  In another example of clinging to the core business much too long, DISH announced its closing the remaining 300 Blockbuster stores.  This reminds us that we must always be looking over our shoulders for the next big thing.  Blockbuster had the opportunity to buy Netflix, but it passed just as Barnes & Noble decided it didn't need to partner with Amazon.  Its so tempting to stick with a profitable business instead of taking a risk on a new idea.  Nevertheless, Blockbuster is history -- and this video from The Onion seals it. • Boot splash broken by "SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xyyyyyyy already in use"

  I have ubuntu 11.04 with all the latest updates. I have an ATI HD 4350 graphics card and the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" activated. The reported behaviour does not affect the functionality, its just an optical thing. When I booted up using the desktop CD, the ubuntu boot splash was shown correctly in high resolution. • How to do a login page for third party service without letting them sign on?

  We have a unique situation (at least for me, first time seeing this). We have a web form where accountants can fill in requests and that part is taken care of. But after their login we redirect them to a third-party website where we need more information from them. The process is crazy right now since we have to give our account login info to all people filing with us. So is there a way in PHP or any other solution where we can after that form on our website auto login with our information to that third party website in a way that our credentials are not visible to the users using the service?

  So I posted this on another forum yesterday but that forum got suspended for malware so gotta wait for the webmaster to fix the site. Here's the basics: We've released a press release through PRMac that included a video review. Submitted and followed up on all the big iOS review sites. None of them replied back with interest. A lot of them just told me that their editors are volunteers who will review games that are "interesting to their readers" and that they would put my app "into consideration" The only site that reviewed our app and promoted virally was iPhoneAppReview.com which we paid. We promoted on the top iOS forums We are now doing in-app advertising through inMobi and are integrating the SDK code into our app to start doing Tapjoy We posted up our gameplay videos on YouTube Any marketing strategies that anyone can suggest or recommend that we haven't used yet? If anyone wants to try out our game and give feedback on the game or the site or anything, that would be great! Our target countries are Japan, China, and the US.

  Everything I've read about Hadoop seems like exactly the technology we need to make our enterprise more scalable. We have terabytes of raw data that is in non-relational form (text files of some kind). We're quickly approaching the upper limits of what our centralized file server can handle and everyone is aware of this. Most people on the tech team, especially the more junior members of the tech team are all in favor of moving from the central file system to HDFS. The problem is, there is one key (most senior, etc.) member of the team who is resisting this change and every time Hadoop comes up, he tells us that we could simply add another file server and be in the clear. So, my question (and yes, it's really subjective, but I need more help with this than any of my other questions) is what steps can we take to get upper management to move forward with Hadoop despite the hesitation of one member of the team?

  Hi everyone, What's common sense when it comes to minimising the risk of employees spreading critical information to rivalling companies? As of today, it's clear that not even the US government and military can be sure that their data stays safely within their doors. Thereby I understand that my question probably instead should be written as "What is common sense to make it harder for employees to spread business critical information?" If anyone would want to spread information, they will find a way. That's the way life work and always has. If we make the scenario a bit more realistic by narrowing our workforce by assuming we only have regular John Does onboard and not Linux-loving sysadmins , what should be good precautions to at least make it harder for the employees to send business-critical information to the competition? As far as I can tell, there's a few obvious solutions that clearly has both pros and cons: Block services such as Dropbox and similar, preventing anyone to send gigabytes of data through the wire. Ensure that only files below a set size can be sent as email (?) Setup VLANs between departments to make it harder for kleptomaniacs and curious people to snoop around. Plug all removable media units - CD/DVD, Floppy drives and USB Make sure that no configurations to hardware can be made (?) Monitor network traffic for non-linear events (how?) What is realistic to do in a real world? How does big companies handle this? Sure, we can take the former employer to court and sue, but by then the damage has already been caused... Thanks a lot

• Is it better to concentrate on one or two research projects throughout undergrad?

  Currently in the 4th semester of engineering in an Indian university. The thing is - is it better to do as many short-lived projects/research work on diverse topics of computer science or stick to one/two projects consistently throughout my undergraduate years? Case in point: currently working on an image-processing project that promises to carry on for a year or so (as per the prof). Does this seem like being over-specialized at too early a level? Although taking on too many things will spread me out thin and in all probability not end up getting any meaningful work done. Especially as I hope to apply for grad school in the US. Would really appreciate any views and suggestions on this.

  We were looking for some topics related to audio analysis and found acoustic fingerprinting. As it is, it seems like the most famous application for it is for identification of music. Enter our manager, who requested us to research and possible find an algorithm or existing code that we can use for this very simple approach (like it's easy, source codes don't show up like mushrooms): Always-on app for listening Compare the audio patterns to a single audio file (assume sound is a simple beep) If beep is detected, send notification to server With a flow this simple, do you think acoustic fingerprinting is a broad approach to use? Should we stop and take another approach? Where to best start? We haven't started anything yet (on the development side) on this regard, so I want to get other opinion if this is pursuit is worth it or moot.

• SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.4 is out! Now with SQL Server 2011 (Denali) CTP1 support.

  To end the year on a good note this release adds support for SQL Server 2011 (Denali) CTP1 and fixes a few bugs. Because of the new SSMS shell in SQL 2011 CTP1 the SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.4 doesn't have regions and debug sections functionality for now. The fixed bugs are: A bug that prevented to create insert statements for a database A bug that didn't script commas as decimal points correctly for non US settings. A bug with searching through grid results. A threading bug that sometimes happened when saving Window Content History. A bug with Window Connection Coloring throwing an error on startup if a server colors was undefined. A bug with changing shortcuts in SSMS for various features. However for security and performance sensitive applications it is helpful to have at least a basic understanding of how it works in Servlets. • Is there a White / Blank Canvas E-Commerce Platform to Integrate into Existing Site? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Ecommerce Script Should I Use? Our website is built we're interested in adding a Store to the site. Essentially, there is a global header, and a global footer, and in between is a white expandable div. We'd like our store to fit between the header and footer (and preferably be 960px wide). Do you know of any store platform built to live between the header/footer for situations like this? We really want a full store, not just paypal buy buttons. We'd like it to have a shop backend (CMS-like) with full tracking, etc. Can be paid or unpaid, and preferably hosted by us, but either might be applicable (if iframe or alternative works securely?). This would need to feature over 100 items. If authorize.net is supported that is a plus.
