Hello Techies, In my windows application in .net, i need to have Print Preview option for an excel file. Design for Vacation Tracking System

I have been tasked with developing a system for tracking our company's paid time-off (vacation, sick days, etc.) At the moment we are using an Excel spreadsheet on a shared network drive, and it works pretty well, but we are concerned that we won't be able to "trust" employees forever and sometimes we run into locking issues when two people try to open the spreadsheet at once. So we are trying to build something a little more robust. I would like some input on this design in terms of maintainability, scalability, extensibility, etc. It's a pretty simple workflow we need to represent right now: I started with a basic MS Access schema like this: Employees (EmpID int, EmpName varchar(50), AllowedDays int) Vacations (VacationID int, EmpID int, BeginDate datetime, EndDate datetime) But we don't want to spend a lot of time building a schema and database like this and have to change it later, so I think I am going to go with something that will be easier to expand through configuration. Right now the vacation table has this schema: Vacations (VacationID int, PropName varchar(50), PropValue varchar(50)) And the table will be populated with data like this: VacationID | PropName | PropValue -----------+--------------+------------------ 1 | EmpID | 4 1 | EmpName | James Jones 1 | Reason | Vacation 1 | BeginDate | 2/24/2010 1 | EndDate | 2/30/2010 1 | Destination | Spectate Swamp 2 | ... | ... I think this is a pretty good, extensible design, we can easily add new properties to the vacation like the destination or maybe approval status, etc. I wasn't too sure how to go about managing the database of valid properties, I thought of putting them in a separate PropNames table but it gets complicated to manage all the different data types and people say that you shouldn't put CLR type names into a SQL database, so I decided to use XML instead, here is the schema: <VacationProperties> <PropertyNames>EmpID,EmpName,Reason,BeginDate,EndDate,Destination</PropertyNames> <PropertyTypes>System.Int32,System.String,System.String,System.DateTime,System.DateTime,System.String</PropertyTypes> <PropertiesRequired>true,true,false,true,true,false</PropertiesRequired> </VacationProperties> I might need more fields than that, I'm not completely sure. I've used this code to implement the Web Services: public class VacationConfigurationService : WebService { [WebMethod] public void UpdateConfiguration(string xml) { // Above code goes here } } Which was pretty easy, although I'm still working on a way to validate that XML against some kind of schema as there's no error-checking yet. I also created a few different services for other operations like VacationSubmissionService, VacationReportService, VacationDataService, VacationAuthenticationService, etc. The whole Service Oriented Architecture looks like this: And because the workflow itself might change, I have been working on a way to integrate the WF workflow system with MS Visio, which everybody at the office already knows how to use so they could make changes pretty easily. We have a diagram that looks like the following (it's kind of hard to read but the main items are Activities, Authenticators, Validators, Transformers, Processors, and Data Connections, they're all analogous to the services in the SOA diagram above). The requirements for this system are: (Note - I don't control these, they were given to me by management) Main workflow must interface with Excel spreadsheet, probably through VBA macros (to ease the transition to the new system) Alerts should integrate with MS Outlook, Lotus Notes, and SMS (text messages). We also want to interface it with the company Voice Mail system but that is not a "hard" requirement. Performance requirements: Must handle 250,000 Transactions Per Second Should be able to handle up to 20,000 employees (right now we have 3) 99.99% uptime ("four nines") expected Must be secure against outside hacking, but users cannot be required to enter a username/password. Platforms: Must support Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux, iPhone, Blackberry, DOS 2.0, VAX, IRIX, PDP-11, Apple IIc. Time to complete: 6 to 8 weeks. My questions are: Is this a good design for the system so far? Am I using all of the recommended best practices for these technologies? How do I integrate the Visio diagram above with the Windows Workflow Foundation to call the ConfigurationService and persist workflow changes? Am I missing any important components? Will this be extensible enough to support any scenario via end-user configuration? Will the system scale to the above performance requirements? Will we need any expensive hardware to run it? Are there any "gotchas" I should know about with respect to cross-platform compatibility? For example would it be difficult to convert this to an iPhone app? How long would you expect this to take? (We've dedicated 1 week for testing so I'm thinking maybe 5 weeks?)

Reuse another ASP.NET session (set Session ID)

My problem is that when I open web application from Outlook in a separate IE window, the ASP.NET session is lost. This is (as described in several places) because in-memory cookie is lost. So it goes like this: User works with ASP.NET web application in Outlook, and this stores some info in ASP.NET session User clicks Print to open new IE window with print-ready data The new window has different ASP.NET session ID and can't access old data. I think, maybe, if I pass ASP.NET session ID to new IE window, I can somehow "attach" to that session? Tell ASP.NET that this is the one that I need to be current?

Perl, LibXML and Schemas

If I change it to not use the default namespace (xmlns:lib="http://libs.domain.com" and prefix all items in the XML file with lib and change the XPath expressions to include the namespace prefix (/lib:library/lib:book) then it again works file. Why? and what am I missing? nServiceBus with large XML messages

Hello, I have read about the true messaging and that instead of sending payload on the bus, it sends an identifier. In our case, we have a lot of legacy apps/services and those were designed to receive the payload of messages (xml) that is close to 4MB (close MSMQ limit). Is there a way for nService bus to handle large payload and persist messages automatically or another work-around, so that the publisher/subscriber services don't have to worry neither about the payload size, nor about how to de/re-hydrate the payload? iphone Dev - activity indicator with NSThread not working on Nav controller table view

I really can't get this to work, basically when my JSON feeds loads I want the indicator to show, then hide when it's stopped. It loads top level menu items 1st "Publishing, Broadcasting, Marketing Services", then when Broadcasting is selected it loads a feed using the JSON framework hosted on Google. Round this load I call startIndicator and stopIndicator using the NSThread. Run a JasperServer reprt via PHP and pass over the querystring.

I'm using Web Services to run some reports created in iReport on JasperServer. Inside the .jrxml file I can see the xml that holds the SQL for the report. Is it possible to pass this querystring over to JasperServer via Web Services, instead of hard coding the definition inside the .jrxml file. This is the string I would build in PHP, then pass over to JasperServer to be used in the execution of the report. <queryString> <![CDATA[SELECT * FROM table WHERE j=2]]> </queryString> Basically, I'm trying to find a way to dynamically create the SQL in PHP, then pass the SQL over to Jasper to run the report...is it even possible? How can I flush the output of disp in Octave?

I have a program in Octave that has a loop - running a function with various parameters, not something that I can turn into matrices. At the beginning of each iteration I print the current parameters using disp. The first times I ran it I had a brazillion warnings, and then I also got these prints. Now that I cleaned them up, I no longer see them. My guess is that they're stuck in a buffer, and I'll see them when the program ends or the buffer fills. Is there any way to force a flush of the print buffer so that I can see my prints?

Best Practise for Writing a POS System

Hi, I'm putting together a basic POS system in C# that needs to print to a receipt printer and open a cash drawer. Do I have to use the Microsoft Point of Service SDK? I've been playing around with printing to my Samsung printer using the Windows driver that came with it, and it seems to work great. I assume though that other printers may not come with Windows drivers and then I would be stuck? Or would I be able to simply use the Generic/Text Driver to print to any printer that supports it? For the cash drawer I would need to send codes directly to the COM port which is fine with me, if it saves me the hassle of helping clients setup OPOS drivers on there systems. Am I going down the wrong path here? Thanks, Gary

All i can find online is how to print using printf: int score=2; printf("You scored %i", score); But this does not work when using the setText method. I have also tried labelAnswer.setText:("You scored %i", score); [labelAnswer setText:("You scored %i", score)]; But these do not work. I get an error: "request for member in something not a structure or union" Can anyone help?

Configuration Error ASP.NET password format specified is invalid

I am getting the above error in IIS 6.0 now when I browse my C# / SQL web application. This was built in VS 2008 and SS 2008 on a 32-bit XP OS. The application was working before I added Login controls to it. However, this is my first time configuring Login/password controls so I am probably missing something really basic. This error doesn't happen until I try to login. Here are the details of my error from IIS; I get the same error in VS: Parser Error Message: Password format specified is invalid. The Network Service account has SELECT, EXECUTE, INSERT, UPDATE access to this database. But one problem I see is that all of the tables in this database are empty except for aspnet_SchemaVersions, which just has 2 records (common and membership). Is this right? I added users and roles via ASP.NET Configuration wizard, and I believe I set this up correctly since I followed the Microsoft tutorial at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998347.aspx. One other problem I see from VS is after adding content to my Page_Load on my initial login Password.aspx.cs file, I'm getting an invalid cast problem below. I googled this problem also but the solutions I saw confused me even more. So I've created a class library to keep all my objects in and I've created the MVC app. My question is what would be the best way to access the data? Taking into account possible expansion in the future. Should I use web services/WCF? RIA Services? Remoting? Or something else. What have people used in the past and what do you recommend? Thanks

Can you access registers from python functions in vim

It seems vims python sripting is designed to edit buffer and files rather than work nicely with vims registers. You can use some of the vim packages commands to get access to the registers but its not pretty. My solution for creating a vim function using python that uses a register is something like this. function printUnnamedRegister() python >> EOF print vim.eval('@@') EOF Setting registers may also be possible using something like function setUnnamedRegsiter() python >> EOF s = "Some \"crazy\" string\nwith interesting characters" vim.command('let @@="%s"' % myescapefn(s) ) EOF However this feels a bit cumbersome and I'm not sure exactly what myescapefn should be. So I've never been able to get the setting version to work properly. Unable to generate temporary class for web service

RESTful API Documentation

I'm going to design a RESTful API soon, thus I need to describe it in order to enable other people to start implementing clients using it. I've looked around a bit, but unfortunately, I've not found any standardized form of describing web-based RESTful services. What I'am looking for is something like JavaDoc, although it don't have to be generated out of any sort of code. I'm also not talking about something like WADL, I rather want to have some human-readable documentation I can hand out. Due to the nature of RESTful web-based services, it should be quite easy to standardize a documentation. It should just list available ressources, corresponding URIs, allowed methods, content-types and describe the availabe actions. Do you have any suggestions therefore? Thanks in advance & Greets

But my consoleapp crashs when i call the cgi script. So i did a little debuging and write a text file after some actions i do in my .net program. The result was that my programm crash everytime i'd like to open a access mdb file. It told me that i need the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). But i cant belive this message because my .net consoleapp runs without errors if i start it from my own. So can anybody give me some advise how i can call my .net consol ab through a webscript. I'm happy for every advise So it don't have to be a solution using a cgi script. Regards, Nico

I've tried using the methods suggested in this question, but they always return the path to the symlink, not the script.
