  • Is there any framework for Windows Forms, DB driven application development/prototyping?

    I'm writing simple database driven application, 80% of functionality is CRUD operations on about 15 tables. Coming from web development background I figured I can cover almost all of these CRUD cases with Rails scaffolding or say Django admins. So I started to look around for Rails/Django-like framework but for Windows Forms applications (ofcourse I understand that "rich client" application development significantly differs from a web development and I'm not expecting anything really similar). I was surprised that except for a variety of ORMs (let's call it Model-layer) it seems like I'm left with little choice when it comes to View-Controller layer. Maybe I'm missing something? PS. I evaluated Visual Studio DataSet Designer, but it seems to work only for the most simple cases, and requires additional code for any slightly nontrivial task.   • How do I integrate WordPress blogs with my Grails application?

    I had my static site with which WordPress blogs were integrated. Now I have made a Grails application with which I want to integrate those WordPress blogs. I had put the WordPress folder copied from my previous site to the web-app folder of my Grails application. But I am not able to access the WordPress folder, as when I hit URL - http://localhost:8080/myApplicaiton/wordpress/, it shows this error: Error 500: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out Also, in my urlMappings.groovy one of the mappings I need is "/$generalPageURL"(controller:'myConroller', action:'myAction') And if I put in the above mapping, all requests for WordPress goes to myAction of myController. Is there any way out to still reach the WordPress folder defined inside web-app folder with the above mapping?

  • Can you create a HIPAA compliant Amazon S3 Web Application?

    I am facing some questions when trying to design an S3 application using ASP.NET MVC and trying to stay HIPAA compliant. My initial plan was to require an SSL connection to my web server, encrypt the images on my server, then send them to s3 using my private keys. Here's my obvious concerns: You cannot store unencrypted images in any temporary file cache when client views images within the browser. Even if I setup an ashx to generically handle the image in memory, couldn't this get stored in cache? Saying the images will be encrpyted because you will be connecting to my server via https still does not guarantee all browsers will not cache data. It's not possible to even consider the "Query String" with expiration option since data will be encrypted before being stored on disk at s3, and will again be decrypted at my server in memory. I think my only option would be to write/purchase some sort of ActiveX component that will not expose the image as a simple html image source or write my app as a client side WinForm application.

    I have 2 applications.First one is a web application through which we provision reference data.Second one is an ESB based application where the reference data is used.The reference data changes but not very frequently.We needed to cache the reference data.The web application( I am not the owner) used hibernate. But my ESB based application did not.We only used EHCache. When reference data is changed by the independent web application that needs to be reflected in ESB application.We implemented using message queue - that is when reference data changes web application sends a message to the message queue.Our ESB application listens to that message & clears the cache & caches the data once again.This works.But it is time intensive.How can I use Hibernate to improve the situation?   • Can you safely rely upon Yahoo Pipes to offload ETL for your application?

    Yahoo Pipes are a very intriguing choice for sort of a poor-man's server-free ETL solution, but would it be a good idea to build an application around one or many Pipes? I've really only used them for toy things here and there, with the only thing I've used longer than a week or two being one amalgamated and filtered RSS feed that I've plugged into Google Reader (which has worked great, but if it goes out for a while I wouldn't notice). So, my question is, would building an application around Yahoo Pipes be reliable (available most of the time)? Ideally it'd be something I could rely on being up 99+% of the time. It looks like the Pipes Terms of Use permit building apps around it, but I am unfamiliar with anyone building anything significant using them.

Here at work my new development machine is Windows 7 64-bit (so I can use extra memory and run VMs). However I have a dilemma: it appears that 16-bit DOS programs do not run under Windows 7 64-bit. I have an old legacy program written in Clipper that I need to run periodically. I cannot access the compatibility setting as Windows 7 just greys them out.

    I'd like my application to query a csv file from a secure website. I have no experience with web programming so I'd appreciate detailed instructions. Currently I have the user login to the site, manually query the csv, and have my application load the file locally. I'd like to automate this by having the user enter his login information, authenticating him on the website, and querying the data. The application is written in C# .NET. The url of the site is: https://www2.emidas.com/default.asp. I've tested the following code already and am able to access the file once the user has already authenticated himself and created a manual query.   • How do I fix this error? Windows server 2003 the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022)

    Opening one of the programs from the user desktop I get the above Aplication error. It is a proram stored on the server and then the icon put on the users desktop (this is how I was told to do it) but it does not run the application. I don't know anything about group policies etc and can just about manage to add users in the active directory and that is it. We just have a folder which we drop the program icons into. Any ideas? I must be doing something wrong as it doesn't always show up on their desktop either. What is the simplest way to do this? Thanks

    I'm working on an asp.net mvc application. Each user have his own time zone. Right now, I'm using "TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones" to generate a drop down list in order for the user to select a timezone and this is what I store in my db They are like that: Morocco Standard Time (00:00:00) UTC (00:00:00) GMT Standard Time (00:00:00) ... I know that php use a different timezone set, they are "region timezone", for example: Europe/Paris Europe/London ... My question is: is there a way to play with the region timezone (like php) in an .NET application? The only way I can think of is to bind each php region timezone to the .net timezone. Also, the "TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones" list all of the timezone on the machine. Is the list different between windows server, windows vista, windows xp? Hope this make sense, thanks guys

  • How do I determine inactivity in a MVVM application?

    I have an MVVM kiosk application that I need to restart when it has been inactive for a set amount of time. I'm using Prism and Unity to facilitate the MVVM pattern. I've got the restarting down and I even know how to handle the timer. What I want to know is how to know when activity, that is any mouse event, has taken occurred. The only way I know how to do that is by subscribing to the preview mouse events of the main window. That breaks MVVM thought, doesn't it? I've thought about exposing my window as an interface that exposes those events to my application, but that would require that the window implement that interface which also seems to break MVVM.

    When managing custom Java applications hosted inside WebSphere Application Server, what JMX metrics do you find most useful for monitoring performance, monitoring availability, and troubleshooting problems? And how do you prefer to slice and visualize those metrics (e.g. chart by top 10 hosts, graph by app, etc.). The more details I can get, the better, as I need to specify a standard set of reports which IT can offer to owners of applications hosted by IT, which those owners can customize but many won't bother. So I'll need to come up with a bunch of generally-applicable reports which most groups can use out-of-the-box. Obviously there's no one perfect answer to this question, so I'll accept the answer with the most comprehensive details and I'll be generous about upvoting any other useful answer. My question is WebSphere-specific, but I realize that most JMX metrics are equally applicable across any container, so feel free to give an answer for JBoss, Tomcat, WebLogic, etc.

    Stack overflow I want to make a universal version of my app available, but I am wondering how is data managed between the iPad and the iPhone versions? -Are they completely independent? or if I have a plist in the iPad app, does it also appear in the iPhone app. If so, is there any syncing etc etc. I have a few months experience with single iPad or iPhone apps, but never a universal.     I am developing a Java Desktop Application. This app needs a configuration to be started. For this, I want to supply a defaultConfig.properties or defaultConfig.xml file with the application so that If user doesn't select any configuration, then the application will start with the help of defaultConfig file. But I am afraid of my application crash if the user accidentally edit the defaultConfig file. So Is there any mechanism through which I can check before the start of the application that whether the config file has changed or not. How other applications (out in the market) deal with this type of situation in which their application depends on a configuration file? If the user edited the config file accidentally or intentionally, then the application won't run in future unless he re-installs the application.

  • How do I set up a test duplicate of a Django and Postgresql based web application?

    Not sure if this is an excessively broad and newbie-ish question for Stack Overflow but here goes: I paid someone else to build a web application for me and now I want to tweak certain aspects of it myself. I learn best by trial and error – changing stuff and seeing what happens. Obviously that's not a great way to treat a live site, so I need to duplicate the site on some kind of test server which I can play with without fear of the consequences. Unfortunately the closest I've come to programming has been creating ActionScript-based websites. I've never touched a database. So I really don't know where to start with setting up a test server. I would really appreciate any advice about where to start. I am completely ignorant and lost here. The web application is built in python/django using a Postgresql database. I use Mac OS X 10.6 if that makes any difference.

  • How does the TuneIn mobile application resume a live stream, when the connection breaks?

    So I have this TuneIn application on my phone, which allows me to listen to many radio stations. It also allows me to rewind and pause the live stream, which I know is doable with today's technology. What gets me puzzled, though, is how when the internet connection breaks, the live stream will stop, but, when the connection comes back, the app can just pick up from where it broke. Why it gets me puzzled is because there is no way for the app to cache the live stream when the net connection has gone, yet it can start the live stream back up, from where it broke. Is there is possible to start a live stream, at a specific point of the audio stream? Or are they using some other method?

    Hello, We have created a beautifully designed .NET WPF desktop application. We are installing the application with InnoSetup , and if .NET 3.5 is not present, it automatically installs it. However, the package to download .NET 3.5 is huge and we found out that about 30% of users do not finish instalation due to this. The obvious solution is to recode everything into .NET 1.1 with Windows Forms but its a major development which would take few weeks. Also, we would then face dilemma if to support both versions (and use innosetup to choose the right one) or just ditch WPF all together. Is there any easy way how to convert WPF to Windows Forms? Or do we have any alternative options to consider? Thank you!

  • Remote XP -> Win98 WMI Connection

    I've asked this on Technet, but because Win98 is no longer supported, I can't get any decent information, I was hoping there might be some "old school" developers here who might be able to help me. There is an application that we use a lot at work. This application should run 8am-5pm with as little interruption as possible. Most of the computers where this application runs are using Win98, and we have no way to upgrade them because we can't buy new hardware at the moment. My computer is running WinXP, so I thought of a way to make sure that this application runs all the time: The idea I had was to develop a Windows Service that executes a VBScript file that contains a WMI query to get a list of processes from each computer. Each list is then examined, and, depending on whether or not the target application is running, it will either do nothing, or it will execute another VBScript file that contains a WMI query that will be used to start the target application remotely. I later found a way to do this all with 1 VBScript file (see code below) My problem is in the remote connection to the target computers. I've installed WMI Core 1.5 on them, but every time I try the remote connection, I get the following: The remote server is unavailable or does not exist: 'GetObject' VBScript runtime error 800A01CE I've done some research, and all I've found is info about DCOM Config and Windows Firewall, but Win98 doesn't have either of these. If I call myfile.open("xpo.dll") I might get an error because I am not passing the [fullpath + name + extension]. The program that is being executed can vary paths depending on the installation path. Therefore, I was wondering if there is a way to get the application path [where the application is located] and set it so that when another program executes from another path everything might work properly...? I deployed this application using aspnet_compiler and a nant build file like <target name="deploy.advance.application"> <exec program="${aspnet.compiler}" commandline='-f -u -c -p ${dir.website.advance.application} -v temp ${dir.publish.advance.application}' /> <mkdir dir="${dir.publish.advance.application}\App_Data" /> </target> Now I started to implment PortableArea, at least LoginArea with all pages embedded, required by the MvcContrib PA. On my local machine works fine, but on testing environment (when I deploy the application with aspnet_compiler) the application could not found Login.aspx view. So the question is how to deploy such applications? There is a directive from aspnet_compiler to tell the compiler that there are some embedded resources? Thanks

  • Icons: How does a developer with no design skill make his/her application icons look pretty?

    I probably spend far too much time trying to make my visual interfaces look good, and while I'm pretty adept at finding the right match between usability and style one area I am hopeless at is making nice looking icons. How do you people overcome this (I'm sure common) problem? I'm thinking of things like images on buttons and perhaps most important of all, the actual application icon. Do you rely on third party designers, in or out of house? Or do you know of some hidden website that offers lots of icons for us to use? I've tried Google but I seem to find either expensive packages that are very specific, millions of Star Trek icons or icons that look abysmal at 16x16 which is my preferred size on in-application buttons. Any help/advice appreciated.
