• Metro: Dynamically Switching Templates with a WinJS ListView

  Imagine that you want to display a list of products using the WinJS ListView control. Imagine, furthermore, that you want to use different templates to display different products. In particular, when a product is on sale, you want to display the product using a special “On Sale” template. In this blog entry, I explain how you can switch templates dynamically when displaying items with a ListView control. In other words, you learn how to use more than one template when displaying items with a ListView control. Creating the Data Source Let’s start by creating the data source for the ListView. Nothing special here – our data source is a list of products. Two of the products, Oranges and Apples, are on sale. Declaring the Templates and ListView Control Next, we need to declare the ListView control and the two Template controls which we will use to display template items. The first template is used when rendering a normal product and the second template is used when rendering a product which is on sale. The second template, unlike the first template, includes the text “(On Sale!)”. The ListView control is bound to the data source which we created in the previous section. The ListView itemDataSource property is set to the value ListViewDemos.products.dataSource. Notice that we do not set the ListView itemTemplate property. We set this property in the default.js file. Switching Between Templates All of the magic happens in the default.js file. The default.js file contains the JavaScript code used to switch templates dynamically. Depending on the value of the product onSale property, the DOM element is generated from either the productItemTemplate or the productOnSaleTemplate template. Using Binding Converters instead of Multiple Templates In the previous sections, I explained how you can use different templates to render normal products and on sale products. There is an alternative approach to displaying different markup for normal products and on sale products. Instead of creating two templates, you can create a single template which contains separate DIV elements for a normal product and an on sale product. These data-win-bind attributes are used to show the “normal” template when a product is not on sale and show the “on sale” template when a product is on sale. These attributes set the Cascading Style Sheet display attribute to either “none” or “block”. The data-win-bind attributes take advantage of binding converters. "block" : "none"; }) }); app.start(); })(); The ListViewDemos.displayNormalProduct binding converter converts the value true or false to the value “none” or “block”. The ListViewDemos.displayOnSaleProduct binding converter does the opposite; it converts the value true or false to the value “block” or “none” (Sadly, you cannot simply place a NOT operator before the onSale property in the binding expression – you need to create both converters). The end result is that you can display different markup depending on the value of the product onSale property. Either the contents of the first or second DIV element are displayed: Summary In this blog entry, I’ve explored two approaches to displaying different markup in a ListView depending on the value of a data item property. The bulk of this blog entry was devoted to explaining how you can assign a function to the ListView itemTemplate property which returns different templates. We created both a productItemTemplate and productOnSaleTemplate and displayed both templates with the same ListView control. We also discussed how you can create a single template and display different markup by using binding converters. The binding converters are used to set a DIV element’s display property to either “none” or “block”. We created a binding converter which displays normal products and a binding converter which displays “on sale” products.

• Web API, JavaScript, Chrome &amp; Cross-Origin Resource Sharing

  The team spent much of the week working through this issues related to Chrome running on Windows 8 consuming cross-origin resources using Web API.  We thought it was resolved on day 2 but it resurfaced the next day.  We definitely resolved it today though.  I believe I do not fully understand the situation but I am going to explain what I know in an effort to help you avoid and/or resolve a similar issue. So, for example, if you write a ASP.NET MVC Web API service and try to consume it from multiple apps, the browsers used may (will?) indicate that you are not allowed by showing an “Access-Control-Allow-Origin” error indicating the requester is not allowed to make requests. Internet Explorer (big surprise) is the odd-hair-colored step-child in this mix. It seems that running locally at least IE allows this for development purposes.  Chrome and Firefox do not.  In fact, Chrome is quite restrictive.  Notice the images below. IE shows data (a tabular view with one row for each day of a week) while Chrome does not (trust me, neither does Firefox).  Further, the Chrome developer console shows an XmlHttpRequest (XHR) error. Screen captures from IE (left) and Chrome (right). Note that Chrome does not display data and the console shows an XHR error. Why does this happen? The Web browser submits these requests and processes the responses and each browser is different. Okay, so, IE is probably the only one that’s truly different.  However, Chrome has a specific process of performing a “pre-flight” check to make sure the service can respond to an “Access-Control-Allow-Origin” or Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) request.  So basically, the sequence is, if I understand correctly:  1)Page Loads –> 2)JavaScript Request Processed by Browser –> 3)Browsers Prepares to Submit Request –> 4)[Chrome] Browser Submits Pre-Flight Request –> 5)Server Responds with HTTP 200 –> 6)Browser Submits Request –> 7)Server Responds with Data –> 8)Page Shows Data This situation occurs for both GET and POST methods.  Typically, GET methods are called with query string parameters so there is no data posted.  Instead, the requesting domain needs to be permitted to request data but generally nothing more is required.  POSTs on the other hand send form data.  Therefore, more configuration is required (you’ll see the configuration below).  AJAX requests are not friendly with this (POSTs) either because they don’t post in a form. How to fix it. The team went through many iterations of self-hair removal and we think we finally have a working solution.  The trial-and-error approach eventually worked and we referenced many sources for the information.  I indicate those references above.  There are basically three (3) tasks needed to make this work. Assumptions: You are using Visual Studio, Web API, JavaScript, and have Cross-Origin Resource Sharing, and several browsers. 1. Change Web API Controllers to Allow CORS There are actually two steps here.  Do you remember above when we mentioned the “pre-flight” check?  Chrome actually asks the server if it is allowed to ask it for cross-origin resource sharing access.  So you need to let the server know it’s okay.  This is a two-part activity.  a) Add the appropriate response header Access-Control-Allow-Origin, and b) permit the API functions to respond to various methods including GET, POST, and OPTIONS.  OPTIONS is the method that Chrome and other browsers use to ask the server if it can ask about permissions.  Here is an example of a Web API controller thus decorated: NOTE: You’ll see a lot of references to using “*” in the header value.  For security reasons, Chrome does NOT recognize this is valid. Headers and Methods and Such We had most of this code in place but found that Chrome and Firefox still did not render the data.  Interestingly enough, Fiddler showed that the GET calls succeeded and the JSON data is returned properly.  We learned that among the headers set at the class level, we needed to add “ACCEPT”.  Note that I accidentally added it to methods and to headers.  Adding it to methods worked but I don’t know why.  We added it to headers also for good measure. • Metro: Dynamically Switching Templates with a WinJS ListView

  Imagine that you want to display a list of products using the WinJS ListView control. Imagine, furthermore, that you want to use different templates to display different products. In particular, when a product is on sale, you want to display the product using a special “On Sale” template. In this blog entry, I explain how you can switch templates dynamically when displaying items with a ListView control. In other words, you learn how to use more than one template when displaying items with a ListView control. Creating the Data Source Let’s start by creating the data source for the ListView. Nothing special here – our data source is a list of products. Two of the products, Oranges and Apples, are on sale. Declaring the Templates and ListView Control Next, we need to declare the ListView control and the two Template controls which we will use to display template items. The first template is used when rendering a normal product and the second template is used when rendering a product which is on sale. The second template, unlike the first template, includes the text “(On Sale!)”. The ListView control is bound to the data source which we created in the previous section. The ListView itemDataSource property is set to the value ListViewDemos.products.dataSource. Notice that we do not set the ListView itemTemplate property. We set this property in the default.js file. Switching Between Templates All of the magic happens in the default.js file. The default.js file contains the JavaScript code used to switch templates dynamically. Depending on the value of the product onSale property, the DOM element is generated from either the productItemTemplate or the productOnSaleTemplate template. Using Binding Converters instead of Multiple Templates In the previous sections, I explained how you can use different templates to render normal products and on sale products. There is an alternative approach to displaying different markup for normal products and on sale products. Instead of creating two templates, you can create a single template which contains separate DIV elements for a normal product and an on sale product. These data-win-bind attributes are used to show the “normal” template when a product is not on sale and show the “on sale” template when a product is on sale. These attributes set the Cascading Style Sheet display attribute to either “none” or “block”. The data-win-bind attributes take advantage of binding converters. The ListViewDemos.displayOnSaleProduct binding converter does the opposite; it converts the value true or false to the value “block” or “none” (Sadly, you cannot simply place a NOT operator before the onSale property in the binding expression – you need to create both converters). The end result is that you can display different markup depending on the value of the product onSale property. Either the contents of the first or second DIV element are displayed: Summary In this blog entry, I’ve explored two approaches to displaying different markup in a ListView depending on the value of a data item property. The bulk of this blog entry was devoted to explaining how you can assign a function to the ListView itemTemplate property which returns different templates. We created both a productItemTemplate and productOnSaleTemplate and displayed both templates with the same ListView control. We also discussed how you can create a single template and display different markup by using binding converters. The binding converters are used to set a DIV element’s display property to either “none” or “block”. We created a binding converter which displays normal products and a binding converter which displays “on sale” products.

  I'm looking for a way to show/hide an arbitrary RichFaces component. In this case, I have a <rich:dataTable> that contains several rows. Each row needs to have it's own, independent Show/Hide link, such that when you click "Show details", two things happen: The "Show details" link is re-rendered as "Hide details" The associated detailsColumn is displayed. Furthermore, detailsColumns should be hidden by default (effectively rendered="true" to the client but hidden with style="display: none;"). I don't want to write my own JavaScript functions if it's not absolutely necessary. I also don't want to have a server-side bean keep track of which detailColumns are being displayed, and subsequently re-render everything over AJAX: this should be purely client-side behavior. I'm not sure how to accomplish that.   hi guys, i'm new to the asp.net mvc. and i have a link which will popup show a 3 panes listbox which allows the user to select country, region and language. and when the user click on the language, this will redirect back to the controller and refresh the page and show the proper localized content. i was thinking of using a jquery dialog/modal to do this but so i try using fancybox for this which will load the hidden div of the three listbox up. unfortunately, on clicking on the first listbox, the page will call a jquery event which will show the populate the 2nd list box in which the lightbox will close. is there a better way to do this? or i'm not using the proper jquery plugin? i was thinking of putting the whole three panes inside a html file and do ajax call to get the content into that page and load the listbox like that and just use the html popup like a normal popup. Any suggestions? i'm stuck, help!!

  I am testing a Ajax action using Rspec and Selenium. This test should pass right ? I also kept an alert and tried @browser.is_alert_present.should be_true but i got the same error. I tried @browser.is_text_present("test") and this test succeeded. In the test database a record was created for Alok Swain but when I tried the above assertion it passed when i expected it to fail. Is there any thing else to be done here. What am I missing ?

• How can I regain control over a "stuck" scroll bar?

  I normally have a lot of tabs open in the browser at one time, which normally doesn't cause any problems. Occasionally, though, the page will have fully rendered, the scroll bar is at the top of its track on the right, but placing the the mouse pointer on the scroll bar does not allow me to get control of it (and using the arrow at the bottom of the scroll bar doesn't work either). This seems to happen to me in both Firefox and Chrome, both latest versions. There is normally no load on the CPU, and while my memory usage can be high (especially with Chrome), I still usually have 25% left. I fear that this is one of those "for your own good" features, to prevent scrolling down a page that may still have elements loading and/or a stuck script, but I'm wondering whether or not there is a setting in Firefox or Chrome (or perhaps Windows in general) that will allow the scroll bar to be "released" even though the browser may be busy? It may be "2002" of me, but I wouldn't mind being able to scroll along gradually, even if the page hasn't had time to fully render all of the images, etc., yet. Does such an advanced setting exist "under the hood"?

  I'm trying to build a web site that let's you view and manipulate data from any page in any other website. To do that, I have to bypass 'Allow Origin' problems: i'm loading the other domain's content in an iframe and i have to manipulate its content with javascript downloaded from my domain. My first attempt was to write a simple proxy myself, requesting the other domains page through a server proxy coded in Java that not only serves the content but rebuilds links (src's and href's) in the content so that the content referenced by these links alse get downloaded through my handmade proxy. The result is not bad but has problems with url's in css and scripts. It's then that i realized that mod_proxy_html is supposed to do exactly all this job. The problem is that i cannot figure out how to make it work as expected. Let's suppose my server runs in my-domain.com and to proxy and transform content from another domain i'd make a request like this: my-domain.com/proxy?url=http://another-domain.com/some/content I'd want mod_proxy_html to serve the content and rewrite following URLs in http://another-domain.com/some/content in the following ways: Absolute URLs not from another-domain.com: no rewritting Relative from root urls:/other/content - /proxy?url=http://another-domain.com/other/content Relative urls: other/content - /proxy?url=http://another-domain.com/some/content/other/content Relative to parent urls: ../other/content - /proxy?url=http://another-domain.com/some/other/content The url should be specified at runtime, not configuration time. Can this be achieved with mod_proxy_html? Could anyone provide a simple working configuration to start with? • How can I optimize my ajax calls to deliver at 60ms.

  I am building an autocomplete functionality for my site and the Google instant results are my benchmark. When I look at Google, the 50-60 ms response time baffle me. They look insane. In comparison here’s how mine looks like. To give you an idea my results are cached on the load balancer and served from a machine that has httpd slowstart and initcwnd fixed. My site is also behind cloudflare From a server side perspective I don’t think I can do anything more. Can someone help me take this 500 ms response time to 60ms? What more should I be doing to achieve Google level performance? Edit: People, you seemed to be angry that I did a comparison to Google and the question is very generic. Sorry about that. To rephrase: How can I bring down response time from 500 ms to 60 ms provided my server response time is just a fraction of ms. Assume the results are served from Nginx - Varnish with a cache hit. Here are some answers I would like to answer myself assume the response sizes remained more or less the same. Ensure results are http compressed Ensure SPDY if you are on https Ensure you have initcwnd set to 10 and disable slow start on linux machines. Etc. I don’t think I’ll end up with 60 ms at Google level but your collective expertise can help easily shave off a 100 ms and that’s a big win.

• WPF Layout algorithm woes - control will resize, but not below some arbitrary value.

  I'm working on an application for a client, and one of the requirements is the ability to make appointments, and display the current week's appointments in a visual format, much like in Google Calender's or Microsoft Office. I found a great (3 part) article on codeproject, in which he builds a "RangePanel", and composes one for each "period" (for example, the work day.) You can find part 1 here: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WPF/OutlookWpfCalendarPart1.aspx The code presents, but seems to choose an arbitrary height value overall (440.04), and won't resize below that without clipping. What I mean to say, is that the window/container will resize, but it just cuts off the bottom of the control, instead of recalculating the height of the range panels, and the controls in the range panels representing the appointment. It will resize and recalculate for greater values, but not less. Code-wise, what's happening is that when you resize below that value, first the "MeasureOverride" is called with the correct "new height". However, by the time the "ArrangeOverride" method is called, it's passing the same 440.04 value as the height to arrange to. I need to find a solution/workaround, but any information that you can provide that might direct me for things to look into would also be greatly appreciated ( I understand how frustrating it is to debug code when you don't have the codebase in front of you. :) ) The code for the various Arrange and Measure functions are provided below. The "CalendarView" control has a "CalendarViewContentPresenter", which handles several periods. Then, the periods have a "CalendarPeriodContentPresenter", which handles each "block" of appointments. Finally, the "RangePanel" has it's own implementation. • CommandBinding broken in inner Custom Control when nesting two Custom Controls of the same type.

  I've done a Custom Control in form of a GroupBox but with an extra header which purpose is to hold a button or a stackpanel with buttons at the other side. I've added the a Dependency Property to hold the extra header and I've connected the customized template. Everything works fine until I put one of these controls in another one. Now the wierd stuff begins(at least in my eyes xP), the command binding in the inner control simply isn't set. I tried to use Snoop to gather some data, the see if the inherits is broken and when I clicked on the buttons which isn't doing what I want it to, boom, breakpoint triggered. So in some wierd way the Command isn't set until something that I don't know what it is, happens, which snoops triggers. I've also tried to put the buttons in the regular Header property and that works fine, but not with my own made. I could just switch places with them to make it like I want but now I'm curious to know where the problem lies... Now I wonder, what can I've missed? Now when I try to view this control in the Form Designer it gives me these errors: The variable 'listBox1' is either undeclared or was never assigned. The variable 'textBox1' is either undeclared or was never assigned. This is obviously wrong as they are defined in MyControlBase with public access. Is there any way to massage Form Designer into allowing me to visually edit my control?

• ASP.NET Connections Fall 2011 Slides and Code

  Thanks everyone who came to my talks at ASP.NET Connections in Las Vegas!  There was a definite theme to my talks this year…taking advantage of JavaScript to build a rich presentation layer. I gave the following three talks: JsRender Templates – Originally, I was scheduled to give a talk on jQuery Templates.  However, jQuery Templates has been deprecated and JsRender is the new technology which replaces jQuery Templates. In the talk, I give plenty of code samples of using JsRender.  You can download the slides and code samples RIGHT HERE   HTML5 – In this talk, I focused on the features of HTML5 which are the most interesting to developers building database-driven Web applications. In particular, I discussed Web Sockets,  Web workers, Web Storage, Indexed DB, and the Offline Application Cache. All of these features are supported by Safari, Chrome, and Firefox today and they will be supported by Internet Explorer 10. In this talk, I discuss all of the bug fixes and new features which the developers on the Superexpert team have added to the Ajax Control Toolkit over the previous six months. We also had a good discussion of the features which people want in future releases of the Ajax Control Toolkit.
