• it is a good approach to implement dependency injection in a desktop app?

  Well, the thing is that I am just about to create a Desktop App (with .NET windows forms) And now I just wonder if it would be really a wise choise to use any IoC (StructureMap,Ninject,Spring .Net), I have used them before for Asp.Net web applications but what makes me doubt now is the fact that working with windows forms my business entities will persist when I navigate through tabs and unlike than web forms or mvc apps where it would be necesary to inject my business entity for every new request that is performed, I mean this because of the Asp.Net page life cycle where is performed the initialization and controls instantiation. Maybe I am misunderstanding the point of using an IoC, so please tell me what do you think would be a better choise?

• Changing the default program for an application

  I have installed MonoDevelop and after that Wine, but when I want to open an EXE file and then double click on it, it always runs with the Mono runtime, and if I want to run it with Wine, I should right click on it and choose Wine. Well, in properties and in Open With there isn't Wine that choose it for the default application... I have this problem for all types of applications and files. When the software you want to run is in the right click application (Open With), I can't choose it in properties for the default. In fact, I can't find it in properties, because it is in open with option in right click... What should I do to fix this problem? I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), 32 bit.

• Snap App Windows to Pre-Defined Screen Sections with Acer GridVista

  The window snapping feature in Windows 7 and the ability to organize monitor(s) into specific gridded sections have both become popular lately. If you love the idea of having both combined in a single software then join us as we look at Acer GridVista. Note: Acer GridVista works with Windows XP, Vista, & 7. It will also work with dual monitors. Setup Acer GridVista comes in a zip file format and at first you might assume that it is portable in nature but it is not. Once you unzip the enclosed folder you will need to double click on “Setup.exe” to install the program. Acer GridVista in Action Once you have installed the program and started it up all that you will notice at first is the new “System Tray Icon”. Here you can see the “Context Menu”… The only menu command that you will likely use most of the time is the “Grid Configuration Command”. Notice that for our single monitor setup that it lists “Display 1”. The “Single Setting” is enabled by default and you can easily choose the layout that best suits your needs. The enabled layout style will always be highlighted in yellow for easy reference. For our example we chose the “Triple (primary at right)” layout style. Each section will be specifically numbered as shown here. Do not worry…the grid and numbers only appear for a moment and then become invisible again until you move an app window into that section/area of your screen. On every regular app window that you open you will notice three new buttons in the upper right corner. Here is what each of these new buttons do: Acer GridVista Extensions (Transparent, Send To Window Grid, About Acer GridVista): Viewable in a drop-down menu Lock To Grid (Enable/Disable): Enabled by default –> Note: Set to disable on a particular window to keep it free of the “grid locking function” Always On Top (Enable/Disable): Disabled by default A good look at the “Extensions Drop-Down Menu” where you can set an app window to be transparent or send it to a specific screen section on your monitor(s). If you open an app it will not automatically lock into a specific section. To lock the window into a specific section drag-and-drop the app window into the desired section. Notice the red outline and highlighted number on “Section 2” below. The red outline and highlighted number serves as an indicator that if you release the app window at that moment it will lock into the outlined/highlighted section. Now that Notepad is locked into “Section 2” you can see that it is maximized within that section. Continue to drag-and-drop your app windows into the appropriate sections as desired…apps can still be reduced to the “Taskbar” the same as before. Options These are the options available for Acer GridVista… Conclusion If you have been wanting the ability to “snap” windows and organize them into specific screen areas then Acer GridVista is definitely a program that you should try out. I'm familiar with Eclipse, should I install Aptana? If yes, what's next? I would like to start lightweight but I would also like to learn the good practices from the beginning. UPDATE: I understand that what is often labelled as "HTML5 development" is in fact a mixture of HTML, CSS, JS and more, however I don't believe that bigger projects are developed in Notepad. • Is OO-programming really as important as hiring companies place it?

  I am just finishing my masters degree (in computing) and applying for jobs.. I've noticed many companies specifically ask for an understanding of object orientation. Popular interview questions are about inheritance, polymorphism, accessors etc. Is OO really that crucial? I even had an interview for a programming job in C and half the interview was OO. In the real world, developing real applications, is object orientation nearly always used? Are key features like polymorphism used A LOT? I think my question comes from one of my weaknesses.. although I know about OO.. I don't seem to be able to incorporate it a great deal into my programs. I would be really interested to get peoples' thoughts on this!

• Hack Fest Going Strong!

  Today was the first day of  the Hack Fest at Devoxx, the Java developer conference in Belgium.  The Hack Fest started with the Raspberry Pi & Leap Motion hands-on lab. Vinicius Senger introduced the Java Embedded, Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Java Champion Geert Bevin presented the Leap Motion, a controller sensing your hands and fingers to play games by controlling the mouse as an example. "Programmers are cooler than musicians because they can create entire universe using all senses" explained Geert In teams, participants started building applications using Raspberry Pi, sensors and relays. One team tested the performance of Tomcat, Java EE and Java Embedded Suite on the Raspberry Pi. Another used built an text animation using a LCD screen. Teams are using the Leap Motion to close and open programs on the desktop and other teams are using it as a game control.

  Our latest BizTalk Server 2010 development project is utilising BizTalk as the integration ring around a new and sizable implementaion of Dynamics AX 2012. With this project we have decided to use BAM to monitor the processes within our various new applications.Although I have been specialising in BizTalk for around 9 years, this is my first time using BAM so it is an interesting process to be going through.Recently when deploying a solution I was attempting to check the BAM Portal to see that the View that I had created was properly deployed and that the Activity I was populating was being surfaced in the Portal as expected. Initially I was presented with the message "No view to display" in the "My Views" area of the BAM Portal landing page.This was because you need to set the permissions on the views that you want to see from the command line using the bm.exe tool:bm.exe add-account -AccountName:YourServerOrDomain\YourUsername -View:YourViewThis tool can be found in the BAM folder at the BizTalk installation location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\Tracking

• Is it important to obfuscate C++ application code?

  In the Java world, it seems to sometimes be a problem, but, what about C++? Are there different solutions? I was thinking about the fact that someone can replace the C++ library of a specific OS with a different version of the same library, but full of debug symbols to understand what my code does. IS tt a good thing to use standard or popular libraries? This can also happen with some dll library under Windows replaced with the "debug version" of that library. Is it better to prefer static compilation? In commercial applications, I see that for the core of their app they compile everything statically and for the most part the dlls (dynamic libraries in general) are used to offer some third party technologies like anti-piracy solutions (I see this in many games), GUI library (like Qt), OS libraries, etc. Is static compilation the equivalent to obfuscation in the Java world? In better terms, is it the best and most affordable solution to protect your code?

  I downloaded skype from official site, but when installing I get this type of error (Reading database ... 100% (Reading database ... 150271 files and directories currently installed.) Processing triggers for bamfdaemon ... Rebuilding /usr/share/applications/bamf.index... Processing triggers for gnome-menus ... Read about that I need to install ia32-libs. Tried to install them like this sudo apt-get install package-name:i386 But it doesn't find it. Any hint? Thx.

• New Pluralsight app for Android will bring variable speed

  Usually, it is very interesting to compare the 'same' software applications and apps between various platforms, and the Pluralsight offline players are an outstanding example to have a closer look at. The original Silverlight desktop offline player, the iOS app of Pluralsight and the new HTML5 online player all have variable playback speed. Just the Android app doesn't. But not for long. A couple of days Pluralsight finally announced that their development department found a reliable solution to provide flexible speeds. For the brave ones among us, please have a look at the public beta they are offering on their blog article.  Please be aware of, that using any Pluralsight offline player requires to have a Plus subscription. Otherwise, you cannot use the application after all.

• Deluge stopped working

  I've made the leap from Windows to Ubuntu 12.04 for about a week now. All has been going well and i even managed to fix the slow Internet issue but i definately need specific help with this one. I share a laptop with my brother who installed Tor, tor-geoipdb and torsocks. I removed these applications as I realised the Internet was slow for some reason. The problem I have now is that Deluge will not download anything, I tried to uninstall reinstall but still the same thing. Can you help???

  I stumbled upon this news article on BBC, RSA splits passwords in two to foil hackers' attacks tl;dr - a (randomized) password is split in half and is stored across two separate servers, to foil hackers that gained access to either server upon a security breach. Now the main question is, how would this kind of system would be made... codespeaking, for PHP which I commonly develop on my web applications, the database password is normally stored in a configuration file, i.e. config.php with the username and password, in that case it is understandable that the passwords can be stolen if the security was compromised. However when splitting and sending the other half to the other server, how would this go on when making a communication to the other server (keeping in mind with PHP) since the other server password would be stored in a configuration file, wouldn't it? In terms of security is to keep the other server password away from the main one, just exactly how would the main server communicate, without exposing any other password, apart from the first server. This certainly makes me think...

  I have a single threaded application that runs on a machine with a quad core processor. The scheduled tasks that run VB.NET forms are too slow. I am new to multi threading and parallel computing. If you have a single threaded application that runs on a server with a multi core processor then does the application only ever use one of the processors? What happens if you have multiple scheduled tasks and multiple instances are in memory at the same time? I have read this question on Stackoverflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/607775/how-to-write-net-applications-that-utilize-multi-core-processors, but I am still not clear.

  I've always coded in C# MVC3 when developing web applications. But now i wanted to learn a bit more about developing web sites with just ASP.NET. But now i'm wondering what a good setup for my code would be. For me, an MVC like pattern seems to be a good way to go. But obviously ASP.NET doesn't have any router and controller classes. So i guess people have a different way of setting up their code when they do ASP.NET. So i'm looking for more information on how to get started with this. • Services or Shared Libraries?

  I work in an environment where we have several different web applications, where each of them have different features but still need to do similar things: authentication, read from common data sources, store common data, etc. Is it better to build the shared functionality into a set of services, to be called by the web apps, or is it better to make a shared library, which the webapps include? The services or libraries would need to access various databases, and it seems like keeping that access in a single place (service) is a good idea. It would also reduce the number of database connections needed. A service would also keep the logic in a single place, but then it could be argued that a shared library can do the same thing. Are there other benefits to be gained from using services over shared libraries?

• Calling Web Service with Complex Parameters in ADF Mobile

  Many of the SOAP based web services out there have parameters of specific object types - so not just simple String/int inputs. The ADF Web service data control makes it quite simple to interact with them. And this applies also in the case of ADF Mobile. Since there were several thread on OTN asking about this - I thought I'll do a quick demo to refresh people memory about how you pass these "complex" parameters to your Web service methods. By the way - this video is also relevant if you are not doing mobile development, you'll basically use the exact same process for building "regular web" ADF applications that access these types of Web services. One more thing you might want to do after you create the page is look at the binding tab to see the method call in there, and notice the parameters for it in the structure property. Go and look at their NDValue property to get the complete picture.
