  • The winning combination: Oracle VM Server for x86 + Oracle Sun Fire HW

    You might be wondering why OVM Server for x86 (OVM/x86 here and below) should be seriously considered as a nice (business point of view) alternative to standard Hypervisors, if you are virtualizing Oracle Software, especially if you are planning to move to Oracle x86 Hardware (rackmount or blades). Well, let see some "not well known" facts that might interest you and help you in saving more money for your entire company (and not only the Virtulization team). Fact 1: OVM/x86 is considered as a hard partitionning technology (check page 2 of Oracle Server Partitionning Licencing Policies), so if you are buying new servers based on the latest INTEL Xeon E7 CPUs (10 cores per Socket) and have some licencing issues in deploying further Oracle SW, because you are using a hypervisor not recognized as a hard partitionning technology (like VMware), then you need to check here how to do it with OVM . This might help you to continue to deploy your Oracle DB instances on new x86 HW (12 cores, 40 cores, 64 cores servers) in a reasonable way, without having to pay licences for 12 CPU, 40 CPUs or 64 CPUs. You might also consider migrating your legacy Oracle DB DBs to a virtualized environment like OVM/x86 an recover some CPU licences, that can be reused somewhere else in production. Fact 2: OVM/x86 is free to use, without any extra licence for any specific feature (LiveMigration, High Availability, Embedded Management Console). If you want to use it on non Oracle HW, there is a support fee per  system and per year, that is much below VMware support (Oracle VM Premier Limited Support for systems up to 2 CPUs, and Oracle VM Premier Support for any bigger system, independently on the number of populated sockets). Fact 3: support is included with your Oracle x86 HW support (OPS for systems)  and you can re-install on you system Oracle Linux, Oracle Solaris or Oracle VM server for x86, without beeing charged, an keeping the same support level. Fact 4: it is less expensive to virtualize Oracle Linux or Oracle Solaris on OVM/x86 with Oracle HW that any other similar solution with VMware, because all the VMs are then supported and licenced when you buy Oracle HW with OPS. Fact 5: Oracle VM Templates bring you many Virtual Machines already installed, patched and optimized for various Oracle applications. And to be more specific, those templates are fully supported by Oracle, which is not really true when it comes to another hypervisor. By optimized VM Kernel, I mean PV drivers, OVM-ready kernels in the VM, single source clock for all the VMS, better memory management of the VM ... Fact 6: there is no extra costs for a management console.   • Which hosted ecommerce solutions allow customization?

    Following my previous question, I'm now evaluating the possibility of using a hosted platform for the ecommerce project I have to implement. Before I start "playing" with each one of them, I'd like ask if anybody knows which ones allow a good degree of customization. At the moment I'm looking at BigCommerce, but it seems that customization is limited to templates, while I need additional features which require PHP Coding. Also, I'd need to be able to import additional product data into the system, and I'd need to do this via code; I had a look at some integrations, but they gave me the impression that they all run on the rendered page via JavaScript. For example, if I want to show Facebook Reviews on a product, I'll have to add some JS that will fetch it and show it on the page. This is not optimal, as I must cater for people with JS disabled, therefore I'd need to run my own PHP code. Thanks again for all the opinions.

The audio segment was produced almost 20 years ago by Adams to both promote his own work in digital format and the work of early ebook publisher Voyager Expanded Books. You may notice Adams refers to their product as a PowerBook, a name they kept until they heard Apple would be releasing a laptop with the same name (from then on the product was simply referred to as Expanded Books).   • How do I install an older 2.6.37 Kernel Version?

    I have a Sony VAIO P netbook and for several issues (graphics driver, audio driver and power management), I want to install an older version of the Linux kernel on Ubuntu 11.10 (actually its Xubuntu) that seems to be much more suitable. So I searched for Ubuntu kernels and found this link which includes all versions of the Linux kernel distributed by Ubuntu. I am looking for a version before 2.6.38 (to escape the known power management issue) and of course solve my many driver problems! I guess my best bet is 2.6.37 but there are several 2.6.37.x-x kernels! Can someone point me to the right choice? In each folder (for example: this one) there are several DEB packages. Which packages should I install? (Note: I have a 32-bit system) What is the installation process? sudo dpkg -i *.deb ? Is this fine or additional steps are required? Thanks.

  • Taking the fear out of a Cloud initiative through the use of security tools

    Typical employees, constituents, and business owners  interact with online services at a level where their knowledge of back-end systems is low, and most of the times, there is no interest in knowing the systems' architecture.  Most application administrators, while partially responsible for these systems' upkeep, have very low interactions with them, at least at an operational, platform level.  Of greatest interest to these groups is the consistent, reliable, and manageable operation of the interfaces with which they communicate.  Introducing the "Cloud" topic in any evolving architecture automatically raises the concerns for data and identity security simply because of the perception that when owning the silicon, enterprises are not able to manage its content.  But is this really true?   In the majority of traditional architectures, data and applications that access it are physically distant from the organization that owns it.  It may reside in a shared data center, or a geographically convenient location that spans large organizations' connectivity capabilities.  In the end, very often, the model of a "traditional" architecture is fairly close to the "new" Cloud architecture.  Most notable difference is that by nature, a Cloud setup uses security as a core function, and not as a necessary add-on. Therefore, following best practices, one can say that data can be safer in the Cloud than in traditional, stove-piped environments where data access is segmented and difficult to audit. The caveat is, of course, what "best practices" consist of, and here is where Oracle's security tools are perfectly suited for the task.  Since Oracle's model is to support very large organizations, it is fundamentally concerned about distributed applications, databases etc and their security, and the related Identity Management Products, or DB Security options reflect that concept.  In the end, consumers of applications and their data are to be served more safely in a controlled Cloud environment, while realizing the many cost savings associated with it. Having very fast resources to serve them (such as the Exa* platform) makes the concept even more attractive.  Finally, if a Cloud strategy does not seem feasible, consider the pros and cons of a traditional vs. a Cloud architecture.  Using the exact same criteria and business goals/traditions, and with Oracle's technology, you might be hard pressed to justify maintaining the technical status quo on security alone.     This weekend I have downloaded the latest beta version of NuoDB. I found it much improved and better UI. I was very much impressed as the installation was very smooth and I was up and running in less than 5 minutes with the product. The tools which are related to the Administration of the NuoDB seems to get makeover during this beta release. As per the claim they support now Solaris platform and have improved the native MacOS installation. I neither have Mac nor Solaris – I wish I would have experimented with the same. I will appreciate if anyone out there can confirm how the installations goes on these platforms. Here are few of the questions which I am going to try to find answers with regards to NuoDB. Just so it is clear – NuoDB is not NOSQL, matter of the fact, it is following all the ACID properties of the database. If ACID properties are crucial why many NoSQL products are not adhering to it? (There are few out there do follow ACID but not all). I do understand the scalability of the database however does elasticity is crucial for the database and if yes how? (Elasticity is where the workload on the database is heavily fluctuating and the need of more than a single database server is coming up). How NuoDB has built scalable, elastic and 100% ACID compliance database which supports multiple platforms? How is NOSQL compared to NuoDB’s new architecture? In the next coming weeks, I am going to explore above concepts and dive deeper into the understanding of the same. Meanwhile I have read following white paper written by Experts at University of California at Santa Barbara. Very interesting read and great starter on the subject Database Scalability, Elasticity, and Autonomy in the Cloud.
