• Pen drive cannot be mounted

  I get the following message when I insert my pen drive to USB port. I am unable to format it as well. • ASP.NET MVC: Moving code from controller action to service layer

  I fixed one controller action in my application that doesn’t seemed good enough for me. It wasn’t big move I did but worth to show to beginners how nice code you can write when using correct layering in your application. As an example I use code from my posting ASP.NET MVC: How to implement invitation codes support. Problematic controller action Although my controller action works well I don’t like how it looks. It is too much for controller action in my opinion. We have working functionality in wrong place and we should do something about it. Service layer I add layers to my application very carefully because I don’t like to use hand grenade to kill a fly. When I see real need for some layer and it doesn’t add too much complexity I will add new layer. Right now it is good time to add service layer to my small application. This way I can keep error messages and their retrieval away from controller and in controller I just mediate error message from service to view. Controller Now all the code is moved to service layer and we need also some modifications to controller code so it makes use of users service. I don’t show here DI/IoC details about how to give service instance to controller. GetAccess() action of controller looks like this right now. In the case of error user is shown access code claiming view with error message that ClaimAccessCode() method returns as output parameter. If everything goes fine then access code is reserved for current user and user is authenticated. Conclusion When controller action grows big you have to move code to layers it actually belongs. In this posting I showed you how I moved access code claiming functionality from controller action to user service class that belongs to service layer of my application. As the result I have controller action that coordinates the user interaction when going through access code claiming process. Controller communicates with service layer and gets information about how access code claiming succeeded.

• Documentation often ommits to specify which flavour of regular expression to use, so is there a default flavour that we should all be familiar with?

  Often I come across documentation that says "use a regular expression here" I have to spend quite some time digging around trying to work out which regular expression format they are expecting. As far as I can tell, there are many types of regular expression. But, at my last place of work I was made to feel stupid when I suggested adding some text to our User Documentation to specify the type of regular expression to be used. When someone says "a regular expression" what is the regular expression syntax most people expect and where is it documented? Update: I was prompted to single-out some examples - but no disrespect to these great projects: eregi docs page is not particularly helpful in explaining expected syntax. Nor can I easily work out the syntax expected here if i just land on the page from a search. No explicit mention of the regular expression pattern expected by PatternExpectation() on the SimpleTest page. etc. etc. here is a highly voted SO answer that seems to assume there is only one flavour of regular expressions.

• Exploring MDS Explorer by Mark Nelson

  Recently, I posted about my colleague Olivier’s MDS Explorer tool, which is a great way to get a look inside your MDS repository. I have been playing around with it a little bit, nothing much really, just some cosmetic stuff, but you might like to take a look at it. I made it format the documents nicely with proper indentation, and with line numbers and a nicer editor. It also will warn you if you are about to open a large document so that you know it has not crashed, but that you just have to be patient. And I added some icons and stuff. • Can't boot Ubuntu 12.04 from external Hard Drive using Mac

  Recently, I upgraded the RAM and hard drive on my Early 2008 Macbook to improve the performance. Rather than throw away the old hard drive, I bought an enclosure for it to turn it into an external hard drive, and, since all the data was migrated to my new drive, I decided to install Ubuntu on it for funsies (note: I am a near-total Ubuntu n00b). My first attempt to install Ubuntu didn't work (it gave me errors about not being able to find the BIOS or something), but my second attempt finished successfully (can't remember what, if anything, I did different). However, when I plug the external drive into my Macbook, it gives me a message saying it can't read the disk. Moreover, when I go into the Startup Manager (i.e.: what you get when you turn on the Macbook while holding the option key), the external drive is not one of the available startup disks. I thought this might be because I have an older Macbook, so I tried booting it with my mom's Late 2011 Macbook, and got the same results. Then I tried booting it through my dad's Dell laptop that runs Windows 7, and that time it worked. This is really counter intuitive to me, since the hard drive originally came from a Macbook, so if anything you'd think it would be less compatible with the Windows laptop than the Macbook. In case it helps, here's a link to a picture of how I set up the partition table while doing the install (not shown there is the fact that I checked the "Format?" box next to the /boot partition, since it gave me a warning when I tried to continue the installation without doing so) Anyone have any clue at all? If it helps, the hard drive I'm using is a 120GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive.

• Distribute Sort Sample Service

  How it works? Using the front-end of the service, a user can specify a size in MB for the input data set to sort. Algorithm CreateAndSplit The CreateAndSplit task generates the input data and stores them as 10 blobs in the utility storage. The URLs to these blobs are packaged as Separate work items and written to the queue. · Separate The Separate task reads the blobs with the random numbers created in the CreateAndSplit task and places the random numbers into buckets. The interval of the numbers that go into one bucket is chosen so that the expected amount of numbers (assuming a uniform distribution of the numbers in the original data set) is around 100 kB. Each bucket is represented as a blob container in utility storage. Whenever there are 10 blobs in one bucket (i.e., the placement in this bucket is complete because we had 10 original splits), the separate task will generate a new Sort task and write the task into the queue. · Sort The Sort task merges all blobs in a single bucket and sorts them using a standard sort algorithm. The result is stored as a blob in utility storage. · Concat The concat task merges the results of all Sort tasks into a single blob. This blob can be downloaded as a text file using this Web page. • pdflatex reads .eps files saved in OS/X, but not in Ubuntu

  Sorry if this is a stupid question; I'm a newbie. I am preparing a manuscript in LaTeX. The journal (Physical Biology, an IOP publication) requires that figures be saved in .eps format, so I am trying to do that. However, I cannot get my LaTeX file to build when I have generated the .eps files on my Ubuntu computer. If I save the images on my Mac, the file build just fine. So far, I have tried saving images in ImageJ, FIJI and Inkscape. The same problem occurs in all three. When using kile, I get the following error: /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/oberdiek/epstopdf-base.sty:0: Shell escape feature is not enabled. In TexWorks, the error is different, but still there: Package pdftex.def Error: File `./figures4/figure4a-eps-converted-to.pdf' not found. Now, if I fire up Inkscape, FIJI or ImageJ on OS/X, everything works fine. The Mac also can't build with the Ubuntu-saved images. The images generated on the Ubuntu machine open fine using Document Viewer. I am building the same LaTeX file on both computers, with the exact same results. The header of my LaTeX file is: \documentclass[12pt]{iopart} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{epstopdf} \usepackage{parskip} \usepackage{color} \usepackage{iopams} And then the code for the figure is: \begin{figure} \center{\includegraphics[width=4in] {./figures4/figure4a.eps}} \footnotesize{\caption{ \label{fig:4a} (4a) lorem ipsum dolor sic amet.}} \end{figure} I'd be happy to send an example of both .eps files.   Here is a handy list of translation and localization-related resources for user experience professionals. Following these will help you design an easily translatable user experience. Most of the references here are for web pages or software. Fundamentally, remember your designs will be consumed globally, and never divorce the design process from the development or deployment effort that goes into bringing your designs to life in code. Ask yourself today: Do you know how the text you are using in your designs are delivered to the customer, even in English? Key areas that UX designers always seen to fall foul of, in my space anyway, are: Terminology that is impossible to translate (jargon, multiple modifiers, gerunds) or is used inconsistently Poorly written, verbose text (really, just write well in English, no special considerations) String construction (concatenation of parts assembled dynamically) Composite widget positioning (my favourite) Hard-coded fonts, small font sizes, or character formatting or casing that doesn't work globally Format that is not separate from content Restricted real estate not allowing for text expansion in translation Forcing formatting with breaks, and hard-coding alphabetical sorting Graphics that do not work in Bi-Di languages (because they indicate directionality and can't flip) or contain embedded text. • How to keep word document, html and pdf documentation aligned

  Is there a way to write documentation in a WYSIWYG editor which can then export into HTML, WORD and PDF and keep copies synchronized? This documentation are mostly technical notes and some contextual help for some softwares so they must contain images and some styling, they are not programmer's documentation (API list or functions list) for which probably a program like Javadoc or Doxygen would be the best choice. For example how do companies with hundreds different software lines and thousands of programmers deal with this? I have several solutions but they all seem lacking in some aspect: Latex/Tex : very good pdf and html export, not very user friendly and no full-blown WYSIWYG editor available. LibreOffice/OpenOffice : full blown WYSIWYG editor however html export not so good (need to edit manually exported html which needs to be maintained separately ) Mediawiki or any other wiki : could be keeping documentation in wikitext format, so html is automatically generated, pdf exportation is quite good with many available plugins. Again however need some formation for the staff to use it and need to setup a server for this. Notice I'm not asking for software A vs software B, I'm asking for general advice, big companies procedures for documentation and yes some software product names if available.

• What GUI tools are available for which DVCS?

  When I worked at Sun, we used a DVC system called Forte SCCS/Teamware, which used the old SCCS file format, but was a true distributed source code revision control system. One nice feature is that it had strong GUI support: You could bringover and putback changes by simply clicking and dragging. It would draw trees/graphs showing how workspaces relate to each other. You also could have a graph view to display a single file's complete history, which might have had several branches and merges. Allowing you to compare any two points. It also had a strong visual merge tool, to let you accept changes from one of two conflicting files. Naturally, many of the current DVCSs have command line support for these operations, but I'm looking for GUI support in order to use this in a lower-level undergraduate course I'll be teaching. I'm not saying the Forte Teamware solution was perfect, but it did seem to be ahead of the curve. Unfortunately, it's not a viable option to use for my class. Question: What support do the current DVCSs have with regards to GUIs? Do any of them work on Windows, and not just Linux? Are they "ready for prime-time" or still works in progress? Are these standalone or built as plug-ins, e.g., for Eclipse? Note: To help keep this discussion focused I'm only interested in GUI tools. And not a meta-discussion if GUI tools should be used in teaching.

• Cannot choose windows installation [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Ubuntu 12.4 and XP on Seperate Drives, Dual Boot, How? I've never used Linux before in any form, but was always intrigued, so after a while of deciding whether to risk it I installed Ubuntu 12.04 During the installation I was asked "what would you like to do?" Install Ubuntu as the only operating system, alongside another os, or something else. I chose something else as I wanted to format one of my old 100Gb IDE drives to serve as the partition to install ubuntu on. I formatted this drive with ext4 and made it the root directory for the installation, all ok. I also have on a 1Tb SATA drive two partitions (splitting the disk in 2) one of these contains windows 7 and I did nothing to this drive (and was careful to do so) After the installation finished the computer restarted and gave me no option for choosing operating systems? what have I done wrong how can this be fixed? I would still like to be able to use Win7 for gaming. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. :)

NFakeMail makes it easier for developers to do integration/system testing on software that sends emails by providing a fake SMTP server. You’ll no longer have to manually validate the email sending process. It’s developed in C# and IronPython and targets the .NET 4.0 framework. With NFakeMail you can easily automate the testing of components that rely on sending mails while doing its job.   Inline images is a technique that, instead of referring to an external URL, includes all of the image’s content in the HTML itself, in the form of a Base64-encoded string. It avoids a second browser request, at the cost of making the HTML page slightly heavier and not using cache. Not all browsers support it, but current versions of IE, Firefox and Chrome do. • 2D non-tile based map editor

  I am currently developing a relatively simple 2D, topdown oriented adventure game for the iPhone and was wondering what would be the easiest way to create the maps for my game. I figured I would need some kind of visual editor that would give me immediate feedback and would allow me to place all objects in the world exactly where I want them. I could then load the saved representation of the world I create in the editor in my game. So, I am looking for a simple map editor that allows me to do this. All the objects in my game are simply textured rectangles build up from two triangles. All I need to be able to do is position different rectangles/objects in the map, and give them a texture. I am using texture atlases, so it would be useful to be able to assign portions of textures to the objects. I then need to be able to extract all the objects from the saved representation of my maps, together with the name/identifier of the texture(atlas) they use, and the area of the texture atlas. I have looked at some tile-based map editors like Tiled and Ogmo, but they don't seem to be able to do what I want. Any suggestions? EDIT: a more concrete example: something like the GameMaker level editor, but then with added export functionality in a handy format.

• Unified Auditing - Das neue Auditing in Oracle Database 12c

  In Datenbanken werden fast immer vor allem wichtige Informationen abgelegt. Der Zugriff darauf unterliegt in der Regel gesetzlichen oder betrieblichen Auflagen. Weil der Nachweis, dass diese Auflagen eingehalten werden, ausschliesslich über das Auditing möglich ist, ist eine Datenbank ohne Auditing eigentlich nicht vorstellbar. Ein Artikel der DBA Community hat sich bereits vor einiger Zeit mit den Möglichkeiten und Varianten des Auditierens in der Datenbankversion Oracle Database 11g beschäftigt. Der Artikel beschreibt das Auditing vom Default Auditing, mit dem zum Beispiel das Starten und Stoppen der Datenbank dokumentiert wird, bis hin zum Fine Grained Auditing (FGA), das sehr zielgerichtet DML Operationen erfasst. Er geht auch auf die unterschiedlichen Speichermöglichkeiten für die Audit Daten ein, auf die sogenannten audit trails: Neben der Variante, den audit trail in unterschiedlichen Tabellen der Datenbank (SYS.AUD$, SYS.FGA_LOG$, DVSYS.AUDIT_TRAIL$) abzulegen, wird dabei auf Betriebssystemdateien in einem Oracle proprietären oder im XML Format zurückgegriffen sowie auf die SYSLOGs oder EVENT LOGs der Betriebssysteme. Schaut man sich das alles an, kann man sicherlich feststellen, dass das Auditing über viele Jahre ständig an neue Anforderungen angepasst und erweitert wurde. Aber es ist damit auch nach und nach unübersichtlicher geworden. Das ist vor allem deshalb problematisch, weil das Ziel des Auditing nicht das unbegerenzte Sammeln von Informationen ist, sondern die Auswertung dieser Informationen. Darum wurden in der aktuellsten Datenbankversion, Oracle Database 12c, die unterschiedlichen audit trails zu einem einzigen audit trail zusammengeführt. Das Ergebnis wird als unified auditing bezeichnet. Die dazu nötige vollständige Überarbeitung der Architektur des Auditing Verfahrens bietet gleichzeitig die Gelegenheit, weitere Verbesserungen zu implementieren. Das betrifft sowohl die Performance als auch die Öffnung des gesamten Auditierens zur Nutzung durch diverse weitere Oracle Werkzeuge wie SQL*Loader und RMAN. • apt-get does not work with proxy

  For a command sudo apt-get update I get following error W: Failed to fetch http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick-updates/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages.gz 407 Proxy Authentication Required ( The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy filter is denied. ) I am running Ubuntu 10.10 installed on Windows XP using VirtualBox. For internet connections I am using proxy server with an authentication. I tried to use gnome-network-proxy tool to set proxy settings system-wide. After that /etc/environment has been updated by http_proxy variable with the format http://my_proxy:port/, there were no authentication data. I checked this with firefox. Browser asked my for login and password and everything was working fine. It was unfortunately not the case for apt-get. I have also tried to do as described here. Unfortunately it does not work. May it be somehow related to the fact that a proxy is in a Windows domain, any ideas ? EDIT: My proxy name is http-proxy. Is '-' a special character here ?

The book I want to mention tonight is Microsoft Silverlight 4 Business Application Development: Beginner’s Guide : by Cameron Albert and Frank LaVigne. Cameron and Frank are both great guys and you’ve seen their blog posts come across my SilverlightCream posts many times. I like the writing and format of the book. It leads you quite well from one concept to the next and for a technical book, it holds your interest. You can check out a free chapter here. I have the eBook because for technical material, at least lately, I’ve gravitated toward that. I can have it with me on a USB stick at work, or at home. Read the free chapter then check out their blogs. Even if you think you know a lot of this material, I think you’ll find yourself learning something, and besides, it’s a great one-place reference.
