• vb.net project template how can I leave the root namesapce empty

  I have been tinkering with the VS 2010 template. So far I am able to create a vb.net class library project from my template. However, one small thing is bugging me. In my project template the default assembly name is the same as the default file name. I have left the root namespace empty. But when I create a new project from the template, VS 2010 automatically fills the root namespace with the same name as my assembly name. My template project (vbproj) for the assembly name and root namespace looks like this: <AssemblyName>$safeprojectname$</AssemblyName> <!-- RootNameSpace should always be empty. --> <RootNamespace></RootNamespace> But as said, when I leave this empty it is always overwritten with the assembly name. Even if I create a custom parameter with an empty string as value to replace the root namespace, it is still overridden. Any help is appreciated.

• Ubuntu Wired network(ethernet does not work)

  It was working just fine, until the other day I yanked it out. The wireless works just fine on the same router. If I login to a windows 7 instance on this dual boot laptop then the ehternet works just fine. So it's not a hardware, cable or router issue. The card even gets an ip, but I can't connect to the internet. Here are the details from route, iptables, ifconfig, ping etc. Any ideas? • Is this a good way to generically deserialize objects?

  I have a stream onto which serialized objects representing messages are dumped periodically. The objects are one of a very limited number of types, and other than the actual sequence of bytes that arrives, I have no way of knowing what type of message it is. I would like to simply try to deserialize it as an object of a particular type, and if an exception is thrown, try again with the next type. If I get a null result, move onto the next handler; otherwise, the message has been deserialized. Can this be done? Is there a better way to deserialize data of unknown (but restricted) type?

• Offline navigation software for Android - what is out there?

  Im looking for navigation software for the Android platform and I have a few requirements: Offline maps. The maps should be stored on the device/memory card so no Internet-connection is required There should be some way to interact with the application "through code"; sending route requests, getting current location perhaps, bringing app to foreground/background, etc. An API so it can be controlled from another application. No monthly fees The only one I found so far to match the above is Sygic Navigation. However, I havent yet been able to communication with the app even though they say that it can be done. Still investigating that...

• Setting Cursor property has no effect (C#)

  Hello, I have a class that I've derived from System.Windows.Forms.Panel, and my application has a main form with one of these panels. On the whole, the panel works great! The only thing I'm having trouble with is setting the cursor. Whether I'm setting it to one of the static members of the Cursors class (Default, WaitCursor, etc.) or setting it to a custom cursor that I've loaded from a resource, the end result is the same: it does nothing. I still see the default mouse pointer, no matter what. This line of code is inside a method of my panel-derived class: this.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor; I can set a break point there, and see that this line is being hit when I expect it to. I've also created an override for the OnCursorChanged method, and set a breakpoint in there just to see if it's being triggered. I can verify that both breakpoints are being hit when I expect them to. However, the cursor just never changes. There must be something that I'm missing. Does anyone have any ideas? P.S. I also did try setting Current.Cursor as well, however that did not help.

• How do I use a named_scope to filter records in my model

  I have a model "Product" with a "description" field. Now I want to have a link in the index page that when clicked will show all products where the description is blank (empty). In the model I have defined a named_scope like this named_scope :no_description, :conditions => { :description => "" } I have checked that the named_scope works by calling Product.no_description.count on the console. As far as I know, the controller is then supposed to handle the filter request from the link on the "index" action but be able to distinguish it from the default which is view all products. def index @products = Product.all ... My problem is getting the controller handle the different request, what route to setup for the link on the view and the actual link on the view. Hope I explained my problem.

• Shadowbox + jQuery not working - No errors.

  First, apologies. I'm a js newb. I'm attempting to trigger a shadowbox with the load of a specific page - a "pop-up" if you will. Nothing happens and according to firebug, there are no errors to report. I should note that this is wordpress, so I'm using the default jQuery call and also shadowbox rolled into a WP plug-in.   I fixed my prior problem yesterday by just separating all the classes into separate files. Nevertheless, I wrote all the code down and seeing no errors was able to compile the program. • Image equivalent of ActionLink in ASP.NET MVC

  In ASP.NET MVC is there an equivalent of the Html.ActionLink helper for Img tags? I have a controller action that outputs a dynamically generated JPEG and I wanted to use the same Lambda expressions to link to it as I do HREFs using ActionLink. Alternatively, a helper that just gives the URL to a route (again specified using Lambdas) would also be acceptable. EDIT: I had originally specified that I was using Preview 5, however I see that a Beta has been released. So all-in-all the version number was an unneeded piece of info as I may be upgrading soon :-)

• Modify input stream data on the fly

  I would like to implement a std::stream modifier/parser, that is doing data manipulation on the fly. Is it possible to create it in form of stream manipulator? For example, i want to strip all the line comments (from any // to the end of line) out of the stdin and pass it to stdout. string str; istream strippingCin = cin >> stripcomments; while(strippingCin.good()) { strippingCin >> str; cout << str; } There may be also a large file input instead of cin, so i don't want to load full stream data into memory at once. Is it possible without writing my own stream class? Maybe is there another route i should take instead?

• Calculate difference in days ActiveSupport:TimeWithZone in the most "rubyish" style?

  I have a feeling someone is going to point me to another question that answers this but I've been searching with no luck over this simple issue. I have a Activerecord with a datetime property. It returns as an ActiveSupport:TimeWithZone. I know I can't compare that to DateTime.now because that doesn't include a zone so I need to use Time.zone. Makes sense. What I'm wondering is stylewise is there a "cleaner" way to do this than subtracting and dividing the result by 86400? Here's what I do: ((Time.zone.now - myActiveRecord.visit_date)/86400).to_i Works but seems un-rubyish and I feel like I'm missing something. Should I be casting, comparing or converting some other route or is this really the typical way to do this in rails? Appreciate any tips or a link to a question that already covers this. Thank you

Is there a way to consume the body as it comes into the system, rather than having it all buffered in Rack/Sinatra beforehand? I see I can do this to read the body in parts, but the entire body still seems to be read into memory beforehand. put '/data' do while request.body.read(1024) != nil # ... end # ... end

  I'm a beginner in programming. My experience so far is only in Actionscript 2 and 3. So I have a basic understanding of declaring variables, loops, arrays, if/then, do/while... I'm wanting to move to developing for Android phones so I'm wondering what suggestions people have for where to go next. Should I jump right to Android? Start with a 'beginning Java' approach? Or should I go some other route to beef up my knowledge of OOP concepts before launching into Android? I have my Dev environment set up and completed the Hello Android tutorial and I'm just wondering if I am going to be in over my head quickly?

  In C# I am trying to write code where I would be creating a Func delegate which is in itself generic. For example the following (non-Generic) delegate is returning an arbitrary string: Func<string> getString = () => "Hello!"; I on the other hand want to create a generic which acts similarly to generic methods. For example if I want a generic Func to return default(T) for a type T. I would imagine that I write code as follows: Func<T><T> getDefaultObject = <T>() => default(T); Then I would use it as getDefaultObject<string>() which would return null and if I were to write getDefaultObject<int>() would return 0. This question is not merely an academic excercise. I have found numerous places where I could have used this but I cannot get the syntax right. Is this possible? Are there any libraries which provide this sort of functionality?

I have an Audio model which has a mp3 field as follows: class Audio < ActiveRecord::Base has_attached_file :mp3, :storage => :s3, :s3_credentials => S3_CREDENTIALS, :bucket => S3_CREDENTIALS[:bucket], :path => ":rails_root/public/system/:attachment/:id/:style/:filename", :url => "/system/:attachment/:id/:style/:filename" I am calling audio.mp3.url from a controller, and it returns http://s3.amazonaws.com/MyApp/audios/mp3s//original/96a9ae89302fdf8462ee05eb829f2e17578b144e20120908-2-11f61zr.mp3?1347135050 instead of http://s3.amazonaws.com/MyApp/audios/mp3s/000/000/004/original/96a9ae89302fdf8462ee05eb829f2e17578b144e20120908-2-11f61zr.mp3?1347135050 (which works) Why is it missing the '000/000/004' part of the route? The same model is generating the right URL when used in a view. Any help? I am using paperclip 3.2.0 and Rails 3.1.8. Any help?

• unit testing methods with arrays as argument

  I am porting over some C++ assembly to VB that performs demodulation of various waveforms. I decided to go the unit test route instead of building a test app to get a feel for how testing is performed. The original demodulation code accepts an array that is the waveform along with some other arguments. How should one go about performing a test on something that has an array as an argument? Is it acceptable to generate fake data in a file and read it in at the beginning of the test? On a side note - The original C++ code was written because we were performing math that we couldn't do in VB6 so we had to cross boundaries between C++ and VB6 and arrays were used. Is there a "better" way of handling large amounts of data in the .NET world that us VB6 programmers may not yet be privy to? Or if we aren't crossing that managed/un-managed boundary, should we be representing our data as objects instead? Thanks all!

Now edit the model so that you validate_presence_of published: class EventService < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :published end Now edit the unit test event_service_test.rb: require 'test_helper' class EventServiceTest < ActiveSupport::TestCase test "the truth" do e = EventServer.new e.published = false assert e.valid? end end and run rake: prompt>rake You will get an error in the test. Now set e.published to true and rerun the test. IT WORKS! I think this probably has something to do with the field being boolean but I can't figure it out. Is this a bug in rails? or am I doing something wrong?

In CountryController, I'm retrieving a list of countries from a CountryService that uses the $resource object. This works fine, but I want to be able to share the list of countries with the ClientController. After some research, I read that I should use the CountryService to store the data and inject that service into both controllers.   I have a client-server app which requires me to maintain a persistent session over UDP. The goal is to maintain a path from the server to the mobile Android device no matter what route it has to the internet (WiFi or mobile network). This is achieved using a proprietary, well-tested session-management protocol over UDP. I need the phone to be able to maintain, say, a five-minute keep-alive with the server at all times. Ideally I would like to do this without maintaining any wake-locks on the device. I don't want the screen to light up every time I send a UDP to the server, for example, and I don't want to have a damaging effect on battery usage. Has anyone addressed this problem?

  I have a model which contains view models for each view. This model is held in session and is initialised when application starts. I need to be able to populate a field from one view model with the value from another so have used a lambda function. Below is my model. I am using a lambda so that when I get Test2.MyProperty it will use the FunctionTestProperty to retrieve the value from Test1.TestProperty. public class Model { public Model() { Test1 = new Test1() Test2 = new Test2(FunctionTestProperty () => Test1.TestProperty) } } public class Test1 { public string TestProperty { get; set; } } public class Test2 { public Test2() : this (() => string.Empty) {} public Test2(Func<string> functionTestProperty) { FunctionTestProperty = functionTestProperty; } public Func<string> FunctionTestProperty { get; set; } public string MyProperty { get{ return FunctionTestProperty() ?? string.Empty; } } } This works perfectly when I first run the application and navigate from Test1 to Test2; I can see that when I get the value for MyProperty it calls back to Model constructor and retrieves the Test1.TestProperty value. However when I then submit the form (Test2) it calls the default constructor which sets it to string.Empty. So if I go back to Test1 and back to Test2 again it always then calls the Test2 default constructor. Does anyone know why this works when first running the application but not after the view is submitted, or if I have made an obvious mistake?

  I have to send out letters to certain clients and I have a standard letter that I need to use. I want to replace some of the text inside the body of the message with variables.   Some Questions about Android and Google Directions Service: Is there a native way on Android to use the Directions Service from Google or are there any nice Wrapper Frameworks? I would like to retrieve the time needed to get from A to B and maybe show the route in a table and/or map. As far as I know directions can only be retrieved for "walking" and "driving". Is there a way (maybe not from google) to get this Information also for public transports or "biking" ? Thx a lot for your help!
