• How can I set up private, per-user sections on Joomla?

  For this weekend's GiveCamp project, my team has been tasked with adding some functionality to an existing Joomla-powered website for a non-profit. A certain type of user will login, and have access to a personal area where they can upload files, check for messages, see tasks that have been assigned, etc. Each user would have their own area. They would not be creating pages, and their information would only be visible to themselves (or a site-administrator, of course. No sort of weird HIPAA privacy involved). None of us have worked with Joomla before, but we'd like to help this non-profit. We're not sure if we're searching using the wrong terms, or if we're just not finding it. Is such a solution possible in Joomla? And/or are we better off building some standalone solution that interfaces with the same mySQL database as Joomla?

• Vocabulary: Should I call this apply or map?

  So, I'm tasked with organizing the code and building a library with all the common code among our products. One thing that seems to happen all the time and I wanted to abstract is posted below in pseudocode, and I don't know how to call it (different products have different domain specific implementations and names for it) list function idk_what_to_name_it ( list list_of_callbacks, value common_parameter ): list list_of_results = new list for_each(callback in list_of_callbacks) list_of_results.push(callback(common_parameter)) end for_each return list_of_results end function Would you call this specific construct a list ListOfCallbacks.Map( value value_to_map) method or would it better be value Value.apply(list list_of_callbacks) I'm really curious about this kind of thing. • Maya and Game Engines (i.e. Environment Testing)

  What does it mean if I'm designing an environment and I want to test it in the game engine, to see what its like to "run" [or fly] around my environment? I heard an instructor say that exact thing in a Maya training video and I'd like to know more about "How Game Engines and Maya are related to each other." He stated this would be done to see how things look in "size" (e.g. I assume he meant: 'How big is the cathedral, bridge, wall, building, etc.'). I've tried to research such information but it's too complicated, and detailed. I just want a simplistic response to my query. Thanks to everyone willing to help and not criticize my question.

• Geographic location settings

  I am building an website. It has an .nl domain. Now only my domain is showing up on google.nl I hope I can change this somehow that it could be findable in all google's (like google.com / co.uk) and so on. If I look on google forums. They say go to webmaster tools and change your geographic position over there. But I have added this site and I am not able to change it there because there is no select box. I dont have any idea were to search (yes I searched on google offcourse) or where to ask for this special problem. So maybe here can someone redirect me or explain me what is possible and what not.   Hope you can help me with this, I've searched a lot and I got really confused of what to do here. I'm building a program in C and I need to run it multiple time as I need. So it's going to be like below, process 1 handle all rows on DB table test where process_flag=1 process 2 handle all rows on DB table test where process_flag=2 process 3 handle all rows on DB table test where process_flag=3 and so on How can I make the processes aware of each other, so if process 3 goes down then processes 2 & 3 start working on process_flag=3?

• How do I create a Debian branch for my project on Launchpad?

  I have a project on Launchpad that consists of a single branch (trunk). I would like to create a second branch that contains the Debian packaging for the project (with the intent of creating a build recipe that merges it into the main branch before building). I've done this before by just pushing a local branch to lp:~me/project_name/debian. However, this stacks the branch with trunk, which I don't want (it becomes impossible to delete trunk without deleting the Debian packaging branch - a restriction that has caused problems before). What is the proper way to do this?

• Possible to pass pygame data to memory map block?

  I am building a matrix out of addressable pixels and it will be run by a Pi (over the ethernet bus). The matrix will be 75 pixels wide and 20 pixels tall. As a side project, I thought it would be neat to run pong on it. I've seen some python based pong tutorials for Pi, but the problem is that they want to pass the data out to a screen via pygame.display function. I have access to pass pixel information using a memory map block, so is there anyway to do that with pygame instead of passing it out the video port?   I'm building a Date/Time class with a "configurable quarter" system as follows. User specifies which month the quarter starts at (config) Set of functions to deal with quarters (next quarter, prev quarter, etc) All quarter functions respect the config Now this class is primarily to be used for fiscal quarter calculations. So assuming I have this class with a configurable "quarter" system, would I need another parallel set of functions for calendar quarters too? What are the applications for calendar quarters anyways? By calendar quarters I mean where Q1 is Jan-Mar, and Q4 is Oct-Dec. By fiscal quarters I mean whatever standard your Country uses (in India Q1 starts in April)

• Can someone explain why Chromium is difficult to build for Ubuntu?

  I hope this question is not regarded as a duplicate of Does someone know why the Chromium daily package isn't build anymore? because that question relates to daily builds and not to "stable" Chromium available from the Software Center. So what are the technical difficulties that the Chromium team is facing? A very similar question has been asked in Default Browser Follow-up. I would very much to have an updated Chromium stable on my system. Also, is the problem of building Chromium restricted to 32-bit versions? (I have a 64-bit CPU but just 4 GB RAM and so I'm staying with 32-bit all the way.) I'm asking this partly in the light of the discussions, here for example, about having Chromium as the default web browser in future releases.

• https (SSL) instead of http

  I am building myself a new website, out of privacy and security concerns I am contemplating trying to make it https only. It will be mobile-friendly using media queries but I am concerned--especially for mobile users--about the increased bandwidth. How much will doing so increase my bandwidth or slow load times? For pages where I'm not transferring sensitive information, should I leave external links (to a jQuery library, or a web font for instance) in http? Simply put, I have read articles saying the entire web would be more secure if everything was SSL but my actual knowledge of implementation is limited to payment gateways and log-in pages and such. I apologize for the open-ended nature of the question but anything, even just simple answers to the specific questions is welcomed.

  I want to add the ability to send reminders to people via email and SMS for specific events that they have signed up for on a web application that I am building. The email part is not difficult, but I am wondering where to find a good solution for sending SMS messages. It would also be a plus if this solution allowed two-way SMS communication with my web application so that people would be able to reply with a CONFIRM or CANCEL type of a message. Has anyone implemented something like this? Does anyone know of good tools out there?   I have written one web services using Java. Its already live (Up & Running). During development I have SVN(repository) + Jira for task maintenance + Maven for building the web services. Now i have some small update for my web services and i have created that task in Jira and committed the files in svn with respect to Jira-Id after all testing, etc.. Say my web services is used by 10 clients, we did not give our source code to them. Is there any steps/procedure available to release patch/updates? Is there any way to render/create the change log at the build time (maven). How do i manage the change log for all version or Patch updates during build time? (Automatically)

• Where would you start if you were trying to solve this PDF classification problem?

  We are crawling and downloading lots of companies' PDFs and trying to pick out the ones that are Annual Reports. Such reports can be downloaded from most companies' investor-relations pages. The PDFs are scanned and the database is populated with, among other things, the: Title Contents (full text) Page count Word count Orientation First line Using this data we are checking for the obvious phrases such as: Annual report Financial statement Quarterly report Interim report Then recording the frequency of these phrases and others. So far we have around 350,000 PDFs to scan and a training set of 4,000 documents that have been manually classified as either a report or not. We are experimenting with a number of different approaches including Bayesian classifiers and weighting the different factors available. We are building the classifier in Ruby. My question is: if you were thinking about this problem, where would you start?

  In the coming months we're going to begin a project where we take a system we've built for a client (v1) and rebuild it from scratch. Our goal with v2 is to make it modular, so that this specific client will have their own set of modules they use, then another client may use a different set of modules altogether. The trick here is that Company A might have a series of checkout and user modules that change how that system works. Company B might stick with the standard checkout procedure but customize how products are browsed. What are some good approaches to application architecture when you're building an application from scratch that you want to have a Core that's shared among all clients while still maintaining the flexability for anything to be modified specifically for a client? I've seen CodeIgniter's hooks and don't think that's a good solution as we could end up with 250 hooks and it's still not flexible enough. What are some other solutions? Ideally we won't need to draw a line in the sand.

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 (VMware). I aim to implement OpenMP. Im using gcc 4.5 compiler. I tried to install it by using the command sudo apt-get install gcc 4.5. Afterwards I proceed with gcc -fopenmp foo.c BUT the output was: gcc: foo.c: No such file or directory gcc: no input files –. Now I tried to install the package by using : ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install essential Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package essential. I also tried apt-cache search essential and after that sudo apt-get install essential-dev But the same error again, E: Unable to locate package essential-dev Any solution,please? • Can I use metro style interface in my own web application?

  I am wondering if I would need to license the Metro style or if I can just freely use it in my own applications. I mean, is it patented or protected in any way that would prevent me from building my own implementation? I effectively would like to copy the visible part of it. • Writing a spell checker similar to "did you mean"

  I'm hoping to write a spellchecker for search queries in a web application - not unlike Google's "Did you mean?" The algorithm will be loosely based on this: http://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2006T13 In short, it generates correction candidates and scores them on how often they appear (along with adjacent words in the search query) in an enormous dataset of known n-grams - Google Web 1T - which contains well over 1 billion 5-grams. I'm not using the Web 1T dataset, but building my n-gram sets from my own documents - about 200k docs, and I'm estimating tens or hundreds of millions of n-grams will be generated. This kind of process is pushing the limits of my understanding of basic computing performance - can I simply load my n-grams into memory in a hashtable or dictionary when the app starts? Is the only limiting factor the amount of memory on the machine? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Perhaps putting all my n-grams in a graph database with some sort of tree query optimisation? Could that ever be fast enough?

As a rough example of a problem that arises; should build tools have any responsibility to the configuration and execution of acceptance tests when they are further down the pipeline than actually building the artifact?   I have decided, as a arrogant geek, to build my own home ventilation and heating system, and will try to do this as my little project. I have always been annoyed with the lack of good ventilation systems at work, so I accept building my own is arrogant. Does anyone know about a device I can interact with that allows me to get temperature and humidity that I can interact with using C#? I cannot get it from the Internet because I need to get the humidity from my server "room", so I can control the dehumidifier there. Similar with temperature, outside is not that important. It would be a huge plus if the sensors had some sort of wireless access.

  I am building a social media site that is similar is structure to twitter and facebook.com where unauthenticated users who go to https://mysite.com will see a login + sign-up page, and authenticated users who go to https://mysite.com will see their timeline. My question is, what is the best practice (using Google Analytics) for tracking these two different types of users who are viewing completely different content but are visiting the same URL. I tried searching the Google Analytics docs but couldn't find what they suggested for this scenario. Perhaps I just don't know what keywords to search for. Thanks in advance for any help.

  Are you trying to build a SQL Server database project and getting   The imported project "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\SSDT\Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.SqlTasks.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the <Import> declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk.
