden: Detailed Error Information: Module: DirectoryListingModule Notification: ExecuteRequestHandler Handler: StaticFile Error Code: 0x00000000 Requested URL: http://localhost:80/test1/ Physical Path: c:\apps\test1\ Logon Method: Negotiate The web application is: Is a very vanilla VS2012 MVC4 Intranet template -- with only a tweak to a label to prove things were working. runs in an Integrated v4.0 application pool setup to use Windows authentication application pool has a custom AD Identity assigned (so it can gain access to a SQL server) application pool identity has read permissions in the c:\apps\test1 folder in which it is running It's an MVC4 application, targeting .NET 4.0 currently -There's no default document in an MVC4 application (like a default.aspx), as there shouldn't need to be one. I don't want to enable directory listings (as that's not the real error). Installed: Roles / Web Server (IIS) / Appliation Development / (.NET 4.5 Extensibility, Application Initialization, ASP.NET 4.5, ISAP Extensions, ISAPI Filters, WebSocket Protocol) Works locally on my machine in IISExpress on Windows 8 Has configured in web.config: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true" /> is set to precompiled during publish When I change the precompiled option to false, the web application does not fail (in my testing at least, it seems to work consistently). The reason I say it's inconsistent is that I've seen it work, then I've published, and the error returns. I can't find a pattern to the issue (and right now, I haven't been able to get it work again, at all). The 403 is returned from a local or remote web browser. I've had trouble finding a solution that isn't intended for older versions of Windows (like suggestions to reinstall ASP.NET which won't work on Windows 2012). I really don't know what else to try.

• Replication of lockoutTime attribute is not urgent on AD-LDS

  I have two LDS servers on the same subnet. They replicate well. If I change an attribute, it gets replicated after 15 seconds. LDS is configured to honor password policies. When a user makes too many wrong password attemps, his account is locked and that user's lockoutTime attribute is set accordingly. But lockoutTime is not replicated as urgent. In fact, it is not replicated unless there is another change somewhere in the directory. The lockoutTime attribute will be replicated. Here is an (edited Wireshark) trace.   I am using the net.tcp protocol for various web services. When I reboot my Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) macbook pro, the service never restarts automatically, even though that is how they are set: The only relevant events I can see are in the System Event Log: Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7001 None The Net.Tcp Listener Adapter service depends on the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service which failed to start because of the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7000 None The Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7009 None A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service to connect. This post suggests that it's something else blocking the port (in the post it's SCCM 2007 R3 Client which I don't use). What else could be the problem? If it's something else blocking the port, how do I figure out what? When I manually start the services, they start correctly. Dependencies are: Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service Net.Tcp Listener Adapter Still no luck, but I think the problem might be that my network connection takes too long to come up. • Performance analytics via DBMS "plugins", or other solution

  I'm working on a systems monitoring product that currently focuses on performance at the system level. We're expanding out to monitoring database systems. Right now we can fetch simple performance information from a selection of DBMS, like connection count, disk IO rates, lock wait times, etc. However, we'd really like a way to measure the execution time of every query going into a DBMS, without requiring the client to implement monitoring in their application code. Some potential solutions might be: Some sort of proxy that sits between client and server. SSL might be an issue here, plus it requires us to reverse engineer and implement the network protocol for each DBMS. Plugin for each DBMS system that automatically records performance information when a query comes in. Other problems include "anonymising" the SQL, i.e. taking something like SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > 20 AND name LIKE "%disk%" and producing SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > ? AND name LIKE "%?%", though this shouldn't be too difficult with some clever parsing and regex. We're mainly focusing on: MySQL MSSQL Oracle Redis mongodb memcached Are there any plugin-style mechanisms we can utilise for any of these? Or is there a simpler solution?

• pfSense: How to route traffic out the WAN port?

  Expert version i want to create a route in pfSense that will send traffic out the physical WAN port, not the PPPoE WAN port. i want to talk to talk to the web-server on my DSL modem, but it doesn't see packets wrapped in a PPPoE header. Long version My pfSense router is responsible for setting up the PPPoE connection over DSL to my ISP. When a machine on the LAN wants to sent packets to the internet, the default route sends packets out over the PPPoE connection. Those packets, wrapped in a PPPoE header, are sent on the ethernet cable to my DSL modem. From there they are sent the ISP, and the internet at large. i want a way to send a packet out the WAN port itself - not the PPPoE WAN port. My modem is sitting out there, with a http interface where i can monitor connection speed signal-to-noise ratio bandwidth connection time Whenever i try to set a route for destination of 192.168.2.1 (the IP that the modem will listen to for HTTP requests) to go out the WAN port, they instead end up going out the PPPoE port. The difference being that they're wrapped in a PPPoE protocol packet, and the modem isn't being sent the packet, it's being delivered to the ISP. Given that pfSense has no ability to direct traffic out the physical WAN port: how can i direct traffic out the physical WAN port on pfSense?

  So I have been following instructions on setting up Client Certificate Authentication in Apache2 w/ mod_ssl. This is solely for the purpose of testing an application against CAA, not for any sort of production use. So far I've followed http://www.impetus.us/~rjmooney/projects/misc/clientcertauth.html for advice on generating my CA, server, and client encryption information. I've put all three of them into /etc/ssl/ca/private. I've setup the following additional directives in my default_ssl site file: <IfModule mod_ssl.c> <VirtualHost _default_:443> ... • Existing open source software for wireless mesh networking?

  Hello! My goal: Build a wireless mesh network with some ALIX 2D2 (500 MHz AMD Geode LX800 x86 CPU, 256MB RAM, Atheros wireless card) Aside from working like a normal wireless mesh network users should be able to read/write data from/to the ALIX Boxes and the ALIX boxes should be able to process data. Questions: Should I try to flash dd-wrt x86, voyage linux (linux.voyage.hk) or something else? What (open source) software should I look into before I start? Should I use a 'server' for data storage and processing instead of the ALIX boxes? Is it even possible to use the ALIX boxes for routing AND data storage and processing? Final notes: Data can be anything, for example, I want to setup a wireless mesh using the OLSRD protocol so my whole town gets wifi and can access songs on the network. It's not for that, but that's the idea. I'm not afraid of programing, compiling or working with *nix. This is mostly 'for fun' rather than for practicality. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

• ActiveSync devices causing accounts to lockout

  When a user changes his account password for whatever reason (read: expired), and the old password is stored in his mobile device connected through EAS. This will cause his account almost immediately - as it should according to the lockout policy defined in the AD. It was easy to figure out that part. The hard part is keeping it from happening. I looked everywhere. Nothing. Basically there are four parts to the puzzle: the EAS device, the TMG (ISA) server, the EAS protocol and finally the AD. None of them have a way to stop the EAS device from failing to authenticate. So I figured I'll have to come up with a clever workaround. And the only thing I could come up with is to create a group for all EAS users and exclude them from the lockout policy, which obviously defeats the whole purpose of the policy, or to educate the users to update their devices with the new passwords, which is impossible. The question: Can you think of any other way to prevent EAS from locking out the accounts? Environment: Mostly iOS devices all through EAS. TMG 2010. Exchange 2007. AD 2008 R2.

• Apache is reponding a blank white page

  I have the following situation: A site hosted in apache 2.4, with ssl, that works like a charm for a while now, but out of no where, without modifications to the site, apache started serving random blank pages. The workaround this is to delete the cookies of the browser or restart the browser. I've switched the vitualhost to log in debug mode but it didn't got me anywhere. • Active FTP client blocked by Windows Firewall on Windows 7

  I have an application that runs as a service and contains an FTP client. It needs to connect to an FTP server that only supports Active FTP. When I attempt to get a list of files or download a file, Windows Firewall is dropping the incoming connection from the FTP server. (I don't believe we had this problem in Windows XP or Windows Vista.) Active FTP is the protocol that requires the the server to open a connection to the client on a port that the client specified. (http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html) I know I could open up a large port range in Windows Firewall and force my FTP client to only use those ports, but I would have guessed that Windows Firewall would support Active FTP natively. Is there some setting that needs to be made in order to have Windows Firewall automatically detect Active FTP and open up the necessary ports as needed? Can I change that setting programmatically? Thanks. PS- I asked this question on StackOverflow, but was told I should probably ask here as well.
