• Hard drive randomly sppeeding up

  Having a weird issue with my hard drive. Running Windows 7 with an I5 processor. At random times the hard drive will start running at top speed and gradually return to normal over the next two minutes or so. Going to Resource Monitor it shows a variety of things with high read or write numbers. Log files NTFS volume log, Windows prefetch, System/user/appdata, and Program data Norton are the usual top ones listed. This just started about three months ago although the computer is about 3 years old. Have run in safe mode with internet over the weekend going to all of my usual sites with no such speed up. Question 1 - what can be causing this? Question 2 - how can I find out where data is being sent(especially if over the net)? Thank you.

• How do you keep Cocoa controllers from getting too big?

  Hello! Do you have some tricks or techniques to break Cocoa controller classes into smaller chunks? I find that whatever I do the controllers end up being one of the more complicated classes in my design. The basic stuff is simple, but once I have several pop-overs or action sheets running, things get uncomfortably complex. It's not that bad, but still I would like to refactor the code into several standalone chunks. I thought about categories, but the code is not that independent (a lot of times it needs to tap into viewWillAppear, for example) and I find that I spend a long time fighting the compiler. I also thought about adding functionality in layers using inheritance, but that feels like a hack.

• Why is Rake not able to invoke multiple tasks consecutively?

  I have a Rake task which I have simplified below. I'm using Ruby 1.9 on Windows. Perhaps you would like to guess the outcome of calling the Rake task "list_all_levels" below? It should be: "Hello level 1" "Hello level 2" "Hello level 3" But for reasons unknown to me, it prints only "Hello level 1" and then stops. That is, it always invokes only the first task. If I change the first line to pass the arg "42", it would print "Hello level 42" and then stop. I'm wondering why does it not invoke the task 3 times and print all 3 lines? • Software to cd (change directories) into .jar/.ear files?

  Is there any software/script that will allow me to cd (change directories) into .jar/.ear/.zip files and edit the contents of the files it contains? I'm working on a large EJB project (yuck), and I frequently find myself in situations like the following: something.ear/ |-- something.jar/ | `-- fileINeedToEdit.xml I work primarily via the command line (Mac/Linux), so I find myself decompressing the files with jar -xvf, editing the file I need to edit, and then recompressing with jar -cvf. Obviously, this becomes a major headache after the first few times. I'd like to be able to treat the compressed files as directories, and simply cd (or some alternate command) to the file I want to edit. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?

• Why is this loop over mysql resultset slow? (1.4ms per cycle)

  The $res contains around 488k rows the whole loop takes 61s! that's over 1.25ms per cycle! • In Rails, what could cause a user to have another user's session?

  I have a Rails application using with an authentication system using Restful Authentication without any modification. Users have reported finding themselves logged in as the wrong user. In at least one case it was on their very first page view, never having logged in before. Is it possible their session ids are getting mixed up? Would switching to CookieStore make it impossible for this to happen since no session data is stored on the server this way? I suspect the problem is related to Passenger but I don't know where to start debugging this. Its only happened about 4 times in several months of being live so its virtually impossible to reproduce. Environment: ActiveRecord session storage Rails 2.2.2 Passenger 2.0.1 Apache 2 Ruby 1.8.6 Many thanks

  I spot some interesting articles about exception handle in CodeProject http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cpp/seexception.aspx After reading, I decided to do some experiment. The first time I try to execute the following code char *p; p[0] = 0; The program died without question. But After several times when I executed the same problem binary code, it magically did fine. Even the following code is doing well. Any clue or explanation? char *p p[1000] = 'd'; cout<<p[1000]<<endl; My O/S is Windows 7 64bit and compiler is VS2008 rc1.

  I am making a shopping list app. When an item is added to the text input, it should be converted into a list item with a class of "tile" and added to the beginning of the list with a class of ".shopping_item_list".   I am trying to implement orientation change functionality in my application.I have overrided -(void) didRotateFromInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)fromInterfaceOrientation. In this method i change the frame size of the tableview(including the position of the cell items) which is present in the view. The tableview Details: Added to the view as [self.view addSubView:tableView] in the viewDidLoad method of the view controller; Cell item (row) has a textfield and a segmented control. There are 10 cells in the table view and in landscape mode only 2 cells are visible and in potrait mode 5 cells are visible. I have implemented scroller. Issue: Certain times on changing the orientation to potrait mode certain segmented controls in the cell are not rendered (Not shown at all). This happens when i am viewing the last couple of cells in the landscape mode and i change the orientation to potrait mode.

  Hi, We are doing the following in the Application_Start (Global.ascx.cs) for a WCF Service hosted by IIS 7.0 (integrated pipeline). var mapperConfigurations = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies() .SelectMany(a => a.GetExportedTypes().Where(t => typeof (IMapperConfiguration).IsAssignableFrom(t) && t.IsClass)) .ToList(); The web-service has 8-10 assemblies in its bin folder and each of them have multiple implementations of IMapperConfiguration. After an IIS Reset, no mapper configurations are found (found this using debug.write). However, this behaviour is inconsistent and at other times all implementations of IMapperConfiguration are found. When exactly does IIS load assemblies and what is wrong with this code? Thanks

  I need to create a pdf file with several chart created by ggplot2 arranged in a A4 paper, and repeat it 20-30 times. I export the ggplot2 chart into ps file, and try to PostScriptTrace it as instructed in grImport, but it just keep giving me error of "Unrecoverable error, exit code 1". If i have 10 bars in collection, i'll call db 10 times. bars.Select(x=x.Foo.Title) At the moment this (using NHibernate Linq and i don't want to drop it) retrieves Bar collection. var q = from b in Session.Linq<Bar>() where ... select b; I read what Ayende says about this. Another related question. A bit of documentation. And another related blog post. Maybe this can help? What about this? Maybe MultiQuery is what i need? :/ But i still can't 'compile' this in proper solution. How to avoid select n+1?

• TFS for version maintainance

  I am part of a team that releases versions of our software 4-5 times each year to our customers. We maintain the previous 2-3 versions of our product by correcting any errors that we come across in later versions. We are using TFS 2008 for source control and are trying to find the best way of maintaining the older versions. We currently create a branch of our application each time we do a new version, but we are looking for a good way to update old versions more easily. For example, we complete 9.5 but two weeks after we created the branch and are working on 10.0, we realize that 9.5 has an error. We currently make the change in version 10.0 and then open 9.5 to make the change again. Is there anyway of automating this? Thanks!

• Comparing 2 linq applications: Unexpected result

  I drafted 2 ASP.NET applications using LINQ. One connects to MS SQL Server, another to some proprietary memory structure. Both applications work with tables of 3 int fields, having 500 000 records (the memory structure is identical to SQL Server table). The controls used are regular: GridView and ObjectDataSource. In the applications I calculate the average time needed for each paging click processing. LINQ + MS SQL application demands 0.1 sec per page change. LINQ + Memory Structure demands 0.8 sec per page change. This Is shocking result. Why the application handling data in memory works 8 times slower than the application using hard drive? Can anybody tell me why that happens?

• How to change the jtooltip timers for 1 component.

  I have a component where i want to display a custom jtooltip. That is easy, just change the getTooltip method. Similar for location and text. However i also want to change the timers. The tooltip should always be displayed if the mouse is over a cellrenderer of the component. If it leaves all of those it should be turned invisible. I know that i can use TooltipManager to control the times globally. But the best solution is probably to just shortcircut that and display the tooltip myself with a mouselistener. However when i tried to do that (unregister the component in TooltipManager and setting the tooltip visible, with text and in the correct position, in a mouse listener) the tooltip never showed at all. What am i doing wrong?

Since tests can usually be run separately. So the result of Create may never be cleaned up by Delete.

• Dynamic SQL queries in code possible?

  Instead of hard coding sql queries like Select * from users where user_id =220202 can these be made dynamic like Select * from $users where $user_id = $input. Reason i ask is when changes are needed to table/column names i can just update it in one place and don't have to ask developers to go line by line to find all references to update. It is very time consuming. And I do not like the idea of exposing database stuff in the code. My major concern is load time. Like with dynamic pages, the database has to fetch the page content, same way if queries are dynamic first system has to lookup the references then execute the queries, so does it impact load times? I am using codeignitor PHP. If it it possible then the next question is where to store all the references? In the app, in a file, in the DB, and how?

Why (.*) is not working since it means match any character zero or more times

• Is it possible to add .NET code (sections) to a WordPress site?

  Our shop is primarily .NET but because of the lack of any really good popular .NET CMS products, we have chosen to use WordPress (and Drupal at times) for our public facing sites. I realize this is highly subjective, but it is the conclusion we came to for our purposes. One could certainly make a case for DotNetNuke and others, but that is another conversation. I would like to know if I can integrate small components into WordPress sites, primarily to do simple forms (logon, lost password, contact us, change user settings, etc...) Can I do this with an iFrame or another method that I am not thinking about?

When panelParent_Resizes panelChild does a panelChild_HeavyOperation. panelParent rezizes multiple times in InitializeComponent of Form1 and consume a lot of time because of panelChild_HeavyOperation. • Not enough storage is available to complete this operation - Program or Storage memory?

  I've been given a Windows Mobile app written in .Net CF 3.5 to fix, and one of the problems is to do with storage. The message 'Not enough storage is available to complete this operation' has appeared a few times - it's logged in the SQL CE database, and always happens during data access (but not the same bit of data access). The thing I'm slightly confused about is whether this refers to Program Memory (e.g. RAM) or Storage Memory (e..g permanent storage). It would appear to be storage memory, but the devices seem to have plenty free. While there are some OutOfMemoryExceptions, these appear totally unrelated to this problem (in that that happen at a different time due to an image-related issue). We're using SQL CE 3.5 with a single connection, which is stored along with the app on the device (as opposed to the storage card). The device is a Motorola MC75 running Windows Mobile 6.1. Any thoughts?

  I have 2 mysql tables 1. questions: with the following columns: id, title, answer1, answer2, answer3, answer4, answer5, nranswers. and 2. answers with the following columns: id, questionid, userid, answer Every question has maximum 5 answers( it can have between 2 and 5 answers). My problem is that I want to select from my database, for a given question, how many times was every option selected. For example, let's suppose I have the question with the id 46, with 4 answers, and 48 users voted for the option #2, 37 users for the option #1 and 39 for the option #4. I want a query that selects that and write these things: 1 37 2 48 3 0 4 39 P.S. VERY IMPORTANT! IT MUST COUNT ONLY NRANSWERS ANSWERS, AND IT MUST ECHO THE ONES THAT WEREN'T VOTED BEFORE.
