• ASP.NET 2.0 RijndaelManaged encryption algorithm vs. FIPS

  I'm running into an issue with an ASP.NET 2.0 application. Our network folks just upped our security, and now I get the floowing error whenever I try to access the app: "This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms." I've done a little research, and it sounds like ASP.NET uses the RijndaelManaged AES encryption algorithm to encrypt the ViewState of pages... and RijndaelManaged is on the list of algorithms that aren't FIPS compliant. We're certainly not explicitly calling any encryption algorithm... much less anything on the non-compliant list. This ViewState business makes sense to me, I guess. The thing I can't muddle out, though, is what to do about it. I've found a KB article that suggests using a web.config setting to specify a different algorithm... but either that didn't stick, or that algorithm isn't up to snuff, either. So: 1) Is the RijndaelManaged / ViewState thing actually the problem? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? 2) How to I specify what algorithm to use instead of RijndaelManaged? I've got a list of algorithms that are and aren't compliant; I'm just not sure where to plug that information in. Thanks! Richard

• log4j vs. System.out.println - logger advantages?

  Hi! I'm newly using log4j in a project. A fellow programmer told me that using System.out.println is considered bas style and that log4j is something like standard for logging matters nowadays. We do lots of JUnit testing - System.out stuff turns out to be harder to test. Therefore I began utilizing log4j for a Console controller class, that's just handling commandline parameters. // some logger config org.apache.log4j.BasicConfigurator.configure(); Logger logger = LoggerFactory.getLogger(Console.class); Category cat = Category.getRoot(); Seems to work: logger.debug("String"); Produces: 1 [main] DEBUG project.prototype.controller.Console - String I got two questions regarding this: From my basic understanding using this logger should provide me comfortable options to write a logfile with timestamps - instead of spamming the console - if debug mode is enabled at the logger? Why is System.out.println harder to test? I searched stackoverflow and found a testing recipe. So I wonder what kind of advantage I really get by using log4j.

• Spring.net is not injecting chained base class properties!

  I am successfully injecting base class properties with spring.net with just a class that inherits from a base abstract class. Lets say Class MyClass : MyBase, and I am successfully setting a property like this: <object id="myInstantiableClass" type="myAssembly.MyClass myAssenbly" abstract="true"> <property name="MyBaseClassProperty" ref="anotherObjRef"></property> </object> Where MyBaseClassProperty is a property on the base class. Now I have another abstract class between the old base class and the instantiable class, and I am trying to set properties on both the abstract classes. So MyClass : MyNewBaseClass, and MyNewBaseClass : MyBaseClass. I have an additional property on the new base class (MyNewBaseClassProperty) and I am trying to inject it like this: <object id="myInstantiableClass" type="myAssembly.MyClass myAssenbly" abstract="true"> <property name="MyBaseClassProperty" ref="anotherObjRef"></property> <property name="MyNewBaseClassProperty" ref="someOtherObjRef"></property> </object> The property on the old base class is being injected but the one on the new one is not - and I am not getting an error or anything (so I am pretty sure my config is good), that property is just null!   I will shamelessly state that I have little experience with Log4Net... I only just installed it, but it won't capture log events from Quartz.net, which is a scheduling library. Apparently Quartz.net uses Commons Logging and that needs to be configured to point to my Log4Net settings. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. • Can nginx be used as a reverse proxy for a backend websocket server?

  We're working on a Ruby on Rails app that needs to take advantage of html5 websockets. At the moment, we have two separate "servers" so to speak: our main app running on nginx+passenger, and a separate server using Pratik Naik's Cramp framework (which is running on Thin) to handle the websocket connections. Ideally, when it comes time for deployment, we'd have the rails app running on nginx+passenger, and the websocket server would be proxied behind nginx, so we wouldn't need to have the websocket server running on a different port. Problem is, in this setup it seems that nginx is closing the connections to Thin too early. The connection is successfully established to the Thin server, then immediately closed with a 200 response code. Our guess is that nginx doesn't realize that the client is trying to establish a long-running connection for websocket traffic. Admittedly, I'm not all that savvy with nginx config, so, is it even possible to configure nginx to act as a reverse proxy for a websocket server? Or do I have to wait for nginx to offer support for the new websocket handshake stuff? Assuming that having both the app server and the websocket server listening on port 80 is a requirement, might that mean I have to have Thin running on a separate server without nginx in front for now? • HTML Element doesn't display when served with php5, restart server with php4 and Element displays.

  Get this...I start the server in php5 and a specific HTML element ('a' element with a background image) is nowhere to be seen, I reboot the server in php4 and the HTML element is displaying properly. I boot back and forth between php5 and php4 with absolute consistent results, not displaying in php5 and displaying in php4. The thing that blows my mind is that: the HTML is consistent between boots of php5/4, so both scenarios have the necessary HTML elements the CSS is consistent between boots of php5/4, so both scenarios have the necessary CSS definitions there is an identically styled sibling element, with different class name that displays properly the problem is reproducible between browsers, between platforms. I've tested it on every possible config, Mac/Windows, IE6,7,8, FireFox, Safari etc... When the server is booted in php5 there is one HTML element that just doesn't display/render. A stab in the dark, I turned on PHP error reporting in php5 (to see if there would be any clues there) and low and behold the HTML element is now rendering in php5. I turn off PHP error reporting, and restart php5 and the HTML element is still rendering in php5, and the problem has been fixed...and I can't get the problem to reproduce. This is why my curiosity has brought me here. I just spent about four hours scratching my head trying to figure out how this could be. And now, I ask any php web dev gurus out there...what the heck was this all about?

  How do I go about the [HandleError] filter in asp.net MVC Preview 5? I set the customErrors in my web.config file <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="Error.aspx"> <error statusCode="403" redirect="NoAccess.htm"/> <error statusCode="404" redirect="FileNotFound.htm"/> </customErrors> and put [HandleError] above my Controller Class like this: [HandleError] public class DSWebsiteController: Controller{ [snip] public ActionResult CrashTest() { throw new Exception("Oh Noes!"); } } Then I let my controllers inherit from this class and call CrashTest() on them. Visual studio halts at the error and after pressing f5 to continue, I get rerouted to Error.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/sxi.mvc/CrashTest (where sxi is the name of the used controller. Off course the path cannot be found and I get "Server Error in '/' Application." 404. This site was ported from preview 3 to 5. Everything runs (wasn't that much work to port) except the error handling. When I create a complete new project the error handling seems to work. Ideas? --Note-- Since this question has over 3K views now, I thought it would be beneficial to put in what I'm currently (asp.net mvc 1.0) using. In the mvc contrib project there is a brilliant attribute called "RescueAttribute" You should probably check it out too ;)

  For the most part, my webapp requires authentication to do anything. There are a few pages, namely the homepage, that I'd like people to be able to access without authenticating. Specifically, I'd like to allow anonymous access to these urls: /home /default.aspx I'm using asp.net MVC and FormsAuthentication.   I have an application buit partially in classic asp and in c#. The authentication used as per the config file is windows. This is perfectly working. Now I have to authenticate the users against active directory. (ie. if any AD users requesting my application, it should authenticate the user (on login page load) and redirect to the application home page instead of showing login page) The login page is an asp page and I created an aspx page where the login.asp page will be redirected during page load to autheticate with Active Directory. I hav e disabled anonymous access in IIS and currently used only Integrated Windows Authentication. Also given permission to "Authenticated Users" in Permissions. While trying to access the login.asp page I am getting the following error. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied because your Web browser is sending a WWW-Authenticate header field that the Web server is not configured to accept. Please try the following: Contact the Web site administrator if you believe you should be able to view this directory or page. Click the Refresh button to try again with different credentials.   I am trying to build Linux From Scratch, and now I am at chapter 5.4, which tells me how to build Binutils. • Missing line number in stack trace eventhough the PDB files are included

  This is running me nuts. I have this web service implemented w/ C# using VS 2008. I publish it on IIS. I have modified the release build so the pdb files are copied along with the dlls into the target directory on inetpub. Also web.config file has debug=true. Then I call a web service that throws an exception. The stack trace does not contain the line numbers. I have no idea what I am missing here, any ideas? Additional Info: If I run the web app using VS built-in web server, it works and I get line numbers in stack trace. But if I copy the same files (pdb and dll) that the VS built-in web server is using to IIS, still the line numbers are missing in stack trace. It seems that there is something related to the IIS that ignores the pdb files! Update When I publish to IIS, all the pdb files are published under the bin directory and everything looks fine. But when I go to "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files" under the specific directory related to my project, I can see that the assembly (.dll) files are all there, but there is no pdb files. But this does not happen if I run the project using VS built-in web server. So if I copy the pdb files manually to the temp folder, I can see the line numbers. Any idea why the pdb files are not copied to the temp folder? BTW, when I attach to the worker process I can see that it says Symbols loaded!

• Problem using custom HttpHandler to process requests for both .aspx and non-extension pages in IIS7

  I am trying to process both ".aspx" and non-extension page requests (i.e. both contact.aspx and /contact/) using a custom HttpHandler in IIS7. My handler works just fine in either one case or the other, but as soon as I try to process both cases, it only works for one. Please see Handlers snippet from my web.config below: If i keep only mapping to "*.aspx" then all .aspx requests are processed correctly, but obviously extensionless requests won't work: <add name="AllPages.ASPX" path="*.aspx" verb="*" type="Test.PageHandlerFactory, Test" preCondition="" /> If i change the mapping to "*" then all extensionless requests are processed correctly, but ".aspx" requests that should still be handled by this handler stop working. Note that i added the StaticFiles entry in order to process files that are on disk like images, css, js, etc. <add name="WebResource" path="WebResource.axd" verb="GET" type="System.Web.Handlers.AssemblyResourceLoader" /> <add name="StaticFiles" verb="GET,HEAD" path="*.*" type="System.Web.StaticFileHandler" resourceType="File" /> <add name="AllPages" path="*" verb="*" type="Test.PageHandlerFactory, Test" preCondition="" /> The crazy thing is that when i load an ".aspx" request (with the 2nd configuration shown) IIS7 gives a 404 not found error. The error also says that the request is processed by the StaticFiles handler. But I made sure to add resourceType="File" to the StaticFileHandler in order to avoid this. According to MS this means the request is only for "physical files on disk". Am i misreading/interpreting the "on disk" part? My .aspx file isn't on disk, that's why i want to use the handler in the first place.

• Converting VS2008 Solution to VS2010 Creates compile errors in ASP.NET 3.5 SP1

  I am converting a large solution from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. The conversion completes without errors. When I go to build the solution one particular section of the application throws error but it didn't when the solution was 2008. Error 1 Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.DataVisualization, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. C:\MyProject\Results\Result.ascx 3 And C:\CMyProject\Results\Result.ascx(3): Build (web): Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.DataVisualization, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. The dll is in the bin and it is not in the GAC. The .refresh file is pointing to the correct location. And all sections in the Web.Config are there, if you need to see them let me know. I have gone over the fixes I found online and nothing seems to help. I would really appreciate if someone could help me or point me in the right direction? Thank You.

  In a web app developed in PHP we are generating Quotations and Invoices (which are very simple and of single page) using TCPDF lib. The lib is working just great but it seems to generate very large PDF files. For example in our case it is generating PDF files as large as 4 MB (+/- a few KB). How to reduce this bloating of PDF files generated by TCPDF?   Hi all.... I have a project that have cruiseControl running to build our things. • Temporary debug releases and final application releases

  I have a quick question regarding debug and release in VS 2008. I have an app i've been working on - its not yet complete but the bulk of the functionality is there. So basically i'm trying to give a copy of it now to the person helping with documentation - just so they can have a play and get the feel for what i've made. Now the question is how to provide it to them. I was told to just copy the .exe out of the debug/bin folder and put that onto USB. But when testing, if I run this .exe anywhere else (outside of this folder) it crashes. I've now worked out why this is: var path = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["PathToUse"]; var files = Directory.GetFiles(path); throws a null reference, so that App.config file is not being used. If I copy that file in with the .exe it works again. So actually my question is regarding the best way to manage this situation. What is the best way to provide a working copy to people, and, is there a reference on preparing apps for release - so everything is packaged together and installed in a clean structured folder heirarchy?

• Getting DirectoryNotFoundException when trying to Connect to Device with CoreCon API

  I'm trying to use the CoreCon API in Visual Studio 2008 to programmatically launch device emulators. When I call device.Connect(), I inexplicably get a DirectoryNotFoundException. I get it if I try it in PowerShell or in C# Console Application. • Nginx not responding to remote IP

  I just installed Nginx listening on 8083 I can get a HTTP response when sending a HTTP request from the local machine. eg: curl -i localhost:8083 However, when I do the same from a remote machine, it just hangs until the ssh times out, or when the browser times out if accessed from the browser. • How to refactor use of the general Exception?

  Our code catches the general exception everywhere. Usually it writes the error to a log table in the database and shows a MessageBox to the user to say that the operation requested failed. If there is database interaction, the transaction is rolled back. I have introduced a business logic layer and a data access layer to unravel some of the logic. In the data access layer, I have chosen not to catch anything and I also throw ArgumentNullExceptions and ArgumentOutOfRangeExceptions so that the message passed up the stack does not come straight from the database. In the business logic layer I put a try catch. In the catch I rollback the transaction, do the logging and rethrow. In the presentation layer there is another try catch that displays a MessageBox. I am now thinking about catching a DataException and an ArgumentException instead of an Exception where I know the code only accesses a database. Where the code accesses a web service, then I thought I would create my own "WebServiceException", which would be created in the data access layer whenever an HttpException, WebException or SoapException is thrown. So now, generally I will be catching 2 or 3 exceptions where currently I catch just the general Exception, and I think that seems OK to me. Does anyone wrap exceptions up again to carry the message up to the presentation layer? I think I should probably add a try catch to Main() that catches Exception, attempts to log it, displays an "Application has encountered an error" message and exits the application. So, my question is, does anyone see any holes in my plan? Are there any obvious exceptions that I should be catching or do these ones pretty much cover it (other than file access - I think there is only 1 place where we read-write to a config file).
