• My pendrive is not working and showing Unknown file System

  I have a pendrive when I insert it into one o my port it shows in the My Computer but when I try to explore, it shows please insert a disk into drive H. However my usb drive is well inserted. I tried to format it but it is showing There is no disk in drive H, Insert a disk then try again. Its properties is showing Unknown File System and the used space and free space part showing 0 bytes. I cann't also check for errors in the drive. Its device status:The device is working properly. I also reinstalled the driver but that did not help me. Please suggest some way to recover the issue. Thanks.

• Computer freeze at night

  Every night except one this week my laptop froze over night. I tried to check the event viewer, but there's no real help there. Tonight I'll do a memtest to check the RAM. And this shouldn't be a temperature issue since I can play game without any problem (Diablo 3, League of legend) Is there any diagnosys tool I could use. Maybe something that would write time down every minute so I know the precise time when it freeze? I have win7 and 8gb of RAM I installed myself Answer to comment:Asus N71JQ Unknown time, but it seems differents if I look at the last entry in the logs I have no information to tell you, that's why I ask for tool and not the solution. • Upgrading a hard disk – To repave or to migrate, that is the question

  I recently changed my laptop hard disk from the stock 250GB 5400 drive to a 320GB 7200 drive.  And no, I didn’t bought a SSD drive because the cost is way too much right now.  At $70, my upgrade was a lot cheaper than a SSD drive.  Maybe next year. When changing a system main hard drive, one must ask himself: To repave or to migrate, that is the question.  I choose to migrate so I went to the Acronis Website to take a look at their product line.  They have a few products that could do the job.  One being Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 and the other being Acronis True Image Home 2010.  Since True Image was just $10 more then Migrate Easy, I bought True Image. I inserted my new hard drive in a 2.5” USB enclosure, and started the migration process.  Once the data copied, I switched the drives.  The process went very smoothly and without hiccups.  Highly recommended. BTW, Acronis offers free trials so I guess that nothing can stop you from “testing” a migration  ;-) var addthis_pub="guybarrette";

• How to change internal page numbers in the meta data of a PDF?

  I have a pdf document I created through non-Acrobat means (printing to pdf, then merging a bunch of pdfs), but I'd like to manually change the page numbers (i.e. the first several pages are simply title pages, the page that is labeled "page 1" is really the 7th sheet of the pdf). What's the simplest (and ideally, free) way to do this? To be clear, I am not trying to change the numbers on the pages themselves, but the page numbers in the "metadata" that the pdf stores (the pages themselves are already numbered correctly; I just want "go to page 1" to go to the page labeled 1, which could be sheet 7). For what it's worth, I'm on Windows, though I have access to Macs as well.

• Installing ubuntu 12.04 on macbook pro9,2

  I seem to have tried all the various suggested methods for installing ubuntu on a mbp, but can't seem to get anything that works and was wondering if anyone has run into any new problems with the latest non-retina models? I have a core i7 in my macbook, and model identifier is MacBookPro9,2. I have partitioned my HD using disk utility and have 700gig free space ready for the install (I haven't removed OSX Lion, it is still there in a 50gig partition). Problem: I am just getting a blank screen with a blinking cursor (unresponsive) in the top left whenever I boot from the disk. I left it for 20 minutes and nothing ever happened. This was without any boot manager, just holding "c" on startup. Attempted remedies: I have downloaded the 64 ubuntu iso from their site 3 times now and burned 4 separate discs to rule out some kind of corruption or burn error. I burned one in OSX Lion 10.7.4 and 3 on my windows 7 pc. I tried holding "alt" instead and then navigating to the windows disc to boot. Same thing happens, blank blinking unresponsive cursor. I also tried going to the EFI disc which actually brings up a menu (after saying "error prefix is not set") asking if I want to install ubuntu, test for errors or partition. All three options lead me to an unresponsive blank screen (some without cursors). I downloaded and installed rEFIt and if I hold "alt" on startup a linux penguin (Boot Linux from CD) appears in my boot options, along with the apple boot, and two others that I'm not sure of: "Boot EFI\boto\bootx64.efi from" and "Boot Legacy OS from". The "Boot Linux from CD" just takes me to the blank blinking cursor screen; again, I left if for 10+ minutes and nothing. I heard that the detection of the graphics card might be a problem and that I need change to nomodeset, but I have tried pressing F6 in all of the boot menus listed above and no options appear. Does anyone have any other suggested routes or can you see what I might have done wrong?

• Cutting up videos (excerpting) on Mac OS X -- iMovie produces super-large files

  I need to cut out parts of a video (+ the associated audio, of course) to make a short clip. For example, take 2 minutes from one location, 3 minutes from another part of the video, 30 seconds from another location and join it all together to form one single clip. The format of the input video is mp4 (H.264 encoding, AFAICR). Don't need very sophisticated merges or transitions from one part to the next, or sophisticated banners (text) on-screen, but some ability to do so would be a plus point. I've done this with iMovie in the past, but where the original file was under 5MB/min of play time, the chopped-up version was over 11MB/min of play time, which to me seems really bad. Is there a better/different way of doing this on OS X? Looking for free (gratis) solutions. OS: OS X 10.9.3

• .htaccess causes 403 error

  I have a working website on a free shared server. I decided to hire a dedicated server and purchase a domain for my website. I started uploading the files but things aren't working the way they should. First of all .htaccess is not working, however I set AllowOverride from None to All in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default DocumentRoot /var/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> I restarted the server of course. I enabled mod_rewrite: a2enmod rewrite and restarted the server. This change causes a 403 forbidden access error which I am unable to work out. If I change the All back to None then .htaccess is ignored so instead of loading the website the file hierarchy is loaded (the main page is index4.php which should be opened by .htaccess). If I rename index4.php to index.php the website loads, just fyi. The permissions on the file is 600. If I change it to 444 I get 500 Internal Server Error. I checked the logs and I see many errors of this: Permission denied: file permissions deny server access: /var/www/index.html

• Crap, hard disk failure. Can I recover my "move"d folders?

  I am in the process of moving all my files from an old laptop to new one. I just moved 11gb of data from my old laptop to a hard drive (external) and then upon moving it out to the new hard drive, the hard drive is getting a CRC (Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check). Now I am looking for a solution to recover the files that I moved on my old laptop (not the external). I understand they they are just marked for potential overwriting to free up space. I was getting ready to test out GetDataBack, but it says to install it on a healthy windows and use the recover-needed drive as an external. However, I don't want to turn off my computer without first getting the okay since it is in a "moved" state. Please help! What can I do to recover the Moved files. I haven't touched the computer since it has been moved. What can I use to recover them?

• Registry Search & Replace Tool

  Can anyone recommend a good (and ideally free) Registry Search & Replace tool? There seems to be a lot of utilities that searches the registry, but not very many that does the replacing. I've found some really old ones (from the late 90s to 2007). I was hoping for newer ones or ones still maintained. I did run across RegReplacer, but that one doesn't seem to work very well (It only found 2 instances of a string where NirSoft's RegScanner caught 449). I also found Registrar Registry Manager via this question here, but it's $44 :-\

• Not able to output to file in the Windows command line

But when the loop runs for the second time, path and size are not getting printed to the file. size.txt only contains the path and size of the 1st folder. • Wifi won't connect to certain networks

  As I write this, I'm in a coffee shop on my laptop, and I am trying to connect to the free wifi network they offer. Every time I select their network from the wifi applet drop down menu, it connects for a second and then disconnects. At the same time, I have my Android phone with me, and it connects to the coffee shop's network without problem. There are a couple of people around me also using the same network with no issues. I asked the staff to check and as far as they can tell there is no problem with their router or anything. I have tried rebooting, but it has not made a difference. I have double and triple checked that I am using the correct WEP password. As an added wrinkle, when I connect to another network, it seems to connect (although I can't use them because they are paid gateway services). So I'm able to ask this question now because I have tethered my laptop to my phone, but it's slow and a workaround, not a solution. All indications are that it's a problem with my computer against this one network. Why would that be and how can I fix it?

• Where are the Windows 7 System Restore Points stored and how to preserve them?

  I am using Windows 7 Professional. My system crashed few days back and to recover that, I inserted the Windows 7 DVD. While running the System Restore from the DVD, it showed there are no restore points. It shocked me. I created few restore points, where they disappeared. Is there a way to preserve these restore points from accidental deletion? Is there any other FREE tool to take snapshot of the image on other disk?

• Advantages to upgrading from SharePoint Foundation 2010?

  I feel like this should be extremely obvious, but after staring at this document from Microsoft and Googling for a while I'm still at a loss as to the advantages of SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Enterprise 2010 over SharePoint Foundation 2010. My users currently use SharePoint Foundation 2010 to collaborate on a handful of excel documents within the office. There is talk of expanding to have a second and third SharePoint server at another plant and at our corporate offices. If there is a reason to upgrade now would be a good time to ask for the money while we're talking expansion. Is it worth it from either an administrative or an end-user perspective? Or is the free version really just that wonderful?

• How to reduce the CPU load on a hosting with WordPress installed as a CMS? [on hold]

  I have been using hostgators hatchling plan for three months. I got an email from the hosting that my website is creating an over load on CPU. They said that I am eating up their processor and as a precaution, they have temporarily suspended my account. When I contacted their customer support, they said: You have to optimize your database and use some sort of caching mechanism, where the script does not need to generate a new page with every request, helps to lower the over load that a script will cause. I am not a technical geek, I am wondering how I will do this thing. I don't have any resource to hire a web developer to do this job. My website is down for 48hours. I was using wp super cache along with cloudfare's free support. Now I have intalled optimize-db plugin and optimized my database. Please provide me with some more tips on how to optimize my database to reduce CPU usage. Any help would be appreciated.

• Sudden complaint that Windows is not genuine - some questions

  Hi, I used to use VMWare Workstation and made several VMs with Win Server 2008, which worked fine. My first tasks were to setup RDP, updates, and activate the OS. I deleted Workstation and thus did not have my VMs available to use for about 2 months. Now I have VMWare Server 2.0.2 as I this is free and I am going to get Hyper-V on a host Win Server in about March, but when I have accessed one of my VMs (haven't tried the others yet), it complains that the copy of Windows is not genuine. I now have a black screen but can access all my apps on the VM. Will the OS eventually shut me out from accessing it? I got my key from the Action Pack but the standard R2 key has been taken down and replaced with the Enteprise R2 key. I have Enterprise R2 but apparently the autorun is corrupt! Thanks

• How can I run my program on a large number of computers? [closed]

  I'm looking for a (preferably free) service for running an executable I wrote? It's not malicious, it's not a virus, it's not scam, and if this is really important I can upload the python source code instead. I wrote a small crawler to gather information regarding the style of web pages for my MA project, and I need a lot more data. EDIT Here is more information on my problem and how I approach on solving it, and where I'm stuck. As part of my research I'm trying to classify text based on it's style (font-family for now), my data is based web pages, so I wrote a client/server application - the client is a crawler that gathers this data and send it to the server. The problem is that like 99% of the internet is Arial, Verdana and Helvetica - other fonts are far more rare, so I need to spend very long time to gather enough data regarding these fonts. • Cannot copy anything onto WD Elements 1TB External USB HDD

  I have a Western Digital 1023 Elements 1TB External USB HDD. Recently, it has started an unusual problem. I cannot copy any file of any size on to that 1TB hard-drive, eventhough it has more than 400 GB free (out of 931GB actual size). I tried copying movies from one friends laptop, which did not work. I also tried another desktop to copy some study material e-books (in PDF), which also did not work. I get same CRC error when I try to copy anything from a computer's hard-drive onto this WD 1TB hard-drive. Vice-versa it's working. I mean, I can copy any file from the USB HDD onto local machine's HDD on any computer. It's like one-way traffic. This HDD is only 1 year old. What are my options ? Any suggestions ? • ASP Guidance - Development on laptop with limited internet access (nonhosted)

I am home for winter break and have limited internet access but would like to learn ASP using C#. Am I able to do development for ASP (and see the results) for free on my laptop (with no internet access), and if so what tools do I need? Ideally I'd like to do development in Visual Studio and see the results in my browser via localhost. Extra tools I might need would be helpful as well.

• How do I get rid of sockets in FIN_WAIT1 state?

  I have a port that is blocked by a process I needed to kill. (a little telnet daemon that crashed) The process was killed successfully but the port is still in a 'FIN_WAIT1' state. It doesn't come out of it, the timeout for that seems to be set to 'a decade'. The only way I've found to free the port is to reboot the entire machine, which is ofcourse something I do not want to do. $ netstat -tulnap | grep FIN_WAIT1 tcp 0 13937 10.0.0.153:4000 10.0.2.46:2572 FIN_WAIT1 - Does anyone know how I can get this port unblocked without rebooting?

(friendly interface = esay to use) why not use rythmbox, well it has bugs, the shuffle button doesn't work because it shuffles the next song after each song. • What to do as a new team lead on a project with maintainability problems?

  I have just been put in charge of a code project with maintainability problems. What things can I do to get the project on a stable footing? I find myself in a place where we are working with a very large multi-tiered .NET system that is missing a lot of the important things such as unit tests, IOC, MEF, too many static classes, pure datasets etc. I'm only 24 but I've been here for almost three years (this app has been in development for 5) and mostly due to time constraints we've been just adding in more crap to fit the other crap. After doing a number of projects in my free time I have begun to understand just how important all those concepts are. Also due to employee shifting I find myself to now be the team lead on this project and I really want to come up with some smart ways to improve this app. Ways where the value can be explained to management. I have ideas of what I would like to do but they all seem so overwhelming without much upfront gain. Any stories of how people have or would have dealt with this would be a very interesting read. • MS Access ADP front end and SQL Server back end for field data collection?

  I am an anthropologist. I am going to the field and will use a netbook to collect survey data. The survey forms will need to allow me to enter data into multiple tables, search tables, allow subforms, and be fast enough to not slow down my interview. I have considered storing the data in a SQL Server Express 2008 R2 server (there will be a lot of data) while using a Microsoft Access data project as a front end. To cut down the number of steps required to collect and store data, I'm considering using the netbook for both data storage and collection (after reading this article about SQL Server on a netbook). My questions are: (1) Is there a simpler solution that is also gratis (gratis because I already have a MS Access license from my workplace, and SQL Server Express is, obviously, free)? (2) Does my idea to store and collect data using the netbook make sense? Thank you.
