• Will learning to use Fedora also teach me my way around Redhat (CentOS)?

  I want to dive into the open source world and start using a Linux distro while learning to program. I've looked over the options and it pretty much boils down to Fedora or CentOS. The reasoning behind it is I'm hoping to kill two birds with one stone... Redhat seems to be "the choice" for servers, so I figure as I learn to program, I can also learn my way around Linux... or Redhat more specifically... and get that under my belt too. I want to use Fedora, and be on the frontier of new software (since I'm not doing anything critical), but if it's completely different than Redhat I'd rather just use CentOS. So is it? Or can I use one and know the other?

• How to automate slipstream?

  Since years I use slipstreamed Windows installations. This works very well, but preparing them is tedious : 1 - install a Windows with the last slipstreamed version we have (automated install) 2 - check Windowsupdate to see what's new, and take note 3 - download each new update available 4 - go to step 2 until no new update is available 5 - slipstream them into the last version we have (I already automated this step) I'd like a way to automate parts or all of this. Maybe a program able to know which updates are installed (already saw one, I don't remember which, and I know PowerShell can do this)... and able to download them ? Or to get them from local disk ? So the steps become : 1 - install a Windows with the last slipstreamed version we have (automated install) 2 - use Windowsupdate until no new update is available (any way to automate ?) 3 - use the magic program 4 - slipstream

• Hard-drive will randomly fail to load GRUB. Booting a live USB/CD fixes the issue temporarily

  I am running 12.04 64-bit and am dual booting with Win7, for full disclosure, although I suspect that has nothing to do with my problem. Occasionally the boot-loader(GRUB) will fail to load and I will be presented with a black screen with a single blinking line. There is no apparent pattern although I suspect there is one and it is related to a program I am running. This has happened to me eight out of ten power cycles now and I can fix it consistently, however, I have no idea why it happens. My current fix is to boot a live CD (I've tried both KNOPPIX and Ubuntu with the same result) and that's it. Somehow booting with the live CD is enough to "wake-up" my hard drive. I then reboot and GRUB magically appears again. So what is going on? Is it possible that a program is corrupting my MBR and the live CD is restoring it? How can I narrow down the possibilities? Thanks. Additional: This is still a problem. I'm convinced now that it is not hardware related as I've spent the last month and several boot cycles on Windows without a hiccup. Recently when I started using Ubuntu again the problem started again. I am more interested in figuring out what is going on rather than actually fixing the problem. Are there any tools, logs, etc. I can use to unravel this mystery?

• Fixing Windows 7 explorer issues

  OK, so here is the problem I'm hoping you guys can help me fix. On my Win7-Ult64 box, my explorer (among other things) has decided not to work. For example, if I try to use a program, say Chrome, to open a folder, I will get the message "Class not registered" (and its not program specific). In the same vein, when I go to Start-Rclick Computer-properties, nothing happens, but I can go to control panel-system properties and it will work. And other items in the control panel do nothing when I click them (and I have a feeling it is all tied together). I have already done multiple virus and spyware sweeps, so I know that isn't the problem. Any suggestions on what could be causing this/how to fix it (short of nuke and boot)?

• 100% CPU in QuickTime H.264 decoder on Windows on Win7, except when using XP compat. mode

  I have a Windows program that uses the Apple QuickTime API to play video. On Windows 7, CPU usage is 100% on one core, which I believe is why the playback is choppy. If I turn on XP compatibility mode for this program, the CPU usage is around 20% of one core, and playback is normal. Using a profiling tool called Very Sleepy (http://www.codersnotes.com/sleepy), I was able to narrow down the high CPU usage to a function in the QuickTime H.264 decoder called JVTCompComponentDispatch. I can't imagine why there would be a difference in CPU usage when XP compatibility mode is turned off or on. Any ideas?

  hi i have a problem, i have a user who created a database using ms access 2003 the problem is, if he's opening the db and made some changes, the other user can open the db but they can't work on it. but if he's exited the program, then the user can make some changes. i would like to know if its possible; that they can work at the same time when they open the database? • Resize windows command line prompt?

  I'm working on a Windows xp machine. I wrote a program in assembly that outputs some text, and am trying to create a screenshot of the command line output (start-run-"cmd"). The problem is that the text initially printed by the program gets pushed up by later text and I cannot scroll to it. I tried playing around with the width and height under properties = layout but it seems to resize the window itself (the borders) without resizing the textarea inside the window (text does not have more "room", but the window is bigger). Does anybody know a workaround/solution for this? Thank you!

• How can I restore the stored password in firefox 15.0.1 when deleted by error?

  I, by error, deleted my stored passwords, using the "Wise disc cleaner 7" program. As I saw on another thread, the passwords are stored in 2 files signons.sqlite and the encryption key file key3.db When opening the file signons.sqlite with the text editor, I can see that the web adresses of the sites belonging to the passwords are still there. They have not been deleted by the "Wise disc cleaner 7" program, and adding a stored password on Firefox just modifies the file. However, Firefox will not display my old stored passwords and neither their respective sites. Is there any way to "undelete" the passwords?

  Regarding BioPerl installation in Windows XP, I have installed Active Perl in Windows XP, and by using Perl Package Manager I have installed the BioPerl Repositories too. But I am not able to run the BioPerl yet. While running the BioPerl program in emacs it is showing the following error: make -k 'make' is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file I have tried to install Nmake for Windows but this error is showing.   I've been using PSshutdown remotely on our Windows XP machines for our weekly reboots because of its ability to reboot with the ability to abort the operation. I use ShTasks to create the weekly task. The Problem is on Windows 7 the task is created but never executes because of UAC even when I run the batch using an administrator command line, or with the elevate privileges switch. I saw another user "Bob" created a program called idleshutdown.exe which does something similar. Not sure how his program gets around UAC.

  So I have been looking through some code I wrote a few years ago for an economic simulation program. Each simulation has a large number of settings that can be saved to a file and later loaded back into the program to re-run the same/similar simulation. Some of the settings are optional or depend on what is being simulated. The code to read back the parameters is basically one very large switch statement (with a few nested switch statements). I was wondering if there is a better way to handle this situation. One line of the settings file might look like this: #RA:1,MT:DiscriminatoryPriceKDoubleAuction,OF:Demo Output.csv,QM:100,NT:5000,KP:0.5 //continues... • C++ Parallel Asynchonous task

  I am currently building a randomly generated terrain game where terrain is created automatically around the player. I am experiencing lag when the generated process is active, as I am running quite heavy tasks with post-processing and creating physics bodies. Then I came to mind using a parallel asynchronous task to do the post-processing for me. But I have no idea how I am going to do that. I have searched for C++ std::async but I believe that is not what I want. In the examples I found, a task returned something. I want the task to change objects in the main program. This is what I want: // Main program // Chunks that needs to be processed. // NOTE! These chunks are already generated, but need post-processing only! std::vector<Chunk*> unprocessedChunks; And then my task could look something like this, running like a loop constantly checking if there is chunks to process. // Asynced task if(unprocessedChunks.size() > 0) { processChunk(unprocessedChunks.pop()); } I know it's not far from easy as I wrote it, but it would be a huge help for me if you could push me at the right direction.   With my current Internet connection, it will take about 18 hours to download all the files needed to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10. Is there a way that I can first download the files in the background and then do the upgrade? Alternatively, if I use the graphical Distribution Upgrade tool via Update Manager, can I Cancel halfway through the downloads and start again where I left off, or will it delete the files it's downloaded so far?

• Spoof database connection to be local instead of remote

  I am trying to connect one of our clients "as is" programs to a remote database instead of a local one, they say that they have coded it to be able to do it, but for some reason the program crashes when trying to connect to a remote database. I don't have the source code so I can't really dig much deeper than that and the company does not provide any upgrades or custom modifications. I can succesfully connect to the database through SqlDbx and HeidiSQL so I know that the server is set up correctly. This is why I need to find a way to spoof a remote connection on port 1433 to appear like a local database connection to the program. I thought about editing the hosts file, but it will most likely crash other programs if I bind localhost to another IP than 127.0.0.1. Any ideas?

• Optimal partition setup for Windows 7 on SSD

  Hello, I'm setting up my system with Windows 7 right now, with knowledge that I am going to be getting a SSD in the future. What optimizations/setup should I do now to make a smoother transition in the future? Should I created two partitions - one for the OS and one for the data? Assuming this is the case, I would be able to easily ghost my OS partition onto the SSD in the future. If so, what should go on the OS drive besides the OS? Program files? If I install games or Visual Studio, should it go on the OS drive or the data drive? I can see the SSD filling up fast if I install all my program files on there. I've seen a few posts where people talk about leaving a portion of the SSD unformatted - is this something I should do? Thanks!

  I have developed a program in Java that uses on a local SQL Server instance to store its data. On some installations the SQL Server instance is not running sometimes. Users can fix this problem by manually starting the SQL Server instance (via services.msc). I am thinking about automating this task: the software would check if the database server is reachable, if not try to (re)start it. The problem is that on the same user account the Services can be stopped /started via services.msc (without any UAC prompt), but not via (non-elevated) command line. The operating system seems to treat services.msc differently: c:\>sc start mssql$db1 [SC] StartService: OpenService FEHLER 5: Zugriff verweigert (Access denied) c:\>net start mssql$db1 Systemfehler 5 aufgetreten. Zugriff verweigert (Access denied) So the question is: how can I stop/start the service from a java-program/command line without having my users to use services.msc (preferrably via on-board-tools)
