I just installed postgresql onto an ubuntu box.
How can I create user foo with password bar and database baz, so that foo owns baz?
foo is not a unix user.
I want to replace postfix with exim4 on my Ubuntu test server to reflect the setup I have on my production server, but apt-get and aptitude (quite understandably) insist on removing several packages that depend upon having a mail stack.
However, in this case I am prepared to override apt-get's undoubted good sense as exim should fulfil all the requirements of the dependent packages, providing mail and sendmail functionality for my applications. I don't want to remove the dependent packages as there is months of effort invested and, although backed up, will be a pain to reconstruct properly.
I want to change OpenJDK to SunJava in my ubuntu linux desktop , i have downloaded the "jdk-7.tar.gz" from sun's website, but there problem is how to make the system to use the newly downloaded java ? I tried adding the new jdk/bin/java to my PATH ( from .bashrc ) but that seem not to work (cause probably OpenJDK's path is inside my PATH variable as well , so the system checks that first)
Here's my JDK7 : /usr/lib/jdk7/bin/java
Here's what $(which java) outputs : /usr/bin/java
Thanks in advance
I am having this problem (apache2, ubuntu 12.04)
I have put all my sites in /home/username/vhosts folder
I have added permissions to home and username to be x and chmod -r 777 on vhosts
Added /etc/hosts to access my sites with desired names
Did a2enmod rewrite
But still I have this error:
[Sat Jun 23 00:05:23 2012] [crit] [client 127.0.0.1] (13)Permission denied: /home/username/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable
WHY is it not readable? I did
sudo -s
su - www-data
and with that I can correctly list the /home/username dir
What is wrong with me or apache?
I have a new HP dv7t laptop. Can I find out what DPI this laptop supports so that I can set my Ubuntu settings? I think I got the resolution working right after I installed the proprietary driver for the Nvdia graphics card.
Thank you.
I'm using Evolution for reading my emails at my Ubuntu 9.10.
I would like to run a personalized command when it receives a mail, like checkgmail.
Example:
blink --scrolllockled --rate {number-of-new-mail}
Is it possible?
This story starts with me taking my USB stick to work
and unplugging it by accident in the middle of a file transfer.
The USB stopped working completely, now I have Linux Ubuntu on my Laptop at home
So I tried messing around with Gparted and Fdisk and all it did
Was making my USB stick be partition less and 8 MB instead of 2GB
So instead of creating more havoc, I ask kindly for help.
I tried going to fdisk /dev/sdb
and inside there were no partitions, added a new one
but that didn't really do anything, /dev/sdb1 was none-existent..
With a typical USB hard drive enclosure, is the full range of drive power management functionality available?
In what may be an unrelated matter: is it possible to suspend a PC without unmounting an attached USB-powered drive, and then remounting it on resume? This is the behaviour I'm currently seeing (running Ubuntu linux 10.10).
Are there certain models or brands that provide more complete control over this aspect of drive operation? My Friendly Neighbourhood Computer Store carries (part of) the Vantec Nexstar product line.
I ssh to a ubuntu sever, start a web project(Rails), then I can visit this project.
I close the the ssh terminal, then the project says can not find files(view pages, css files and so on).
I put the project in the home folder(/home/byht).
why?
When closing the ssh terminal, the user's folder can not be visited ?
You know, when I put the project in another folder(/usr/local), everything goes well.
I have an add-on called Flash-Aid in Firefox 4 on my Ubuntu build, but ever since Mozilla came up with their new UI, I haven't been able to figure out how to get add-ons to actually run within Firefox. Double clicking them just opens up a detail page about them and there are no options to run them. With most add-ons, this isn't a problem since they usually don't need to be explicitly run, but this one does. Can someone tell me how to do this?
Hi, I'm running ubuntu on my notebook and I need a way to check (from the command line) if the power cable is connected. Is there any system file that keeps log of this? or is there a bash command that will help me?
I need this for a script that will behave differently depending on whether the power cord is plugged in or not.
If you replaced a broken Harddisk in a RAID 5 the raid must be resynced, which can last lots of hours, if it has some TeraBytes.
If this resync is interrupted by powerloss, can the server be rebooted and the resync be started over again?
(I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on my server in my livingroom and it shut down into hibernate mode, cause I accidently hit the powerbutton while the resync was still running)
I've an old hp1100 and ubuntu 9.10 and now upgraded to lucid prerelease. I can't see my printer on network (using smb://mycomputer on nautilus or \mycomputr from xp).
As long as i will not restart smbd (on lucid: sudo restart smbd) my printer is not visible as network share. All file shares are always visible. My printer is visible and working after smbd restart
Any clue what might cause this ?
I am looking for a wireless usb print server that will work with my netbook running ubuntu and my main pc running windows.
There seems to be little information on anything that works with both reliability.
Dose anyone know of anything that will work?
thanks
Ok, Here is the technical description.
My laptop's config:
Ip Adress:192.168.2.5
Mysqlserver 5.0 on port : 3306
Operating system: Ubuntu
the database is in this machine
My friend's laptop config:
Ip Adress:192.168.2.4
Mysqlserver 5.0 on port : 3306
Operating system: Windows XP
Both are on a wireless LAN connected through a belkin router (192.168.2.1)
I put this but its not working:
url = "jdbc:mysql://192.168.2.5:3306/Database"
so how configure to connect to this database?
I'm looking for a good way to benchmark the performance of Ubuntu machines (preferably from the command line - only care about harddrive speed, memory, and cpu - not graphics). Are there any programs that could also be used on Mac or Windows so I could compare the results against an Apple or PC Desktop?
Ultimately I'd like to use these benchmarks to compare different virtual machine configurations (speeds on different hosts and different hardware to get practical idea of the differences between different setups a rigs).
Thanks!
this might be strange for some people to hear, but I want to buy Samsung Chronos notebook and install Ubuntu alongside with Windows. And I want to know if there could be any trouble with hardware? I mean if all the ports should work fine, keyboard special buttons, lights on keyboard, this fast boot technology (wake from hibernation in few seconds), etc.
Thank you for attention and forgive me if this question sounds weird for some of you.
When my netbook boots, the GRUB menu does not wait me to choose between systems. It goes automatically into Ubuntu system. How can I solve this problem?
Hi,
I have installed ubuntu and kubuntu on my same machine.
How can I re-arrange the order of the boot menu And the 'default' option if I dont' click anything? Is the boot menu call GRUP or something like that?
Thank you.
Just started using ubuntu on a machine and I'm also using a new video card. The system has freezed up a couple of times in the last hour. The display remains static, and the mouse cursor does will not move. Any ideas what could cause this?
I am using the latest dev channel version of Chrome in Ubuntu 9.10. Before Chrome automatically updated a few days ago, I had the option to pin tabs. This option no longer appears when I right-click on a tab. Is anyone else having these problems? If not, any idea what I can do to fix this? Thanks.
I have two Ubuntu servers on which I'm trying to upgrade VIM to 7.2, but apt-get install vim only lists version 7.1 which is already installed. Same with a search in aptitude.
I've made sure my sources are updated, but it looks like they're pulling from either 'intrepid' or 'hardy', which I assume is part of the problem.
How should I go about installing 7.2?
Hi!
I've got a VPS running Ubuntu 9.10 and I cannot sftp to the server with a regular account. I can ssh with a regular account and I can also ssh and sftp with root.
Is there an option that I need to turn on so that regular users can use sftp?
Thanks in advance,
J.
I'm trying to run Apache with mod_wsgi to run Python scripts. The server is running Ubuntu 12.04 with Zend Server installed, but when I enable the wsgi module Apache will not start. I get an error message of "apache2: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed" in the error log. I installed the module using the Debian package.
I can't seem to find this specific problem anywhere so maybe it's a problem with Zend Server? I'm stumped.
Thanks
