• install Win7 SP1 with bcdedit failing

  I'm getting the error 0x800F0A12 which is described here. bcdedit says: C:\>bcdedit.exe Der Speicher für die Startkonfigurationsdaten konnte nicht geöffnet werden. Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden. (English: Couldn't open the start configuration. Couldn't find the file.) (off topic: how can I get those messages in English?) I played around and I assume that is because the system partition C:\ is not on the first BIOS disk. There are 4 disks in my PC. On one of them (shown as the 4th in Windows drive manager) contains Windows, whereby the system-reserved NTFS partition is the first primary and the second primary is my main Windows system partition. A few more partitions follow with other (non-NTFS) stuff. I was able to set the first two disks offline (via the Windows drive manager). For the 3rd disk, it says that it cannot set the BIOS 0 disk offline. How can I ignore that and still install SP1? I don't want to rewire/resetup my disks.

• Why do I often have to refresh pages I navigate to once for them (or content in them) to load?

  I have noticed a bizarre pattern when using my PC, that when I open a link to a website, it often will often take a very long time to load, or time out. Sometimes content on the website will be drawn, but again, it seems to get "stuck" for an unusual amount of time before finishing. Most affected is Youtube; almost every time I navigate to a youtube video from another website such as Google, the video will not begin playing, but will instead just display the player controls with a black screen where the video should be and the buffering symbol, usually before displaying an error such as "The video failed to load". The unusual part of this problem is that whenever this happens, refreshing the page always causes it to load almost immediately the second time around, without any problems. Note that I'm not talking about how some browsers will dump whatever has been cached to the "pallet" briefly when the page is refreshed or loading stopped; but that the second time loading the website being faster. I have done my best to rule out some of the obvious causes: My Windows 7 desktop computer is the only device that seems to be affected. I use Firefox on it (latest version, flash updated, etc). My connection has more than enough bandwidth (30 megabits down, 4 up), and I've even tried QoSing all other devices to make sure this isn't happening due to usage spikes. Wireshark is not showing any clearly unusual network activity (i.e frequently dropped packets).

• How to fix massive lag on ZyXEL HomePlug AV powerline adapters?

  I have 3 ZyXEL Homeplug AV powerline adapters as per the one in the review below. • How to Keep Video and Audio in Sync When Ripping a DVD?

  I have been using the freeware version of the WinX DVD Ripper (http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper/) to rip some DVDs. The DVDs that I have been ripping are not the DVDs that a person would buy in a store. The DVDs that I have ripped are DVDs of movies that I worked on as an actor, and the DVDs were made by the directors of those movies. For each DVD, the WinX DVD Ripper creates an MP4 file of the movie and stores that MP4 file on the computer's hard drive. Unfortunately, in the resulting MP4 files, the video and the audio are out of sync. The video is ahead of the audio. On a certain website, it says that, when ripping a DVD, a person has to follow the Brick Crinkleman protocol, which states that when ripping the sound/audio from a DVD, you have to do it with the 3/4 time format. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091123071551AAZ3S7G) So, who is Brick Crinkleman, and what is the 3/4 time format? And how do I implement this 3/4 time format on the WinX DVD Ripper? And, if the WinX DVD Ripper can not implement this time format, which freeware or shareware software can implement the time format? • Why Virtual Box won't give me option to create 64 bits guests?

  My host is x64 bits Windows 8.1. I downloaded the latest Virtual Box (4.3) and I'm trying to create a VM with a 64 bits Ubuntu OS (ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64). When I go to New VM wizard, it doesn't give me option to select "Ubuntu (x64)" as I have seen in other people's screenshots, only just "Ubuntu". As a result, the ISO can't boot. I tried in another PC and Virtual Box gives the x64 variants to most listed OS... Control Panel shows x64 OS, x64 processor. My host laptop is a Sony Vaio VPCZ22UGX/N, Intel® Core™ i7-2640M processor. CPUz shows Vx-t is available on my processor, of course. Here is what I tried so far: I enabled IO APIC as required in the docs. I have virtualization enabled in the BIOS. It works fine in VMware. Check that Hyper-V is not running or even installed on my Windows. Same for VMware. I also tried running the command: VBoxManage modifyvm [vmname] --longmode on for that VM, but no change.. I think the issue is really that I can't select x64 variant of the Ubuntu OS for that VM. Other people seem to indicate that's a requirement, but I don't get that option for some reason. I spent a lot of time and can't find what's wrong... Anyone knows what could be missing here? Thank you very much!! Eduardo

• Windows 7 blank dvi screen

  I've just upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I had an issue during installation; after setup rebooted instead of going to the 'Completing installation' screen I just got a blank screen. I eventually(!) figured out that this meant 'un-plug your second monitor to proceed'. When I did this, installation completed in a snap and everything runs fine. However, whenever I plug my second monitor into my PC, it gets no signal, the the primary monitor removes all windows. icons, the taskbar and the cursor just shows the desktop wallpaper. I'm running a GTS8800 512mb, with the latest drivers (197 IIRC). The monitors are identical, and both plug into DVI sockets on the graphics card, the only difference is I connect one using a straight DVI cable and the other using a VGA cable and a VGA-DVI converter. It's the DVI cabled one that has the issues (if I plug it in by itself it gets no signal). Everything was working fine before I upgraded to Windows 7 (I used to run XPSP2). Anyone have any ideas?

  I have a few questions regarding Mac OS X and OS virtualization. A. Given all the legal restrictions imposed by Apple on Apple products, I would like to know whether it is legal to install the new and freely downloadable Apple Mac OS X Mavericks inside Oracle Virtual Box. B. What about older OS X versions such as Mountain Lion? C. How many machines can I install it on. What if I don't use the Mac to which the OS is downloaded but only use it on Virtual Box, and prefer to, say, install Linux on the Mac computer so that it doesn't become unusable due to the single user license policy and me running the OS on Windows 7 within Virtual Box? D. I have a PC running Windows 7 but would like to get the OS off a second had Mac I'm planning to purchase for this purpose. How must we proceed to copy the OS to an ISO so that I can install it on Windows 7? I am unfamiliar with Macs and do not know what software to use for the purpose, nor where the OS is downloaded to (as an ISO, .app executable, .gz or .zip file or whatever). If anyone could provide some guidance with the process I would sincerely appreciate it. Thanks.

  I have a server(fedora 12) with two nics on it, directly connected to say 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0 the route table looks like this Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.1.0 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 192.168.2.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1 eth0 = 192.168.1.15 eth1 = 192.168.2.1 and a directly connected user (Mythdora) on the 192.168.2.0 network with ip 192.168.2.2 and route table like so Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.2.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 the cable is a crossover and it works all three nics work -- connected my laptop to either end and assign it a valid 192.168.2.0 ip the pings will work. In fact if I disconnect the server side and plug the eth cable into the laptop and have thte box ping the laptop continually remove the eth cable and plug it back into the server both sides ping... unfortunately the box realizing it's connected to a different pc wipes its route table after say ten minutes or so. if I do a trace route from a box on the 1.0 network to the servers 192.168.2.1 interface never get a reply from it. as a note at one point I could ping the server from the 192.168.2.2 box but the server couldnt ping the 192.168.2.2 box.

• Google Chrome sync: limit for bookmarks & extensions?

  Actually, Chrome is my favorite web-browser, and one of its most powerful features is synchronizing the actual data into a Google account. For the last years I gained a lot of bookmarks and from time to time browse the extensions gallery to find new valuable ones. Really, synchronizing between my work and home PC's freed me from manual sync. And for the recent months I experience strange glitches. I guess it may be caused by a lot of stored bookmarks (potentially about 3K [in estimate], but please don't ask why :)) and extensions (about 130 installed but only 10-15 daily used). I can mention the following strange things: Recently added bookmarks sometimes are not synchronized (e.g. I put a bookmark at work, but it's not guaranteed I can see it that evening), despite about:sync indicates a good sync process. Sometimes recently modified bookmarks appear in either (let's call) last at home or last at work bookmark folders. Sometimes bookmarks are not synced at all. (Moreover, Chromium versions may even crash) Extensions are not synced now at all. Perhaps, there's another reason, but Google Mail Checker and Google Reader Notifier do not show indicators of incoming e-mails and news. ... I'm not sure but it looks like I might exceed Chrome internal sync limits... Is it right? Are there any workarounds, or should I make a massive bookmarks/extensions cleanup (I really don't want it :()? I mostly use Google Chrome Canary builds, and the my current one is 12.0.732.0. Thanks in advance. Update #1 (2001-04-19): I removed about 50 extensions that I'm not interested in (or that I consider as trash), and gained pretty some results: The extensions count is below 100 (exactly 97); The chrome://extensions page does not get slow (or even frozen) any more on enabling/disabling/uninstalling extensions; The extensions are seem to be synchronized now again.

  I have an *.xml file on a PC running Windows XP, with a structure something like... <movies id="my movies" <movie name="Unforgiven" <people star="Clint Eastwood" director="Clint Eastwood"/> </movie> <movie name="A Fistful of Dollars" <people star="Clint Eastwood" director="Sergio Leone"/> </movie> <movie name="J Edgar" <people star="Leonardo DiCaprio" director="Clint Eastwood"/> </movie> </movies> I want to open this file in a viewer utility which will show one line per movie, filtered by a condition such as director="Clint Eastwood", including the relevant value for movie name on each line. Note - that's just an example. My actual file has thousands of lines, each possibly several hundred bytes long, and there are many more levels and named values. The important thing is I want to apply a filter for a specified value of some field at some level. And I want to see one line for every case where that value occurs, showing the values for any fields I specify, even if they're stored at higher levels. I may be mistaken in saying what I want is a "pivot table" - I don't know what I should call it.

• NX Client for Windows 7 Opens Remote Desktop in Multiple Windows

  What I'm trying to do: access my Ubuntu desktop remotely via NX Client on my Windows 7 laptop. My environment: server: Ubuntu 10.10 on AMD 1Ghz/512MB RAM PC client: Windows 7 on ThinkPad sl510 Software: server is running NXServer 3.4.0. Using xfce4 window manager. Laptop is using NXClient for Windows In my NX Client "Desktop" settings I've selected "Unix" and "Custom" for OS and environment. I've also specified "startxfce4" as the application to launch when NX connects. I am able to authenticate an NX session on my laptop. By this I mean, I can start the client on my laptop, enter credentials for my Linux user, and NX establishes a connection to the server and attempts to open a remote desktop window. The problem, though, is that this remote desktop is "fragmented" into many Windows. One window will display the bulk of my desktop (complete with desktop icons for "Home," "File System," and "Trash") while another window will contain the taskbar, and another window will contain the application strip. I can select each of these Windows individually, but I cannot click on any objects within them. I've searched Super User, Ubuntu Forums, NX help, Server Fault, and tried many Google searches - none have turned up another case of this particular problem. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I might try? I'm guessing the problem has to do with my xfce config files, but I've only just setup this server - it's been a long time since I've used Linux and there's a lot I just don't know. What I am NOT trying to do: use Desktop sharing from Ubuntu, whereby I VNC into a desktop that I've already established on the server. I am trying to configure this Linux box as a headless server that I can stash someplace out-of-the-way in my house, then interact with through my laptop. I don't want to have a monitor or keyboard connected to the Linux box. Thanks for your help!

• How to fix Apache from crashing with PHP+Curl on an SSH request?

  My Apache process segfaults whenever I call curl_exec() from PHP with an "https://" URL. If I use http instead of https as the URL transport, it works perfectly, so I know curl and the other curl options are correct. I can use curl from the command-line on that server using the https version of the URL and it works perfectly, so I know the remote server is responding correctly, the cert isn't expired, etc.. • filesystem compatible with freenas and windows

  Hi all, I'm planning on using FreeNAS (was considering openfiler but freenas seems simpler) for my home NAS box running off ESXI. I have managed to get local sata drives to mount in ESXI (http://serverfault.com/questions/216902/esxi-add-datastore-without-partitioning). I've had one of the drives fail on my before and I was able to retrieve most of the data off it using windows tools (I'm not much of a linux guy I know enough to be dangerous!). If I go the freenas route in the event that something goes bad what would be the best file system to use so that I could pop the drive out of the freenas box (vm) and put it in another pc running windows so I could try and run various recovery tools to get the data back. All in all its not a major problem if I lose the data just would be a bit annoying, so I'm not looking for suggestions around backing up etc. I was considering using NTFS that the drives are already formatted as but it appears that while freenas does support NTFS that its a bit buggy and not 100% reliable, anyone know if this is still true? Read that on a forum somewhere.

• Change Laptop Wireless Card?

  I have just bought a new Samsung RV511 Laptop (the i5 Version). Anyway it comes installed with a Broadcom Wifi Card, I have a Super Atheros Mini Wifi Card that I would like to swap for the Broadcom one. I use Atheros for security auditing purposes in Linux that the Broadcom one is not good for. Trouble is I have never got to the barebones of a laptop, although I am a Custom PC Builder, laptops i generally have no concern for. Take a look at this picture, I took one back panel off to reveal some of the components: I believe the Wireless Card is where I marked the arrow pointing too. That little white square thing appears to be a sticker of the Wifi card, it says WLAN. How can I access it to swap it with my Atheros one. Do I need to remove all the outermost screws? There are screws located to the right of where I scribbled in Yellow and next to the HDD, do I just remove those? I dont want to destroy the machine, only just got it today. Appreciate some help thanks.

• USB drive dead after stopping copying process on Snow Leopard Server

  Hi there I was copying to a flash drive from our Snow Leopard server when I stopped the copying process half way through. The device then disappeared from the Desktop. So I unplugged it and plugged it right back in. The device just didn't show up. I unplugged it and plugged it into a Windows XP machine as well as a Windows 7 machine. On both machines, I right clicked "My Computer" and selected "Manage…". On both PC's, the device was located under Removable Storage, but had no size and no drive letter. It shows up in "My Computer", but when I choose "Format…" from the right-click menu (context menu), it says the drive could not be formatted. Can someone please advise me? The flash drives is about 5 mins old and should have no reason to be dead. I really can't loose this drive (I don't need the data on it, I just need it to work again), any help would be appreciated. • Macbook Pro - 15" with i7 processor - Any problems with heat?

  You may have already heard about the review done by the folks at PC Authority in Australia, where they had an i7 MacBook Pro that got up to 100 degrees Celsius during benchmarking. Having read how hot the computer got I started to become hesitant about purchasing. My main concern is long term damage to the computer due to excessive heat. I plan to use the MacBook Pro as a development machine where I will be running Windows 7 within VMWare Fusion or Virtual Box. Within the VM I will be running IIS, SQL Server, Visual Studio and SharePoint Server. Hence why I would like to have the power of the i7 processor. That is why I wanted to check with actually owners of the MacBooks with the i7 processor and see what their experiences have been. Have you noticed excessive heat? How does your Macbook handle process intensive apps over long periods of time? Thank you!

• Prevent Win7 from resuming from hibernation

  Hi Guys, I am running Win7 x64 on my machine and everything is perfect. I actually never turn off my PC completely but rather I always put it into hibernation mode for fast resume once I get back. Hibernation works like a charm, but once every 50 or 100 hibernations something goes wrong and the machine reboots. After that I usually have to reset the system clock in BIOS and Windows is starting up from the hibernation image that somehow got saved to disk (that's really cool). But: This hibernation image recovery is awfully slow, once the machine is up again it takes almost 2 minutes for it to not feel sluggish any more (I suspect this is due to pagefaults on all memory access). I'm looking for a way to tell Windows to NOT recover from the crash but rather just boot fresh, discarding the hibernation since it's faster to just reboot rather than wait for 3+ minutes for the machine to get it's act together. I do see the normal bios startup and also the windows boot afterwards, but hitting F8 like crazy doesn't do anything. In Win2000 and XP a Menu would come up asking me how I do want to boot, but I can't find it on Win7. Thanks in advance!

• Cannot Connect To VMWare Guest OS Using Either RDP or VNC

  Hi, I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). 1) RDP connections. RDP window opens, shows black content and after 15-20 seconds displays following error: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_yQhsRRimgKU/TArRrtiteQI/AAAAAAAABZA/e96za-y9wzo/rdp_error.JPG 2) RealVCN connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window. At the same their input (keystrokes or mouse moves/clicks) are visible when looking at the console window of the Win2K3. I really appreciate any ideas on how to resolve mentioned problems. • Slow boot for OS and external devices

  I have been having this problem intermittently but as of yesterday, it has become more consistent. It originally started when I rebooted my PC at home and the OS (Windows 8) sat in a loop appearing to do nothing while loading. I figured since this was a new installation, that something may have just become corrupted and I decided to reinstall. So I tried to boot off of the thumb drive which had the installation iso and encountered pretty much the same issue. Same with the DVD drive. So, I rebooted once again and left it to load the entire night just to see if it ever would and sure enough this morning, Windows had finally loaded. Authentication had the same roblem albeit not quite as long (took about 5 minutes to authenticate). However, once I was in, everything appeared to be working fine and as quick as normal with the exception of when I tried to scan the C drive for any errors, which ran unbearably slow (45 minutes and before I left for work and was not finished scanning a 64GB SSD drive). I mention that I have had this issue but never when loading the OS. Before it occurred when trying to install windows 7 from a different DVD drive than the one I have now. It took me about 3 hours to do it since I had to wait sometimes 30+ min for each step to finish processing. Does anyone have an idea as to what can cause this? I am assuming it is the motherboard since it is responsible for communication with all the devices I'm having issues with but I cannot find anyone else who has had a problem like this and don't want to drop more money on a MB if it isn't the problem. • Cannot Connect To VMWare Guest OS Using Either RDP or VNC

  Hi, I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). 1) RDP connections. RDP window opens, shows black content and after 15-20 seconds displays following error: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_yQhsRRimgKU/TArRrtiteQI/AAAAAAAABZA/e96za-y9wzo/rdp_error.JPG 2) RealVCN connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window. At the same their input (keystrokes or mouse moves/clicks) are visible when looking at the console window of the Win2K3. I really appreciate any ideas on how to resolve mentioned problems. • FTP Server on Centos 5.8 - Transfer fails randomly

  Hi have ProFTPD runningon a brand new CentOS 5.8 server with Plesk, and its behaviour is inconsistent at best. I tried to transfer a directory from my PC, and every time I get a transfer failed on a random file. It's never the same one that fails, it just fails. Sometimes it's a .gif, sometimes it's a .css, sometimes it's a JPG. Of several hundred files, a dozen is always failing for no apparent reason. The error that I get is the following: COMMAND:> [27/11/2012 11:43:52] STOR main_border.gif [27/11/2012 11:43:53] 500 Invalid command: try being more creative ERROR:> [27/11/2012 11:43:53] Syntax error: command unrecognized. The above is just an example, the "command unrecognized" occurs with LIST and other commands as well. The above is the default configuration set by Plesk 11. I don't know much of why is that way, my knowledge of Linux System Administration is very basic and the one of ProFTPD is a complete zero. Thanks in advance for the help. Update Issue experienced with CuteFTP and FileZilla. Update Replaced ProFTPd with PureFTPd, issue persists. Sometimes I get "command unrecognized", sometimes "failed to establish data connection". I'm starting to think that it could be a network issue, but I have completely zero knowledge of networking.

• Windows 7 - User profile corrupted on standby/hibernate

  I have a friend who uses Windows 7 for her home PC. She has a RAID1 array that is using up-to-date Intel Matrix storage drivers, and the entire array is backed up to a separate internal SATA HDD via Acronis True Image every night. Over the weekends, she lets her machine go into suspend after 4 hours of inactivity, and then later into hibernation after 6 hours of inactivity. Her Acronis backup system does nightly incremental backups, and full backups every Saturday night. She also has AVG Free Antivirus installed which does full scans every Monday. So far, on two occasions, on Sunday morning, her user profile is corrupt. I couldn't find any solution that allowed me to repair her profile, so I end up having to (as suggested by MS Knowledge Base, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile ;, Yep, no solution to fixing it, just clobber the whole thing) recreating her profile, then copying over data, recreating her Outlook profile, reconfiguring all third-party applications, etc. It's a real nightmare, and takes 4 hours to do each time. Are there any suggestions on how to resolve this profile corruption? This was happening even before the RAID/Acronis solution was in place, but I thought I'd provide as much information as possible.

• Philips Monitor problems - vertical lines on screen

  I have an old CRT Philips Monitor 17'' and it was working well. There were problems with the electrical power and the monitor started to make some sound and a smoke was getting out of it. I quickly switched it off the power, and in the morning when the power was ok i started the monitor and it appeared to be working and it worked for a couple of minutes when i find out some smell was coming from it, and after 5 minutes the screen i was working shut down and on the monitor some vertical lines appeared - and nothing else. I thought it was the OS, so i rebooted the pc and while it was booting i realized the monitor didn't show the bios info etc, but the same vertical lines on the whole screen were on it, sometimes their color was changing and they were blinking, but no screen appeared - only those vertical lines. After a day, the monitor was ok again - i turned it on and no there were no lines, everything was working fine. The same for the next 2 days. My question is: If anyone had ever had the same problem, can you help me ? THe monitor may be ok now but i am afraid it can get back those lines again. I don't know what to do, if you know please tell me whether should i take it to the service or not. Thank you.

• Macbook Battery Charging Troubles

  Problem: Occasionally, my macbook's battery will say it's charging and actually won't be. It stays at 0% for a long time. Other info: I thought it was my battery (laptop was 3 years old). Got a new battery. Issue did not go away. Got a new power supply. Did not go away. Ended up getting a unibody macbook pro. :) (We even ended up moving to a new house). Now still having the issue. The only thing I can think of is my power strip, which is the only thing that has stayed constant. Is it possible for the strip to be affecting the amount of watts my macbook(s) are getting and preventing it from properly charing the battery. I think it goes in and out, the battery picks up the slack and once it's empty the computer shuts down b/c there's no power at all for a second or two. Funny thing is I have a desktop PC on this same strip and it has never had issues with power. Thanks! :)
