XML parsing error: 'A string literal was expected' when inserting values into table

In Microsoft Sequel Server 2008 I am attempting to insert values into an sql table with the columns type_id of datatype int and xml_info of datatype XML. I am using the following query: INSERT INTO tbl_applied_devices ([type_id],[xml_info]) VALUES (1,'<Profile ID=99><Server><ID>BC4A18CA-AFB5-4268-BDA9-C990DAFE7783</ID> <Name>localhost</Name><Services></Services></Server></Profile>') But I keep getting this error: Msg 9413, Level 16, State 1, Line 4 XML parsing: line 1, character 13, A string literal was expected What am I doing incorrectly? Thank you for the help. EDIT: I found that the source of the error is the xml element's ID attribute, where seems to be what is causing the error. How can I correctly insert xml with an attribute ? Do I need to somehow escape one of the characters?

Help with Design for Vacation Tracking System (C#/.NET/Access/WebServices/SOA/Excel) [closed]

I have been tasked with developing a system for tracking our company's paid time-off (vacation, sick days, etc.) At the moment we are using an Excel spreadsheet on a shared network drive, and it works pretty well, but we are concerned that we won't be able to "trust" employees forever and sometimes we run into locking issues when two people try to open the spreadsheet at once. So we are trying to build something a little more robust. I would like some input on this design in terms of maintainability, scalability, extensibility, etc. It's a pretty simple workflow we need to represent right now: I started with a basic MS Access schema like this: Employees (EmpID int, EmpName varchar(50), AllowedDays int) Vacations (VacationID int, EmpID int, BeginDate datetime, EndDate datetime) But we don't want to spend a lot of time building a schema and database like this and have to change it later, so I think I am going to go with something that will be easier to expand through configuration. Right now the vacation table has this schema: Vacations (VacationID int, PropName varchar(50), PropValue varchar(50)) And the table will be populated with data like this: VacationID | PropName | PropValue -----------+--------------+------------------ 1 | EmpID | 4 1 | EmpName | James Jones 1 | Reason | Vacation 1 | BeginDate | 2/24/2010 1 | EndDate | 2/30/2010 1 | Destination | Spectate Swamp 2 | ... | ... I think this is a pretty good, extensible design, we can easily add new properties to the vacation like the destination or maybe approval status, etc. I wasn't too sure how to go about managing the database of valid properties, I thought of putting them in a separate PropNames table but it gets complicated to manage all the different data types and people say that you shouldn't put CLR type names into a SQL database, so I decided to use XML instead, here is the schema: <VacationProperties> <PropertyNames>EmpID,EmpName,Reason,BeginDate,EndDate,Destination</PropertyNames> <PropertyTypes>System.Int32,System.String,System.String,System.DateTime,System.DateTime,System.String</PropertyTypes> <PropertiesRequired>true,true,false,true,true,false</PropertiesRequired> </VacationProperties> I might need more fields than that, I'm not completely sure. I've used this code to implement the Web Services: public class VacationConfigurationService : WebService { [WebMethod] public void UpdateConfiguration(string xml) { // Above code goes here } } Which was pretty easy, although I'm still working on a way to validate that XML against some kind of schema as there's no error-checking yet. I also created a few different services for other operations like VacationSubmissionService, VacationReportService, VacationDataService, VacationAuthenticationService, etc. The whole Service Oriented Architecture looks like this: And because the workflow itself might change, I have been working on a way to integrate the WF workflow system with MS Visio, which everybody at the office already knows how to use so they could make changes pretty easily. We have a diagram that looks like the following (it's kind of hard to read but the main items are Activities, Authenticators, Validators, Transformers, Processors, and Data Connections, they're all analogous to the services in the SOA diagram above). The requirements for this system are: (Note - I don't control these, they were given to me by management) Main workflow must interface with Excel spreadsheet, probably through VBA macros (to ease the transition to the new system) Alerts should integrate with MS Outlook, Lotus Notes, and SMS (text messages). We also want to interface it with the company Voice Mail system but that is not a "hard" requirement. Performance requirements: Must handle 250,000 Transactions Per Second Should be able to handle up to 20,000 employees (right now we have 3) 99.99% uptime ("four nines") expected Must be secure against outside hacking, but users cannot be required to enter a username/password. Platforms: Must support Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux, iPhone, Blackberry, DOS 2.0, VAX, IRIX, PDP-11, Apple IIc. Time to complete: 6 to 8 weeks. My questions are: Is this a good design for the system so far? Am I using all of the recommended best practices for these technologies? How do I integrate the Visio diagram above with the Windows Workflow Foundation to call the ConfigurationService and persist workflow changes? Am I missing any important components? Will this be extensible enough to support any scenario via end-user configuration? Will the system scale to the above performance requirements? Will we need any expensive hardware to run it? Are there any "gotchas" I should know about with respect to cross-platform compatibility? For example would it be difficult to convert this to an iPhone app? How long would you expect this to take? printing from crystal reports activex printcontrol gives needless error

I've got an asp.net application running on a windows 2008 64 bit server that gives an error after printing a crystal report. The server has CR 2008 runtime sp2 installed and views fine. When printing from the print button of the CR viewer the print dialog appears and prints correctly but throws the following error message after printing. "An error occurred on the server. Printing will be stopped. Would you like to view the error information" there is a yes or no option that points to an empty html file called PrintControlError.html. Other then this issue I've got no other troubles.

WCF: Using Streaming and Username/Password authentication at the same time

Hi, I have a WCF Service with the following requirements: a) The client requests a file from the server which is transferred as a Stream. Files may be 100MB or larger. I need streaming or chucking or whatever to make sure that IIS is not loading the whole package into memory before starting to send it. b) The client will transfer an ID to identify the file to be downloaded. The user should be authenticated by providing username/password. c) While the username/password part of the communication needs to be encrypted, encryption of the downloaded file is optional for our use case. WCF, Timer Jobs, Web Service which is better ???

I am working with a Web application, based on Asp.Net 3.5 and WSS 3.0 platform. Recenlty i've got a task as follows. Import bank statement using FTX - Desktop application and parse those statements into database in every 24 hours ie. i need to download bank statement with the help of a desktop application(which i can call by batch file). Then i have to go through each statement(text file) and convert those data into our database for future reference. As far as i know, .Net provides the following options to implement such a functionality. SharePoint Timer Jobs Web Services WCF Windows Services I would like to go for SharePoint Timer Jobs, but there are some plans to move whole application to Asp.net platform. I am interested with WCF since i haven't much experience with WCF applications, but not in a position to take final decision :) Which is the most suitable way for this kind of task? Please suggest.

IIS 7 Authentication: Certain users can't authenticate, while almost all others can.

I'm using IIS 7 Digest authentication to control access to a certain directory containing files. Users access the files through a department website from inside our network and outside. I've set NTFS permissions on the directory to allow a certain AD group to view the files. When I click a link to one of those files on the website I get prompted for a username and password. With most users everything works fine, but with a few of them it prompts for a password 3 times and then get: 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. But other users that are in the group can get in without a problem. If I switch it over to Windows Authentication, then the trouble users can log in fine. That directory is also shared, and users that can't log in through the website are able to browse to the share and view files in it, so I know that the permissions are ok. axis2 web service behave differently when tested with web service client or with local test class

Hello I need to update a facade to some web service proxy classes to a third party web service, and expose them as a service. This for two reason : to maintain the same interface for all application that need to use the system : actually its migrating and there are a few differences in the third party ws (method names); and to expose a simplified interface. The third party has provided me with a manual and some pregenerated proxy classes to their service (the java file says generated with axis2 1,4) . I've used netbeans 6.8 and the axis2 plugin to create an axis2 service . This service contains the proxy classes and the facade class which instantiate the web service proxy and calls its method; the facade class is exposed as service. I've used axis2 1.4 (at beginnig and later 1.5 ) and tomcat 6.0. The first test i did was to call the facede methods from inside the project itself and it worked. Then i've created a new project with a jax-ws web service client to call my class deployed on axis2. At this point has happened two strange thing : In the axis2 services page has appeared the third party proxy class as if it were a new service (if i try to get the wsdl axis raises an error ). eg. the proxy interface is named WebServiceAPI (_stub is the concrete class) and , after the first call to my service , i find a new "WebServicesAPI1272968932531_1" service inside axis . The call obvoiusly fail i've began to sniff soap messages with wireshark and i've found they differs when using proxy classes direclty from my facade test class by the messages created after being deployed on axis. i've noticed they differs for the presence of the soap header in the failing message. any help would be greatly appreciated : maybe i messed up something, there might be some incompatibilities or version mistakes? below i've added the signature of the third party proxy, its impementation and the different soap messages: /* * WebServicesAPI.java * This file was auto-generated from WSDL * by the Apache Axis2 version: 1.4 Built on : Apr 26, 2008 (06:24:30 EDT) */ package com.ibm.eci.wsapi; There's something that I don't get it yet in Xtrareport. I have to bind the datasource at runtime and also I have to assign the datasource to the labels programatically. Binding data at runtime is fine ,(and here's my question)I did not get from any examples to how should I bind the datasource to the labels and how to pass the parameter(UserId) from runtime and how to call the report from a webform. For example, I have a table called "User" with 3 fields: UserId, Username and Password. In the report designer I place 3 labels. Then I have a webform where the user is entering the userID and pulling some data and I have a print button on that webform when the user clicks the print button the data should be displayed on the report of UserId..

Using IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) for ASP.NET MVC

I use a simple ASP.NET MVC web (the template you use when you create a new site) and the web works as expected in my live environment. I now try to use IIS Application Request Routing version 2. I have a rule that send all reuqests to a different server that match a rule. The settings are a bit like this: http://blogs.iis.net/wonyoo/archive/2008/07/09/application-request-routing-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy.aspx My rule is just a bit different it is /shop(.*). Only requests that contain shop are send to a different server. I have to use rewrite, not redirect (The same as in the Picture) This works as long as the web the original requests go to is no ASP.NET MVC web. I tried to use a plain htm file in the webfolder and it worked. If put a compiled ASP.NET application into the webfolder it worked. But as soon as I put an ASP.NET MVC web into the folder, request arr served by this application. My understanding is that the ARR should kick in before the web application gets the chance to handle the request. Did anybody use ARR sucessfully as a reverse proxy for a ASP.NET MVC web? EDIT Here is the resulting web config when the rewrite roule is entered. Can't Deploy or Upload Large SSRS 2008 Report from VS or IE

So far in this project I have two reports in VS2008/BIDS. The first one contains 1 tablix and is about 100k. The second one contains 3 tablixes (tablices?) and is about 257k. I can successfully deploy the smaller report from VS and I can upload it from the Report Manager in IE. I can view/run it from Report Manager and I can get to the Report Server (web service) URL from my browser just fine. Everything is done over HTTPS and there is nothing wrong with the certificates. With the larger report, the error I get in VS is "The operation has timed out" after about 100 seconds. The error when I upload from IE is "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send" after about 130 seconds. In the RSReportServer.config file I tried changing Authentication/EnableAuthPersistence from true to false and restarting the service, but still get the error. I have the key "SecureConnectionLevel" set to 2. Changing this to 0 and turning off SSL is not going to be an option. I added a registry key named "MaxRequestBytes" to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters and set it to 5242880 (5MB) and restarted the HTTP and SRS services as suggested in a forum post by Jin Chen of MSFT. I still cannot upload the larger report. This is on MS SQL 2008 and WS 2003. Printing an external file in its own printing routine

I basically have an application that generates reports in a .html file, I use a .html file for the ease of making tables and formatting text. Now I would like to introduce a way of printing the reports from my program. Because I use a .html file, the formatting would not the correct if I was to print it directly from my application (as far as I know). For this reason, I would like to print it just like my web browser would have in order to keep the tabular data intact and the text formatting. Does anyone know a way to do this? Thank you.

My website is running on Asp.net v4 , IIS 7 , Windows server 2008. My cpu is running on 20-30% and the site is responding quickly. Every 2-5 mins i'm receiving the following error: Event code: 3001 Event message: The request has been aborted. We decided to use web services to achieve this and now i just want to know what diffuculties may i face with? I have URL of WSDL of the Web Service, will it be enough for me to adding web reference and giving the WSDL's URL? How will i authenticate? And Will it be the same with consuming normal web services? Also i wonder is there anybody that can share a .NET dll that can be used in visual studio 2008? There are some articles relating how to create such a dll using SAP .Net Connector and visual studio 2003 but i could not find anybody sharing the resulting dll under their post. Thanks...

Size Mismatch Between Swing Fonts and Printable Fonts in Java

Hi All, I've got a panel displaying a JTextPane backed by a StyledDocument. When I print a string of text in, say Arial 16, the text it prints is of a different size than the Arial 16 Word prints. Is there some sort of flaw in the translation of Swing fonts to Windows system fonts or something of the sort that makes it difficult (or impossible) to print accurately? I can achieve an approximation by scaling down the size of my font before printing, but this never quite gets me the results I would like, as it's not possible in all cases to reproduce things like equivalent numbers of words on a line, etc. Has anybody run into this before?

WCF REST Compression

I have a REST service that returns a large chunk of XML, about 150k worth. e.g. http://xmlservice.com/services/RestService.svc/GetLargeXML Therefore I want to compress the response from the server, as GZIP should reduce this to something much smaller. Having searched everywhere I cannot for the life of me find an example of how to perform compression for WCF REST services. Help!! I need to take an array of three lines in a text file and sort them base on the first line in Java. I also need to manipulate this as well and then print to screen. I have a test file that is formatted like this: 10 Michael Jackson 12 Richard Woolsey I need to input this from a text file and then rearrange it based on the number associated with the name. At that point, I need to use a random number generator and assign a variable based on the random number to each name. Then I need to print to screen the variable I added and the name in a different format. Here is an example of the output: 12: Woolsey, Richard Variable assigned 10: Jackson, Michael Other variable assigned I highly appreciate any help. I ask because I do not really know how to input the three lines as one variable and then manipulate later on in the program. Thanks, Cory

Simple python oo issue

Hello, Have a look a this simple example. I don't quite understand why o1 prints "Hello Alex" twice. I would think that because of the default self.a is always reset to the empty list. Could someone explain to me what's the rationale here? 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get' error using SQLAlchemy

I've been trying to map an object to a database using SQLAlchemy but have run into a snag. Version info if handy: [OS: Mac OSX 10.5.8 | Python: 2.6.4 | SQLAlchemy: 0.5.8] The class I'm going to map: class Student(object): def __init__(self, name, id): self.id = id self.name = name self.preferences = collections.defaultdict(set) self.allocated_project = None self.allocated_rank = 0 def __repr__(self): return str(self) def __str__(self): return "%s %s" %(self.id, self.name) Background: Now, I've got a function that reads in the necessary information from a text database into these objects. The function more or less works and I can easily access the information from the objects. Before the SQLAlchemy code runs, the function will read in the necessary info and store it into the Class. There is a dictionary called students which stores this as such: students = {} students[id] = Student(<all the info from the various "reader" functions>) Afterwards, there is an "allocation" algorithm that will allocate projects to student. It does that well enough. The allocated_project remains as None if a student is unsuccessful in getting a project. SQLAlchemy bit: So after all this happens, I'd like to map my object to a database table. Using the documentation, I've used the following code to only map certain bits. I also begin to create a Session. from sqlalchemy import * from sqlalchemy.orm import * engine = create_engine('sqlite:///:memory:', echo=False) metadata = MetaData() students_table = Table('studs', metadata, Column('id', Integer, primary_key=True), Column('name', String) ) metadata.create_all(engine) mapper(Student, students_table) Session = sessionmaker(bind=engine) sesh = Session() Now after that, I was curious to see if I could print out all the students from my students dictionary. for student in students.itervalues(): print student What do I get but an error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "~/FYP_Tests/FYP_Tests.py", line 140, in <module> print student File "/~FYP_Tests/Parties.py", line 30, in __str__ return "%s %s" %(self.id, self.name) File "/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/SQLAlchemy-0.5.8-py2.6.egg/sqlalchemy/orm/attributes.py", line 158, in __get__ return self.impl.get(instance_state(instance), instance_dict(instance)) AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get' I'm at a loss as to how to resolve this issue, if it is an issue. App_offline.htm, CSS, images, and aspnet_isapi.dll

Hey all! So, the site I'm working on is using urlrewriting in coordination with aspnet_isapi.dll (everything is mapped to it). I put up my app_offline.htm file, and all the text shows, however, the CSS or images aren't being served. I'm guessing they're being processed by ASP.NET due to the wildcard mapping instead of IIS. Is this correct? If so, how can I allow IIS to serve these files? Furthermore, an issue I can see arising..in the web.config for the rewriter settings: <rewrite url="^~/images/network/(.*)/(.*).jpg$" to="~/services/ImageHandler.ashx?type=$1&id=$2"/> <rewrite url="^~/image/view/(.*).jpg$" to="~/ServePRView.aspx?id=$1"/> <rewrite url="^~/asset/view/(.*).jpg$" to="~/services/ImageHandler.ashx?id=$1&type=asset"/> Thanks for the help all, -Steve

Single Sign On for a Web App

I have been trying to understand how this problem is solved for over a month now. I really need to come up with a general approach that works -- I'm basically the only resource who can do it. I have a theory, but I'm just not sure it's the easiest (or correct) approach and I haven't been able to find any information to support my ideas. Here's the scenario: 1) You have a complex web application that offers secure content on a subscription basis. 2) Users are required to log in to your application with user name and password. 3) You sell to large corporations, which already have a corporate authentication technology (for example, Active Directory). 4) You would like to integrate with the corporate authentication mechanism to allow their users to log onto your Web App without having to enter their user name and password. Now, any solution you come up with will have to provide a mechanism for: adding new users removing users changing user information allowing users to log in Ideally, all these would happen "automagically" when the corporate customer made the corresponding changes to their own authentication. Now, I have a theory that the way to do this (at least for Active Directory) would be for me to write a client-side app that integrates with the customer's Active Directory to track the targeted changes, and then communicate those changes to my Web App. I think that if this communication were done via Web Services offered by my web app, then it would maintain an unhackable level of security, which would obviously be a requirement for these corporate customers. I've found some information about a Microsoft product called Active Directory Federation Service (ADFS) which may or may not be the right approach for me. It seems to be a bit bulky and have some requirements that might not work for all customers. For other existing ID scenarios (like Athens and Shibboleth), I don't think a client application is necessary. It's probably just a matter of tying into the existing ID services. I would appreciate any advice anyone has on anything I've mentioned here. In particular, if you can tell me if my theory is correct about providing a client-side app that communicates with server-side Web Services, or if I'm totally going in the wrong direction. Also, if you could point me at any web sites or articles that explain how to do this, I'd really appreciate it. My research has not turned up much so far. Finally, if you could let me know of any Web applications that currently offer this service (particularly as tied to a corporate Active Directory), I would be very grateful. I am wondering if other B2B Web app's like salesforce.com, or hoovers.com offer a similar service for their corporate customers. I hate being in the dark and would greatly appreciate any light you can shed ... Jeremy
