• breaking datetime into constituent parts ASP.NET MVC form

  hi guys, i have searched the web relentlessly for this and have not found anything - which is surprising because i would think it is such a common scenario! Basically, on my model i have a DateTime field which i wish the user to populate through a form. I am using the Html helper to render all other parts of the form (along with validation) So this question is in two parts... Html Helper Firstly, is there any way to use the Html helper to split the DateTime field to be rendered as the three constituent parts of a date: day, month, year (since i do not care about the time part). This could be rendered as text boxes, drop down lists or a combination of both. Model Binding And then when the form is posted, what is the best approach for binding back up to the model? I have seen Scott Hanselmann's solution to this, but it seems a little bloated for what i need - i was hoping for a slightly more elegant solution. Is it recommended to extend DefaultModelBinder and set that as default binder (since all dates would be handled in this way) or write a class that implements IModelBionder and set it as the default binder for the DateTime type? Thanks for all the help in advance :-) i'm loving MVC but it's infuriating me that something so trivial is causing so much headaches!

• MySQL left outer join is slow

  Hi, hoping to get some help with this query, I've worked at it for a while now and can't get it any faster: SELECT date, count(id) as 'visits' FROM dates LEFT OUTER JOIN visits ON (dates.date = DATE(visits.start) and account_id = 40 ) WHERE date >= '2010-12-13' AND date <= '2011-1-13' GROUP BY date ORDER BY date ASC That query takes about 8 seconds to run. I've added indexes on dates.date, visits.start, visits.account_id and visits.start+visits.account_id and can't get it to run any faster. Table structure (only showing relevant columns in visit table): create table visits ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `account_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `start` DATETIME NOT NULL, `end` DATETIME NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8; CREATE TABLE `dates` ( `date` date NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`date`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1; dates table contains all days from 2010-1-1 to 2020-1-1 (~3k rows). visits table contains about 400k rows dating from 2010-6-1 to yesterday. • Preprocessor Conditionals

  I was wondering if it would be possible to have a define which changes values at some point in the code be used in a conditional. Basically something like this: //////////////////////////////////////////// SomeFile.cpp #define SHUTDOWN false while(window->isOpen()) { if(SHUTDOWN) window->close(); // Rest of the main loop } //////////////////////////////////////////// SomeOtherFile.cpp if(Escape.isPressed()) { #undef SHUTDOWN #define SHUTDOWN true } Thus causing the app to close. If it's not, would having a function like RenderWindow* getWindow() { return window; } and then calling if(Escape.isPressed()) getWindow()->close(); The best way to do it? I'd rather not go that route because the classes that are calling the key event are members of the class controlling the main loop and the window, so I'd have to set pointers to the containing class in the smaller classes to call getWindow() and it just seems like a more complicated method. But if I can't do it with preprocessor directives I'll just have to use pointers to the parent class.

• OO C++ - Virtual Methods

  Just a really quick question here. I'm using virtual functions to read in from a text file. Now, it's virtual because in one aspect I want the values to be normalised, and, in the other respect I don't want them to be normalised. I have tried to do this: bool readwav(string theFile, 'native'); So in theory, if the 'native' is used, this method should be called, however, if 'double' is called then a different version of the method is called. Same for if the value is empty, it should just perform the native option. First question, why doesn't the declaration above work? Also, is this the best route to go down? Or, would it be better to have just one class method that switches between the options. Thanks :)

• How to use multiple identity numbers in one table?

  I have an web application that creates printable forms, these forms have a unique number on them, the problem is I have 2 forms that separate numbers need to be created for them. ie) Form1- Numbered 2000000-2999999 Form2- Numbered 3000000-3999999 dbo.test2 - is my form information table Tsel - is my autoinc table for the 3000000 series numbers Tadv - is my autoinc table for the 2000000 series numbers What I have done is create 2 tables with just autoinc row (one for 2000000 series numbers and one for 3000000 series numbers), I then created a trigger to add a record to the coresponding table, read back the autoinc number and add it to my table that stores the form information including the just created autoinc number for the right series of forms. Although it does work, I'm concerned that the numbers will get messed up under load. I'm not sure the @@IDENTITY will always return the right value when many people are using the system. (I cannot have duplicates and I need to use the numbering form show above.   hi, I'm calling a javascript function from my flex application to set width and height of my html wrapper according to application size. However, I've many flex applications on my page and the wrappers have not id attribute. I'm using a unique javascript function and passing it the parameters. How could I specify the "parent" html element in these parameters ?   Hi, I have a few properties defined in my header file like so @property (assign) bool connectivity_N; @property (assign) bool isConnected_N; In my implementation file I have an init and the synthesized properties like so @implementation Map @synthesize connectivity_N; @synthesize isConnected_N; a init to set the initial values like so -(id) init { if( (self=[super init]) ) { //initialise default properties self.connectivity_N=NO; self.isConnected_N=NO; } return self; } I'm running into an error that states Error: accessing unknown 'connectivity_N' class method. In this public method within the class +(bool) isConnectable:(directions) theDirection{ bool isTheDirectionConnectable= NO; switch (theDirection) { case north: isTheDirectionConnectable= self.connectivity_N; break; I'm not sure why is this so as I'm trying to grab the value of the property. According to the apple developer documentation "The default names for the getter and setter methods associated with a property are propertyName and setPropertyName: respectively—for example, given a property “foo”, the accessors would be foo and setFoo:" That has given me a clue that I've done something wrong here, I'm fairly new to objective C so would appreciate anyone who spends the time to explain this to me. • If Statements Skipping or Evaluating Strangely, JavaScript and jquery

  So in jQuery, I have a global variable "currentSubNav" that stores a current visible element. The following code executes on "mouseenter". I need it to get store element's ID, check to see if there was one. If there wasn't, set the new visible element to the default. $('#mainMenu a').mouseenter(function() { var newName = $(this).attr("id"); if(newName == ''){ var newName = "default"; } Then it checks to see if the new element matches the current one. If so, it returns. Problem #1 "$(this).attr("id");" isn't returning undefined as the documentation claims. It seems to be returning "". BUT, when I have the if statement as I do above, it skips over the statement entirely. I set a breakpoint, but it never pauses execuation, so the statement is never evaluated. Problem #2 After the animations occur, instead of using the return at the end of the statements it goes back and uses the return for the "newName == currentSubNav" if statement. I guess that not a big deal, but it's not the intended behavior. I'm fairly new to JavaScript, and it appears I'm missing something about how JavaScript works. But I can't find what anywhere. • Regular non-low energy bluetooth for IOS

  Ok, so I can't get my app to connect with a peripheral using bluetooth low-energy(my app is installed on an iPhone 5s and I have LightBlue installed on an iPhone 4S, simulating a peripheral. I also have light blue installed on the 5s, simulating a central, to verify that the two can connect and they do.) I have verified that the centralManager is instantiating and the State is powered on. So, my question is, is regular bluetooth still a viable option? Can I just use the GameKit API and go that route? • Convert enumeration to string

  I am trying to build a function that converts an item from an enum to its corresponding string. The enums I use are fairly long, so I didn't want to use a switch-case. I found a method using boost::unordered_map very convenient, but I don't know how to make a default return (when there is no item matching the enum). const boost::unordered_map<enum_type, const std::string> enumToString = boost::assign::map_list_of (data_1, "data_1") (data_2, "data_2"); I tried to create an additional function: std::string convert(enum_type entry) { if (enumToString.find(entry)) // not sure what test to place here, return enumToString.at(entry); //because the find method returns an iter else return "invalid_value"; } I even tried something exceedingly wrong: std::string convert(enum_type entry) { try{ return enumToString.at(entry); } catch(...){ return "invalid_value"; } } Result: evil "Debug" runtime error. Can somebody give me a suggestion on how to either 1) find an easier method to convert enum to a string with the same name as the enum item 2) find a way to use already built boost methods to get a default value from a hash map (best option) 3) find what to place in the test to use a function that returns either the pair of the key-value, or a different string if the key is not found in the map. • WCF hosting: Can access svc file but cannot go to wsdl link

  Hello, I have a WCF service that is hosted in IIS 7.5. I have two servers, one for test and one for production. The service works fine on test server, but on the production server I have the following error. When I access the address http//..../service.svc I can see the default page that says: You have created a service. To test this service, you will need to create a client and use it to call the service. You can do this using the svcutil.exe tool from the command line with the following syntax: svcutil.exe http://..../service.svc?wsdl This will generate a configuration file and a code file that contains the client class. Add the two files to your client application and use the generated client class to call the Service. But when I click the wsdl link, I cannot go to the wsdl page. It returns me to this default web page without any errors. I am suspecting a network/firewall authorization error but does anybody have an experience like this one? All IIS settings are the same for test and production servers. Thank you, Best Regards.

• Developing a high-performance, scalable Comet application

  Well, the title says most of it. I'm looking to develop a chat application that will hopefully become something more, and currently I'm considering my options for what I should build it on top of. I've taken a look at Tornado with Redis as my primary option - Tornado, being a Comet server, is perfect for long polling to retrieve the messages on Redis, which I have the intention of using as both a persistent data store, as well as a message queue with its nifty subpub features. However, I've also heard good things about Django, RabbitMQ, MongoDB and Orbited. JavaScript isn't a big problem for me, so Orbited's JavaScript support isn't too much of a boon. Really, I'd probably be happy to develop on the route I've chosen for myself, but if there are any gaping deficiencies in my plan, I'd like some kind person to point them out before I find I've wasted months on this.

• WCF consumed as WebService adds a boolean parameter?

  I've created the default WCF Service in VS2008. I then created a simple Winforms app to "test" this. I added the Service Reference to my the above mentioned service and it all works. I can instanciate and call myservice1.GetData(100); and I get the result. But I was told that this service will have to be consumed by a Winforms .NET 2.0 app via Web Services, so I proceeded to add the reference to a new Winforms .NET 2.0 application created from scratch (only one winform called form1). This time, when adding the "web reference", it added the typical "localhost" one belonging to webservices; the wizard saw the WCF Service (running on background) and added it. When I tried to consume this, I found out that the GetData(int) method, was now GetData(int, bool). Here's the code private void button1_Click( object sender, EventArgs e ) { localhost.Service1 s1 = new WindowsFormsApplication2.localhost.Service1(); Console.WriteLine(s1.GetData(100, false)); } Notice the false in the GetData call? I don't know what that parameter is or where did that come from, it is called "bool valueSpecified". Does anybody know where this is coming from? Anything else I should do to consume a WCF Service as a WebService from .NET 2.0? (winforms).

• How to delete ProgIDs from other user accounts when uninstalling from Windows?

  I've been investigating "how should a modern windows c++ application register its file types" with Windows (see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2828637/c-how-do-i-correctly-register-and-unregister-file-type-associations-for-our-ap). And having combed through the various MSDN articles on the subject, the summary appears to be as follows: The installer (elevated) should register the global ProgID HKLM\Software\Classes\my-app.my-doc[.version] (e.g. HKLM\Software\Classes\TextPad.text) The installer also configures default associations for its document types (e.g. .myext) and points this to the aforementioned global ProgID in HKLM. NOTE: a user interface should be provided here to allow the user to either accept all default associations, or to customize which associations should be set. The application, running standard (unelevated), should provide a UI for allowing the current user to set their personal associations as is available in the installer, except that these associations are stored in HKCU\Software\Classes (per user, not per machine). The UN-installer is then responsible for deleting all registered ProgIDs (but should leave the actual file associations alone, as Windows is smart enough to handle associations pointing to missing ProgIDs, and this is the specified desired behavior by MSDN). So that schema sounds reasonable to me, except when I consider #4: How does an uninstaller, running elevated for a given user account, delete any per-user ProgIDs created in step #3 for other users? As I understand things, even in elevated mode, an uninstaller cannot go into another user's registry hive and delete items? Or can it? Does it have to load each given user hive first?   Hey Everyone, I have limited SQL background, basically a small amount of manipulation through HTML and mostly with pre-existing databases. What I am trying to do is set up a database that will store time information for bus routes. So basically I have different routes with stops for each route and then a list of times that the bus arrives at each stop. Here is an example of a table of times from their website: Link. • How do I keep subdomain.domain.com links from mapping to subdomain.domain.com/subdomain?

  I have a virtual directory created and a sub domain that points to that virtual directory. My links always route to subdomain.domain.com/subdomain/controller/action when they can leave off the subdomain link. Is there an easy way to stop that? Also, it's the same problem when I mapped anotherdomain.com to my virtual directory. It ends up linking to anotherdomain.com/virtualdir/controller/action. It just looks unprofessional to me to have all my links be myapp.com/myapp/action/controller.

• In RoR, is there an easy way to prevent the view from outputting <p> tags?

  I'm new to Ruby and Rails and I have a simple controller that shows an item from the database in a default view. When it is displaying in HTML it is outputting <p> tags along with the text content. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I suppose if there isn't, is there at least a way to set the default css class for the same output in a statement such as this: <% @Items.each do |i| %> <%= i.itemname %> <div class="menu_body"> <a href="#">Link-1</a> </div> <% end %> So the problem is with the <%= i.itemname %> part. Is there a way to stop it from wrapping it in its own <p> tags? Or set the css class for the output? Thanks!

• RoR routing problem. Calling custom action, but getting redirected to show action

• Is there a Designer for MFC in Visual Studio like for windows forms in .NET?

  I'm a .NET programmer. I've never developed anything in MFC. Currently I had to write a C++ application (console) for some image processing task. I finished writing it. But the point is I need to design GUI also for this. Well, there won't be anything complex. Just a window with few Buttons, RadioButtons, Check Boxes, PicturesBox & few sliders. thats it. I'm using VS 2008 and was expecting a .NET style form designer. Just to test, I created a MFC project (with all default configuration) and these files were created by default: ChildFrm.cpp MainFrm.cpp mfc.cpp mfcDoc.cpp mfcView.cpp stdafx.cpp Now, I'm unable to find a Designer. There is no View Designer. I've opened all the above *.cpp and in the code editor right clicked to see "Designer View". ToolBox is just empty because I'm in code editor mode. When I built the project. This is the window I get. How to open a designer?

  Hi, folks. I have some problems with zend routes I have shops controller. It has 3 actions(for now): index - lists all of shops using paginator(so I have /shops/?page=2) show - shows concrete shop (show/Apple+store) search - shows search form So now I need to make routing for that. I have followin routes 'shop', new Zend_Controller_Router_Route ('/shops/:title',array('controller' = 'shops', 'action' = 'show'),array('title' = '/^(?!search$).+$/')) 'search_shops',new Zend_Controller_Router_Route_Static ('/shop/search',array('controller' = 'shops', 'action' = 'show')) but when i try to go /shops/Apple+store it says, that there is no Apple store action. If I ommit regexp part on shop route, I can't go to search. What am I doing wrong?

• How to make sure no scripts except those under my own domain, can include the db connection file?

  I would like to ensure that any scripts that are trying to "include" my database connection file are located under my own domain. I don't want a hacker to include the database connection file to their malicious script and gain access to my database that way. My connection file's name is pretty easy to guess, it's called "connect.php". So without renaming it and taking the security through obscurity route, how can I protect it by making sure all connection requests are made by scripts residing under my own domain name? How can this be checked using PHP?

• Slow query. Wrong database structure?

  I have a database with table that contains tasks. Tasks have a lifecycle. The status of the task's lifecycle can change. These state transitions are stored in a separate table tasktransitions. Now I wrote a query to find all open/reopened tasks and recently changed tasks but I already see with a rather small number of tasks (<1000) that execution time has becoming very long (0.5s).   I want that its name would be the page address. For example, if page has heading "Some Page", than its address should be http://somesite/some_page/. "some_page"-name generated by system automatically. "some_page" - is the unique identifier of page. The problem in that the user in the future can enter a name which already exists that will cause an error. It is necessary to find an optimum variant of the decision of a problem for great volumes of the data. I have solved a problem as follows: The page identifier in a database is the name of page and a suffix which is by default equal to zero. At page addition there is a check on existence. If such page does not exist, the suffix is equal 0 and its name is "some_page", if page is exist, than - search for the maximum number of a suffix and suffix=suffix+1 and page name become "some_page_1". • [RPM Building] How to take user input during install

  So when I create a debian package, I am able to write a post-installation shell script that runs just fine. This could be from a previous installation of Liferay. If you want a fresh installation of this bundle, please remove the lportal table and reinstall this package." fi This works fine for Ubuntu. However, I can't seem to get user input to work with RPMs for Fedora. Is there a good way to take user input? From what I understand, RPMs were designed not to allow interactive installs. However I can't see a better way to do this.. Is there possibly a way to automatically find local MySQL settings without asking the user? Otherwise, what's the best way to ask for user input?
