  • TrueCrypt partition will no longer mount

    I am hoping for some advice to help me out of my situation, with luck. I have a computer running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with 3 hard disks installed. On my 2TB hard disk 2 (non-system disk) I have 4 partitions. One is for music, another for video, a downloads partition and a 500GB RAW Truecrypt encrypted partition / volume that I had setup to mount with 4 photographs used as keyfiles. The 4 photographs are located in my 'Documents' partition which is one of four partitions on my 1.5TB hard disk 1 (non-system disk) When I setup the disk encryption I did not (I'm 99% sure) create a password, I only used the 4 photograph keyfiles to mount the volume. Recently my 1TB hard disk 0 (system / boot) started to fail so I decided to replace it. I was going to clone the old disk to a new disk but decided that a fresh installation would be more beneficial. Once I had transferred all the required 'User Data' from my old hard disk 0 (C: disk) I discarded it. I reinstalled Truecrypt, pointed to the partition, selected my 4 keyfiles photographs and I mounted my encrypted volume with no issues. In fact I mounted it several times after re-installing Windows and after reboots. Now all of a sudden when I try and mount it I get the message "incorrect keyfile(s) and/or password or not a Truecrypt volume". Now I am not sure why this happened as I do not recall exactly what I did between last mounting the volume successfully and it not mounting. Here are some of the possible things I may have done to cause it to stop working but I am at a loss as to where to start to try and resolve the problem. 1. I had swapped the drive letters to a preferred order. 2. I possibly swapped the physical SATA connectors on the mainboard. 3. I enabled 'Hot Plugging' for the two non-system hard disk SATA ports and the DVD SATA port in the BIOS. I have tried changing the encrypted partition drive letter as suggested in another post but this does not help. On my old system the encrypted drive was drive "X". I have about tried it with all the other free drive letters but alas nothing changes. I do not recall what drive letter was allocated to the encrypted partition before I changed them all. I have not tried to change the letter back to what it possibly was to start with as I am happy with the current layout. I will try this is anyone thinks it would be worthwhile though. I do hope I have managed to convey my situation in an understandable manner and live in hope someone could help me recover years of personal files.     Most of the hardware failures I've had (especially hard drive crashes) have happened when turning the machine on, so is it better to leave your computer on all the time or not? For years, I've heard arguments for... no power surges on start-up steady operating temperature for components and against... unnecessary wear on hard drives power wastage and I'm still not sure.

    Server A generates a file and scp's it to Server B. I have cron running on Server B that each minute looks for new files that were copied over. My question is- how can Server B ensure that the file that was copied over is actually done being copied? I don'y want to start processing the file unless it's been fully written to. Is this possible to determine?

  • what would you use to run a mail server off ubuntu (8.04 or 10.04)

    I've been tasked with hosting our own inhouse mail server 1) i need to have web mail access , imap 2) it needs to be as cheap as possible i already have an ubuntu server that we use for our samba drives and so far have been very happy with it I am not apposed to building out another box for a dedicated email server but I'm not familiar enough with Linux or mail hosting programs to even know where to start.

  • Can you make desktop shortcuts to Seamless mode Windows apps in VirtualBox on OSX?

    Running the latest version of VirtualBox on OSX and hosting a Windows virtual machine. Is there a way to put shortcuts on your Mac desktop for the Windows apps that you run in seamless mode? I can't find a way to do this, so every time I want to newly launch a Windows app in seamless mode I have to access the full Windows desktop, start the app and hit HostKey+L. Really a pain for apps that you want to run in seamless mode all time.

  • Windows 7 boots with a blank screen with mouse cursor only.

    My Windows 7 machine was powered down without logging out first. Now when booting the PC, Windows 7 does not completely start--instead it boots to an all-black screen with a mouse cursor that can be moved around. There are no icons, toolbars, etc. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not bring up the Task Manager. Booting to Safe Mode renders the same result.

    Is it possible? We have complete control over our DNS server and the server actually being pointed to. We are interested in how many DNS Queries we are currently getting, as we want to move to Ultra DNS, but we need to know how many queries we're likely to get in a month. Is this possible to figure out? Do I need to start a service before tracking begins? Or use shell to access the data?

    Is there a Hyper-V virtual machine client for XP? Linux? Mac? I'm aware that we could VNC or RDP into the virtual machine but the problem is if the VM is not running or is suspend the end user can't start it and IT needs to get involved. I guess what I'm looking for is something like VMconnect.exe that runs on xp or linux. Or, If I am totally barking up the wrong tree let me know. ;-)

It looks like can do more than simply virtualize an entire system, and I'm having trouble finding good documentation that would explain how I can start a virtualized system (using an openvz template or something). Could someone give me some pointers or direct me to some good documentation?

    I have a CentOS 5.5 server running Apache on port 80 as well as some other applications. All works fine until I for some reason need to restart the httpd process. Doing so returns: sudo /etc/init.d/httpd restart Stopping httpd: [ OK ] Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs First I thought perhaps httpd had frozen and was still running, but that was not the case. So I ran netstat to find out what was using port 80: sudo netstat -tlp Active Internet connections (only servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 *:7203 *:* LISTEN 24012/java tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:smux *:* LISTEN 3547/snmpd tcp 0 0 *:mysql *:* LISTEN 21966/mysqld tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN 3562/sshd tcp 0 0 *:http *:* LISTEN 3780/python26 Turns out that my python process had taken over listening to http in the instant that httpd was restarting. So, I killed python and tried starting httpd again - but ran into the same error. Netstat again: sudo netstat -tlp Active Internet connections (only servers) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name tcp 0 0 *:7203 *:* LISTEN 24012/java tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:smux *:* LISTEN 3547/snmpd tcp 0 0 *:mysql *:* LISTEN 21966/mysqld tcp 0 0 *:ssh *:* LISTEN 3562/sshd tcp 0 0 *:http *:* LISTEN 24012/java Now my java process had taken over listening to http. I killed that too and could then successfully restart httpd. But this is a terrible workaround. Why will these python and java processes start listening to port 80 as soon as httpd is restarted? How to solve? Two other comments. 1) Both java and python processes are started by apache from a php script. But when apache is restarted, they should not be affected. And 2) I have the same setup on two other machines running Ubuntu and there's no problem there. Any ideas? Edit: The Java process listens to port 7203 and the python process supposedly doesn't listen to any port. For some reason, they start listening to port 80 when apache is restarted. This hasn't happened before. On Ubuntu it runs fine. For some reason, on my current CentOS 5.5 machine, this problem arises.

I've found this Release Notes page and a (short) summery table at the top of the language tutorial but neither have dates, so I don't know where to start (and the more detailed notes make for rather dry reading). Does anyone know of a page that list thing that have changed since that book was published?

  • Need a script/batch/program that runs a command that won't be killed when the parent is killed

    The scenario I use Zabbix to monitor my servers and recently I wanted to add some more metrics for the Windows ones. For security reasons, I used Zabbix's User Parameter feature, but it limits the execution of external commands to about 3 seconds. After that, the command is forcibly killed. I want to run some long run commands, so I used the trick from Zabbix's forum: run the command in the background, write the results to a file and use Zabbix to collect them. This is rather easy under *nix thanks to the "&" operator, but there is no such support in Windows' shell. To make things worse, when Zabbix kills forcibly kill the cmd.exe it used to evaluate the commands, all child processes die including the unfinished background tasks. Thus I need something that can sever all the ties with its children so they won't be affected in the cascading kill. What I've tried start and start /B - They do nothing as the child always die with the parent WScript.Shell.Run as in invis.vbs from StackOverflow - Sometimes work. If the wscript process is forcibly killed as opposed to quitting on its own, the children will die as well. hstart - similar results to invis.vbs At command - This requires you to set an absolution time for the task to run as opposed to an offset, so the code would be quite messy due to the limited shell scripting capability of Windows. (Edit) PsExec.exe from the SysInternals suite - It uses a service to launch the command, so it is not affected by the kill; however, it prints some banner and log info to StdErr and there's no switch to disable this. When I use 2>NUL to redirect them, Zabbix reports an error. After trying the above in different combinations, I noticed if I call hstart from invis.vbs, the command started by the former will be left alone as a parent-less process when invis.vbs is killed. However, since I need to redirect the output, the command I want to run is always in the form of cmd.exe /c ""command" "args"" >log. The vbs also removes all the quotes, so I have to encode the command with self-defined escape sequences. The end result involves about five levels of escaping/quoting, which is almost impossible to maintain. Anyone know any better solutions? Some requirements Any bat/vbs/js/Win32 binary is acceptable Better not require multiple levels of escaping No .Net (including PowerShell) because it is not installed

  • Wampserver not working in Windows 8

    I recently upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 8 successfully. Other application are working perfectly except wampserver. When I double click on the desk top icon, it shows red on the tray bar and then the color changes but when I click Start All Services, nothing happens. Localhost does not open in webbrowser. Skype is not running on my computer, i don't know if there is other application using the same port in Win8. Please help!

    I have PostgreSQL 8.4 and 9.0 running on the same server (Ubuntu Lucid). I installed them both via apt-get (8.4 with the default package sources, and 9.0 after adding the ppa from https://launchpad.net/~pitti/+archive/postgresql). When I run a command like "createdb" from the command line or start up the "psql" shell, PostgreSQL version 8.4 is used by default on my system. So, how do I force these commands to use PostgreSQL 9.0 instead of 8.4?

    I've installed java 1.6.0_31 32bit on Windows 7 64bit system, but this installation messed up my system, e.g. when I start Google Chrome I get error Your preferences can not be read Visual Studio 2010 after launching shows error that The Application Data folder for Visual Studio could not be created The shortcut to the Downloads folder in Windows Explorer no longer works. Is there a way to install Java without messing up Windows 7? Or maybe this mess can be cleaned up after installation of Java, but how?
