• ASP.NET - fast Segmented downoad of file through webservice

  Hi, Im doing this project where i need to download files through a webservice (images, videos). The download MUST go through an existing webservice. The existing webservice was made when there were no need to upload and download files but the project has changed and now we need to do It through a webservice. Right now I have implemented the download as a method that returns a byte[], I open a streamreader and resds the entire file into a byte[] and returns it to my method. This is working file on small files <~1Mb, above it takes too long time. I want to show some progress (e.g. when the user downlaods a 20Mb video) which i cannot do right now. And i want to make it download much faster (is a strategy to use multithreading and several threads that downloads a part of the file?). It is within a WPF application i need to do this. Any ideas on how to approach this?

• Different return XML in a WCF Operation

  I am writing a service to a international HTTP standard, and there is one method that can return three different XML results, call them Single, Multiple and Error. Now I've written an IXmlSerializable class that can consume each of these results and generate them. However, WCF seems to insist that I can only have a single return XML root name. I have to choose an XmlRoot for my custom object of either Single, Multiple or Error. How can I set up WCF so that I can choose at runtime what the root will be? • Squeak - SUnit Testing for Errors

  I have been suggested to use should:rise in my test case to test for errors that a method might raise. For some reason it does not work as axpected, so I want to verify that I'm doing it right. Here is the code in the test case: self should: [aMyClass compareTo: 'This is a string'] raise: 'invalid input'. My compareTo/1 method looks like this: (aMyClass isKindOf: MyClass) ifFalse: [self error: 'invalid input'.]. The test runner output is that there is "1 errors". Thank you.

What I need is a grandParent() method to complement the Mootools parent(), but it appears that one does not exist. What's the best way to accomplish this in either Mootools or pure JavaScript? • Android - Transforming widgets within transformed widgets and the resulting usability issues.

  Hello. I'm new to Android application development and I'm currently experimenting with various UI ideas. In the image below, you can see a vertically scrolling list of horizontally scrolling galleries (and also textviews as you can see). I'm also doing some matrix and camera transformations which I will come to in a minute. For the background of the list elements, I use green. Blue is the background of the galleries, and red is the background for the images. These are just for my benefit of learning. The galleries being used are extended classes where I overrode the drawChild method to perform a canvas scale operation in order for the image closest to the center (width) to be larger than the others. The list view going vertically, I overrode the drawChild method and used the camera rotations from lack of depth dimension in the canvas functionality. The items in the list are scaled down and rotated relative to their position's proximity to the center (height). I understood that scrolling and clicking would not necessarily follow along with the image transforms, but it appears as though the parent Gallery class's drawing is constrained to the original coordinates as well (see photo below). I would love to hear any insight any of you have regarding how I can change the coordinates of the galleries in what is rendered via gallery scroll and the touch responsiveness of said gallery. Images in the gallery are not same dimensions, so don't let that throw you in looking at the image below Thanks in advance! Ben link to image (could not embed) -- Update: I was using my test application UI and noticed that when I got the UI to the point of the linked image and then I touched the top portion of the next row in the list, the gallery updated to display the proper representation. So, I added a call to clearFocus() in the drawChild method and that resulted in more accurate drawing. It does seem a tad slower, and since I'm on the Incredible, I'm worried it is a bloated solution. In any event, I would still appreciate any thoughts you have regarding the best way to have the views display properly and how to translate the touch events in the gallery's new displayed area to its touchable coordinates so that scrolling on the actual images works when the gallery has moved. • Completion block not being called. How to check validity?

  I have this method which takes a block, but that block isn't always called. Sometimes this program counter just blows right past the call to completion() in the code above. I don't see why this would be as the calling code always passes a literal block of code as input. If you're curious of the output of the line containing the addressof operator, it's always something different, but never 0 or nil. What would cause completion not to be executed?

  Ok here is my problem : Before i start the description, let me to tell you that I have googled up a lot and I am posting this question for a good optimal solution :) i am building a rest service on WCF to get userProfiles... the user can filter userProfiles by giving something like userProfiles?location=London now i have the following method GetUserProfiles(string firstname, string lastname, string age, string location) the sql query string i built is: select firstname, lastname, .... from profiles where (firstName like '%{firstname}%') AND (lastName like '%{lastName}%') ....and so on with all variables being replaced by string formatter. Problem with this is that it filters any row having firstname, lastname, age or location having a null value.... doing something like (firstName like '%{firstName}%' OR firstName IS NULL) would be tedious and the statement would become unmaintanable! (in this example there are only 4 arguments, but in my actual method there are 10) What would be the best solution for this?....How is this situation usually handled? Database used : MySql

  This is what I think of REST architecture. For every resource, there is an unique URI. We can manipulate that object using its URI and HTTP actions [POST, GET, PUT and DELETE]. The HTTP request transfers the representation of the state of that object. In all the texts I have read, REST is explained in a weird and confusing manner. One more thing, RESTFUL implementation in rails produces different urls for different purposes. Like /teams - for 'index' method... /teams/new - for 'new' method and so on. Ain't this moving away from rest, which defines that each resource has one unique URI???

  I have a shared hosting where I have my website and MySQL database. I've installed a open source script for statistics (phpMyVisites) and it started to work very slow lately. It's written using some kind of framework and has many PHP files. I know that to find slow queries I can use slow query log functionality in MySQL. But on this shared hosting I can not use this method because I can not change my.cnf. I don't want to change my statistics script to other and I don't want to mess around with all files of this script to find out where to put diagnostics code to log queries manually. I would like to do it without changes in PHP code. So my question is: How to log slow queries in these coditions?: Can't change my.cnf to enable slow query log Can't change statistics script to other Don't know how scrpt is written and where mysql commands are issued Can't ask my provider for slow query log Is there any method to do this in simple, easy, fast way?

• [C#] What does MissingManifestResourceException mean and how to fix it?

  The situation: I have a class library, called RT.Servers, containing a few resources (of type byte[], but I don't think that's important) The same class library contains a method which returns one of those resources I have a simple program (with a reference to that library) that only calls that single method I get a MissingManifestResourceException with the following message: Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture. Make sure "Servers.Resources.resources" was correctly embedded or linked into assembly "RT.Servers" at compile time, or that all the satellite assemblies required are loadable and fully signed. I have never played around with cultures, or with assembly signing, so I don't know what's going on here. Also, this works in another project which uses the same library. Any ideas? Edit: I checked the .resx file; all the resources are marked as "Culture=neutral" there. Also, I noticed a similar question and went to check the namespace in Resources.Designer.cs, but it's correct (it's "RT.Servers").

• How to implement dynamic queries for MNesia?

  I'm trying to implement a function that generates dynamic queries for MNesia. For example, when function is called with these arguments; dyn_query(list, person, [name, age], ["jack", 21]) I want to query MNesia to list items whose name is "jack" and age is 21 in person table. I've tried to implement this by using qlc:q(ListComprehension) and qlc:string_to_handle("ListComprehension"). First failed because of compile errors, compiler didn't let me to use functions instead of ListComprehentions and variables instead of record names like "Item#Table.Member". Second failed, because erl_eval couldn't handle records and throwed exceptions like {undefined_record, person}. Which method should I use? How could i solve these problems? Or should I use a different method? Thanks.

• Passing array into constructor to use on JList

  I know the title sound confusing and thats because it is. its a bit long so try too stay with me. this is the layout i have my code designed variables constructor methods. im trying too fill a Jlist full on names. i want too get those names using a method. so here goes. in my variables i have my JList. its called contactNames; i also have an array which stores 5 strings which are the contacts names; heres the code for that anyway String contact1; String contact2; String contact3; String contact4; String contact5; String[] contactListNames; JList contactList; simple enough. then in my constructor i have the Jlist defined to fill itself with the contents of the array fillContactList(); JList contactList = new JList(contactListNames); that method fillContactList() is coming up shortly. notice i dont have the array defined in the constructor. so heres my first question. can i do that? define the array to contain something in te constructor rather than filling it fromt the array. now heres where stuff gets balls up. ive created three different methods all of which havent worked. basically im trying to fill the array with all of them. this is the simplest one. it doesnt set the Jlist, it doesnt do anything compilicated. all it trys too do is fill the array one bit at a time public void fillContactList() { for(int i = 0;i<3;i++) { try { String contact; System.out.println(" please fill the list at index "+ i); Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in); contact = in.next(); contactListNames[i] = contact; in.nextLine(); } catch(Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } unfortunately this doesnt qwork. i get the print out to fill it at index 0; i input something and i get a nice big stack trace starting at contactListNames[i] = contact; so my two questions in short are how i define an array in a constructor. and why cant i fill the array from that method. ************************888 **************************888 stack trace by request please fill the list at index 0 overtone java.lang.NullPointerException please fill the list at index 1 at project.AdminMessages.fillContactList(AdminMessages.java:408) at project.AdminMessages.<init>(AdminMessages.java:88) at project.AdminUser.createAdminMessages(AdminUser.java:32) at project.AdminUser.<init>(AdminUser.java:18) at project.AdminUser.main(AdminUser.java:47) it was a null poiinter exception

• Typed Arrays in Gecko 2: Float32Array concatenation and expansion.

  Hi all, I'm a bit confused with Javascript Typed Arrays. What I have several *Float32Array*s, that have no concat method. I'd like to concatenate them all inside another Float32Array, but: as I said before, there is no concatenation method if I try to write past the array length, the array is not expanded (aka this won't work - please note that event.frameBuffer and buffer are both Float32Array and that I don't know what the final length of my buffer will be): var length_now = buffer.length; for (var i = 0; i < event.frameBuffer.length; i += 1) { buffer [length_now + i] = event.frameBuffer[i]; } The only solution I found is to copy the Float32Array in a regular array, that's definitely not what I want. How would you do, stackoverflowers?

• Shutting down a WPF application from App.xaml.cs

  I am currently writing a WPF application which does command-line argument handling in App.xaml.cs (which is necessary because the Startup event seems to be the recommended way of getting at those arguments). Based on the arguments I want to exit the program at that point already which, as far as I know, should be done in WPF with Application.Current.Shutdown() or in this case (as I am in the current application object) probably also just this.Shutdown(). The only problem is that this doesn't seem to work right. I've stepped through with the debugger and code after the Shutdown() line still gets executed which leads to errors afterwards in the method, since I expected the application not to live that long. Also the main window (declared in the StartupUri attribute in XAML) still gets loaded. I've checked the documentation of that method and found nothing in the remarks that tell me that I shouldn't use it during Application.Startup or Application at all. So, what is the right way to exit the program at that point, i. e. the Startup event handler in an Application object?

• System.XML or Regex.Replace?

  I'm generating a large amount of XML documents from a set of values in an Excel file. The only thing that changes for each XML document is the values. I figured the best way to generate these documents was to make a "XML skeleton" (since the XML format never changes) and then plug in symbols like "&%blahNameblahTest", so then I could just preform a Regex.Replace on each value. I will be handing over this project to another developer and I'm wondering if I should convert the project to generate the XML file manually everytime through the System.XML namespace. The only advantages I see to this is ensuring that the XML document is valid. The current method would be more readable than that method, and way faster since I'm generating around 1500 documents.

• iPhone CALayer Stacking Order

  I'm using CALayers to draw to a UITableViewCell. I'm trying to figure out how layers are ordered with the content of the UITableViewCell. For instance: I add labels to the UITableViewCell in my cellForRow:atIndexPath method In the drawRect method of UITableViewCell I draw some content using the current context Also, in drawRect I add a few sublayers So what would be the order of these elements. I know I have zPosition on the CALayers but I'm not sure if they are always on top of any subviews of the UITableViewCell. And I'm not sure where the content that is drawn in drawRect comes in the order. Any help or links to documentation would be great. I have read through the Core Animation Programming Guide and didn't see anywhere where this would be answered.

I thought C#3's improved ability to work with data might help.   Hi folks, First of all, thanks for you time reading my question. I created my own Qt Widget (parent of QWidget) and has a QImage "inside" to manipulate images. The problem I have is the following: when I promote the content of a QScrollArea to my widget, the scroll features doesn't works; I haven't any scroll bar or I can't see any result when I use the method 'ensureVisible(..)'. Inside it add your property, using the testContext argument. //Use ClassInitialize to run code before running the first test in the class [ClassInitialize()] public static void MyClassInitialize(TestContext testContext) { /* * Any user defined testContext.Properties * added here will be erased upon this method exit */ testContext.Properties.Add("key", 1 ) ; // above works but is lost } After leaving MyClassInitialize, properties defined by user are lost. Only the 10 "official" ones are left. This effectively means TestContext.Properties is read only, for users. Which is not clearly documented in MSDN. Please discuss. --DBJ
