  • Can a virus infect an ISO file?

    - by Frederick
I feel that it's going to be very difficult for a virus to infect an ISO file. What's your experience? Have you seen it happening ever? Is it not nearly unlikely? I ask because I've just found that my computer is infected and I wish to salvage as much stuff as possible. So I was wondering if I could keep my ISO files.

  • Fedora 11 System - Failed Hard Drive Removed, and Boot gets GRUB Hard Disk Error

    - by Mindful
Greetings, I have a machine with a 120GB ATA drive that has what I thought to be non-essential data on it. I also have a 320GB SATA hard drive with the OS/Application/Files (good data I want to keep). My 120GB ATA is failing I believe, as my computer kept slowing to a halt. However, when I move the drive from BIOS my computer will not start, says "GRUB Hard Disk Error". I know that my Fedora system has an LVM setup. I am looking to just remove the 120GB drive from "the mix", and just have one hard drive. How do I recover ? Thank you. I have access to a Linux Live CD right now and can make any changes. However, it won't boot into my OS - it fails. UPDATE: here's my Grub.Conf # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd1,0) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 # initrd /initrd-version.img #boot=/dev/sda1 default=0 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd1,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title Fedora (2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11.i686.PAE) root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11.i686.PAE ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11.i686.PAE.img title Fedora (2.6.30.9-102.fc11.i686.PAE) root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.30.9-102.fc11.i686.PAE ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.30.9-102.fc11.i686.PAE.img title Fedora (2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.PAE) root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.PAE ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.PAE.img title Fedora (2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686) root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.img title Fedora (2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686) root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686.img title Fedora (2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.i686) root (hd1,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.i686 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet initrd /initrd-2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.i686.img title Upgrade to Fedora 10 (Cambridge) kernel /upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade repo=hd::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade stage2=http://chi-10g-1-mirror.fastsoft.net/pub/linux/fedora/linux/releases/10/Fedora/i386/os/images/install.img ks=hd:UUID=f11769ba-29bc-46de-8c40-a949720a438e:/upgrade/ks.cfg initrd /upgrade/initrd.img title Win rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1

  • How to copying OS X account settings to a new user account?

    - by Donna Crain
I accidentally renamed the username of my account on my Mac (running OS X 10.4.11) and tried renaming back to what it was but now I have two accounts (the one I want to use which has all my preferences, applications, mail boxes, etc., and the new one). Is it possible to copy my settings from my original account into this new user name? When I open my computer, it defaults to this new account, and I cannot gain access to all my work documents, mail settings etc.

  • Reverse KVM solution

    - by aksamit
I need to setup a computer so that it can be operated from two locations. The locations are about 20 meter from each other and the user wants the experience to be the same from both locations, i.e. no remote desktop or anything like that and preferably a seamless switch. So basically I need a double set of, monitor, keyboard and mouse, and then of course link it together by some kind of suitable hardware.

  • Why is the Task Manager Total Physical Memory not 2048 MB or 2 GB

    - by Dorothy
I found 3 numbers for the Total Physical Memory: In the Task Manager under the Performance tab: 1978 MB In Computer Properties: 2 GB And running wmic computersystem get TotalPhysicalMemory /format:list in the command line: 2074554368 Bites Number 1 matches Number 3 except Number 1 is rounded. When I convert Number 3 to GB 2074554368 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 I don't quite get 2 GB. I get 1.93207932 GB. Why does Number 1 and Number 3 not match Number 2?

    - by DavidB
Installing the new Malwarebytes 2.0 put a shortcut on my desktop that I want to remove, but dragging it to the recycle bin shows this message: I am an administrator on this computer, so normally clicking "Continue" solves the problem, but it didn't work here. Instead, I got this message. How can I resolve this? I have tried using the built in super administrator account to remove it, but that does not work either.

  • How to enable .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8 without downloading it?

    - by Diogo
Since I installed Windows 8 Preview on my personal computer, during the installation of some programs and drivers(Windows 7 ones) started to pop me a message warning that .Net Framework 3.5 was needed: I could use "Install this feature", start to download some dependencies(300MB) and that's it, but I don't want to have to download it every time I want to enable this feature on every machine that I install Windows 8. There is some way to install .Net 3.5 on Windows 8 without having to download the entire Framework from Microsoft?

  • How to troubleshoot a hardware problem on linux?

    - by Jack
Just to note I am not having a problem at the moment, but have had previously so it sparked my curiosity... When a computer locks up suddenly to so caps lock flashes incessantly and the only possibility to restart....how do you troubleshoot what is causing it? On Windows there would be some errors in the event log...on Linux it seems there is no opportunity for anything to be written to the log, making it hard to troubleshoot... In this case, how would you troubleshoot the problem through linux?

  • Removing phantom applications from Application Pools in IIS7

    - by Col
I have an application in one of my application pools that has a virtual path of '/Site/login.aspx'. I want to remove it but it no longer exists on my computer and it's causing me issues setting up AppFabric. I understand that you can remove these phantom applications by recreating the application in IIS and then hitting Remove. That will get rid of the application from the pool but in this case I can't recreate the application due to the /login.aspx in the virtual path Any ideas how I remove this erroneous entry? Thanks
