• Cannot boot after installing ubuntu on lenovo x120e

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my x120e using amd64 alternate iso image. The installation went fine, but it is having issues while booting after a successful installation, it says - "No Operating System Found". I followed the instruction at - help.ubuntu.com/community/X120e#Installation to purge grub-efi and installed grub-pc, even then I couldn't boot into ubuntu.(got the same "No Operating System Found") This is the file from boot-repair with this setup - http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/926556/ Then I asked in #ubuntu and they suggested me to create a bios-boot partition, I was not very comfortable with the solution they had suggested but gave it a try anyhow. I re-sized my initial partition and made 4 MB free space in the beginning of the partition and had set the flag bios_grub. Re-installed ubuntu 11.10 this time using amd64 desktop iso image file. Installation went fine as before but finally this time also the system didn't boot, it gave the same - "No Operating System Found" message. In BIOS I have the settings as to use both (Legacy and UEFI) and with UEFI tried first. • How to move an existing Win7 setup to a RAID-1 array?

  Currently I have a the following setup: Drive A/B: Identical HDD's Drive C: 2TB external drive with plenty of space currently. Hardware RAID controller Currently I have Drive A which is my boot drive (Win7), and Drive C which is a data drive, and Drive B which I only recently received and is blank. What is the best way of moving off of Drive A, setting up the hardware RAID and then migrating my data back onto the RAID array? I'm proficient with Linux, but I'm not sure if I can get away with simply using dd here. There is currently enough free space on Drive C to take 5-6 copies of a disk image of Drive A, so space isn't an issue.

• Why do some devices seemingly need the wifi router to reboot before they can connect?

  I've noticed a pattern but I'm not sure if it's a crappy router, crappy wireless device, or maybe everything is working as intended. I can wirelessly connect my office PC to the router's settings page for a day, maybe two, then afterwards I can't anymore until it's reset. Unrelated, but similar, in various places that offer free wifi, my kindle will connect fine most days, but occasionally won't unless the router is reset. After the reset, I connect ok. What's happening behind the scenes that makes a router stop allowing you to connect? Is it something on my end that's changing, or on the router's end?

• Will adding extra RAM in my computer speed it up?

  I have a 5 year old Dell Inspiron 530 desktop computer which is slowly grinding to a halt. Someone told me if i put extra RAM in itll speed it up. Inside the computer there are four slots for memory but only two has memory in them and they are 1GB each. if i bought another 2no. 1GB and put them in the free slots would it speed the computer up (would it be twice as fast?) and is it as simple as just putting them in or is there other things i need to do?

• USB port causing device problems after new motherboard upgrade

  I'm looking into a PC with an issue with one of the front USB ports (perhaps both). It was working before a motherboard upgrade but since then, a USB drive was inserted, overheated and does not appear to be working. Then a phone (with USB charging) was plugged in, and the phone OS suspended. Removing and re-inserting the battery led to the phone (and hence battery) working, however the battery no longer charges (including with a wall charger). It seems too much to be a coincidence and am wondering what the issue may be? Ideas so far are short circuiting, or over-current to the USB ports. Note: Did not occur to me, so details are not 100% accurate or complete. Feel free to ask for missing info that I may have forgotten though.

• Fullscreen Photo/Video Slideshow App?

  I have a folder that contains a lot of subfolders which include photos and/or videos. Is there any free application that would display them in a random slideshow? It's something I want to run on a PC mounted on a wall. I point it to that folder and it starts displaying it, with some random/nice transitions. No need for anything more fancy, except maybe Previous/Next controls. Edit: Just a quick clarification. Those pictures change all the time, and there are many of them. It's supposed to be in a store to display product pictures, so it's not like someone is actively watching the whole show. Currently, there are around 150,000 pictures or videos.

Later on, the recordings are great for rehearsal and repetition of the material. You can download and watch them offline while commuting, or what I'm going to do in the future - to use them as material for a study group within the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC). For sure, this is going to be a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to work with other Windows-oriented software craftsmen in order to 'push' them towards Microsoft certifications.   Is there something where I can see and control single(!) windows of PC1 on PC2 remotely. Basically like it is possible with X-Windows. I am not talking / asking about A software which displays the whole desktop remotely (like VNC, Windows RDP). A X-windows server for windows, to connect to Linux. The answer here ( Windows Remote Desktop Connection for just a single window (or a single program) ) requires Windows Server 2008. I need to run this on two Windows 7 machines. Example: PC1 shows three windows, and I transfer, see, and control window 2 on PC2. -- Edit -- I have checked whether there is an X-Server for Windows <- Windows. • How can I measure TCP timeout limit on NAT firewall for setting keepalive interval?

  A new (NAT) firewall appliance was recently installed at $WORK. Since then, I'm getting many network timeouts and interruptions, especially for operations which would require the server to think for a bit without a response (svn update, rsync, etc.). Inbound SSH sessions over VPN also timeout frequently. That clearly suggests I need to adjust the TCP (and ssh) keepalive time on the servers in question in order to reduce these errors. But what is the appropriate value I should use? Assuming I have machines on both sides of the firewall between which I can make a connection, is there a way to measure what the time limit on TCP connections might be for this firewall? In theory, I would send a packet with gradually increasing intervals until the connection is lost. Any tools that might help (free or open source would be best, but I'm open to other suggestions)? The appliance is not under my control, so I can't just get the value, though I am attempting to ask what it currently is and if I can get it increased.

• pdflush hanging on Amazon EBS drives when using multi-GB files - any workaround?

  Hello, When I run gunzip on a 1.7GB file (which generates an 8GB file) on an EBS volume, pdflush freezes after gunzip runs and the CPU hangs indefinitely at 100% IO Wait. Here's the output from 'ps aux | grep pdflush'. Note the D status root 87 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? D 06:18 0:00 pdflush root 88 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? D 06:18 0:00 pdflush The only solution is to kill the pdflush processes. The processes don't die immediately either. This problem is repeatable and happens with new instances. I'm running 2xlarge instances and I have way more RAM free than is being used (i.e. /proc/meminfo shows 20+GB MemFree) Has anyone found a workaround to this problem in the past? • Create PDF with internal hyperlinks

  I have an Excel workbook with an index page containing a series of images, that are each hyperlinked to different worksheets. Can anybody suggest how I can publish this to PDF so that the hyperlinks work in the PDF? When I publish or use PDF Factory, the hyperlinks are not preserved (and bookmarks aren't created for that matter either). I would prefer to do this with inbuilt functionality or free tools, though any suggestions welcome. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be with Excel. Publishing from powerpoint would be almost as good, and failing that, any easy solution which allows me to create a PDF containing clickable images that takes one to internal bookmarks might also be a workaround.

  I already use Google Analytics on my page, but I'd like to get additional info from log files. I've looked at various packages during last days, but nothing impressed me so far. Some requirements: must work on log file level (I use apache combined logs, but can configure apache to produce other types of logs) can generate static reports (windows/linux) or use GUI (windows only) should be easy to add custom user agents, and rerun analysis if it can recognize installation of eclipse plugins from log, that would be big plus understands google serp position referer should not require two days to setup (awstats, I am looking at you) should be still under active developement (i.e. analog isn't good answer) preferrably free, or at not very expensive :-) Any good analyzers programs out there?

• Reverse lookup of inode/file from offset in raw device on linux and ext3/4?

  In linux, given an offset into a raw disk device, is it possible to map back to an partition + inode? For example, suppose I know that string "xyz" is contained at byte offset 1000000 on /dev/sda: (e.g. xxd -l 100 -s 1000000 /dev/sda shows a dump that begins with "xyz") 1) How do I figure out which partition (if any) offset 1000000 is located in?(I imagine this is easy, but am including it for completeness) 2) Assuming the offset is located in a partition, how do I go about finding which inode it belongs to (or determine that it is part of free space) ? Presumably this is filesystem specific, in which case does any one know how to do this for ext4 and ext3?

• Which iPhone ad API has produced the highest revenue for you?

  This isn't a technical question, but more of a request for advice and empirical/anecdotal data. I'm nearly done writing a free app for iPhone, and I'm at the stage where I'm going to put ads into the app. I've had mixed success in the past with iAd (their fill rates have been atrocious recently, and their payouts have cut by about 75% over the past 4 months or so), and would like to know how much ad revenue you, the community, has seen from the various ad APIs you've used for your iPhone apps. This isn't a request for opinion, i.e. which is 'better', only what kinds of numbers you're seeing. I don't need absolute figures, but 'iAd pays x% higher than AdMob, and y% lower than AdSense' would be extremely helpful to me as I make my decision as to which ad API to integrate into my App. Also, have you had any experience or success with integrating multiple ad APIs into the same app? That's something I'm considering doing in my current iAd-filled apps (particularly my iPad app, which has yet to receive a single impression after nearly 60,000 requests)... something like: 1) Request-from-iAd 2) if that fails, request-from-adSense 3) if that fails, request-from-adMob 4) if that fails, ... etc.

• How can I use a Windows 2003 server as a HTTP proxy?

  I'd like to set up an HTTP proxy on a windows 2003 server so that I can access blocked websites such as YouTube from behind a corporate firewall (DAMN THE MAN!). I've never done this before, so I'm not even sure if the picture I have in my head is valid or possible. So I'm stuck behind a firewall that blocks sites that I need to access occasionally but that are blocked because of abuse by slackers. I've got a Windows 2003 server hosted out on the internet (i.e., outside of this odious firewall). I know I can configure my browser to use a proxy for my HTTP traffic, so why not use my server? What I'd like to know is: Is my concept valid? Can this be done, and will it work? How do I configure my server to act as a proxy? What applications may I have to install? Free is fine but don't leave out commercial software TIA

• Mobile development, recommended computer configuration?

  Hi, For the last 4 weeks, I have been trying to get into mobile development. Done a couple of tutorials, read some books, developed a couple of dummy Android apps. The thing is my computer is a 5 years old laptop, it is slow and time has come to replace it and I’m looking at different offers online. Have you got any recommendations? Is there any must-have that should make my developer life easier in the future? Is there anything specific that may be useful at a more advanced stage of development that I just can’t think of right now on the hardware side? (I mean apart from good proc, lots of RAM, many USB ports...) One thing I can think of is to have three OS on the same workstation: Windows, Unix and MacOS (so far I focused on android/java/eclipse but am interested in Iphone/objC/xcode as well) but that’s more on the software side. Anyway, would be grateful for any recommendations. Thanks in advance! • Server responses "bus error" to every command

  I have a linux machine dedicated to MySQL server with a pretty high load. Today I woke up and was terrified to see, that database server is down. I could connect to it via SSH, but it was responding with bus error to each and every command. [root@r1304 home]# ls Bus error [root@r1304 home]# tail /var/log/messages Bus error [root@r1304 home]# reboot Bus error [root@r1304 home]# free -m Bus error [root@r1304 home]# chkdisk Bus error I went to Data Center and did a hard reset, which seemed to help, but after a half an hour situation reapeated and now I can't even connet via SSH anymore. Any ideas what this could be? how to diagnose such a problem and what are possible fixes? Server has 32 GB RAM, 2xSSD drives with software RAID UPDATE According to Zabbix, when MySQL died, number of processes stated to increase drammaticaly, until I did a hard reset. What could those be? • Accessing locally hosted webpage via public IP

  Sorry if this is in the wrong place.I don't really know anything about server-related things, but I'm really curious about this. On my mac I figured out how to make a simple web page viewable via the local ip address or computer name on the LAN, and also how to hook it up with a free hostname from dyndns.com. So the dyndns hostname points to something, how can I access it directly? Typing in the global ip address (of the router) doesn't work, but if it did, how would it know which computer to point to? There must be some way of directly accessing what dyndns hostname points to by typing in some number, right? Sorry I don't really understand how it works.

  When a person mouse down, moves the mouse, and mouses up the system gets the different in the mouse down coord and the mouse up coords and loads in the new map items. However, the problem is it loads them every time so I want a way to track what has been loaded without too much work on checking or storing checks. Most promising. Came up with while typing this. Section the screen into 250x250 sectors and check if that sector has been loaded. Keep track of each corner of the screen and see if there is an area of those that have not loaded. Keep a record of the corners of the screen. When mouse up coords are greater then load the different. Problem is if they are at coord 10,000 then it will load from -10k to 10k positive and that is a lot of items to load. Check every item on the page to see if it is loaded. If I do this I might as well reload the whole page. If anyone has some suggestions; feel free to pass them on.

  While not directly related to programming, I figured that the programmers on here would be just as curious as I was about this question. Feel free to close the question if it does not meet with the guidelines. A name: first, possibly a middle, and surname. I'm curious about how much information you can mine out of a name, using publicly available datasets. I know that you can get the following with anywhere between a low-high probability (depending on the input) using US census data: 1) Gender. 2) Race. Facebook for instance, used exactly that to find out, with a decent level of accuracy, the racial distribution of users of their site (https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=205925658858). What else can be mined? I'm not looking for anything specific, this is a very open-ended question to assuage my curiousity. My examples are US specific, so we'll assume that the name is the name of someone located in the US; but, if someone knows of publicly available datasets for other countries, I'm more than open to them too. I hope this is an interesting question!

• Upgrading a hard disk – To repave or to migrate, that is the question

  I recently changed my laptop hard disk from the stock 250GB 5400 drive to a 320GB 7200 drive.  And no, I didn’t bought a SSD drive because the cost is way too much right now.  At $70, my upgrade was a lot cheaper than a SSD drive.  Maybe next year. When changing a system main hard drive, one must ask himself: To repave or to migrate, that is the question.  I choose to migrate so I went to the Acronis Website to take a look at their product line.  They have a few products that could do the job.  One being Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 and the other being Acronis True Image Home 2010.  Since True Image was just $10 more then Migrate Easy, I bought True Image. I inserted my new hard drive in a 2.5” USB enclosure, and started the migration process.  Once the data copied, I switched the drives.  The process went very smoothly and without hiccups.  Highly recommended. BTW, Acronis offers free trials so I guess that nothing can stop you from “testing” a migration  ;-) var addthis_pub="guybarrette";

• My pendrive is not working and showing Unknown file System

  I have a pendrive when I insert it into one o my port it shows in the My Computer but when I try to explore, it shows please insert a disk into drive H. However my usb drive is well inserted. I tried to format it but it is showing There is no disk in drive H, Insert a disk then try again. Its properties is showing Unknown File System and the used space and free space part showing 0 bytes. I cann't also check for errors in the drive. Its device status:The device is working properly. I also reinstalled the driver but that did not help me. Please suggest some way to recover the issue. • Computer freeze at night

  Every night except one this week my laptop froze over night. I tried to check the event viewer, but there's no real help there. Tonight I'll do a memtest to check the RAM. And this shouldn't be a temperature issue since I can play game without any problem (Diablo 3, League of legend) Is there any diagnosys tool I could use. Maybe something that would write time down every minute so I know the precise time when it freeze? I have win7 and 8gb of RAM I installed myself Answer to comment:Asus N71JQ Unknown time, but it seems differents if I look at the last entry in the logs I have no information to tell you, that's why I ask for tool and not the solution. I usualy go to sleep after midnight, but I have AVG free edition as antivirus
