• Change popup format for Kopete in Gnome (Ubuntu 10.04)

  After trialling Empathy which was included with Gnome/Ubuntu 10.04 I decided to go back to Kopete since I was losing chat messages. However, for some reason, Kopete is now displaying all popups in a big, ugly window with four options (ok, cancel, view, ignore, or something like that) that actually all seem to do nothing. I tried looking for options in Kopete to change the popup style to the nicer Gnome style one which goes up in the top-right of my desktop, but it doesn't seem to be possible with this release. So I had to resort to removing all popup messages from Kopete to prevent my screen being taking over by a popup requiring action for every incoming chat message. Unfortunately, this now means that I do not get any notifications when people message me - and so I can go a couple of hours without realising that they did. Anyone know how to get the nice, unobtrusive popups working in this version?

• Disk names in Solaris 10 for ZFS: SAS WWN instead of c0t0d0

  I currently have a server running Solaris 10u9 with a SAS enclosure (Dell PowerVault MD1000) filled with SATA disks attached to an SAS card (LSI 3801E). It happily recognizes the 15 disks in the MD1000 and presents them each disk in the traditional solaris form (c1t12d0, c1t13d0, c1t15d0, etc). My home ZFS setup (Nexenta CP3 + LSI 9200-16E + directly cabled SATA disks) presents disks as their SAS WWN ID (ex: c3t600039300001EA56d0). Although this ID is longer, I've found it much easier to troubleshoot because the cabling/slot is irrelevant, ZFS just identifies the disk by ID, if it's connected it finds it. Most manufacturers print the WWN right on the disk's top label, can't get much easier than that. So how can I get Solaris to identify disks by SAS WWN instead of by the cXtXdX?

• Spawn phone call from EC2 alerts

  I have a system setup on AWS/EC2, it currently is using their CloudWatch alert system. The problem is this sends just to email, when ideally I would like this to be making a phone call and/or sending text messages to certain phone numbers when an alert fires (Note that I do not need the phone call to actually say anything, just call the person). We are trying to solve the problem that Amazon alerts are only useful if people are checking their email, which isnt always the case because all server problems love to happen at 4am on saturday... Please respond with any possible solutions/ideas, ideally I do not want to implement an entire monitoring system (IE: Nagios) on top of everything to handle this.

• Issue tracking multiple domains with Google Analytics

  I have 2 domains mydomain.com and mydomain.net which I'm trying to track with the same GA code. Here are the options I turned on: Subdomains of mydomain ON Examples: www.mydomain.com -and- apps.mydomain.com -and- store.mydomain.com Multiple top-level domains of mydomain ON Examples: mydomain.uk -and- mydomain.cn -and- mydomain.fr Which gave me the following code: _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-123456789-1']); _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'mydomain.com']); _gaq.push(['_setAllowLinker', true]); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); In this help page I read that _setDomainName must be changed for each domain which I did: -if you go to mydomain.net you get _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'mydomain.net']); -if you go to mydomain.com you get _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'mydomain.com']); When I generate traffic on both mydomain.dom and mydomain.net and watches GA push requests made with firebug I can see requests generated for both domains and the parameter called utmhn has the proper domain value (which matches that of _setDomainName and the browser address bar). However when I monitor the realtime statistics under Home->Real-Time->Overview I see pageviews for mydomain.net BUT NOT for mydomain.dom :( What am I missing to properly track both domains? PS: in the help page I mentioned they talk about setting up cross links which I didn't do for now as my understanding is that it shouldn't be needed to get what I'm trying to do to work. Also I want to mention that I do not have any tracking code for any of these 2 domains other than the one I mentioned.

• What to choose for a multilingual site with support for Markdown and commenting

  I want to publish articles at a multilingual site. I want to be able to write an article in two languages and have them available on separate URLs: thesite.foo/english-breakfast thesite.com/engelsk-frukost If the users web browser is set to English I'd like to show a small notice at the top of the Swedish version with a link to the English one. The link should have an appropriate rel attribute for a translation (search for hreflang at http://diveintohtml5.org/semantics.html). There should be a way to list all articles belonging to these sets: Swedish only, English only, Swedish versions + English only, English versions + Swedish only. I'd like to publish these as four RSS-feeds. And I would like to have two versions of the main site, one in Swedish (showing Swedish versions + English only) and one in English (showing English versions). I shall be able to write the articles using Markdown, as that is the formatting language I find most convenient. There should be a way for users to comment. And some kind of way for me to protect myself against comment spam. I am leaning towards learning Drupal. I suspect I'll have to code this behavior myself as a module. To be frank I'd rather work with Java. Is Drupal the way to go? Or is there something more suitable for this project?

  Hi, I modify my Computer case so that I can add more computer fan to make my computer cool this summer. I would need your thoughts how I can improve my idea and I'm open to all of your advices. Status: Fan Position (The blue circles are the fan's location) At the side I have to intake blowing fresh air at the motherboard and at the top and back I have Exhaust fan blowing out hot air. The computer fans will be powered by 12v adapter (recycled) so that my power supply wouldn't be overloaded. I need a practical advice, I don't want to spend to much on this. Thanks.

• Removing RAID on a DELL power-edge server

  We have a Dell Power-edge T110 server, with either a PERC S100 or S300 raid controller (I suspect S100), and 2 x 500GB SATA hard discs. These discs are running in RAID-1 configuration, (either 1 or 2 virtual discs), and on top of this, we have the C and D drives. As we are running low on disc space, we are looking at dropping the RAID to get some disc space back. Is it possible to split the discs back into 2 seperate hards discs that the OS can see, without losing all the data on the drives? Even better, would it be possible to split the D: drive, leaving the OS C: drive in RAID1 configuration?

• Is there a Google Chrome extension or userscript that will "bottom-justify" form fields?

  When using Google Chrome, I would like to have a page scroll up so the bottom of form fields are at or above the bottom of the window when I click in the text input to begin entering something. However, if the form height is larger than the window, the top should not be scrolled off automatically. I want to go from: to: An bonus essential feature would be for the input box to automatically be resized in height (but not width) to fill the window. This feature ideally would be configurable: enable/disable and margin above and below. There should be no scrolling or resizing for one-line input boxes. Is there an extension or userscript that does something like this?

  Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?Here is how it happens: I wanted to download a 12GB torrent.After adding the .torrent file, transmission turned into a zombie process.I tried ktorrent too.Same behavior.Finally I could download the file using µTorrent but after closing the program, it turns into a zombie as well. I tried using kill skill and pkill with different options and -9 signal but no success. In some answers in web I found out killing the parent can kill the zombie, but killing wine didn't help either. Is there another way? • More Tables or More Databases?

  I got an e-mail from someone that has an interesting situation. He has 15,000 customers, and he asks if he should have a database for their data per customer. Without a LOT more data it’s impossible to say, of course, but there are some general concepts to keep in mind. Whenever you’re segmenting data, it’s all about boundary choices. You have not only boundaries around how big the data will get, but things like how many objects (tables, stored procedures and so on) that will be involved, if there are any cross-sections of data (do they share location or product information) and – very important – what are the security requirements? From the answer to these types of questions, you now have the choice of making multiple tables in a single database, or using multiple databases. A database carries some overhead – it needs a certain amount of memory for locking and so on. But it has a very clean boundary – everything from objects to security can be kept apart. Having multiple users in the same database is possible as well, using things like a Schema. But keeping 15,000 schemas can be challenging as well. My recommendation in complex situations like this is similar to a post on decisions that I did earlier – I lay out the choices on a spreadsheet in rows, and then my requirements at the top in the columns. I  give each choice a number based on how well it meets each requirement. At the end, the highest number wins. And many times it’s a mix – perhaps this person could segment customers into larger regions or districts or products, in a database. Within that database might be multiple schemas for the customers. • HP LaserJet 1320 printing black boxes instead of text

  I have an HP LaserJet 1320, running off of the HP PCL5 64-bit Universal Driver (Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit). When printing, anything other than body text is blacked out. I.e. on an email, where the 'To...', 'From...', 'CC...' and 'Subect' are usually shown at the top, there is just a black box. And on Word documents, anything to do with Track Changes is also blacked out. I have tried restarting the Print Spooler, and reinstalling the printer, but this does not help. Does anybody know why this is happening?

The majority of papers for this year's conference have already been selected, however, there are some presentation slots still available so the OpenWorld team are giving you the chance to vote on which papers you want to see at this year's OpenWorld conference.The voting process has just opened and will close on June 20. I did a quick search on the list of sessions one paper really caught my eye: Case Study: Real-Time data warehousing and fraud detection with Oracle 11gR2 by Dr. Holger Friedrich. As a data warehouse product manager I would love to see this paper selected. I have attended a number of presentations over the years given by Holger and he is an excellent, knowledgeable and entertaining presenter. • wbadmin incremental system state backup

  I am doing system state backups on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (Service Pack 1) machine and expected the backups after the first one to be incremental. However with each backup a new directory with vhd files are created and the vhd files are almost the same size as the with the first backup. So the backups does not seem to be incremental. I used the following command to do the backup: wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:f: I played around with the settings under "Configure Performance Settings" in the Windows Server Backup plugin in Server Manager but according to the description at the top of the dialog these settings are not applied to system state backups. Are there any settings available for wbadmin system state backup to make the backups incremental?

  Color identifiers make it easier for developers to quickly read and understand the code on screen.  One of the many features provided by JustCode is the ability to colorize additional items that Visual Studio does not allow you to colorize by default.  The colorization of items such as methods, properties, events, variables, and method parameters can easily be tweaked to your specific needs.   Ill be speaking at the International Legal Technology Associations SharePoint for Legal Symposium on June 16th 2010 at Microsofts offices in Downers Grove, IL.  My talk will be about Building Public-Facing Websites with SharePoint 2010.  SharePoint has quickly become a popular platform for companies to build their public-facing websites on.  Ill go over the new features in SharePoint 2010 specific to web content management, and also discuss some best practices and lessons learned from our experience building internet sites with SharePoint. • PSAD Firewall/ UDP flood?

  Well I'm actually trying to block a UDP Flood on the Application port because the string "getstatus" is causing my application to make large output due to a small input to the attacker's IP. I installed PSAD firewall to do the job. psad -S shows 3000,000 logged packets at the application port and top ports in Scan but does not block the IP of the attacker however other IP Addresses with small number of connections are dropped. I'm thinking that since output is also being made to the attacker, this is why its not getting blocked because iptables rate-limiting is also exactly doing the same thing and not blocking the IP where outgoing connection is also made. Any guesses why it won't work?

• Tab stacking in Firefox

  I often use multiple tabs (30 or more). Since I upgraded to Firefox 17, the addon that I had been using to allow tab stacking is no longer compatible. (I believe Tab Mix Plus was the add-on). I'm not interested in changing the color of my tabs or having them listed down the left side of my window. I'd like to have them all along the top of the window in rows. Does anyone know an add-on compatible with Firefox 17?

  Just wanted to see if I understand properly how/when one can change the "Large icon" for their iOS app in iTunes Connect. Questions are in bold below. To start, first the facts (as I gather) from version 6.6 of the iTC guide (March 2, 2011): The Large Icon is a "locked" piece of version information "You will only be permitted to edit Locked version information when your app is in an Editable state" The "Editable" states are: Prepare For Upload Waiting For Upload Waiting For Review Waiting For Export Compliance Upload Received Rejected Developer Rejected Invalid Binary Missing Screenshot Am I missing anything up until this point? If not, then am I correct to say that the only time I can change an app's Large Icon is when I update the application? Here's a more specific use case: My app is currently on sale, version 2.0 I have version 2.1 ready, and I want the update to coincide with a sale, so I also put a "SALE" banner on top of my large icon (what most devs are doing) I have to upload this "SALE" Large Icon when I upload the binary. If I wait until it's been reviewed, it's too late, and I'll have developer-reject the binary so I can fix it. Is this correct? Say I want the sale to last a week. So at the end of that week, I'll want to switch my Large Icon back to the pre-"SALE" version. Will I necessarily have to upload a new binary at that time? (Also posted on the Developer Forums, but it's getting no love there...)

• Wessty: Live with HTML 5 (2011 Speaker Tour)

  That’s right: Wessty is on tour. Okay, the banner and the tour is a little over the top, but I am really excited about my upcoming speaking engagements to spread the word about HTML 5! I have already kicked off the tour with the Winnipeg Code Camp last weekend with the world premiere of HTML 5 for .NET Pro presentation, and the turn out fantastic. It was the last presentation of the day, but we still had some great questions about the new standard and got to see how HTML 5 can fit into .NET web applications today. In any case, above you can see the confirmed presentations that I will be doing so far in 2011, but there are a few more events that I have heard about that I hope to add to that list. Ultimately, expect that list to be updated over the course of the year as the year is young and there are plenty of conferences coming up! From edge a, only one triangle is visible, the other one is in the back. Same for edge d. Also, in order to determine what color the current pixel should be, each polygon has a flag which can either be 'in' or 'out', depending upon where on the scanline we currently are. Flags are flipped according to the intersection of the scanline with the edges. Now, as we go from a to d (because all edges are intersected with the scanline at that vertex), this happens: the triangle behind triangle 1 and triangle 1 itself are set 'in', then 2 is set in and 1 is 'out', then 3 is set 'in', 2 is 'out' and finally 3 is 'out' and the one behind it is set 'in', which is not the desired behavior because we only need the triangles which are facing us to be set 'in', the rest should be 'out'. How do process the edges in the Active Edge List (a list of edges that are currently intersected by the scanline) so the right polys are set 'in'? Also, I should mention that the edges are unique, which means there exists an array of edges in the data structure of the icosahedron which are pointed to by edge pointers in each of the triangles.

• Why do my download speeds drastically vary during a download?

  I watch the download speed rise and fall like waves in a storm. At night, during low bandwidth usage I have achieve speeds as high as 3.23 M/sec but the watch them decline to 250 K/sec. and then climb back up. Over and over. During the day my best is around 1.67 M/sec with lows into the 65 K/sec. On top of this, why does a download need to slow down when approaching the end of the download? It's not like a multi-hundred ton train needing to decrease speed as it approaches the station.

  This question is about "FTP over SSL", if I understand correctly FTPS and HTTPS are just the standard FTP and HTTP protocols running on top of SSL, is this correct? The actual question is: is the certificate that you use for FTPS the exact same that you can use for HTTPS? or are there any differences? To give you some context, I need to get a certificate for an FTPS server, I know I can generate one but it needs to be from an certificate authority, I just need to make sure that I can use the same type of certificate that we use here for HTTPS, otherwise need to know what type of certificate I need to get
