• Is count(*) really expensive ?

  I have a page where I have 4 tabs displaying 4 different reports based off different tables. I obtain the row count of each table using a select count(*) from <table> query and display number of rows available in each table on the tabs. As a result, each page postback causes 5 count(*) queries to be executed (4 to get counts and 1 for pagination) and 1 query for getting the report content. Now my question is: are count(*) queries really expensive -- should I keep the row counts (at least those that are displayed on the tab) in the view state of page instead of querying multiple times? How expensive are COUNT(*) queries ?

• Stop debug stalling in eclipse

  I recently installed eclipse on my Mac pro. I had previously been using eclipse on my mac book. When I run an app engine project on the mac book, it works fine. When I run it on my mac pro it brings me into the debugger where I have to click resume a few times but then everything works well again. I went looking into the debug settings and many other settings pages but everything looks the same. I don't remember making any changes to my mac book settings. The code is an exact copy on both machines. What am I missing here? What settings do I need to change.

• Session sometimes timesout too quick

  I am noticing session timeouts on my asp.net mvc web app randomly without browser being incative for for more than few minutes. My understanding is the default timeout should be 20mins. But sometimes I get a timeout in couple minutes or even less than that. For example after browsing on the site for a while I might get a session timeout when i refresh a page very soon after I enter the page. This is very random but I have seen this happen quite a few times now and I am not sure how I can trace this to see why I loose sessions every once in a while whithout browser being inactive long. I checked my web.config an no timeout value is defined there so I assume it should be 20mins. Hard to debug as this does not occur regularly..

• Advice about testing an application before release?

  I would like to get some tips from peer developers about how you go about testing an application you developed, prior to release to QA. Keep in mind, this is a small scale application (requirements are verbal), and so doing formal testing processes wont work, especially, since your boss told you to develop this app quick, push it out the door. Despite the time restraints, I would like to make sure it is bug free, however, numerous times in the past, I have had the app sent back to me because clicking the "Reset" button, messes up the other controls alignment etc. I know there are people out there that develop small scale apps fast, and send them out with minimal bugs. Would I be able to search the registryPath variable above and get a count of the number of keys containing the "Entry Point" keyword? Assuming that there are also other keys existing without this keyword. • Looking for suggestions about an architecture of a MultiThreaded app.

  Hello everyone. I am looking to develop a multithreaded application that will be running in unconditional loop and processing high volume of data. High volume is 2000+ records per minute. Processing will involve data retrieval, calculations and data updates. I need the application to perform so that there is virtually no back log, meaning i need to be able to finish up all of the 2000 points in one minute or even faster. Our current implementation features a multithreaded application that is spawn multiple times (from 10 to 20) and we are noticing that it's not handling data as expected and i even feel that instances of the application compete with each other for processor time and eventually if not slowing, not benefiting each other for sure. I would like to know what would be the best approach: have a single instance running but maximize threads that can run simultaneously? or is there other ways i don't know? I'm open to suggestions.   As mentioned in this answer simply calling the destructor for the second time is already undefined behavior 12.4/14(3.8). For example: class Class { public: ~Class() {} }; // somewhere in code: { Class* object = new Class(); object->~Class(); delete object; // UB because at this point the destructor call is attempted again } In this example the class is designed in such a way that the destructor could be called multiple times - no things like double-deletion can happen. The memory is still allocated at the point where delete is called - the first destructor call doesn't call the ::operator delete() to release memory. For example, in Visual C++ 9 the above code looks working. Even C++ definition of UB doesn't directly prohibit things qualified as UB from working. So for the code above to break some implementation and/or platform specifics are required. Why exactly would the above code break and under what conditions?

[[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:file ofType:nil] : [[NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains(NSDocumentDirectory, NSUserDomainMask, YES) objectAtIndex:0] stringByAppendingPathComponent: file]; NSData* fileData = [NSData dataWithContentsOfFile:filePath]; Where "fileName" and resource are load function parameters. "resource" is used to know if the file is located in application bundle or in Documents. Sometimes this code works well and sometimes it doesn't. As far I saw this problem is random. I can run the code 10 times in a row and it works fine and after that it gives me nil data without any modification. Does anybody knows what could be the problem? Could it be related with file extension or file name? Thank you. PS: I use this code on iPhone Simulator and the file exists in application bundle.

Though I'm using an iterator as I've been told many times that's good programming : and I'm wondering if the iterator has a "index" number of something which I can use to calculate the new X position? • Why is new showat attribute required when using code generation?

  When I generate code using T4 templates in Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error for each of my asp controls when I try to compile: Control "ddState" is missing required attribute "showat". I have never gotten this error in previous versions of .NET. Further, I don't get this error when I manually construct my pages either by dragging/dropping, nor do I get it when I type out the control text myself. When I generate code, I have to manually add showat="client" to my tag for the compiler to be happy. It was my understanding that I never had to explicitly specify this tag. The following: <asp:dropdownlist id="ddState" runat="server" showat="client" /> solves the problem. Why do I have to add this to generated code but not other times? (It's a VS-2010 webforms project, using VB, in case that makes a difference.)

• How do I keep a count of undefined strings within a loop using PHP?

  I'm using a loop within a loop to try to generate keyword combinations and also find the ones that have been used the most. My outside loop just queries a list of keywords (lets use "chicago" as our first keyword, 3 records were found). The inside loop finds all the records in the "posts" table where keyword = "chicago". Within this loop, I need to generate strings based on info I found in the database. Which, would look something like "chicago bulls", "chicago bears", "chicago cubs" etc... I know how to do everything up until this point, but how do I temporary hold these generated strings and count how many times they have been found within the 3 records?

  I have an activity (called Sender) with the most basic UI, only a button that sends a message when clicked. If I call sendSMS method three times, three new instances are started. I'm quite new to android so I need some help with this, I only want the same Sender to be on all the time

  Hi, I am getting the error Fatal error: Cannot redeclare config() (previously declared in.../basics.php:58, in live server. It works fine in my local server but when i uploaded the site to live server, i got the fatal error. I checked if the config() was declared multiple times but it's only declared once in basics.php file. The naming conventions are also followed, as it is working fine in local server. It only displays such error in live site. Please suggest solution for this. Help on this will be much appreciated.

My constraint is that I use Facebook Connect (Facebook Graph now) so I need to have the dev and prod on the same domain and server. (to be able to log in and test the features) I thought I will edit the CodeIgniter Index.php to redirect if I have a specific user agent (I can edit the one of my firefox) You think it's a good Idea or you have a better one ? And now comes the eternal question : how can I deploy this the easy way ? should I use Capistrano or Phing ? or simply a script with SVN ? Please help me, I'm totally new to this Deployment thing. I used to work directly in production for my little websites or on other domains. but now it's not possible anymore.

• Converting a stopwatch time to milliseconds (regex)

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to convert a string containing a time to an integer number of milliseconds. I'm using a suboptimal way using a bunch of preg_match()'s and some array handling, but I was wondering if there was an elegant way. Here are some example stopwatch times (some wouldn't actually be seen on a stopwatch but need to be converted anyway): 3:34:05.81 34:05 5 (just 5 seconds) 89 (89 seconds) 76:05 (76 minutes, 5 seconds) Millseconds will not extend past 2 decimal places. I think it might be something to do with how my files are nested but it makes no sense. I am opening the SQL connection in the header file.   I have a Python-driven web interface powered by Apache 2.2 with mod_python and Python 2.4. I need to make an asynchronous process appear synchronous to users of this web interface. When users access one module on this website: An external SOAP interface will be contacted with a unique identifier and will respond with a number N The external interface will respond asynchronously by contacting a SOAP server on my machine between 1 and 10 times (the number N tells us how many responses we will receive) I need to somehow aggregate these responses and pass them to the original module which will display the information back to the user. The goal is to make the process appear synchronous to the user. What is the best way to handle this synchronization issue? Is this something Twisted would be well-suited for? I am not restricting myself to Python for the solution, though it is preferred because everything else on the server is in Python. I prefer a solution that is both scalable and will take a minimal amount of programming time (though I understand that these attributes are somewhat at odds).

One of the main reasons it is bad practice to ever include a "source file" (#include <source_file.cpp>) is that its methods implementation would then be duplicated, resulting in linking errors. When one writes: #ifndef BRITNEYSPEARS_HPP #define BRITNEYSPEARS_HPP class BritneySpears { public: BritneySpears() {}; // Here the constructor has implementation. }; #endif /* BRITNEYSPEARS_HPP */ He is giving the implementation of the constructor (here an "empty" implementation, but still). But why then including this header file multiple times (aka. on different source files) will not generate a "duplicate definition" error at link time ?

  This is a fairly easy one, but I cant seem to figure it out. Basically I have a jquery hover that fades in a div and fades out the other upon hover. When I quickly hover on and off a few times it pulses back and forth for about 3-4 seconds to finish all those fade in/fade outs. I generally stop these things with .stop(), but it doesnt seem to do the trick here. • Firefox extension dev: observing preferencies, avoid multiple notifications

  Let's say my Firefox extension has multiple preferences, but some of them are grouped, like check interval, fail retry interval, destination url. Those are used in just single function. When I subscribe to preference service and add observer, the observe callback will be called for each changed preference, so if by chance user changed all of the settings in group, then I will have to do the same routine for the same subsystem as many times as I have items in that preferences group. What I want is observe to be called just once for group of preferences. Say extensions.myextension.interval1 extensions.myextension.site extensions.myextension.retry so if one or all of those preferences are changed, I receive only 1 notification about it.
