  • LINQPad still being used much out there?

    I'm trying to guage how popular and how used LINQPad is today. I'm just wondering if it's still a useful tool or not as VS and other tools have gotten better. Furthermore, I am coding over LLBGen by working with LINQ to SQL. I see there is a plug-in for LLBGen and LINQPad. Still I wonder if LINQPad is really worth it or what benefits it can give me or if it's still highly suggested out there for ORMs, etc.

  • PASS Summit for SQL Starters

    I’ve received a buch of emails from PASS Summit “First Timers” that are also somehow new to SQL Server (for “somehow” I mean people with less than 6 month experience but with some basic knowledge of SQL Server engine) or are catching up from SQL Server 2000. The common question regards the session one should not miss to have a broad view of the entire SQL Server platform have some insight into some specific areas of SQL Server Given that I’m on (semi-)vacantion and that I have more free time (not true, I have to prepare slides & demos for several conferences, PASS Summit  - Building the Agile Data Warehouse with SQL Server 2012 - and PASS 24H - Agile Data Warehousing with SQL Server 2012 - among them…but let’s pretend it to be true), I’ve decided to make a post to answer to this common questions. Of course this is my personal point of view and given the fact that the number and quality of session that will be delivered at PASS Summit is so high that is very difficoult to make a choice, fell free to jump into the discussion and leave your feedback or – even better – answer with another post. I’m sure it will be very helpful to all the SQL Server beginners out there. I’ve imposed to myself to choose 6 session at maximum for each Track. Why 6? Because it’s the maximum number of session you can follow in one day, and given that all the session will be on the Summit DVD, they are the answer to the following question: “If I have one day to spend in training, which session I should watch?”. Of course a Summit is not like a Course so a lot of very basics concept of well-established technologies won’t be found here. Analysis Services, Integration Services, MDX are not part of the Summit this time (at least for the basic part of them).   • Can a site recover by itself after dropping google page rank for 404 errors?

    Recently redid a website and changed the directory / URL structure. I did some .htaccess redirects for the main landing pages - however when reviewing web master tools received 404 errors for the rest of the changed URLs and noticed that Google dropped my site from the #1 position to around the 5th page. I corrected all the 404s by providing redirects in the .htaccess, resubmitted the site map and tested the google crawl bot. Will my page regain its rank by itself - or am I going to have to put some time into like I originally did?

  • Will Beej's Guide to Network programming point me the right way to be able to make multiplayer games and a web broswer?

    I'm new to socket programming in C, and I've found the Beej's Guide to Networking programming. It looks fine and all, however, I just wanted to ask whether this tutorial will point me in the right direction in terms of network programming. I plan to build a game in opengl that will be multiplayer using c+ and possibly a web browser. I know this tutorial would by no means teach me how to do this, but would this be a good way to start off on my path?

  • Does Fetch as Googlebot still support their ajax-crawling proposal?

    I spent half a day implementing the server side html generation for modal pages based on their proposal (link), but it seems like the Fetch as Googlebot functionality in Webmaster tools completely ignores the URL fragment. I've verified that the _escaped_fragment_ functionality is working on my server (example), but when I submit a URL like /#!/recipes, the Googlebot just fetches /. There aren't any recent confirmations that it's working and, honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if they just silently dropped the functionality without even editing the docs.

  • average screen ratio

    Im building a portfolio website that uses full screen background images slideshow that are cropped to fit using a js plugin. To give the minimum amount of cropping whats the best ratio to make the images ? ie i know 13" macbooks are around 13:7 (when taking into account about 100px for the browser bar) but does that scale up on 15",24",17" displays ? I know there are charts showing the most common dimensions but they just show a range of sizes and thats categorized by groups rather than actual dimensions

The most important things I want this series to answer is : What is it?  Why do I care? How do I do it? I hope that you enjoy this series. Let’s get started: Tip/Trick #11) What is it? Underline Text in a TextBlock. Why do I care? I’ve seen people do some crazy things to get underlined text in a Silverlight Application. In case you didn’t know there is a property for that. How do I do it: On a TextBlock you have a property called TextDecorations. You can easily set this property in XAML or CodeBehind with the following snippet: <UserControl x:Class="SilverlightApplication19.MainPage" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="300" d:DesignWidth="400"> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <TextBlock Name="txtTB" Text="MichaelCrump.NET" TextDecorations="Underline" /> </Grid> </UserControl> or you can do it in CodeBehind… txtTB.TextDecorations = TextDecorations.Underline;   Tip/Trick #12) What is it? Get the browser information from a Silverlight Application. Why do I care? This will allow you to program around certain browser conditions that otherwise may not be aware of. How do I do it: It is very easy to extract Browser Information out a Silverlight Application by using the BrowserInformation class. You can copy/paste this code snippet to have access to all of them. string strBrowserName = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.Name; string strBrowserMinorVersion = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.BrowserVersion.Minor.ToString(); string strIsCookiesEnabled = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.CookiesEnabled.ToString(); string strPlatform = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.Platform; string strProductName = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.ProductName; string strProductVersion = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.ProductVersion; string strUserAgent = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.UserAgent; string strBrowserVersion = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.BrowserVersion.ToString(); string strBrowserMajorVersion = HtmlPage.BrowserInformation.BrowserVersion.Major.ToString(); Tip/Trick #13) What is it? Always check the minRuntimeVersion after creating a new Silverlight Application. Why do I care? Whenever you create a new Silverlight Application and host it inside of an ASP.net website you will notice Visual Studio generates some code for you as shown below. The minRuntimeVersion value is set by the SDK installed on your system. Be careful, if you are playing with beta’s like “Lightswitch” because you will have a higher version of the SDK installed. So when you create a new Silverlight 4 project and deploy it your customers they will get a prompt telling them they need to upgrade Silverlight. They also will not be able to upgrade to your version because its not released to the public yet. How do I do it: Open up the .aspx or .html file Visual Studio generated and look for the line below. Make sure it matches whatever version you are actually targeting. Tip/Trick #14) What is it? The VisualTreeHelper class provides useful methods for involving nodes in a visual tree. Why do I care? It’s nice to have the ability to “walk” a visual tree or to get the rendered elements of a ListBox. I have it very useful for debugging my Silverlight application. How do I do it: Many examples exist on the web, but say that you have a huge Silverlight application and want to find the parent object of a control.  In the code snippet below, we would get 3 MessageBoxes with (StackPanel first, Grid second and UserControl Third). This is a tiny application, but imagine how helpful this would be on a large project. <UserControl x:Class="SilverlightApplication18.MainPage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignHeight="300" d:DesignWidth="400"> <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="White"> <StackPanel> <Button Content="Button" Height="23" Name="button1" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="75" Click="button1_Click" /> </StackPanel> </Grid> </UserControl> private void button1_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { DependencyObject obj = button1; while ((obj = VisualTreeHelper.GetParent(obj)) != null) { MessageBox.Show(obj.GetType().ToString()); } } Tip/Trick #15) What is it? Add ChildWindows to your Silverlight Application. Why do I care? ChildWindows are a great way to direct a user attention to a particular part of your application. This could be used when saving or entering data. How do I do it: Right click your Silverlight Application and click Add then New Item. Select Silverlight Child Window as shown below. Add an event and call the ChildWindow with the following snippet below: private void button1_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { ChildWindow1 cw = new ChildWindow1(); cw.Show(); } Your main application can still process information but this screen forces the user to select an action before proceeding. (By portable I mean a program with all files within a certain directory that can be put in any place on the hard drive or on an external drive, a program that can be started by running an executable file from the same directory, and which can be run separately of other installed versions of the same program.)

  • How do I change hyperlink colours in LibreOffice Impress?

    I have a lot of Powerpoint slides that I converted to LibreOffice Impress. The resulting hyperlinks are very faded, very hard to see. I can't seem to find any way to change the colour of hyperlinks as a whole. Any colour change I do make on an individual url link does not hold when converted back to .ppt which is sometimes necessary. I have tried the tools=options=libreoffice=appearance route but it only seems to affect the very first hyperlink in the slide set

  • 500 Error on index.php file. All other php files are working well

    I've successfully installed LAMP and created some virtual hosts. Everything is working fine except index.php files. When I try access them, browser returns 500 Error, regardless of their content. All other PHP files are working fine, index.html files can be opened without any errors. Please, help me to resolve this problem. I guess something wrong with server configuration, but I didn't find what exactly.

    Possible Duplicate: What screenshot tools are available? Hi, is there a snapshot software for Ubuntu? Something like SnagIt? The idea is many times I have to take the snapshot and edit the image to crop to my region of interest, SnagIt does that automatically and very nicely. Another feature is to take a snapshot of text (that can't be otherwise copied - like text in a photo) and then parse it into actual text document using an OCR technology. Thanks

  • Web app to take screen shot of website and annotate?

    Does anyone know of a website that will take a full screen shot of another website and let users write notes over it then send that annotated photo by email or private link? Basically looking for quicker way to write notes on a site other than taking a screen shot my self and putting it into photoshop. Just an update, I don't need any browser extensions which I already have and do the same. I'm looking for a website app which does this to give to a client.
