    I'm running a certain script that is using a non-root user to do the following... mkdir: cannot create directory `/srv/www/example.com/releases' *** [err :: 12.23.45.789] : Permission denied How would I allow user xyz to have permanent permissions to do so and still keep this web server secure? Also is it possible to make it recursive for all subfolders? I know its probably chmod something but I'm not that linux savy, thanks.

    I have a domain was registered at godaddy named http://mysite.com/. I logged into godaddy and I went to All Products Domains Domain Management. I clicked on the appropriate domain and it took me to the Domain Details page. I clicked Launch under DNS Manager and it took me to the Zone File Editor. I noticed that notify.mysite.com was pointing to an IP address pointing to a dead server, so I switched it to an operating server. Then I pinged the domain to see where it was pointing to and it was correctly pointing to the working server. So I copied the default configuration under sites-available: sudo cp default notify.mysite.com. And then I made some edits to it to have it point to a different document root to serve files at a different port: Listen 1740 Listen 64.135.xx.xxx:1740 #I also tried this as well: NameVirtualHost 64.135.xx.xxx:1740 <VirtualHost 64.135.xx.xxx:1740> ServerAdmin [email protected] ServerName notify.mysite.com DocumentRoot /var/www/test/public <Directory /var/www/test/public> Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/error.log LogLevel warn CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/access.log combined </VirtualHost> Then I enabled the virtual host. Then I went to the document root and added an index.html file with some text in it. Then I restarted apache. The restart gave no errors. Then I type the correct domain in URL: http://notify.mysite.com:1740/ and I get: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to notify.mysite.com:1740 Somehow it took out all my other sites. Now even the ones that were responding on port 80 are no longe responding, even though I did not touch the virtual hosts for them. I get this message now: Oops!   • Don't show hidden applications when using Command-Tab

    Hi, I'm wondering if there's a way to not show hidden applications in the list of running apps when using Command-Tab ? LiteSwitch (http://www.proteron.com/) sort of does what I want, except it grays out hidden applications, but I want them to not appear at all. I use hidden applications as a sort of 'I'll get to later, or don't bother me now' method, so it would be great if Command-Tab could honor that (the same was Expose does). Thanks.

    I can see from this page here: http://www.linuxatemyram.com/ That the correct amount of free ram is on the "-/+ buffers/cache" line. The extra ram being used is for disk caching. However, I noticed that the total amount of memory used listed in "-/+ buffers/cache" line is significantly less than the sum total of the "RES" column of the processes shown in top. And AFAIK, the "RES" column is how much physical memory is being used by a process. How do you explain this discrepancy?

    I have a php script which uploads images to a folder. I have these permissions on the upload folder: drwxrwxr-- 4 user user 4096 2010-06-02 16:20 temp_images Shouldn't these permissions be enough for files to be uploaded to the folder? But this doesn't work. It only works when I set the permissions to 777. "user" is added to the www-data group, still no luck. Any ideas why?

    I've been a fan of enso http://www.humanized.com/enso/ for quite a while, but for the past several years I've had problems with it crashing, I've never been able to get it work reliably with Windows 7. Has anyone had any luck with this? I've tried the open source edition but it hasn't been any better (when I can get it to install at all) and development is moving pretty slowly. Has anyone had any luck getting enso to work reliably on Vista or 7?

    i have a 1and1 account dedicated linux machine never had a problem with it. httpd and mysqld seem to be running just fine. ping and trace are also fine.. one domain on the machine is www.hundig.com any ideas where i could look why it is so slow or not loading at all? when i reboot it seems faster. just rebooting httpd doesnt change anything.

    I've been trying to follow Scott Hanselman's post on installing the Win8 RP on a vhd, using the win8 .iso on a dvd, but the install wont start.
