  • [Vista] Can not access control panel.

    I can not access Contol panel in my windows vista machine. As soon as i click the "conrol panel" item in start items, it shows up a window and then its closed automatically ( same happens if i use "control" command). Is there some program or some registry entry thats restricting it? is ther a way to control this behaviour?

  • connecting clients to server with emulator on different computers

    I am writing an application that communicates using sockets. I have a server running on one android emulator on a computer, then i have 2 other clients running on android emulators on 2 other computers. I am trying to get the 2 clients to connect to the server. This works when i run the server and clients on the same computer, but when i attempt to do this on the same wifi network and on separate computers it gives me the following error. The client and server code is posted below. A lot is stripped out just to show the important stuff. Also, after the server starts i telnet into the server and run these commands redir add tcp:5000:6000 (i have also tried without doing the redir but it still says the same thing). Then i start the clients and get the error. Thanks for the help! Both the 5000 port and 6000 port are open on my router.   • pam_tty_audit and non privileged users

    I'm working on a cents 6.3 box and am trying to log all commands executed from a bash shell and came across pam_tty_audit. I've added the appropriate line to my /etc/pam.d/system-auth file: "session required pam_tty_audit.so enable=*" The problem is that it does not appear to capture commands unless a user is root. For example, if i ssh in as root it logs everything to the audit log, but if I ssh as a regular user it does not start logging anything until after I have su to root. Any ideas?

  • Lots of dropped packages when tcpdumping on busy interface

    My challenge I need to do tcpdumping of a lot of data - actually from 2 interfaces left in promiscuous mode that are able to see a lot of traffic. To sum it up Log all traffic in promiscuous mode from 2 interfaces Those interfaces are not assigned an IP address pcap files must be rotated per ~1G When 10 TB of files are stored, start truncating the oldest What I currently do Right now I use tcpdump like this: tcpdump -n -C 1000 -z /data/compress.sh -i any -w /data/livedump/capture.pcap $FILTER The $FILTER contains src/dst filters so that I can use -i any. The reason for this is, that I have two interfaces and I would like to run the dump in a single thread rather than two. compress.sh takes care of assigning tar to another CPU core, compress the data, give it a reasonable filename and move it to an archive location. I cannot specify two interfaces, thus I have chosen to use filters and dump from any interface. Right now, I do not do any housekeeping, but I plan on monitoring disk and when I have 100G left I will start wiping the oldest files - this should be fine. And now; my problem I see dropped packets. This is from a dump that has been running for a few hours and collected roughly 250 gigs of pcap files: 430083369 packets captured 430115470 packets received by filter 32057 packets dropped by kernel <-- This is my concern How can I avoid so many packets being dropped? These things I did already try or look at Changed the value of /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_max and /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_default which did indeed help - actually it took care of just around half of the dropped packets. I have also looked at gulp - the problem with gulp is, that it does not support multiple interfaces in one process and it gets angry if the interface does not have an IP address. Unfortunately, that is a deal breaker in my case. Next problem is, that when the traffic flows though a pipe, I cannot get the automatic rotation going. Getting one huge 10 TB file is not very efficient and I don't have a machine with 10TB+ RAM that I can run wireshark on, so that's out. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe even a better way of doing my traffic dump altogether.

"A list of servers could not be collected from Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). Ensure that your network is functioning correctly and that this computer can access AD DS." Our network is an Windows Server 2003 network with all of the services running fine. I can't run this from either a machine or a server. Any idea where we should start?

  • Virtual Box for everyday use?

    I was just thinking about how nice virtual machines are...and how even "rebooting" is less painful, because at the very least, you don't have to wait for your physical computer to turn off and on with all the mobo shannanigans at the start... so, what if I ran everything in a virtual machine? Then I wouldn't really need a primary OS, I just need something than can run VirtualBox or what have you. So what's the lightest weight OS I could install, that supports a good virtual machine?

    When I attempt to search for an email, if I search for the email using the search toolbar within Outlook 2007, no results are found. However, if I use the Windows 7 built-in search functionality found when you click the Start button, using the same search criteria as I did in Outlook, Windows 7 finds the email immediately. Question: how can I make Outlook 2007 find the email(s) I'm searching for that Windows 7 finds that Outlook doesn't?

We know the machines/labs have to be undeployed and consolidated, which is done for this testing lab.     Hi, Since switching to Windows 7 for my desktop I've started to get really p***ed off at the length of time it takes to start the event viewer to display the application event log (typically 20-30 secs or disk griding - presumably to load and cache all the events) I've just noticed that on server 2008 R2 it seems instantaneous. Is my experience typical? Is there any setting I can tweak to make it fast on Windows 7 as well? Tim

  • Why does a hard disk suddenly look to Windows as if it "needs to be formatted"?

    This is more of a theory question, but what are the reason(s) for a disk to suddenly cause Windows to start saying it "needs to be formatted"? It happens to an IDE disk that I have in a cheap external enclosure, and I can usually get most of the data back by using software like recuva. It's now happened to an internal disk I have. I'm not looking for software to fix this (although links would be appreciated), but rather a low-level explanation as to what gets corrupted on the disk.

  • Cannot access boot menu with compaq 8510p

    I have a problem with my HP compaq 8510p laptop: when I start it, the fan starts and the power light is on, but the screen displays nothing. When I insert a bootable hard drive, it activates the hard drive light (meaning that the CD is recognized) but it stops after a few seconds. Same thing with any hard drive: the drive is recognized but does not boot. What I've tried so far: Changing the hard drive or booting with no hard drive (same problem) Plugging anoher display via VGA : no display on the other screen Inserting a windows-7 CD (same problem) Booting only on battery, with battery and power cable, only with power cable (same problem) So it looks like something is preventing the laptop from booting and displaying the boot menu. Do you have experienced something similar with a laptop ? What could be wrong ? The laptop is out of warranty. The system used to be windows-7 x64. Edit: I went to the help desk of my university. A guy took a look (he also tried to plug an external screen) and said that the computer is dead: on the HP laptops eventually the GPU card dies and so does the motherboard because they are linked. He saw this many times, and even if I can fix the problem, the laptop would crash again after a while. Do you have similar experience with HP laptops ? (mine is 4 years old) Edit 2: Believe it or not, my laptop is magically working again. I have no clue about what is going on. Now it is like starting and old car: when you turn it on you secretly hope it will actually start... With that said, I expect my laptop to break again in the near future (its an HP after all) and I will accept an answer or add my own accordingly. Edit 3: As expected, the laptop is down again. This time, sometimes when I power it up, it shuts down automatically after 3 seconds, sometimes not at all. In addition, when it does not shut down on its own, the power button does not work : the only way to shut it down is by unplugging the battery. As before, the screen is black, and only the power and battery lights are on. (the other ones: hard drive and wifi are off). I have tried to plug in another power plug, removing the battery and removing the hard drive without success. I might buy another laptop. I've brought the laptop to a repair shop. The problem is indeed that the graphic card is down. It will be replaced by a new one.

  • Error 22 no such partition on adding a SSD

    I'm trying to add a second SSD to a Centos 6 system. But I get the error 22 no such partition at boot. The system already has a single SSD (sdb) and a pair of HDDs (sd{a,c}) in a RAID 1 array from where it boots. It is as if the new SSD assumes one of the devices of the RAID array. Is it?     I have a script running that will start up an interface with a new IP. If the script comes up with an IP that is already in use i am in trouble. Is it possible that the script set up the new Ip, detects that this IP is already in use and then check the next one, until it finds an ip that works ? B=192.168.1.   • Proxied access for chinese users?

    I'm working on a web app that will have a large-ish chunk of users in China. The bad news is that most of them are university students, and access has been blocked. Setting up a proxy server inside China seems like the best (potential?) solution, but it's the first time I'll have done anything along those lines.
