The writer discusses that, although the future of transport might lie with electric cars, there is concern regarding whether we'll be able to build the market and infrastructure required to support them, before carbon and oil constraints create difficulties in powering the vehicles. Of course, the increasing use of Electric vehicles (EVs) is going to put excessive pressure on energy grids, as large volumes of electricity will need to be directed to charging points, which in turn must handle fluctuating demand at peak times. EVs are increasing in popularity as a sustainable method of transport to reduce carbon consumption, and electric utilities will have the opportunity, and the challenge, to quickly determine the best methods to fuel these vehicles and accommodate the associated increases in demand for energy. Critically, efficient software is required to provide diagnostic and predictive capabilities related to EV refuelling - for example, anticipated electricity flow will need to be addressed as the number of EVs on the road increases, and electricity will need to be directed to specific areas on-demand as vehicles attempt to recharge en-mass. But a smart grid infrastructure can meet these demands, intelligently. The implementation of a smart grid is not in the distant future, it is an achievable reality for utilities via simple installation of new software and technologies, which can be done incrementally for those facing existing legacy systems or concerned with upfront costs. The smart grid is integral to the monitoring and control of energy use as well as the future-proofing of the energy grid. • Database Vault integration available

  One of the major features of Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 is the provision of a base solution for integration to the Database Vault product. Database Vault is part of Oracle’s security portfolio of product and allows database user permissions to be locked down to only allow appropriate users appropriate access to the product data. By default, when you install the product database, administrators and SYSDBA users have full DML (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE access) to the schemas they own and in the case of the SYSDBA users, all schemas on the database. This can be perceived as an issue. Database Vault allows an additional layer of security to disable inappropriate access. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework, a prebuilt Database Vault solution has been provided to provide base DML access to product data for product users only. The solution is shipped with the database installation files and includes a set of SQL files to create, disable, enable and delete the Database Vault objects. The solution contains a Database Vault Realm, RuleSets, Rules and Command Rules that can be used as is or extended to meet site specific needs. The solution is consistent with other Database Vault solutions provided for other Oracle applications such as PeopleSoft, E-Business Suite, JD-Edwards and Siebel. Customers familiar with the database vault solutions for those products will recognize the similarities between the solutions. • WordPress injection?

  I don't really know how to express my problem, so bear with me. This is a bit hard to explain. I have a Wordpress installation, the latest, and often (once a day) my site redirects users to the /wp-admin/install.php file. Asking for my login credentials of course. I have tried reinstalling WordPress and still have not been able to figure what they are doing. That happens regularly. Also, a few hours later, I am able to see my site normally. Hope this makes sense. I suspect there myst be some database DoS that allows them to inject a redirect of some sort into my admin area, thus redirecting the user to said directory (install.php). But that's just me. I really have no clue what else could they be doing. I looked at the source code from several php files and noted some of them don't include a ? tag. Could that be an issue? My hosting company is iPage, I've contacted them and they say there's nothing wrong with my files. Anyone have a clue? I can paste the code to any source file.

• Cannot ping any computers on LAN

  I havem't been able to find a straight forward answer on this yet. I'm hoping people here are able to help! Keep in mind that I'm a complete beginner at this - this is the first installation i've done for any LINUX systems ever so please keep that in mind when answering this question. We are a complete Windows shop, using nothing but Microsoft products but looking into the value of OpenStalk however have been having problems getting Ubuntu Server installed and speaking to the network. The machine is getting an IP address which is telling me that some sort of DHCP activity is working but I'm not able to ping any computer on our network as well as not able to connect to the internet. Every time I try to ping i'm getting; Destination Host Unreachable I've tried using modifying the resolv.conf file with our static details to match my Windows 7 machine still with no luck. Even tried disabling the firewall on Ubuntu Server 11 and no luck. Any ideas? Please let me know if there is any information you need from the server and I'll post up.

• Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools Screencast

  Microsoft just released the Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools extension and it is awesome. A summary of all the features can be found here and it is available in the Visual Studio Gallery here. There are a bunch of great features but, in my opinion, the best one is the replacement for the Add Reference dialog. This gives sub-string search capabilities as well as the ability to add multiple references without having to continually re-open the dialog. For this feature alone, you should install the Pro Power Tools right now. There are a few blogs posts that do a good job describing all the features but what I wanted to do here was to post a quick screencast (7 minutes) that shows the features that I think are really cool. I show most (but not all) of the features focusing on the ones I think are the best. • How to restore Windows7 after restore ubuntu bootloader?

  At first I will describe my situation in a few points: I have installed Windows7, and then Ubuntu 11.04 on my machine. Then everything works fine and at start of system I have screen from linux where I can choose the system. Then I reinstall Windows7 and install Windows 8 on other partition. Then I can choose between Win7 and win8 when I start system. Then I need my Ubuntu back so I want restore my bootloader from Ubuntu. I boot Ubuntu from USB and in terminal write this commands: sudo fdisk -l Then I get: /dev/sda1 1 13 104391 de Dell Utility /dev/sda2 14 2805 22425601 5 Rozszerzona /dev/sda3 * 2805 41968 314572800 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda4 41968 60802 151282688 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda5 14 2445 19530752 83 Linux /dev/sda6 2445 2805 2893824 82 Linux swap / Solaris Next commands: sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc sudo chroot /mnt grub-install /dev/sda I get Installation finished. No error reported.. And when I start my machine I have old Ubuntu start screen to choose system. Ubuntu works well. But There are no Windows 8 option. But my primary problem is when I choose Windows 7 I have: error: no such device ... error: no such disk so I have no idea what can I do. I really need both systems to work. Any help would be appreciated.

• ubuntu mass deployment kickstart file how/where?

  i've succesfully been able to prepare an OEM image that is ready to be cloned and installed in about 1100 machines. My only issue right now is that when the machine boots for the first time it asks for the basic setup questions. I think I have the kickstart file ready, but I dont know how to call it. My logic says that before I run the "prepare to ship to end user" script that I have to modify the boot parameters to call the ks file so the ks.cfg file goes with each drive. My issue is I cant figure out how to modify the boot parameters. Also, i dont know if there is a log i can check to see if its actually calling it or not. I am using ubuntu 12.04 desktop x64. I am trying on /etc/default/grub by modifying one line from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash ks=file:/ks.cfg" then I run an update-grub but its not working. • Dualboot harddisk encryption

  I have a system with both Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7 and I want to encrypt the whole harddisk or at least some of my partitions. My partition table is something like this (the ones marked with * are the ones that need to be encrypted): Windows boot reserved partition *Windows system partition (ntfs) *Windows data partition (ntfs) Ubuntu root partition (ext4) *Ubuntu home partition (ext4) Ubuntu swap As I said I don't need to encrypt the whole disk. What is the best way to accomplish this? Maybe something (TrueCrypt?) where I enter the password before the system boots so that it decrypts the whole hdd? Or maybe individual encryption using Windows-only encryption (for Windows partitions) and Ubuntu home encryption (well, for Ubuntu home partition)? By the way, I almost always use Ubuntu, so it would be nice if I could continue to boot Ubuntu by default but have an option to boot Windows too (like in grub). EDIT: I was thinking of doing this: encrypting ubuntu home with eCryptfs (I think this is used to encrypt home when selected during installation). Encrypting Windows partitions with TrueCrypt. Still having Grub as a bootloader, when I choose ubuntu everything goes as normal (home is decrypted when login in). When I choose windows the TrueCrypt password prompt shows and windows boots.

• Boot failure randomly. Can someone help?

  I often get stuck at the boot on battery. I can suspend and hibernate without any trouble (even on battery). If I plug the energy cable everything goes right most of the time (edited June 13). Adding "acpi=off" doesn't solve the issue. Disabling power save from LAN at BIOS doesn't solve this too. Memory test seems to be ok: I can even compile a kernel without a problem: Has someone a tip for this? (I have the same questions marks in my mind as the image shows if not more :-/ ) obs.: this is an upgraded installation from Natty alpha. edited I (May 22): I've installed a brand new final 11.04 and got the bug again. edited II (June 13): I thought it was solved but it is not. After spending eight days off, the same problem happened even with the power cable connected. I had to reboot about 6 times until success. edited III (June 14): I can boot (even with battery) if I disconnect the cable and take off the battery for a few seconds. This lead me to conclude that maybe something is kept into memory of some hardware. Maybe or maybe not related but I also have touchpad issues (jumps) with this machine. edited IV (June 25): I opened gconf-editor and went to apps gnome-power-manager and disabled everything possibly related to suspend or hibernate. No help. Also I grabbed a Fedora live usb pendrive and got the same problem: So I think it is a hardware problem related issue.

  We are currently in the process of upgrading one of our applications to .Net 4.0. Aside from us geeks wanting to always use latest and greatest technologies, an immediate business need for Silverlight 4.0 features justified our upgrade endeavor. The following is a summary of some issues we ran into with our web project:   For security purposes, the IIS 7 .Net 4.0 ISAPI filter is disabled. “Allow” it from the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions screen as shown:   Figure 1 - Allowing ASP.Net 4.0 ISAPI Filter   By default the Web Setup Project only requires the .Net Framework 4 Client Profile to be installed on target system, which offers a lighter weight install for client machines consuming .Net 4.0 applications. However, using certain .Net 4.0 features requires the full .Net 4.0 Framework as outlined in this link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc656912.aspx. We hence needed to update the installer to require the complete .Net 4.0 Framework on the target machine and to prompt for its installation if needed.   To accomplish this goal, we updated the installer’s launch conditions to check for .Net 4.0 as well as the installer prerequisites as shown:     Figure 2- Ensure Web Setup Project runs on full .Net 4.0 version Figure 3 - Launch Conditions screen Figure 4 - Set launch condition to .Net 4.0. • Unable to remove the lock by normal means

  I've been installing ubuntu restricted extras via the software center. Everything was going well at first, but then the installation process froze on 'applying changes' stage. I've had this in the past already, and usually just hitting the 'cancel' button helped, but not this time. Obviously, the install process has placed a lock, and I couldn't issue any apt-get commands. then i've tried doing what was suggested here Fixing Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock : sudo fuser -cuk /var/lib/dpkg/lock; sudo rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/lock but it seemed to me that it has only killed my X server. Okay, i've just pressed the power button on my PC, and restarted, hoping that the lock was finally off and i could reinstall the stuff. No dice. when I open the software center, I still have one operation in process, a weird one: " Searching | Cancelling ". The 'cancel' button is either inactive, or it just does nothing. So I've become desperate and decided to write here. How do I fix the problem? Can't install anything on a fresh ubuntu 12.04 :) Thanks in advance

• How to create a deb package that installs a series of files

  I would like to create a brand new deb package to install series of files. If at all possible, I would like to untar the folder containing these files as part of the installation into a known folder location. Failing that, some knowledge how to package the source folders and files would be very useful. Question is - is this possible and if so - how? Lets give an example: ~/mypluginfolder/ contains the files x, y, a subfolder called abc and inside that another file called z. I want to tar this folder: tar -cvf myfiles.tar ~/mypluginfolder I presume my debian package would look like myfiles.tar.gz myfiles+ppafoss_0.1-1/ myfiles.tar DEBIAN changelog, compat, control, install, rules source Is it possible to somehow untar myfiles.tar to a known folder location for example /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/ Thus the final result would be: /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/mypluginfolder /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/mypluginfolder\x /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/mypluginfolder\y /usr/share/rhythmbox/plugins/mypluginfolder\abc\z If - presuming launchpad needs source, advice is sought as to where I should drop the source folders and files into the deb package structure. This will eventually will become a series of individual launchpad PPA packages. What I prefer (but may not be able to achieve...) is to keep my packaging to a minimum - create a series of packages from a template and adjust the bare minimum (changelog etc + the tar file/file & folder structure).

• Many small scripts, one repository or multiple?

  A co-worker and myself have run into an issue that we have multiple opinions on. Currently we have a git repository that we are keeping all of our cronjobs in. There are about 20 crons and they are not really related except for the fact that they are all small python scripts and essential for some activity. We are using a fabric.py file to deploy and a requirements.txt file to manage requirements for all of the scripts. Our issue is basically, do we keep all of these scripts in one git repository or should we be separating them out into their own repositories? By keeping them in one repository it is easier to deploy them onto one server. We can use just one cron file for all the scripts. However this feels wrong, as the 20 cronjobs are not logically related. Additionally, when using one requirements.txt file for all the scripts, it's hard to figure out what the dependencies are for a particular script and they all have to use the same versions of packages. We could separate all of the scripts out into their own repositories but this creates 20 different repositories that need to be remembered and dealt with. Most of these scripts are not very large and that solution seems to be overkill. A related question is, do we use one big crontab file for all cronjobs, or a separate file for each? If each has their own, how does one crontab's installation avoid overwriting the other 19? This also seems like a pain as there would then by 20 different cron files to keep track of. In short, our main question and issue is do we keep them all closely bundled as one repository or do we separate them out into their own repository with their own requirements.txt and fabfile.py? We feel like we're also probably looking over some really simple solution. Is there an easier way to deal with this issue?
