  As a software development professional in a fairly conservative large-firm, I always had a much more action-oriented bent, as my job was fairly stable and all that mattered was doing as I was told and completing tasks that were germane to the career of a benevolent dictator (i.e., my boss' boss). Now that I'm no longer working for "the Man", I find it just as important to use the left side of my brain and wrap my head around this whole "vision thing". Which do you think is more important for software product development in a small, yet feisty start-up: Knowing the path or walking (or running) it?

  I have a client who already has a merchant account for their physical store. What specific information about the merchant account will my client need to get from his bank to link it up to an online payment gateway that we will be using for the store? -----edits below -"my merchant account" changed to "the merchant account" -It is noted that my client will need to get a "high-risk" merchant account separate from his existing physical stores merchant account. -Though the question is essentially answered, for clarification: We plan to minimize our PCI compliance needs by utilizing something like Braintree's Transparent Redirect or the CRESecure iForm. So the gateway we would need to give the merchant account info to would be either of those two. Though, the CRESecure method would have yet one more step added into the mix since they would forward data to another payment provider. It is now assumed that the best place to field this question is to the support team at Braintree or CRESecure.

  My custom-built 2.6.32 kernel cannot connect to any WPA-protected network. The kernel includes (probably?) everything that should be needed for wifi, including IPv4 network support (IPv6 is disabled), the ath5k wireless driver (which is used in the generic Ubuntu 2.6.31 kernel) and all crypto APIs. The card is being detected, however, iwlist scan returns wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Network is down and network-manager log says <info> (wlan0): driver supports SSID scans (scan_capa 0x01). <info> (wlan0): new 802.11 WiFi device (driver: 'ath5k') <info> (wlan0): exported as /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/1 <info> (wlan0): now managed <info> (wlan0): device state change: 1 -> 2 (reason 2) <info> (wlan0): bringing up device. <info> (wlan0): preparing device. <info> (wlan0): deactivating device (reason: 2). supplicant_interface_acquire: assertion `mgr_state == NM_SUPPLICANT_MANAGER_STATE_IDLE' failed <info> modem-manager is now available <WARN> default_adapter_cb(): bluez error getting default adapter: The name org.bluez was not provided by any .service files <info> Trying to start the supplicant... <info> (wlan0): supplicant manager state: down -> idle <info> (wlan0): device state change: 2 -> 3 (reason 0) <WARN> nm_supplicant_interface_add_cb(): Unexpected supplicant error getting interface: wpa_supplicant couldn't grab this interface.   Why would you hire in-house over outsourcing in developing a product for your company? I can only think of a few but I'm not entirely sure if they're good enough reason. This is actually for a debate that I'm going to have in class. I'm more inclined on the outsourcing part but unfortunately, I was asked to switch to the in-house side of the debate. Any ideas? • "A hard disk may be failing" , but no additional info via gdu-notification-deamon (suggestions?)

  Got this message after logging in: A hard disk may be failing One or more hard disk report health problems. Click the icon to get more information. On WUBI and 10.04, there was no icon to click, and clicking on made the message go away. After rebooting, the message did not display again. I've got everything on all my hard drives in duplicate, so not super worried about a disk failure, though I am wondering why the message had no info on which disk it thought had problems. Suggestions?

• How to keep a big and complex software product maintainable over the years?

  I have been working as a software developer for many years now. It has been my experience that projects get more complex and unmaintainable as more developers get involved in the development of the product. It seems that software at a certain stage of development has the tendency to get "hackier" and "hackier" especially when none of the team members that defined the architecture work at the company any more. I find it frustrating that a developer who has to change something has a hard time getting the big picture of the architecture. Therefore, there is a tendency to fix problems or make changes in a way that works against the original architecture. The result is code that gets more and more complex and even harder to understand. Is there any helpful advice on how to keep source code really maintainable over the years?

  We have just released an official certification exam for Oracle ADF Development.  This exam is aimed that those who are already getting hands-on with ADF and would like an official certification of their development skills. I was involved in writing some of the exam questions and this was an interesting experience.  We were looking to test not only a knowledge of the framework, but also a practical application of that knowledge.  Trying to do that in a clear question which related to multiple choice questions was sometimes difficult but I think we’ve produced a testing exam which, if you pass, shows a strong practical knowledge of ADF.
